    THE HUMAN AURA

    LECTURE I.

    FUNDAMENTAL STATEMENTS.

The two distinct subjects upon which thisessay treats are so closely allied in nature andso frequently presented together in modernwritings that it seems desirable to considerthem as practicallyinseparable. Since the pub-icatio

of Man Visible and Invisible'' by thatpopular Theosophical author and lecturer, C. W.Leadbeater, public interest, as well as curiosity, has been greatly aroused to know how far thestartlingdeclarations made in that volume andelsewhere may be fairlyconsidered as correct;and though the subject matter of such a bookdoes not readily admit of close examination, there are many points which can be quite sim-ly

discussed regarding the two chief themeson which it discourses ^the htunan aura, andthe meaning and use of color.

From the standpoint of clairvoyance alone

the general public can hardly stand preparedto judge the merits of any statements, becausefew people, comparatively speaking, have suffi-ient

experimental acquaintance with interioror greatly extended vision to enable them totestifyto the accuracy or inaccuracy of anydeclarations based on psychic perception alone ;but, as in the case of the color side of the ques-ion,

every one is at full libertyto test the ef-ectsproduced by various colors upon human

beings, animals and vegetables, and also to ob-ervethe influence of color in modifyingatmospheric temperature, what might otherwise

appear to be a very abstruse and entirelyoccultsubject soon becomes a matter for world-wideinvestigationand demonstration.

The Human Aura, though visible only by theaid of clairvoyance, is palpably discerned orfelt by millions of people who know nothing ofpsychic science or of the development of un-sual

perceptions. And though this aura, which surrounds every living organism, isvaguely described as magnetism by a greatmany people who have given some attention toit, that word, having a distinct technical mean-ng

in other departments of scientific research, does not very properly describe exactlywhat wemean by auric effluence or radiation. Personal

Magnetism is a convenient and comprehensivephrase which sums up in two words what couldonly be correctlydescribed by using severalsentences, as that title is very frequentlygivento the total sum of all that influences us whenwe are brought into contact with some impres-ive

man or woman. The famous Dr. Gregory,of Edinburgh, did not hesitate to name his bookAnimal Magnetism or Mesmerism and ItsPhenomena, though that volume (the latestedition of which was published in London inLondon in 1877) gives a review of numerouscases of mental and physical healing throughprocesses now usually termed Suggestive, andalso cites many valuable instances of unmistak-ble

clairvoyance. Marie Corelli,in 1886, whenthe first edition of her still famous novel, ARomance of Two Worlds, was brought topublic attention, substituted the more dignifiedtitle human electricity o designate the mar-ellous

spirituaLojipsychic outfloAv of potentialenergy from such transcendent characters asHeliobas and his sister Zara. Bulwer Lytton, long before, had familiarized readers with theword Vril, which was certainlyderived fromVir, the superior man, distinguishedin Latinspeech from Homo, an ordinary man. Virtue, virilitynd all similar well known words, be-

the student of Psychic Science to be told by theEvangeliststhat virtue went forth from a Mas-

; ter and healed sufferers who were receptiveto:its sway. Virtus means properly a great dealmore than the modern world generallyunder-tands

by virtue, a term which has often beennarrowed down almost exclusivelyto its nega-ive

side. ''Positive force, abounding energygoing forth to bless and heal others as well askeeping its generator in perfect health andvigor, was the originalmeaning of that greatstrong word which ought to be restored inpopular parlance to its pristinefulness of sig-ifica

as: 1st ^that generated by the ordinaryman or woman which extends but a very little'way beyond the exterior personality 2nd ^thatpertainingto people whose moral and intellec-ual

from the physique than in ordinary circum-tances;3rd that which is generated by

Adepts or Arhats who can project their emana-ionsto any part of this planet at their discre-ion.Such statements agree very fullywith all

that we can gather from ancient and moderntreatises concerning the illimitable possibilitiesof that subtle and highly potent energy whichis clearlyan influential, but often an unrecog-ized,

factor in the joint accomplishments ofsuccessful telepathyand absent mental healing. To that simply devout type of mind which re-osesperfect trust in Deity, and is willingtoabstain from all inquiry into the method ofdivine operations, dissertations concerning thehow of spiritualhealing may appear super-luous,

and may sometimes be unwelcome ; butthe rationalistic intellect is determined to probethe mystery scientificallyf possible, and suchenquiry into how the blessingsare received, forwhich we are devoutly thankful, in no waytends to diminish our appreciationof the bless-ngs

themselves ; on the contrary, the scientificstudent is often for more intelligentlyratefulthan any individual can be who blindly andtacitlyaccepts a benefaction in complete ignor-nce

of the working of universal order. The most clearlyrational and trulyscientific

view of matter is that it is only a manifestedmode of universal substance. Ancient alchemyand modem chemistry have recently drawnnearer and nearer together, so much so thatmany of the most renowned among contem-orary

physicistsare announcing themselvesconverts to the ancient theory of PRIMUMMOBILE or ETHERIA; wfietherthey usethe old Latin words or not to convey theirmeaning is a question of very small import-nce.

There seems to be no stabilityn thechemical atom when we learn that it is dissolu-le

into a multitude of electrons, but regardlessof what may be dissolved and caused to dis-ppear,

the universal simple element, primalIand ultimate, out of which all differentiatedcompounds spring, and into which they mustall eventuallyreturn, remains as ever the un-lterable

source of energy or substance whichis neither created when worlds are broughtforth nor annihilated when planets are disin-egrated.

The simple force or energy of life, the purespiritof humanity, is Vril, and this it is whichbuilds and heals and can exhibit power to com-and

all combinations of varying elements toappear and disappear.

