The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Henrietta Lacks was a poor, black, tobacco farmer. Doctors took her cells without asking, and those cells never died. Now, decades later, they have been "bought, sold, packaged, and shipped by the trillions to laboratories around the world." This moving nonfiction book is a human story of modern medicine, bioethics, and race relations. Skloot's careful narrative is both poignant and inspiring.

The purpose of Metro Reads, a PTO initiative, is to encourage everyone in the Metro community--administration, teachers, staff, parents, and students--to read the same book over the summer. Let's all

learn something together about our world. Many copies of the book, in all formats, are available in local libraries. Remember, Libraries Without Borders allows you to check out books from any public library

in the St. Louis metropolitan area regardless of where you live.
