“Filled with” and “full of” the Spirit

• “Filled with”– A specific, momentary reliance on the Holy

Spirit’s guidance and power:

Acts 4:8“Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ‘Rulers and elders of the people’”




Acts 4:31“And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.”




Acts 13:9“But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him”




Eph 5:18-19“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.”


• “Full of”– A continual reliance on the Holy Spirit’s

guidance and power:

Acts 6:3-5“‘Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.’ The statement found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch.”

How to be filled with the Spirit

• Mind the things of the Spirit:

Rom 8:5-6“For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace”



Gal 5:16“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh”

• Be receptive to the Spirit:

1 Cor 2:14-15“But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one.”

2 Cor 3.17-18“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.”
