The Indiana State Fair has returned to IndyIt’saHoosiertradition:salivatingoverthesweetsmellofroastedcornonthecobwaftingthroughthewarmsummerair;hearinghigh-pitchedscreamsmixedwithlaughteralloverthemassivemidway;andwatchingachild’seyesopenwideashegetshisfirstclose-uplookatamajesticClydesdaleoraplayfulpiglet.ThisistheIndianaStateFair.

HoosierswillcelebratetheiragriculturalheritageAug.2–18and“FunatEveryTurn”isnotjustthisyear’stheme,butalsoapromise.Big-nameentertainerslikeStyx,JoeNichols,KevinCostnerandtheModernWestBandandmanymorewillperformfreeconcertswhileattractionslikeGetAnimated,theSinbadHighDiveShowandRosstynIceShowsgivefamiliesplentytoseeanddoalloverthe250-acrefairgrounds.

Ingredients• 11/4cupsdriedbeans,preferablyheirloom,OR215-ouncecanswhitebeans,rinsed(reducesthesodium)

• 1teaspoonsalt,divided• 1/2cupmincedredonion• 1/4cupcidervinegar• 4teaspoonshoney• 1teaspoonpeanutorcanolaoil• 1/2teaspoonfreshlygroundpepper,ortotaste

• 8ouncesgreenbeans,trimmedandcutinto2-inchpieces

• 1pintcherryorgrapetomatoes,halvedorquartered

Preparation1. Ifusingcannedbeans,skipto

Step3.Ifusingdriedbeans,rinseandpickoverforanystones,thenplaceinalargebowl,coverwith3inchesofcoldwaterandsoakatroomtemperatureforatleast6hoursorovernight.

2. Drainthesoakedbeans,rinseandtransfertoalargesaucepan.Add6cupscoldwater.Bringto

asimmer,partiallycover,andsimmergently,stirringonceortwice,untiltenderbutnotmushy,20minutesto1hour,dependingonthefreshnessofthedriedbeans.(Ifyou’reusingheirloombeans,besuretocheckthemafter20minutes;theytendtocookmorequicklythanconventionalbeans.)Ifatanytimetheliquidleveldropsbelowthebeans,add1cupwater.Whenthebeansareaboutthree-fourthsdone,seasonwith1/2teaspoonsalt.Whenthebeansaretender,removefromtheheatanddrain.

South Split Project to increase bridge clearances

TheIndianaDepartmentofTransportation(INDOT)awardedMilestoneContractorsacontracttocloseInterstates65and70for59daystoreconstructandlowerpavementundersevenbridgesneartheSouthSplit.

INDOTusedaninnovativebiddingtechniquethatrequiredfourIndianacontractorscompeteoverconstructioncostandclosuredays.PrivatesectorcompetitionandinnovationsexpeditedconstructionoftheAllisonvilleRoadBridgeoverI-465andothermajorprojectsaroundthestate.

Milestone’sbidreducestheinterstateclosureto59daysandconstructioncoststo$12.4million.Contractincentivesandliquidateddamagesof$60,000perdaywillencouragecrewstomeetorbeattheirclosureestimate.INDOTwillkeepthemotoringpublicinformedascontractorsestablishaconstructionschedule,includingtheexactdateofclosure.

INDOTisusingdynamicmessagesignsoninterstateroutesleadingintothecitytoreinforcepermitrequirementsanddirectvehicleswithheightsover13’5”touseI-465.Themessageswillbedisplayedinadvanceofthedowntowninterstateclosureasameanstofamiliarizemotoriststotheofficialdetourandpreventadditionalbridgestrikesfromoversizeloads.

Withthenewschoolyearquicklyapproaching,StatehealthofficialswantIndianaparentstobeawareofnewimmunizationrequirementsforschoolentry.Parentscangetimmunizationrecordsfromtheirhealthcareproviderorusethesecurewebsite,www.MyVaxIndiana.in.gov,toprinttheirchild’sofficialimmunizationrecordfromhomebyusingpersonalidentificationnumber(PIN).

Forthe2013-2014schoolyear,allstudentsingradeskindergartenthrough12thgradearerequiredtohavearecorddocumentingtwovaliddosesofvaricella(chickenpox)vaccineordocumentedhistoryofchickenpoxdisease.Studentsfromkindergartenthroughfifthgradeneedtohavetheirhistoryofchickenpoxdiseasedocumentedbyahealthcareprovider.

“Weexperiencedmultipleoutbreaksofchickenpoxaroundthatstateduringthelastschoolyear,”saidIndianaStateDepartmentofHealthChiefMedicalOfficerJoanDuwve,M.D.“Thisnewrequirementwillhelpstopthespreadofthispreventablediseaseandkeepkidshealthyandinschool.”

Hoosiersareencouragedtochecktheirchildren’svaccinationrecordsonlinethatprovidesHoosiersdirectaccesstotheirimmunizationrecordsthroughtheuseofaPIN.ManyHoosiershavealreadyutilizedthisresource.SinceMyVaxIndianawaslaunchedinJuly2012,nearly30,000PINshavebeenassignedand4,619uniquerecordshavebeenaccessedfromthesite.PINscanbeobtainedfromhealthcareprovidersandusedtologintothesecurewebsite.Userscanthendownload,printorfaxofficialrecords.EachrecordalsodisplaystheCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention’srecommendedimmunizationschedule.
