Advice from a Professor – Dr. Matthew McCabe
– Set reasonable goals for your project. This means asking
the professor for input early on, and not trying to overdo it.
– One of the most brilliant things I've ever read was in a music
education textbook I used when I was a doctoral
student. The author, Michael Mark, wrote "In the 21st
century, everything is interdisciplinary". The more
interdisciplinary your project is, the more you will learn, and
the more you'll be able to use what you learn.
– Set appointments with your professor ahead of time, our
calendars are full (just like yours!). I like to meet and check
up with my honors contract students every 2-3 weeks at a
set time for a report and consultation.

your professor within the first few (1st – 3rd) weeks of
the semester.
• Submit your proposal as soon as possible to allow
time for revision in case it is not approved.
• Start working on your contract as soon as it is
approved so it’s complete before the deadline.
• If you are not able to complete your contract, it will
not affect your grade in the class. However, you will
not earn an Honors designation for the course.
