The Hurricane Tracker—December 2011/January 2012 2
Happy Holidays!!!!
December is always a busy month at FJH. The Holiday season creates a festive atmosphere at school and our students and staff enjoy the extra energy it brings. There are challenges, though…during December, our students will be devoting much time to finishing projects and assignments before the holiday break. Parents, it is very important to keep up with your child’s grades at this time of the year. It is especially difficult for students to maintain their academic focus now and we need your help to encourage students to work hard and study for their exams. Please remember that the nine weeks exams occur the week before the Christmas break. This is a critical time for many students and it will take all of us to help them achieve their best.
Come out and see our Band and Chorus Holiday concerts. The information can be found on the Calendar section of the FJH Website. The 7th and 8th grade Winter Dance will be held in our Gym on Friday December 9th. Tickets will be sold at lunch on Wednesday – Friday of that week.
In January, basketball and soccer continue as we begin the third nine weeks. Again, with state test-ing coming up in April, it is critical to keep up with your child’s progress and stay in tune with what’s going on at school.
Have a great Holiday break and as always…thanks so much for all you do to make FJH a great school!!!

PTA Co-Presidents’ Message
We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for
including a great school, administration, staff, and awesome parents! Thanks to our entire
school community for working together to make this year the best it can be for our students.
The month of November was filled with fun events and December will be just as busy!
The Food Drive was a success with 1,462 total items collected by our students! It is a great
feeling to watch our school come together to help meet the needs of our community. Thanks
to all of the volunteers who helped with Inflatable Day! This day is a fun way to reward our
students for their involvement with the candy sale fundraiser and it was enjoyed by all who
attended.
Congratulations to Mrs. Sharon McNamara-Horne! We chose her as our PTA Educator of Dis-
tinction. We are very fortunate to her at FJH!
Our Winter Dance for 7th and 8th grade will be on Friday, December 9. Thanks to all of the
volunteers who are working hard to plan a fun night for our students. Our Book Fair will be
December 5-9. Contact us if you would like to help with Book Fair. PTA will treat our teach-
ers to a Holiday Breakfast on Thursday, December 15. Thanks to our Teacher Appreciation
committee for working hard to show our teachers how much we appreciate them!
It is really hard to believe we are almost finished with our first semester! We hope all of you
enjoy the Holidays and we look forward to an even better second semester!

RHT News
November passed in a blur due to a whirlwind of events in such a short period of time that we had at FJH!
Our Veterans Day Assembly was very memorable and extremely moving, and we were so appreciative of everyone who attended. It’s always a special day for us at FJH. We hope to see everyone again next year! Channel 13 has been airing the pro-gram; I highly recommend it for viewing purposes. Thanks to the chorus and 8th grade band members (in particular, Brian Maas-sen for playing Taps) for a wonderful performance, to the officers from the National Junior Honor Society and Builders Club who also participated and did a fabulous job, and to Caleb Lagarrigue, Carson Theriot, and Cameron Guzzardo for reciting their original poems! Thanks to Mr. Danby and his art students for their beautiful flag and to Mrs. Brannon and her Home Ec. students for the delicious treats served at the reception.
We were finally able to hold our inflatable event for all those students who sold one case of chocolate in our September fundraiser. Once again, the students enjoyed themselves tremendously. Our top sellers will enjoy two hours of fun time in the Games2Us Van on December 12th. A big thank you to everyone who participated as this money is necessary to purchase technolo-gy equipment for our school. A hearty thanks to all those wonderful parents who donated their help with the inflatables.
Our basketball schedule is posted on the website and soccer teams are currently forming. Please check the website calen-dar for playing dates and come out and support our CANES!!!
We will have a special assembly on Friday, Dec. 2nd on Rachel’s Challenge, which will also incorporate a parent meeting for that night from 6:30-7:30. More information will be forthcoming, but please make plans to attend this powerful workshop. You can visit their website at www.rachelschallenge.org for more information.
The most important events coming up in December are our chorus (Dec. 7th) and band (Dec. 8th) concerts, which will be held in the gym at 7:00 pm. Both of these groups always put on an excellent show, so make sure to attend. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
On December 9th, 7th & 8th graders will be able to attend a Christmas Dance in the gym. Tickets will be sold during lunch-es on that Wednesday-Friday. No tickets will be sold at the door. Cost is $5.00. Students who are on the blue list for six weeks prior to the dance will not be allowed to attend. Dress is “dressy casual,” which means no shorts or jeans, something fairly nice – something you may possibly wear to a wedding (nice slacks, shirts tucked in, nice dress or skirt and top with appropriate shoes). Clothing needs to follow the St. Tammany Parish Dress Code:
“Girls are required to wear clothing that is suitable for school and that complies with the following regulations. No see-through, sheer shirts, or lace-like clothing are permitted, and no skin may show between the lower garment and shirt in any posi-tion.
Any article of clothing with suggestive symbols, words, or advertisements of products or substances prohibited by the St. Tam-many Parish School Board is prohibited.
Tank shirts and undershirts may not be worn as outer garments. Lower garments worn by students must be secured at waist level, with no undergarments revealed.
Flip-flops or backless thong sandals are not permitted.
The minimum length of dresses, culottes, skirts, and shorts must be at the fingertip or below when standing erect with arms ex-tended down the sides or not more than 5" above the knee.”
Also, smoothies will be pre-sold for $2.00 and pizza and soft drinks will be sold that night for $1.00 each.
Our library will be holding a book fair the week of December 5th-9th.
Please check the website for the exam schedule.

BOOK FAIR
The library will have a Book Fair the week of Dec. 5-9. All 7th & 8th grade classes will visit the fair with their ELA teacher. The fair will also be open to students during both lunch periods. There is no sales tax because the school is Tax Exempt and teachers and par-ents can pay with credit card, check, or cash. Students can pay with cash or a check made out to FJH. This is a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping and help
out the library. Profits from the Book Fair will purchase Reading Counts books.
Mrs. Adair Watkins’s Art II classes at Fontainebleau Jr. High are pictured with the skeletons they made for the Boo
Fest house at Lakeview Hospital. Pictured with the students is Mr. Joe Zimmerman from Audubon Physical Therapy, community partner house sponsor. The theme was ―Make No Bones About It, This Joint is Jumpin’.‖ Students from
the FJH Canes Crew and Mrs. Amy Bennett’s class also helped with the house decorations. Pictured are front row: Viktoria, Savannah, Morgan, Jessica, Mia, and Tanner Middle row: Madeline, Thomas, Cameron, and
Mr. Zimmerman. Back row: Michael, Alina, Emily, and Josh. In addition to helping make the skeletons, Emily,
Savannah, and Jessica volunteered at the Boo Fest handing out candy all day.

FJH FALL FOOD DRIVE UPDATE
FJH Fall Food Drive was a huge success! Thanks to all of our wonderful students and parents for their great gen-erosity. The Samaritan Center was very pleased to receive our donations that will certainly help the families in need throughout our community.
FJH was able to donate 1462 items of non-perishable food. This was a remarkable amount considering it was col-lecting in just 4 days. The students were really excited about the competition to collect the most items. A special thank you goes to our winning classes who brought in the largest amount of food items. Ms. Perrett’s 7th grade homeroom class was a winner, and we had a tie between Ms. Rabalais’ homeroom class, and Mrs. Puntila’s home-room class. These three winning classes will be given a pizza party to be celebrated before the Christmas break, and the winning homeroom teachers will each receive a $25 gift certificate to N’Tini’s provided by the FJH PTA.
Your great generosity is truly appreciated by all!