Natural Magic is a topic which will yet be

comprehended by the more thoughtful in theWest, as it has long been understood by ex-erts

in the East. The Oriental wonder-work-r,whose feats bewilder an English spectator,

is simply a man who has gained greater controlthan ordinary over Prana, or the vital energywhich he has learned to conserve and directvolitionally,ut which the ordinary man allowsto become dissipatedthrough lack of self-con-rol

or dominion over feelingsand appetites. To develop and utilize a good and powerfulaura, certain regular exercises are necessary, and at the head of these stand those primarydirections concerning ryhthmic or harmonicbreathing, which are now beginning to attractsomething like general attention in Americaand in Europe. The mysteriousYogis of Indiaare a very much higher class of people than thefantastic fakirs who meet the eye of generaltravellers ; for while the latter are publicper-ormers,

ready to exhibit their abilities at anytime for a monetary consideration, the trulyadvanced magicians are secluded entirelyfromthat vulgar publicitywhich never affords op-ortunit

for the accomplishment of genuinegood to humanity. The powerful animal auraof the external man, which often appears to aclairvoyantas bright red in color, is of great

or at least upon close physicalproximityto their subjects. This animal magnetism, which isby no means confined to human beings,is generated copiouslyby strong, healthyani-als

phases, instinctivelyf not deliberately. Thisgrade of aura, though copious and useful on asuperficialplane of action, is not capable ofbeing extensivelyemployed in mental teleg-aphy

or in distant healing, and because this isso it is no uncommon experience to meet peoplewho successfullypractise the most externalphases of Suggestion, oral and visual treat-ent,

who fail to perceive that suggestion canalso prove thoroughly effective when all out-ard

agents are absent or withdrawn. Themore dependent a man or woman is on personalappearance and tricks of voice and manner, themore superficialis apt to be that individual'swork, and though endowed with a large shareof personal magnetism he or she is verylikelyto be forgottenreadily, even by enthusi-stic

admirers, after they have removed to aconsiderable physical distance from the attrac-ive

operator. The successful telepathist, hocan soon learn to give absent treatments forhealth and general welfare successfully,s oftensome one whose intellectual attractiveness faroutweighs all personal charm, and who capti-ates

the minds rather than allures the physicalsenses of those who are impressible. The auraof a highly intellectual man or woman, viewedclairvoyantly,is often distinctivelyellow in

hue, sometimes of a rich golden color; theeffect of such an aura is to stimulate the mentalfaculties of all who may prove susceptible, tocalm the physicalemotions, and to regulate thenerves.

The practiceof mental telephony is easilycomprehended by analogy, now that Marconi'ssimple system of wireless telegraphy is prov-ng

abundantly demonstrable. Ether is a com-rehensiveword, and it will serve very well

for our present purpose as we seek to conveysomething like a definite picture of howthoughts (or their effects)are transmitted fromplace to place and from intellect to intellect.

THOUGHTS ARE FORCES is a widelyaccepted saying, and one which embodies amighty truth of the highest ethical import, for,if we believe this or anything like it,we shallcertainlybe led to be far more cautious in thethought realm than is usual. Thoughts areresults of brain action, but intelligenceovesupon a brain and sets it in definite motion. Amaterialist is wont to say that brain secretesthought as liver secretes bile ; but even if thisstatement be measureably true, and we arescarcely profited by pronouncing it entirelyfalse, the query remains, How does liver secretebile? It is only through the agency of a living

liver that bile is secreted, and it is only throughthe medium of a livingbrain that thoughts areproduced. Instruments of thinkingthe varioussections of the brain decidedly may be, in thesense in which we speak of musical instru-ents,

through the agency of which musiciansrender music ; but the men and women, instru-entalists,

are they who reallyproduce thesounds we love to hear, for not only do instru-ents

require players or they would be value-ess ^theymust have fashioners and tuners also

or they could not exist and be kept in readinessfor use. Between human individualitynd per-onalitythere is almost as much difference as

between a cornetist and a cornet. Leadbeater'sdefinition of person from persona, meaningsomething through which sound proceeds, isundoubtedly accurate, and if such a discrimi-rnation between different terms, which are oftenbewilderinglyconfounded, were kept clearlyinview, controversy would soon wax less fierceand language would become more generallyintelligible.

The several bodies of man, enumerated byTheosophists as each within the other and vari-usly

made manifest in differingstages of hu-anevolution, afford a profoundly interesting

theme for continuous research. The theory is

Environment and circumstance, when thesewords are used purely in their singular signifi-cance, refer entirelyo individual aura, thoughin their plural form of circumstances and en-ironments

they may properlybe used to desig-atethe sum of those external conditions which

more remotely environ us. The orderlyclassi-ication, mind, body and estate, exactly con-eys

the process whereby the aura is generatedand thrown off. The first act is generative, thesecond act is propulsive, when we considerhow aura is constituted and then how it is utiUizeij Poets and painters have evidentlydrawnvery largelyupon the results of seershipin giv-ng

Christian Scriptures, and also with ClassicMythology, followed by a study of later sym-olic

art, would bring forward an immensearray of concurrent testimony to the fact thatall over the earth the knowledge of the humanaura has at some time spread. Then when weread accounts by Baron von Reichenbach ofhis experiments demonstrating odylic force orodyle,we shall see that recent European exper-mentalists

reached a conclusion not widely dif-erentfrom ancient Egyptians and Hindus.

^^ Not only have human beings been credited withgenerating a health aura, which they often free-ydispense to those weaker than themselves,

but all consecrated temples have been chargedwith this effusion, which, in the first instance, must have proceeded from some human beings, though frequentlysacred places were said topossess it to such a degree that healing hasoften been accomplished in a temporarily de-erted

temple. The modern suggestionistwho follows Lie-bault and Bernheim almost exclusively has a

tendency to unduly ignore, and sometimes evento stoutlyrepudiate, the action of a force whichMesmerists and magnetists are apt to overesti-ate.

