Driven by the automotive industry and by the production of electrical and IT equipment, the industrial packaging sector however achieved some positive results in the last quarter. The industrial packaging sector covers extremely varied packaging such as drums, containers, big bags, cardboard boxes, pallet boxes, films, woven polypropylene bags, paper bags, fixing devices, pallets… Whether single-use or reusable, industrial packaging is meant to support industrial processes when considering packaging for materials, intermediate products or components intended for all types of industry. Industrial packaging is designed to withstand all the logistic constraints of road, rail and air transport and of deep-sea shipping, under extremely variable weather conditions. Hardly visible for consumers, it complies with drastic regulations, especially for the transport of hazardous materials. International trade would not be possible without industrial packaging, and it also serves local consumer industry markets such as building, electronic products or automotive parts. ANSWERS PROVIDED BY PACKAGING MANUFACTURERS The building industry generates 31 million tonnes of site waste each year in France, 35,000 tonnes of which are bags and covers. No wonder that Barbier proposes BioSac – a biodegradable and compostable bag (standard EN 13 432) which has been awarded the OK Compost label for cement. The bag is made of a Biolice® film, derived from cornstarch, which is substituted for PE between two kraft paper layers. Empty bags could be collected by partner distributors when delivering materials to building sites, or an incentive policy could be implemented to encourage users to bring them back to the points of sale. 22-25 Nov. 2010 • www.emballageweb.com INDUSTRIAL GOODS MARKET Key figures 2009 (source INSEE) • Total market growth: - 11.9 % in value for all the industrial production

EXAMPLES Knauf Industries has launched It-box, a 100% recyclable isothermal packaging solution which meets the standard cycles of the AFNOR standard NF S 99 700 for health products. Thanks to its double-wall construction, products are not in direct contact with the cold packs, which avoids freezing problems. Cold packs are only placed on the sides and can be fitted into place last after the products have been introduced, which facilitates the packaging process. Made of a single moulded part, this packaging solution eliminates all thermal bridges and ensures full product insulation between +2°C and +8°C during 48 hou rs. The secondary packaging cardboard box serves as a communications medium. The catering industry had solutions for storing, transporting and washing glasses, but no solutions like « Glas Manager » which facilitates handling and safe transport of glasses as well as their protection against dust. GEORG UTZ / UTZ now proposes a glass separation system which can be adjusted to the glass heights with an easy-to-use mechanism. This stackable solution can be fitted easily and safely into RAKO boxes size 600x400.

IPS proposes a universal plastic pallet designed to withstand dynamic loads up to 1,500 kg. It can carry 750 kg in racks, and weighs only 12-14 kg thanks to its flow-through design deck. It can be cleaned efficiently and dried quickly, either manually or in automatic washing machines. ProSelex ® by Cermex : batch-preparation solution for case packing Cermex provides a fresh solution to product selection and batch preparation, which are crucial phases for ensuring high efficiency in case packing. Efficient with all conveyable products, whatever their rigidity and thickness, ProSelex® can be integrated into gantry or robot packers as well as multi-function case packers. Compact, simple and respectful of products, this patented solution has found its place in most markets: food, alcoholic beverages, home and personal care. ProSelex® has proved its efficiency for all types of secondary packaging (RSC, wrap around blanks or trays) for both side and top loading applications. An ingenious device, simple in principle, ProSelex® is nevertheless a high-speed system with a capacity of 250 products per minute.
