Pastor's Column:

I am looking forward to 2014! On the first Sunday of the year, we will ordain and install two of our newer members of the congregation to the office of Ruling Elder and a three-year term on the session. Over the first few weeks and months of the year Capital Campaign work will continue; we will see the windows on the east side of the sanctuary renewed, and though we don’t have the exact timeline yet, we will also see the installation of the lift in the Education Center that will make the Fellowship Hall and the first floor meeting rooms and offices more accessible. I’ll be teaching two classes the first half of this new semester, and just as they wrap up, we’ll move into the Lenten season and our annual time of reflecting together. The session begins this new year reorganized into three committees, and I have no doubt that new and renewed ministries to our community, with one another, and in this world will unfold in ways we have yet to know about! And I am especially hopeful that the 55 & Under Group will finally come up with a good name for itself, otherwise once my birthday passes, I’ll no longer be eligible for membership in it!

I continue to thank God for each of you and for the faithfulness to Christ’s vision of abundant life for all that you live out in your lives, as evidenced by all we do in this congregation. You inspire me! I hope you’ll join me in anticipating the work that the Spirit will make happen through each of us, bringing hope, joy, peace, love, and sparks of new life to our communities and our world. Happy New Year!

Blessings, Shelley

A sincere thanks to each of you who donated food, gave money, helped shop for food, packed the boxes and then returned for the distribution. Hopefully, each of the 16 families had a Merrier Christmas as a result of the generosity of the Honey Creek church family. Several of the recipients were most grateful and shared their many needs.

Thank you to everyone who helped pack and deliver Christmas baskets

Food Pantry - January is one of the months that Honey Creek collects food for the Pantry. There was some food donated for the Christmas baskets that was not needed so that will be delivered to the Pantry, but no doubt more will be needed. Recently, the Pantry broke their record for serving people in one day.

HIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Christian Nurture Committee

January 2014 will begin the changes in Session committee structure set up through the recent by-laws changes. The Christian Nurture Committee is the combination of the Worship and Christian Education Committees.

The first event for the committee will be the worship service on January 5th. At that time the two newly elected elders will be ordained and installed. It has been a few years since we at Honey Creek PC have had both an ordination and installation and it promises to be a joyous occasion. We are excited to have Andrew Picek and John Huston as Session members. Don Perkins is pleased to have more men on the board!

We invite you to attend the January 5th service to participate in this special time in the life of our church. As is customary for the first service of the New Year, communion will also be celebrated. Please join us!

Ann Peters, Chairperson

Haiti, anyone?

Shelley is thinking again about the possibilities for a 2014 trip to Haiti. Several people have expressed interest in the Wings of Hope beach trip, which is always the final Thursday of June. There is a Haiti Mission Committee that is a subcommittee of Mission, Outreach, and Membership. Would you like to be part of it? Just let Shelley know, and a meeting will be scheduled soon, so that plans can be made for a possible trip.

Church Directory

A new church directory will be prepared this month. If you have not turned in your contact information, please do so by January 7th. Forms are in the Narthex at church, or you can email it directly to the church office.

Sunday Refreshments

For many years now, the refreshments after worship on Sundays have been covered by the people on the five session committees and Presbyterian Women, each taking 2 months of the year. As of January 1st, we will have only three session committees, and we want to offer those who do not serve on committees or are not in PW but who would like to bring the refreshments occasionally that opportunity. So we’ve set up a new system. The three committees and PW will each be responsible for 3 months, but only the first three Sundays of the month. For the 4th and occasional 5th Sundays there will be a sign-up sheet, and we invite you to consider signing up to bring the refreshments. The other issue related to this is just how much and what to bring! A couple of times we’ve tried to get the refreshments back to something simple such as only cookies and nuts, or only a cheese ball and one sweet thing. Then something bigger happens, and before long, we are back to the beautiful and delicious spreads that have become customary. If you hesitate to serve on a committee because you don’t want to have to fill a big refreshment table, please know that simple is fine! The most important part of this time is the fellowship…the treats are just that, a treat! Look for the sign-up sheet sometime in mid-January, and please, stay after worship and visit!

2014 Session Stated Meeting Schedule

Another change to the session with our new structure is the reduction in the number of meetings. The stated meetings for this new year are January 15, March 19, May 21, August 20, September 17 and November 19.