A wise middle course needs to be foundand to be steadilyursued between th^ extreme

of mental suggestionism and an overratingof^physicalexudations^The Bible, in both Testa-ents,gives many instances of both aspects

of this immense subject. We read in someplacesof an energy actuallygoing forth from ahealer to a patient, and of this energy beingtransmitted in a decidedly corporeal manner;we also find numerous records of what wouldnow be called absent mental healing. Noth-ng

is lost to any rational metaphysicalsystemby granting to animal magnetism a certainsubordinate position as a transmissive agent;indeed it seems absurd to deny, if metaphysicalpremises have been accepted, that it can possi-ly

be otherwise than that our mental condi-ionshould most extensively affect our phy-iqueand all its emanations. If every practi-ionerof massage and of osteopathy,as well as

every announced magnetic healer, understoodsomething definitelyoncerning aura and howit is generated, purified,nd vitiated, initiallyin all cases by mental activities, ^a very greataddition would quicklybe made to the benefitsaccruing as results of the practiceof these vari-us

often follow from the mental and mag-etictreatments given by uniformed persons,

because if people live in good-will to theirneighbors and are at peace within themselves, they unconsciouslygenerate a good, healthyaura, which helps delicate, sensitive suffererswho are brought into contact with it.

The health aura is clairvoyantlyescribed asrose pink in color, and from this originalvision, which dates to remote antiquity,we have be-omefamiliar with rose-colored as a termimplying cheerful and optimistic.Rose-coloredglassesdo literallyonduce to cheerfulness, inaccordance with the readilyascertained law ofcorrespondential suggestion. Thus it is thatfrom within to without and from without towithin is a perpetuallyalternating or reflex-natural process, leading to the continuance ofinductive and deductive schools alike of philos-phy

and medicine. Plato and Aristotle sim-lyviewed the same phenomena from exactly

opposite standpoints, and their respective dis-iplesdo preciselythe same to-day. The Pla-

developed most of all is regular rhythmicbreathing, the importance of which can scarce-ybe overestimated. To breathe righteouslyisto use the entire lung capacityfor inhaling andexhaling air,and in connection with the inhal-ng

mond-Iike brightness, all imaginable tints andhues of color radiatingfrom a perfect centre,no other mental suggestion in the field of colorsymbolism can equal it in beauty or inclusive-ness. But as our most deeply felt necessitiesare often distinctlyarticularand relative, andperfect whiteness denotes the absolute, we dowell to distinguishthoughtfullybetween colorvalues and map out for our specialedificationprecisely that shade of color which signifiesthe manifest expression of exactly that mentalqualitywhich we desire most of all immediatelyto express. Chromopathy, as taught and prac-ised

by Dr. E. D. Babbitt, is an elaborate yetsimple system, based on extensive knowledgeof color values, and this system can be reallymastered in a comparatively short time by seri-us

students of average ability. The specialtherapeiiticffects of color are more completelyset forth in the writings of Dr. Babbitt than byany other author with whose publicationsweare familiar. From the teachingsof Dr. Bab-itt

we deduce the fallowing general conclu-ions:

RED is always a stimulant, tending to arouseevery facultywhich is subjectedto its influence ;consequently, lightadmitted through red glassor even red furniture, clothing, flowers, paint

or wall paper is recommended for all personswhose tendencies are sluggish or despondent.Red, in all its various degrees, ranging frompale pink to vivid scarlet, can be used with ad-antage

as a stimulant. Pink is especiallyon-uciveto awakening hope, and is consequently

an effective antidote for melancholia ; while allpronounced shades of red, due to more power-ul

etheric vibrations, stimulate both mind andbody to the utmost activity.

BLUE is particularlybeneficial in all caseswhere excitement has been too intense; it istherefore to be employed in all feverish situa-ions.

Blue glass was never a craze, but, itsefficacybeing necessarilylimited,it could notpossiblyprove a cure-all or universal panacea. When sunlightis not obtainable, electric lightaffords an effective substitute ; in every modemhome it ought to be easy to practisechrorao-pathy to some extent. Red and blue are thecolors which are most frequently required, asthey are perfect opposites, red being the uni-ersal

stimulant and blue the universal sedative, but YELLOW must not be ignored, and thoughits influence is not quiteso generallyrecognizedas that of blue or red, from palestprimrose tobrightest amber yellow has a large field inwhich to work, especiallys an aid to intellec-

treatment.VIOLET, which is the most spiritualof the

seven prismatics, is also an antidote for manynervous perturbations, because its tendency isto lead our thoughts away from the petty caresand trivial anxieties of the external world, anddirect our attention toward the abidingrealitiesof the celestial realm.

Dr. Babbitt relates intenselyinterestingasesof the cure of lunacy through the aid of proper-yadjusted color. We all know that mentalaberrations are of many varieties, and that in-anity

ranges all the way from stupid, solidmelancholy to the most violent and dangerousexcitability.orbid taciturnity, hich is a notuncommon phase of mania, must be treatedwith red, and it is reported that an eminentItalian specialist,r. Ponga, director of theLunatic Asylum at Alexandria, has placed pa-ients

in rooms properly colored to suit theirspecialnecessities with such good effect thatmorbid taciturnityhas, within a few hours, given place to healthy cheerfulness. Anothermaniac, who could take no food whatever else-here,

ficial,ut they are required for the occupancyof violent maniacs, who are often very quicklyquietedby the soothing, tranquillizingflfect ofblue. Violet has been known to cure a patientin a single night, according to the same testi-ony.

