Transcript of The history of the internet
Digital
Smoke
Tim Elleston – Murdoch University
What does
Digital Media mean?
Text, audio, graphics and video transferred over the internet
But at it’s heart
It’s a form of
communication
And we’ve been doing that
For the last
200,000years
It all started with
Grunts
And then
symbols came along
30,000 BC
Cave paintings
10,000 BC
Petroglyphs
Writing7,000 years ago
First alphabet
4,000 years ago in Egypt
None of that really helped
Over long distances
Or create some smoke signals
2400 BCin Egypt
And then nothing really changed until…
Telegraph in 1830
And that’s where it all started to getin
tere
sting

Gail Davis downloaded the
10 billionthapp from Apple
After conducting
an extensive study
the size of the internet is…
Freakin’
255 million
websites
152 million are blogs
21.4 million came online in 2010
2 billionpeople are online
Last year
107 Trillion emails were sent

100 million new Twitter accounts
2 billion videos are watched daily on YouTube
Every minute,
35 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube
& 3,000images are uploaded to Flickr
Which now holds over 5 billion images
Pales in comparison to Facebook

55minutes per day
on Facebook

So over the last couple of years
we’ve seen a massive increase
In
Social Media and
Mobileusage
We’re no longer tied to our
screens
We now have a prolific range of devices
Consume
Interact
And distribute content
To literally millions of people
Any timeAny placeAny where
But rememberthis…
It’s still about your
audience
It’s still about
communication
And that’s something
we’ve been doing
For the last
200,000 years
Only now, we’ve got
Digital Smoke Signals
