VAHEGURU

The ‘B’ word….

Over the next few lessons with Maharaj’s Kirpa we will learn about how and why Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is SO much more than a ‘Book’

(Oxford Dictionary Definition of a Book: a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers)

In one word describe what SGGSJ contains?

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is not just for Sikhs, it contains the gem, gift and grace that is TRUTH! It is the perfect Guru as there is nothing higher than truth.

It is a gift for Humanity- EVERYONE.

“Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the Living, awake Sri Guru Nanak Sahib who talks.” Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj

For a man with ‘I’ ego, Sri Guru Granth Sahib is only a Book. For a truth seeker, it is the Satguru in another of his form. For an Enlightened Soul, Sri Guru Granth Sahib is‘Jeonda, Jaagda, Bolda Guru Nanak’– The Living Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Himself.

(Baba Narinder Singh Ji)

Why do some people still use the ‘B’ word?

Ignorance Lack of understanding Lack of faith and belief Secularisation and belief in ‘Science’ Lack of education EGO!!!

Challenge Question: What can be done to stop the use of the ‘B’ word?

Education Write letters where school textbooks etc use the B word Listen to katha/kirtan Santhiya

Above all WE need to understand and feel Maharaj before we can express that belief,

love and faith to others. Be a beacon of light and billboard for Sikhi.

Where did Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee Maharaj come from?

What is this, where did it come from and what does it mean?

This is the truth Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee Maharaj brought us straight from Vaheguru!

The whole of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee consistently focuses on the truth, beauty, love and grace that is VAHEGURU.

Do you know how Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee did his Lavaan?

Ans: Around the Mool Mantar -‘Ek Ong Kar’!

What does this tell us about Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee Maharaj?

Planting the seed and letting it flourishSri Guru Nanak Dev Jee brought the "Word of God" to manifest upon Earth. Through his Hymns and Prayers (Shabads), he inspired and uplifted humankind to live a life of truth, righteousness and spirituality.

Sri Guru Angad Dev Jee, Guru Amar Das and Guru Ram Das all composed Shabads (hymns), and the Sikhs began to collect these in Pothis.

Chanting these Shabads, the Sikhs became vehicles for the vibrations of the "Word of God", and they achieved a state of higher consciousness, a transcendent meditative union with God and Guru.

Who and what is this painting of?

Baba Buddha Jee

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee

Sri Harmandir Sahib Jee

First Prakash

Having compiled the Granth, the Guru placed it in the newly-built Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. The first prakash (opening ceremony) was performed in Sri Darbar Sahib by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee on August 3, 1604. The Guru nominated Bhai Budda Jee as the custodian of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee (known as Adi Granth then). At this time, the Guru bowed before the collection, acknowledging the higher authority of the Bani to that personal importance and significance which he possessed as Guru.

After the first prakash, he (the Guru himself!!!) no longer sat at a level above the Granth Sahib, but below it.

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee told his Sikhs that the Adi Granth was the embodiment of the Guru, and should be treated in the same fashion as they respect him. When Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee first completed the Adi Granth, he placed it upon his own bed and slept on the floor.

What is this?

History of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee…

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee was first compiled by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Jee at Amritsar between 1600-1604, Guru Jee narrated the Gurbani and Bhai Gurdas Sahib Jee was the scribe. Guru Sahib had collected the works of the previous Gurus and then added works from other saints and their own utterances of Gurbani.

Gurbani is direct from the Gurus not written by others or written in hindsight.

GURBANI: sacred language based on the power of the sound current. Gur meaning guide or enlightener. Bani meaning word.

The Pyaar Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee showered….

The words of Sri Guru Granth Sahib were written without any spaces or breaks, which nowadays is hard for most people to follow.

The Guru also instituted daily public worship at the Gurdwara where the Granth was recited all day along to the accompaniment of stringed musical instruments (Kirtan). We can have darshan of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee everyday- how lucky are we? Next lesson we will look at what Kirtan is more closely.