This shows that color forces act both by dayand by night, though when the lightis mostintense the effect is apt to be most quicklypro-uced,

especiallywhen arousing rather thanwhen quieting influences are needed. Thewhole scheme of Color Therapeutics is ex-remelyfascinating,and it opens a most de-ightful

as well as fruitful field for all whoprefer to operate with the finer than with thecruder grades of the force of nature. The ele-ent

of suggestion can never be eliminatedfrom any varietyof healing practice; thereforeit is not feasible to endeavor to decide exactlyto what extent color has done a work apartfrom mental influences actingindependentlyofphysical accessories. But this admission farfrom weakening the efficacyf color treatment, tends decidedly to increase and strengthen it,because it opens up an enormous field for in-estigat

in the purely psychicdomain, whichwe often term a distinctlyuper jectiverealm. We are not always so situated, especiallyf we

The occultmethod of practisingchromopathy is to closethe external eyes and make a distinct mentalpicture of a belt or ring of color around theentire person. Make your auric effluence ob- ,jectiveon the plane of mental vision. See your-elf

may be, you have gained repose andreached a state of equilibrium, otherwise prac-ically

    SPECIFIC INTERPRETATIONS.

Having already outlined the principal fea-uresof the philosophy of color and its signifi-ance,which it is now our province to more

definitelyand precisely elucidate, we shall callattention specificallynot only to the broad gen-ral

principles of the subject, but seek also toenter into particular details.

First and last, it must be remembered thatthere can be no bad colors, though there can bediscordant combinations. Black, which is thevery negation of color, is only a backgroundfor all colors, and has exactly the use in Natureto which the blackboard is put in a classroom. With white chalk we make demonstrations ona black surface. The extreme of contrast ishere displayed, but there is no evil suggested byblack in this connection; on the contrary, itserves a useful purpose by bringing white let-ering

into high relief. Black and whitesketches are another but entirely differentphase of the same contrast when an artist makesblack markings on a white surface, thereby

mancy, which originallymeant death-dealing.White magic is synonymous with leucomancy, which signifiesight-dispensing.^

' We will now endeavor to explain the rangeof Red, the first and lowest of the primaries orprismatics, when viewed from the earthly sideof evolution, but the highestalike of the threeand of the seven, when viewed from the spir-tual

or osoteric plane of involution. Ascentmust ever begin where descent ends. Thespiritualentityprior to expression on earthmust drape itself with a robe of aura or itcould not enter into the external world. Theviolet ray is its first covering ; then, in turn, itwraps itself around with purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red finally.Having takenthe seven preliminary steps of descent it ap-ears

on earth as Adam, the man clothed in redgarments. The Adamic or Red Race is theearliest of the seven races which find expres-ion

on this planet, and the universalityf redis to be discovered in the fact that healthy hu-an

blood is red everywhere, and that a naturalredness of skin betokens health, while pallorisindicative of weakness.

The darker shades of red denote affectionof a primitive,self-regardingtype, not proper-y

    designated selfishness in the distinctlyn-

pleasant usage of that term, but self-preserva-tiveness, unillumined by thought or regard forothers. This primitiveestate is common to in-ancy,

and when not outgrown as age advances, leads to unpleasant results in time of maturity.

An aura of murky red suggests uncleanli-ness, symbolizes vitiated passion, and acccnn-panies all psychic and mental states which tendtoward jealousy, hatred and all unrighteousanimosities. Sensualityis pictured forth by avery sordid earthy red, in which a suggestionof black is always present, because sensual im-ulses

are unenlightened, and gravitatetowardshadow rather than toward sunlight.

Pure affection is typifiedby clear bright red, like to the ruddy blaze of a cheerful fire, whichindicates lovingwelcome, the very embodimentof the spiritof hospitality.Black stoves cannever bestow cheerfulness upon a home, how-ver

much heat they may radiate ; thus it hap-ensthat open fireplacesin cold climates are

always welcome and deservedlypopular.Bright red in the sky always augurs wind, in-ense

heat, or some marked excitement in theatmosphere; lurid red is an invariable pre-curser of tempests.

Anger is an emotion whose correspondingcolor is red, but the shade or qualityof red

which anger displaysvaries with the nature andsource of the emotion. What is often calledrighteous indignationemits a brilliant scarletflame, and while it literallyauses the cheeksand often the entire countenance to blaze, as itis prompted by love of justiceand detestationof unfair dealing and oppression, it is not sul-ied

by any sinister shadows. Avarice is shownby a dull, heavy, perverted shade of red, notvery easilydistinguishablefrom the hue ofsensuality, ith which it is allied quite closelyin originand sentiment. The bridge from Red to Yellow is Orange, and on this bridge we find pride displayed,giv-ng

forth an auric radiation of red-orange tint.Pride is,at its best, not an unworthy emotion,as it is usually the harbinger of some higherstate of intellectual advancement. Proper pride, and reasonable ambition are the usual accom-animents

of a strong though unchastened in-ellectbut a higher condition than pride of in-ellectis expressed by the absence of much of

the red which pride carries with it and thepresence of brilliant amber. Amber has forages been associated with strength, and manyhave been the chains of amber beads whichpeople have worn about their necks to antidotepulmonary weaknesses and to stimulate more

than simply the vocal system. This practicehas been founded upon very ancient knowledgeregarding the formation of amber and the ther-peutic

potency of the orange ray in the spec-rum,which affords nervous stimulation and

often proves of decided help to students, whether administered chromopathicallyin ac-ordancewith Dr. Babbitt's system of Lightand Color, or by means of any other methodaccessible or convenient of application.rangeas an ingredient in the human aura always de-notes mental vigor, and is found most fre-uently

among people who are leaving primi-iveanimality and searching for intellectual

illumination.Yellow, the second primary, denotes the

mental realm extricated entirelyfrom the era-braces of the material ; therefore, the brightest, clearest yellow betokens the highest and puresttype of intellect. A pale primrose-colored lightevinces a soft, gentle, intellectual disposition, very pure, but not very vigorous. The lightershades of yellow are quieting in the extreme toan overwrought nervous condition, and peoplewho generate aura of that hue accomplish oftena great deal in the direction of healingby theirquiet, regulating presence.

thing and is the color which is between theouter and the inner, or the higher and the lower, worlds or planesof consciousness, is significantof universal adaptability. Clear, bright emer-ld

green is always attractive,nd gives a senseof home wherever one may be travelling.hispurely natural color is beheld clairvoyantlyinconnection with people who are ardent loversof nature, and who, though their love of nativecountry may be great, can find and enjoy a homeamong green hills, fields and valleys every-here.

