Welcome to our Newsletter!

ASDA offers students an opportunity to take an active role in the future of the dental profession. The “Houston Fill” newsletter aims to inform its readers of the numerous opportunities available to dental students through ASDA at University of Texas School of Dentistry. The year kicked off with the annual ASDA Week. This week is geared towards the entire student body as a chance to learn more about your auto-enroll membership into ASDA. We give you a chance to learn what ASDA does on a national level, all the while building camaraderie amongst classmates. We do a little competition to figure out the strongest girl and class in the school while enjoying a few beverages. This year, ASDA week was a complete success, as you can see on Page 3. Browse through this newsletter to gain insight regarding important issues, involvement opportunities and personal experiences from fellow ASDA members. Welcome to the inaugural edition of The Houston Fill! Through this newsletter we hope to keep the student body at UTSD up to date on what ASDA is doing for you, our members, at the local and national level. You don’t need to be an officer to stay informed or get involved, and this publication will help keep us all connected! Our chapter has already kicked off the fall with a successful ASDA Week in September, and the year has only just begun. ASDA is all about student-led political advocacy, community service and networking and we have many entertaining and informative events planned for you all year long. This October we will be holding our annual Political Action Committee (PAC) Drive, and it’s going to be better than ever. You will hear from dental political advocates and learn why it’s important that we all stay involved in organized dentistry in order to protect this incredible profession. This week-long event will be capped off by a happy hour hosted by the Texas Dental Association (TDA), bar tab included! Look out for more details soon. Every student at UTSD is a member of ASDA, so feel free to speak to any officer if you have ideas, questions or would like to get involved in the organization. ASDA WEEK Sept. 4-7 Lunch and Learn

Dr. Adam Shisler, the National ASDA Immediate Past-President and UTSD Class of 2012 Alumni, spoke with UTSD about issues that are currently facing dental students. For example, Dr. Shisler discussed things such as Board testing, dental licensure, and current policies relevant to dental professionals.

School Supply Drive & Ice Cream Social

The ASDA School Supply Drive benefitted needy students around Houston, TX. UTSD students donated paper, crayons, markers, and other school supplies. Not only did our students provide support for our local community, but those who donated also got to participate in the Ice Cream Social!

Girls Arm Wrestling

The Annual Girls Arm Wrestling tournament was a competition between all the dental classes. Not only did everyone cheer on the competitors, students also enjoyed a keg! The DS2 class won bagels and coffee, with Brittni Wait being their wrestling champion!

Happy Hour ASDA Week finished up with a happy hour at Little Woodrows in Midtown. Students drank beers and wound down from their hectic week. The first beer was on ASDA, followed by great happy hour specials. Dr. Hutto, President of GHDS, was also there to socialize.

Lunch and Learn Etiquette

One of the greatest benefits ASDA can provide is education in a safe environment from a number of vendors. We have the opportunity to learn about services and products from other companies without feeling forced by salespeople to buy these products. Every ASDA associated Lunch & Learn provides you with the opportunity to be educated on insurance, products, and services. We are grateful our school allows us to have these Lunch & Learns and it is important to keep in mind the purpose of these free lunches. Though we all could use a free lunch every now and then, we’d like to share some Lunch & Learn “rules” to make the experience more enjoyable for those who actually want to learn what the speaker has to say. Here are a few tips to help alleviate the distractions during a Lunch & Learn:

• Chances are the lunch will always be pizza, but we hope the speaker is the real reason you attend • Please be mindful of those who want to learn from the speaker. If you’re a 1st year and don’t

particularly care about malpractice insurance, leave the lunch for the upperclassmen. • If you need to leave early to set up for clinic, please sit in the back of the room. • With that being said, please don’t only sit in the back of the room. • Please be attentive, most of the vendors bring gift cards to test your knowledge at the end of their

presentation! • If you plan to leave the Lunch ‘N Learn before 12:30, we kindly ask you not attend.

Don’t worry; we have a long list of Lunch & Learns for the remainder of the semester that will provide something for everybody!

Recipe of the Week Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cookies

Original recipe makes 24 cookies - 2 cups smooth natural peanut butter - 2 large eggs - 2 cups sugar replacement (e.g. Splenda)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Lightly grease a baking sheet. 3. Thoroughly mix together the peanut butter, sugar, and eggs in a bowl. Drop mixture by spoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheet. 4. Bake in the preheated oven until center appears dry, about 8 minutes.

