MASHOBRA

Just 10 kilometers from Shimla in the magnificent Himalayas (western part to be precise), un touched by urbanisation is a popular tourist destination. A town in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, Mashobra was set by the English on the historic H industan-Tibet Road w hen they established Shimla.

Here in the lap o f w orld’s highest m ountain range, nobody can escape the grandeur, mystery and rom ance of the Himalayas. This picturesque little town houses some amazingly beautiful spots. One of the two Presidential retreats in India, a beautiful garden on top of the m ountain called Cragnaino - designed by Cragnaino in British-India, the estate of the Maharaja of Faridkot, Wildflower Hall, the form er residence of Lord Kitchener - the then Commander-in-Chief of British India, is now an Oberoi deluxe m ountain resort and India’s oldest heritage Golf course, better know n as Naldehra.

The Presidential retreat is a com pletely w ooden structure originally constructed in 1850. The President visits Mashobra at least once every year. In May 1948, before returning to London at the end of his mission as viceroy and then governor general of India, Lord M ountbatten and his wife Lady Edwina spent a few weeks in this retreat. The Maharaja of Faridkot’s palace is also famous for the m ost incredible collection of vintage cars and motorcycles.

A favourite escape from the officialdom of Shimla since the days of the British Raj, Mashobra with its thickly forested hills and invigorating climate is an ideal getaway for both relaxation and rejuvenation. More thickly forested than Shimla, M ashobra was greatly favoured by those w ho enjoyed trekking and camping in the hills. It was also a popular spot for Raj picnics. The best known was the annual picnic held during the colourful Sipi Fair in the m iddle o f May. Enjoyed equally by Europeans and locals, the day of the fair was declared a public holiday and all of official Shimla, from the Viceroy down, participated in the outing.

Naldehra Golf Course

Mashobra is part of Shimla Reserve Forest sanctuary and catchm ent area. The natural vegetation com prises pine, oak, cedar or Himalayan deodar, and rhododendron, as well as m aple and horse chestnut interspersed with variegated shrubs, wildflowers and grasses. The wildlife includes monkeys, baboons, jackals, kakkar (barking deer) and the occasional leopard, as well as num erous bird species such as the Himalayan eagle, pheasants, chikor and partridges. During the m onsoons, you can see the clouds slowly roll up the m ountain, reaching up to you and caressing you and hear the w ind whistle through the pines.

Though Mashobra is situated within touching distance of the main market, yet it is totally isolated from any inhabited place.

Here in the m ountain is an enchanting little m eadow called The Talai by the local inhabitants. The road leading to this m eadow m eanders alongside the palace of Maharaja of Faridkot. Further the road leads on to the mesmerising garden - Cragnaino that has som e rare species o f flora. Within walking distance from Mashobra this beautiful picnic spot was originally a villa of Chevalier Federico Peliti, an Italian photographer in India from the times of Q ueen Victoria, who nam ed it in honor of his native town Carignano near Turin in Italy. The villa was later transform ed to a w eekend resort in 1920 and is also referred to in one of the novels by Anita Desai. The road then leads on, through Baldeyan, to India’s heritage Golf course, better known as Naldehra.