Homesickness is banished by green, and tired eyes are rested by green spectacles.Green lamp shades are particularlyestful, andthis color will be found a valuable soporific, nantidote to all that induces insomnia.

The lightershades of green are indicative ofsympathy ^not the maudlin or misdirected sym-athy

which increases trouble by dwelling uponit, but that gracious, helpful sympathy whichenvirons a suflferer with fresh and pleasantcon-itions

suggesting release from bondage to apainful environment. Green of the paler typeis very encouraging to sensitive persons whoare apt to be easilydispirited,nd it will befound that people usually are helped most notby the color which already predominates intheir aura but by a hue which is lacking, which

will makes its appearance when a higher de-elopmeof symmetry has been attained.

Though green is often figurativelyssociatedwith deceit and jealousy, and we have all heardof a green-eyed monster/' whose acquaintancewe desire to be rid of, as many sensitives haveexplained, it is only a sullied and debased con-ition

of green which denotes treachery.Noth-ngcould be more ridiculous than to believe

that the beautiful color of grass and foliage, which we all instictivelydmire, indicates any-hing

unrighteous. It is only a perverted orvitiated state of aura or condition of color whichcan ever show forth anything abnormal.

BLUE, the third and highest of the pri-aries,is always complimented, true blue

being one of our most familiar expressions in-endedto denote sincere friendshipand gen-ral

sincerityin all relations of life. Amongblue stones the sapphire is typicalof wisdomand the turquoise of fidelity. When a pale blueaura is seen surrounding any person, it provesthat the nature which generates such an aurais aspirationaland gentle. Blue is always thecolor of the sky in clear weather, but what wegenerally term sky blue in our color schemeis an intense and rather brilliant hue. This sig-ifies

In the employment of blue therapeutically, whether through chromopathic treatment or bymeans of an altogethersubjectiveor psychicalmethod of visualizing,he paler blue tints areextremely restful, while intense degrees of bluedenote and induce a reposeful condition ofactivity, hich is readilyunderstood by all whohave learned something of the blessed art ofworking continuouslyand effectively,nd, atthe same time, easily.Hard work has no placein the blue region, though nowhere can morework be done, and the work done by those whohave reached the state denoted by clear brightblue aura is of an abiding as well as of an ex-ellent

quality. The bluish grey, which indicates fear, and

often accompanies ill-regulatedonscientious-ess,is the aura of timid natures, whose relig-ousimpulses may be strong, but whose

religiousbeliefs are largelyshadowed by fearand tinctured with misgiving. To have anattack of the blues is to be depressed in spirit, and whenever we catch a glimpse of the auraof a person thus afflicted we find it bluish g^ey,never intense blue, and its condition is alwajrstremendous.

The sixth note in the scale is,however, im-erfect; therefore only earthlyor temporal do-inionis indicated by purple or indigo. The

mysterious Apocalypse or Book of Revelationsignificantlyeclares that 666 is the number ofthat entire system of external authoritywhichis in its essential nature corruptible, though notnecessarilycorrupt, and which will eventuallydisappear, after having achieved magnificentexternal triumphs, to make way for a stillhigher order expressible only by the employ-ent

of the number 7.VIOLET, the seventh color in the rainbow-

spectrum, denotes the highest of all earthlyattainments.

Joseph's coat of many colors, mentioned inGenesis, is a very ancient allusion to the auraof a seer or prophet, though the circumstancesof his receivingthis garment as a giftfrom hisfather, Jacob (whose name is changed toIsrael) is slightlyobscure, except in the com-aratively

    unimportant letter of the narrative.

.In the order of spiritualdevelopment no onejcan truly give anything to another, because' each individual must earn his raiment for him-elf

and make acknowledgment of thisin a manner not to the likingof less developedbrothers of the prophet, who are foolish enoughto feel envy or jealousywhen superior abilityis displayed by another and that superioritymeets with rightfulrecognition. Very muchvaluable information concerning aura is to bemet with in Spiritualisticliterature, whichabounds with statements to the effect that webuild our own psychic bodies and weave ourpsychic raiment. spiritualintercommunion between affinitizingminds can be assisted by the violet ray, and it iseasy to demonstrate the potency of this color byintroducingit on occasions of bereavement andmourning, where it rightfullybelongs, andwhere black is an odious impertinence. I theritual of the Christian Church from very earlytimes violet has been introduced on penitentialdays, as it is intended and calculated to lift thethoughts of worshippers from earth to heaven. At memorial services violet is always in place, and those who approve the practiceof wearinga specialdress at funerals and for some periodafter the transition of a friend or relative willdo well to substitute violet for black on all oc-asions.

A violet aura is indicative of what is com-onlytermed a dreamy, visionary character,

but we must not forget that seers and dreamerscan be thoroughly robust, and though usuallysomewhat more finelyand delicatelyorganizedthan the bulk of their contemporaries, they canenjoy perfect health and exhibit any amount ofphysicalas well as mental endurance which themajority of their more grossly constitutedneighbors cannot possibly endure without aspeedy breakdown. The more widely differentone's aura is from that of one's neighbor, the

many varieties of destructive parasites, andthose remarkable healers whose very pres-nce

Connecting the seven prismatichues with theseven vowels, we associate red with A, orangewith E, yellow with I, green with O, blue withU, indigo with W, and violet with Y. Thoughfive vowels are all that are commonly acknowl-dged

by grammarians, the two supplementaryvowels, W and Y, find their place in language, just as indigo and violet have their positioninthe spectrum. A, the red note, is the beginningof everything; it is always introductory, and itcan also prove a good terminal, because it de-otes

Names which begin and end with Aare names of dignityand deep significance.Asnames were originallytitles, and all meantsomething definite, the old Latin phrase,Nomenest omen (A name is an omen), can readilybeunderstood. As the musical scale begins withA, so the indefinite article or universal prefixis the note of universal ejaculation, whensounded broadly, as in correct singingand in thecommon speech of all Latin races. Broad A(pronounced like an English Ah) is the firstaspirate, and is a full red tone, which deepensin color commensurately with depth and fulnessof intonation.

