It is written in question-and-answer format, and is aimed particularly at small to midsized organizations that may have small human resources departments or no human resources department at all. The book’s contents begin with the interviewing process and continue through termination, thoroughly covering aspects of human resources management, such as human resource policies, orientation of new employees, the performance appraisal process, continuing education, employee retention, compensation and benefits, regulatory issues, and violence in the workplace. The authors are a lawyer and a cofounder of a human resources con- sulting firm. The lawyer is able to address legal issues employers and managers encounter with employees, including dealing with a suspected substance abuser, the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, creating an employee handbook, and discrimina- tion. The consultant pulls from her experiences with managers, and pres- ents scenarios on topics such as hiring, reference checks, and performance appraisals. A resource guide containing templates that may be used for back- ground checks, telephone interviews, and exit interviews also is included. This book would be a valu- able addition to an organiza- tion’s library. It is a great refer- ence for both new and experi- enced managers. Employees also could find it useful if they have questions related to human resource issues and do not have a human resources department available to them.
