The HTSI Conference 2018 Friday 25th of May, Strathpeffer

On the 25th May 2018 the HTSI will host our annual conference in Strathpeffer. This year we will host a discussion

around mental health and wellbeing; because last year, through the work we carried out with colleagues from

within the Public Sector in the development of the Highland Outcome Improvement Plan, you told us that mental

health is an area where more needs to be done.

There are worrying and evident inequalities in mental health outcomes throughout Scotland and a very clear link

between the prevalence of mental ill health and your socioeconomic status, gender and age. Unemployment,

learning disabilities, sexual orientation, domestic abuse, substance misuse and adverse childhood experiences, for

example, place you at a greater risk of mental ill health.

Your chance of having a mental health problem almost doubles if you live within a deprived area. Similarly your risk

of suicide increases more than three times. In 2016, 728 people died of suicide in Scotland, that’s fourteen people a

week or two a day. Per head of population Highland had the third highest level of suicides for all NHS Health Boards

in Scotland over the four year period from 2012—2016; despite an overall reduction in suicide rates over the same

period.

The size and complexity of the subject can be daunting but are there opportunities for us to focus on smaller actions

which we can personally commit to undertake and when combined with other similar commitments start to

generate significant impact? Will the power of many small actions start to tackle the complexity of improving

mental health and wellbeing in Highland more successfully than one larger public sector led agenda? What would

that even look like? Lets find out…..

The full programme is to follow shortly but will include…

Celebratory demonstrations of activities and groups which help contribute towards maintaining good mental

health and wellbeing in Highland.