E, the second vowel, suggests at once thequalityof orange, desire for fuller expression, reaching out and up, seeking for combination orco-operation with another element.

I, the third vowel, is the great dominant in-ividualaffirmation of conscious entity, and

may be compared to a backbone in language. The color yellow, denoting fulness of intellect-al

    development, possesses preciselythis char-cter.

The fourth vowel O, like the note D and theaccompanying color green, indicates research,

inquiry, surpriseat findingoneself introducedto unaccustomed surroundings. We instinct-vely

exclaim Oh when we encounter some-hingunfamiliar,and though sometimes this is

an exclamation of pain, it is oftener merely acry of wonder.

U, the fifth vowel, like blue in the color scale,is the outreaching note, which seeks to giverather than to receive, to distribute rather thanto hoard ; its place in language, as in the Eng-ish

you (the neighbor) and the French out(yes) ishighlysignificantf its moral value.

W and Y represent higher stages of attain-entthan come within the customary range of

average experience. The omission of W fromthe French language and the place of Y in alge-ra

suggest something of the primal value ofthese additional vowels.

Descending now into the lower octaves ofcolor, we are confronted by grays, browns andother sombre and neutral tints which are belowour common color register.Though the spec-rum

and the rainbow can reveal them, they aresub-tints and belong to those regions in Naturewhich Occultists call elemental. THE HUMAN AURA AS AN INDICATOR OF HEALTHAND CHARACTER^ WITH REFLECTIONS

    ON THE AURA OF HABITATIONS.

To the clairvoyant who can see the humanaura distinctly, whether in the dark or in thelight, the vision of it is a very great aid in theimportant work of rightful diagnosis and prog-osis.

Clairvoyance is susceptible of cultiva-ion,though in some instances it is unmistak-blya natural endowment or gift; but when

such is the case we are by no means justifiedindeciding that it cannot be more perfectly un-olded

by judicious exercise. There seems much confusion of thought prev-lent

in the world today regarding naturalgiftsand their possible cultivation, but the mys-ery

enveloping this subject will soon disappearif we take reason for our guide and pay properattention to general human experience. Takemusic or any other art as an example. Nothingcan be much more self-evident than that musi-al

genius is inherent or inborn : this has beendemonstrated to such an extent with such bril-

Hant examples as Handel, Mozart and othersof rare ability, hat the saying, poets are born, not made, is as applicablein principleto musi-ians

in general as to bards in particular. Butgranting that Sarasate is a born violinist, andPaderewski a born pianist,we have not anydifficultyn tracingthe fact that these singularlygiftedinstrumentalists owe their continued prb-ficiencyas- performers on their respectivein-trumen

to unceasing practice;their execu-ioncould not continue brilliant unless they kept

themselves constantly in training or in trim. The case is not radicallyifferent when we turnour attention to those peculiarlysensitive in-ividua

whose field of action is especiallyinthe psychic realm, for though numberless in-tances

may be cited of mediumistic chil-renwhose psychic susceptibilitiesanifested

themselves quite spontaneously, we shall sooncome to see, if we pursue our investigationsat all extensively, that if the fires of inspirationare not constantly fed with aspirationtheysoon sink down and burn dimly, even thoughthey are never totallyextinguished.

The extremely delicate aura which encirclesa particularly sensitive person is no moreadapted for the ordinary man or woman who iscalled to do rough work in the world than a

type have their certain uses, and theyeed in these days the same sheltered environ-ent

which was freelygranted to them in thepalmy days of ancient or classic Paganism. The materialistic Christianityof recent cen-uries

has almost banished seership from theearth in consequence of the crass ignoranceof its professors concerning psychic life andlaw, but with the revived interest, now nearlyeverywhere conspicuous, in psychic phenom-na,the probabilityof reviving the old templemethods is becoming daily more encouraging.

To all students of the Mysteries of Egyptand of Greece who look below the mere surfaceof ritual and ceremony, it is quite evident thatthe aura of buildings was considered a matterof great importance, and in Christendom theancient faith has always, to an extent, survived, especiallyin those countries where churchesare held particularlyacred. The very objec-ionable

practice, sadly in vogue in Europe, ofmaking churches very largely show places, tends to emphasize the lamentable decline inknowledge which pervades the ecclesiasticalconfraternity, for every one who knows some-hing

of the effect of turning sanctuaries into

playgrounds understands how detrimental isthe effect of thus vulgarizingtemples originallyset apart for spiritualses to the exclusion ofeven honest secular associations. There arecertain secular uses, purely educational, forwhich consecrated places may profitablybeemployed, but the search for valuable knowl-dge

on the part of sincere and earnest studentsbears no relationshipto gaping curiosityandidle sightseeing. Mohammedans preserve theaura of their mosques far more effectuallythan European Christians preserve the aura oftheir churches. There is no sin in any

formof harmless recreation or innocent amusement, and there is no vice in simple levity, but theatmosphere is so affected by frivolitythat aplace soon becomes unfavorable for purposesof high devotion and noble consecration whichis given over extensivelyto simple amusementseeking.

