Message from Dr. Howell, Clinical Assistant Professor & Ed.D. Graduate Program Director The spring 2021 semester has concluded on such a positive note! As a nation we have three vaccines available for the COVID-19 virus. This is a tremendous change from a year ago when we were essentially shut down and had scarce understanding of how the virus would impact our daily lives. We celebrated an in person commencement last weekend that was unlikely several months ago. I have thought a lot about these graduates and how they persisted through so much to complete their degree. During their time here at UNC Charlotte many of the graduates witnessed various protests, acts of violence, discrimination, social change, and yes, a global pandemic. Seemingly, nothing could stop this class. Through it all the graduating class of spring 2021 maintained mental fortitude that was tried at every angle. In our time of celebration for those who completed degree completion milestones this semester, I encourage everyone to take some time out for yourself. The summer is almost upon us. Now is the time to create some space to relax and refresh yourself. Thanks to everyone for a productive academic year. I look forward to seeing everyone in August and again congratulations graduates!

The dissertation defense is the final milestone toward degree completion. The defense is a formal
meeting that is open to the public. Students are required to post an announcement of the defense at
least two weeks in advance. They provide the committee with the complete dissertation at least
three weeks in advance of the defense meeting. The meeting may begin with comments from the
chair who will outline the process of the meeting. Congratulations!

Commencement Ceremonies Spring 2021
Under a beautiful blue sky in May, students and faculty came together in celebration. For
many, it was the first time they had seen each other in person in over a year. Oh, what a
joyous occasion! Over the past fourteen months, these graduates experienced challenges,
obstacles, and uncertainty but despite the unprecedented experiences of a global pandemic,
they persevered and achieved the highest level of academic degree awarded. #49er Proud!

Landmark Moment for ERME
The Education Research, Measurement, and Evaluation Department accepted its first cohort of students in
August of 2017. Dr. Ting Sun is the first Ph.D. graduate out of the ERME program in the CATO College
of Educational Leadership. The Ph.D. in ERME prepares educational professionals who seek advanced
research, data analysis, and evaluation skills for a wider variety of educational settings.

The dissertation proposal defense is the second milestone in degree completion of the
doctorate. Students are strongly encouraged to refine a research topic of interest from the onset of
the program. The proposal is usually comprised of chapters 1 – 3 of the dissertations – introduction,
comprehensive literature review, and methodology. This formal proposal meeting requires
submission of the written proposal at least two weeks in advance to the committee and typically a
PowerPoint presentation. Successful completion of all coursework, qualifying examinations, and a
successful dissertation proposal defense acknowledges that a student is now a doctoral candidate and
prepared to proceed with the final dissertation research.
