How important is infrastructure?

Moves a destination to another level by increasing capacity (port limits or lack of attractions can limit the potential)

Adds to the brand/product elements to be promoted. Important marketing tool.

Creates leverage for achieving greater operational efficiencies, better flows, separation of conflicts etc. But.. the kind of infrastructure needed

to spoil (not just satisfy) visitors involves constantly looking at every structure, business and person.

While useful, the two models have not adequately addressed the carrying capacity imperative – how much growth or development is acceptable before negatively impacting on the environment.

Reference the Belize 2000, 2003 and later Cruise Policies: • 8000 cruise passengers per day limit • Specific sites to be identified for cruise and long

stay visitors • No more than twenty (20) divers or snorkeler's

will be allowed to be present at the same time in an area of one hundred (100) square yards.

Cruise development studies should include local specialists and service providers – not only consultants. Public participation in decision making should be embraced

So...How important is infrastructure?

Our cruise tourism infrastructure is the brick and mortar, the workers in the sector, the suppliers and facilitators, the agents and port personnel, our tourism agencies etc. This “superstructure” is important.