The healing effects of the temple sleep, forwhich many historians have vouched, can bereadily accounted for on a strictlyscientificbasis directly one considers how zealouslyguarded were the sanctuaries in which thosewonders of recuperation were performed. Thedisagreeableexpression,z sick room, is quiteaccurate, for the chambers in which invalids

them is due, in large measure, to thegloomy, depressingthoughts which are gener-ted

within their walls and also carried intothem from the outside. It has become an al-ost

universal practice to approach a sickchamber with a stealthytread, an uncannymanner and a stiltedlyubdued voice. Thesebad practicesare well meant, but they are ex-remely

mischievous, performing, as they do,a twofold bad result, for they not only serve tofurther depress an already unduly depressedatmosphere, but they also render all who in-ulge

in them susceptible to an influx ofdisease when coming in contact with a sufferer.

The HEALTH AURA, whether of a personor of an apartment, when well developed, isfirm and, in a mild sense, it may even be calledaggressive. There went forth virtue out ofhim, is a very explicitstatement applied toa healer of unusual vigor and efficiency.Vir-ue

(from virtus) means strength, energy, force, proceeding from Vir, the superiormsui,in contradistinction from the merely animalemanations proceeding from Homo, the ordin-ry

man. Virtue, in the technical sense, maybe defined as unusual copiousness of healthaura.

A fine suggestion is given in the eighth chap-erof the Gospel according to Matthew, where

we are informed that a leper said to Jesus,If thou wilt thou canst make me clean. Thespecialpoint in the narrative would be entirelymissed did we fail to note the important factthat the leper was evidently reached in thefirst instance by the emanation of virtue fromthe healer before the healer undertook to turnhis attention to the leper. Leprosy was, andstill is, in many places, regarded as an in-urable

disease, and the fact of a man thusafflicted expressing his conviction that he couldbe healed goes very far to illustrate the feelingof one who come into palpable though unex-ected

contact with a mightier healing forcethan any which he had been taught to believeexisted.

The aura of an Adept or Master diflfersgreatly in degree from that of a disciple, though the disciple'saura may be much ofthe same qualityas his Master's if that discipleis far along the road of discipleship.

An aura is far more frequently felt thaseen, because it requires a somewhat unusu-lly

high degree of clairvoyanceto see whatis usually quite readilyfelt. Though we arecommonly accustomed to speak of our five

ceed remarkably well where the other or otherswill meet with what looks like dismal failure.Christian Scientists, whose method of treat-ent

rigidlyconforms to an established rule, serve to illustrate this fact significantly,nd itis indeed acknowledged sufficientlyn theirstandard text book, Science and Health, withKey to the Scriptures, in which the author.Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy, distinctlyays thata stage may be reached in the career of a healerwhere only his or her presence is required, the time for all stated formulas, whether de-ials

or affirmations, having been outlived.Though the aura of a buildingis a matter of

some considerable importance, we must notforget that the building receives its consecra-ion

from some human beings who have eithersimply inhabited it or performed some specialdedicatory ceremonies within its walls. Thebeautiful rite of consecration is founded inscience,so is the custom of dedicatingchildren. It is easy enough for agnostics to cry super-tition,

    but superstitiononly means super-tructure,if we trace the origin of the word ;

and so it was evidentlyunderstood three hun-redyears ago, when the authorized version of

the New Testament was made in the reign ofJames I. of England. In the seventeenth chap-

ter of the Acts of the Apostles we encounterthe phrase too superstitious, therwise trans-ated,

inordinatelyreligious, both expres-ionsclearlyshowing that the writer of the

original must have made reference to a top-heavy intellectual edifice, the foundation underwhich was insufficient to sustain so large apile.

In the same book of the New Testament weare told of Peter's shadow, and of the hopeentertained that sick people might be cured ifIt rested upon them, and we read also of hand-erchiefs

and aprons which had been used andworn by certain other apostlesbeing employed, and not without success, in the work of whatmay be justly termed psychomagnetic treat-ent.

The prevalent beliefs of an unscien-ificmultitude may not always agree with the

dicta of universitygraduates, but the commonpeople usually base their beliefs on their ex-eriences

without reasoning very deeply in con-ectionwith any proposition, and their cur-ent

beliefs in any neighborhood will usuallystand the test of a fair share of quite crucialinvestigation.Elaborate theories interest col-egians,

but they are of littlevalue to the rankand file of humanity among whom feeling}counts for more than doctrine.

We often hear it remarked that women aremore intuitive than men, therefore in some re-pects

their judgment is more reliable. If thisstatement is true, it is due to a combination ofdistinct causes. First, the greater general deli-acy

of the female organism over that of themale; Second, the more secluded life whichthe average woman lives compared with theaverage man. Those first impressions aboutwhich we often hear much, in all cases wherethey are not too superficiallybased to beworthy of deep consideration, are due to con-actwith some one's aura on the part of someone sensitive enough to experience a result oc-asioned

by the contact. The health aura should always be well de-eloped

in ministers of religions, especiallythose who take part in the performance ofceremonies which have a physical as well aspsychicalside. The healthy views entertainedby the best type of pre-Christian pagans werereadilyaccepted by the more intelligent, ndtherefore less fanatical, among the leaders inthe earliest Christian Church. This is clearlyindicated in the beautiful, highly practicalepistleof James, in which we are told to callupon elders of the religiouscongregation intime of sickness ; for it was the general prac-

oil as well as offeringprayers for the recoveryof the afflicted. There are clergymen at worktoday in the Established Church of Englandseeking to re-establish the service of unctionfor the sick, and we sincerelyhope they willbe successful in doing even more than revivingan ancient practicewhich ought never to haveibeen permitted to fall into disuse. It will benecessary for those good clergymen to keepthemselves in excellent health if they are tosucceed in demonstrating the good work inwhich they are righteouslytaking active in-erest,

for if they consecrate and apply thechrism, they will certainlycommunicate theiraura both to the element they vitalize by theconsecrative act and to the patientswhom theyanoint with the oil they have vitalized bybreathing into it.

