The Promise of the Spirit

“Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him

come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ” But this He

spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for

the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

(John 7:37–39, NASB95)

“These things His disciples did not

understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they

remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had

done these things to Him.”

(John 12:16, NASB95)

much fruit.” (John 12:23–24, NASB95)

“It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men

will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. “Even on the male and female

servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. “I will display wonders in the sky and

on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke. “The sun will be turned into

darkness And the moon into blood Before the great and awesome day of the LORD

comes. “And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Will

be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape,

As the LORD has said, Even among the survivors whom the LORD calls.”

(Joel 2:28–32, NASB95)

Why was the Spirit Given?

• To Authorize“You are witnesses of

these things. “And behold, I am sending

forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the

city until you are clothed with power

from on high.” (Luke 24:48–49,

NASB95)

Page 20: The Holy Spirit

20

Why was the Spirit Given?

• To Authorize“He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father

has fixed by His own authority; but you will

receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My

witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the

earth.”(Acts 1:7–8, NASB95)

Page 21: The Holy Spirit

21

Why was the Spirit Given?

• To Authorize“And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; and He made no distinction

between us and them, cleansing their hearts

by faith.” (Acts 15:8–9, NASB95)

Page 22: The Holy Spirit

22

Why was the Spirit Given?

• To Authorize• To

Demonstrate

“These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My

name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; they

will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt

them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will

recover.”(Mark 16:17–18, NASB95)

Page 23: The Holy Spirit

23

Why was the Spirit Given?

• To Authorize• To

Demonstrate

“Therefore, those who had been scattered went

about preaching the word. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and

began proclaiming Christ to them. The crowds with one accord were giving attention to what was said by Philip, as they

heard and saw the signs which he was performing.”

(Acts 8:4–6, NASB95)

Page 24: The Holy Spirit

24

Why was the Spirit Given?

• To Authorize• To

Demonstrate• To Convince

“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin

and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do

not believe in Me; and concerning

righteousness, because I go to the Father and

you no longer see Me…”

(John 16:8–10, NASB95)

Page 25: The Holy Spirit

25

Convinced not Overwhelmed• Not referring to baptism

“in” the Spirit but “by” the Spirit

• Indicates the “convincing” accomplished through the Gospel

• The Corinthians were saved when the Gospel was presented and “hearing believed and were baptized” (Acts 18:8)

“For by one Spirit we were all baptized into

one body, whether Jews or Greeks,

whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one

Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13,

NASB95)
