The eyes are organs of seeing. It is specially made to see the beauty of our surroundings. The sense of sight helps us recognize each other and learn about color, motion and distance. Objectives:After this part, the pupils will be able to:•Describe human eyes•appreciate the importance of the eye•draw and label the different parts of the eye

Page 32: The Human Senses For Grade III
Page 33: The Human Senses For Grade III

You have two eyes. Each of your eyes has the same parts

Page 34: The Human Senses For Grade III

Eyes are the windows into mind through body. They have their role to play as the connection between the two.

1. Iris is the colored part of the eye: brown, green, blue, etc. It is a ring of muscle fibers located behind the cornea and in front of the lens. It contracts and expands opening and closing the pupil, in response to the brightness of surrounding light. Just as the aperture in a camera protects the film from over exposure, the iris of the eye helps protect the sensitive retina.

Page 35: The Human Senses For Grade III

2. Eyelids protect and lubricate our eyes. Small oil-producing glands line the inner edge of our eyelids. These oils mix with tears when we blink, keeping the eye moist and clean.

3. Pupil is the hole in the center of the iris that light passes through. The iris muscles control its size.

4. Sclera is the white, tough wall of the eye. It along with internal fluid pressure keeps the eye shape and protects its delicate internal parts.

Page 36: The Human Senses For Grade III

7. Cornea is a clear layer at the front-center of the eye that focuses light before lens does so.8.The optic nerve carries electrical signals from your retina to your brain so you can see

Page 51: The Human Senses For Grade III

When you look at a tree, the light that shine on your eyes. As light rays enter both of your eyes, the cornea and the lens bend them. The light rays cross and focus on the retina. The image is formed; the optic nerves send the message to your brain. In the brain the image is no longer upside down. The brain tells you that what you see is tree.

Page 62: The Human Senses For Grade III

Your eyes are the windows to your brain - Protect Them! Here are some safety tips for caring for your eyes

DO’S

Use good lighting to avoid tiring your eyes when reading, writing or cruising the Internet

Tell your parents, school nurse or teachers if your eyes are bothering you.

Wear proper eye protection when you are doing hazardous hobbies, chores or mixing chemicals.

Page 63: The Human Senses For Grade III

Wear proper eye protection when you are playing sports such as racquetball and baseball.

5-14 yr. olds is baseball

15-24 yr. olds is basketball

25-64 yr. olds is racquet sports, such as racquetball and tennis.

According to the National Society to Prevent Blindness, the leading cause of sports-related eye injuries in:

Page 64: The Human Senses For Grade III

Wear sunglasses that block both ultraviolet-A and ultraviolet-B radiation from the sun.

Learn basic first aid for your eyes in case an injury does occur.

Wear a helmet when biking, skateboarding or roller skating and wear your seatbelt in the car.

Page 65: The Human Senses For Grade III

It is also a good idea to get your eyes examined regularly. Your body has some "built-in" devices to protect your eyes such as:

•Bony sockets: your eyes are located in bony sockets to protect them from getting hit. •Eyebrows: your eyebrows are used to keep the light out. •Eyelids: your eyelids can close to keep small objects out of your eyes. •Eyelashes: eyelashes also keep small objects out of your eyes. •Tears: tears keep your eyes moist and work to wash small objects out of your eyes.

Page 66: The Human Senses For Grade III

DON’TS

Walk; don't run, with sharp objects such as scissors, pens, pencils and rulers.

Avoid guns, bow-and arrows, sling shots and firecrackers.

Never look directly at the sun.

Point chemical sprays away from your face BEFORE spraying.

Ears are shaped like seashells shaped. This is the best in picking up sound.

Page 85: The Human Senses For Grade III
Page 86: The Human Senses For Grade III

Sounds travel like waves. When sound waves enter the outer ear they passed through the canal and strike the eardrum. When the eardrum moves or vibrates, it moves the tiny bones nearest to it. This bone, in turn moves the second bone which in turn, moves the third bone. When this membrane vibrates, the fluid in cochlea moves. The nerve cells then send the message to the brain which tells you what you hear.

Page 87: The Human Senses For Grade III

We hear soft and loud sounds. Too loud noise can hurt and damage our eardrum. Loud sounds can cause noise pollution. These objects and animals make loud sounds.

The soft, movable organ in the mouth is called tongue. The tongue is use for tasting. We cannot eat and taste food without our tongue. We will discover a lot of things about our little tongue and on the end of each lesson you’ll shall answer some interesting questions and do some fun activities.

Page 141: The Human Senses For Grade III

In this chapter the students will be able to:

• Learn the importance of the tongue.

• Know the parts and functions of the tongue.

• Draw/identify the different parts of the tongue.

Page 142: The Human Senses For Grade III
Page 143: The Human Senses For Grade III

Which part of the body/your body helps you describe the taste of an object?

We taste with our tongue. The nose helps in telling the taste of an object. That is why we cannot eat well when we have cold.

Page 144: The Human Senses For Grade III

Foods, beverages and other objects have different tastes. We cannot taste only four different flavors – salty, bitter, sweet and sour. We may taste combinations of all these.

The taste buds are on the surface of your tongue. It helps you tell the taste of drinks, food, and other objects.

Page 145: The Human Senses For Grade III

On the diagram it shows the parts of the tongue that indicates sweet, salty, sour and bitter, it also shows the “taste buds” that helps you to taste food, beverage, and other things.