The hideous facts relating to infectiousmaladies and contagious diseases which havebeen most industriouslyaccumulated and cir-ulated

during the past many years must owbe offset by new discoveries and demonstra-ions

in the field of infectious health and con-agiousvirtue. The purblind atheist scientists

intelligence,ut intellects are becloudedand bodies corrupted by constant perversionsof order instigatedby so-called commissionersof health.

We often hear complaints made among Spir-tualistand others who are interested in thesuccessful production of psychic phenomenathat it is very difficult to obtain satisfactoryproofs of clairvoyance,nd we cannot shut oureyes to the ugly fact that illness is quite com-on

among sensitive persons who are said tobe in unusually close communion with spiritualspheres. This sad state of affairs can be rem-died

whenever and wherever people are will-ngto seriouslyaddi^ess themselves to the task

of purifyingtheir aura, and to accomplish thismuch-needed work it is necessary, first of all,to attend to those intenselypracticalquestionsof breathing, exercise, raiment and diet, whichmany presumably highlygiftedpeoplesteadilyignore*

Because there are two sides to these ques-ions,one esoteric and the other exoteric, quite

a largienumber of modern students of psychicproblems have drifted into false positionsre-arding

the relations existingbetween mindsand bodies. Thoughts are the parents of wordsand actions; all acts and speech can be justlyregarded as some expression of thought, butwe must not overlook the facts of interactionand retroaction. Mind produces body, butbody reacts on mind. Thoughts antecjate ex-ernal

conditions, but these, their physical ul-timates, re-suggest their originators; thus itcomes to pass that every truly noble thoughtfavorably affects our health aura, and ourhealth aura, when well developed, inclinesthose who feel its power to think as w e havethought so as to produce it likewise.

The psychic aura is within the physicalasthe psychicalor astral body is also within thephysical, but the aura encircles as well as per-eates

a human body ; therefoi^e it can, whensufficientlyopious in extent and penetrativein quality,be felt at quitea long distance fromthe body of its generator. Telepathy, or feel-ng

telepathicphenomena, it may never be possibleto offer a solitarysatisfactoryexplanation ofhow knowledge is transmitted from point topoint. Wireless telegraphyhas alreadythrownsome degree or light on an obscure problem, but there are other factors than waves of etherset in motion by desire and concentration ofdetermination which need to be taken into ac-ount

before a complete solution of telepathycan be given.

The aura of a powerful telepathists cer-ainlyone of the most influential agents inaccomplishing thought transference and dis-ant

healing. In the first case, that of simplytransferring thought forms, the quantity orpotency of the aura of the transmitter is almostthe only factor with which we are greatly con-erned,

but in the second case, where healingis to be performed, qualityof aura is the great-st

point to be considered. We all know thatwe can send messages by certain telegraphicand telephonic means, but the effects whichthose messages must produce wherever theyare received must pertainto the qualityof theforce transmitted. People who are constantlyhurried are rarelysuccessful in an)rthingtheyundertake, because they expend their auricforce in foolish excitability,nd when they do

by a thick belt of thoroughly selfishaura. This fact may account for very muchingratitudeon the side of beneficiaries whosecondition is such that they do not feel, andtherefore cannot respond to or appreciatethekindly thoughts and good wishes which aredirected to them. Leadbeater has aptly rep-esented

the thoroughly selfish individual asincarcerated in a veritable prison house ofmuricy aura, enclosed, as in a cage, behindbars.

These reflections upon the aura, when intel-^ligentlydigested,sufiice to explain despon-ency

and elation, content and discontent, suc-essand failure in all conceivable situations in

which people may find themselves placed. What mental scientists vigorously affirm andproclaim as an indisputabledoctrine is lucidlyinterpretedby students of Occultism, who ac-ually

see as well as feel the aura which sur-oundspeople whose fickleness is unaccount-ble

until one traces its source.^^.y Lack of aura is the chief cause of predispo-ition

to disease, for if we are simply unpro-ectedin the midst of an unwholesome en-ironment

we are extremely liable to succumb.

^^^ Every one travels in his auric belt as theearth in its atmosphere or a turtle in its shell.Heavens and hells and all intermediarycon-itions

are regulatedby aura, and it is on thebasis of this knowledge alone that we canreconcile the various conflictingviews of theso-called future life which is very vaguelydescribed by some clairvoyantsbut very graph-cally

by others. The eminent lecturer andauthor, Emma Hardinge Britten, who was, during a considerable portion of her publiccareer, a distinguishedeeress, used often to de-cribe,during some of her thrillingiscourses, the visions she had seen of dwellers on thethreshold, meaning those unhappy human be-ngs

Marie Corelli,in The Soul of Lilith, has pointed out veryclearlywhat a hell actuallyis, where sheshows that an entranced sensitive serving asa lucide cannot find the hells in space, as Swed-enborg and other giftedseers have describedthem, but they can be truthfullyportrayed asdark belts surrounding only those who gener-te

build around one's self an impermeable aura. While it is perfectlyrue that like attracts

like, it is also true that we are attracted to ouropposites, therefore do we often find the sweet-st

associations of affection grow out of ablending of diametricallyopposite tempera-ents.

But these charming unic^is are likeharmonies in music, and in every field of artwhere sounds and colors contract and blendand melt into glorioussymphonies.

Love and hate, courage and fear, can neverblend, because such emotions are contradic-ories

which destroy each other, not polar op-ositeswhich melt into perfectunity.

The Human Aura 67There is another aspect of the law of attrac-ion

which is far too seldom recognized, andthat is the attraction which the sinner feelstoward the saint and the sick person to thehealthy. A very littleintelligenteflection onsuch purely natural phenomena is all that isneeded to elucidate so simple a problem.