ADA teams with PopCap games to focus on pediatric oral hygiene

This fall, the ADA teamed up with PopCap Games to campaign to “Stop Zombie Mouth”. Based on a popular game for PC, iPad, iPod, and Xbox, the ADA plans to help children with their oral hygiene regimen at home. A limited run of one million packs of trading cards featuring characters from the game Plants vs. Zombies are being distributed to thousands of dentists across the country. Each card pack includes a coupon for a free copy of the downloadable PC edition of the game. Any member of the ADA (including ASDA members) can order these cards to distribute to patients. Each member is allowed to order a maximum of 20 kits, which include 50 trading card packs and a poster within each kit. The cards are free of charge for ADA members, minus a small shipping fee. The trading cards feature 45 different zombie types, including those not found in the game and five new characters created for the game representing germs found in a zombie’s mouth.

In addition to the trading cards, the “Stop Zombie Mouth” campaign has created a beneficial website that combines fun and oral hygiene education. The “Learn More” section of the website links to patient education on the ADA website, providing a route to find a dentist, learn about primary teeth, and even a chance to test your oral hygiene knowledge. The website lists the “Top Seven Ways to Stop Zombie Mouth” as the following: (1) Brush for 2 minutes two times per day with fluoride toothpaste, (2) Floss between your teeth daily, (3) Eat fruits and veggies instead of sugary and starchy snacks, (4) Wear a mouth guard while playing sports, (5) Don’t smoke or use tobacco, (6) Don’t pierce your lips or any other part of your mouth, (7) Visit your dentist regularly, Dentists get lonely! The website also offers plenty of downloadable fun including coloring pages, wallpapers, Halloween masks, and Halloween party invites. The campaign will continue through Halloween and provides a dentist-friendly alternative to give trick-or-treaters. Feel free to take advantage of your ADA Student membership and order these trading cards to help your pediatric patients. On October 19, 2012, the UTSD ASDA Chapter, along with predental members from UofH, will host a booth at the Weekley Family YMCA Tailgate Trick-or-Treat Carnival. Here, we will pass out the “Stop Zombie Mouth” trading cards instead of candy as a way to educate children. It is our hope parents will work with their children this Halloween to ensure good hygiene in addition to eating candy from trick-or-treating. Meet the New Officers Graham Reed- First Year Delegate Graham is from Austin Texas and attended Texas A&M and graduated with a B.S. in Biology. He then moved to Houston and attended UTHealth School of Public Health and also worked in epilepsy and Alzheimer's research at Baylor College of Medicine. Graham is very interested in the neuroscience research and in his free time still does a little bit of work for his old lab at Baylor. He enjoys attending aggie football games with his friends and family and loves to escape the city whenever possible to hunt, fish and play golf.

Hunter Owen- Assistant Treasurer

Hunter is from Plano, TX and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with family, playing golf, and working on classic cars.

Kelsey Edmonson- Assistant Outreach Coordinator

The Second year community outreach representative is responsible for organizing and assisting in community outreach projects for our ASDA chapter. Kelsey enjoys running, cycling, experiencing the outdoors, and playing with her dachshunds when she is not in school

Shivani Patel- Assistant Outreach Coordinator

Shivani graduated from Houston Baptist University with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology in May 2012. She was born and raised in England and has lived in Sugar Land, TX for the past twelve years. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family and baking desserts.

Kyle Hale- Assistant Legislative Liason

I studied Biology at Texas A&M and then Health Policy and Management at The School of Rural Public Health at Texas A&M Health Science Center where I received a Masters of Public Health. I am from League City, Texas, a city south of Houston. I am an avid ice hockey player and enjoy playing at local rinks when I am not studying.

Meet the New Officers Marisa McKee- Assistant Events/Meetings Coordinator

My name is Marisa McKee and I am from a small town in East Texas known as Forney, home of the jackrabbits. I graduated from high school in 2008 and then moved to Waco to continue my education at the best university in Texas. I studied at Baylor University where I graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. My best memories from Baylor are from the four years I spent as a cheerleader.

Iliana Saavedra- Pre-Dental Coordinator

My name is Iliana Saavedra and I am originally from Corpus Christi Texas. I attended the University of Houston where I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry. I love attending UTSD and am excited to be apart of ASDA.

Paola Salazar- Pre-Dental Coordinator

Paola is from Venezuela, moved to Houston in 2007. Majored in Psychology with a minor in Biology from the University of Houston. She is very involved in student activities. In addition, she loves hanging out with all her family and friends. In her leisure time, she enjoys watching movies and TV, as well as dancing.

My name is Laura Nelson and I was born in Dallas, TX. I attended UT Austin and received my degree in Human Development and Family Sciences. After graduation, I worked as a dental assistant for a year. My hobbies include running, cooking, and jewelry design. I hope to have an office someday where I can sell jewelry as well as practice dentistry!

My name is Macey Cartrite, and I am from the small town of Sunray, Texas. I attended college at Texas Tech University where I majored in Biochemistry. In my free time I enjoy running, playing basketball, hanging out with my family, and watching

movies with my boyfriend.
