(photo left).

Jessica took up offi ce on Tuesday

16 October when she signed a pledge with Mansfi eld District Council’s Managing Director Ruth Marlow (photo right). Jessica, who takes up the post as an unopposed candidate, will be supported by a Youth Ambassador Lucy Fretwell (16) of Samworth Church Academy, who will also sign the pledge. Jessica and Lucy will represent young people in the District and take their voice to the Mayor, Members and Offi cers of the Council and other community organisations. They will act as ambassadors for Mansfi eld at various

conferences and as role models for their peers across the District. Jessica said: “I decided to run for Youth Mayor because as I have grown up in Mansfi eld there are things that I’d like to change to benefi t my generation. I will work very hard to succeed in every challenge put in my path and to try to get as much done as possible in the short time I have.”Jessica plans to focus on increasing work experience opportunities for young people aged 14-18. She also hopes to work with businesses to run master classes to help young people write CVs and apply for jobs and to support students to apply their business studies qualifi cations to real-life situations. Jessica is also keen to encourage older students and business leaders to mentor younger students. Her other priorities

include supporting our local troops by promoting the Cadets, developing the idea of a youth bar in Mansfi eld, working

with schools to improve sex education and drug awareness, and promoting youth clubs. Youth Ambassador Lucy said: “I am here to support Jessica in any way that I can and as a post-16 student I feel I have both the personal experience and views to help with the Youth Mayor’s manifesto.”This is the 5th year that Mansfi eld will have a Youth Mayor. Jessica and Lucy take over from the previous Youth Mayor Daniel Winfi eld and Deputy Youth Mayor

Dawn Meade. You can keep up to date with what the Youth Mayor and Youth Ambassador are doing on their Facebook page - just search for "Mansfi eld Youth Mayor".

The Duke of York visits College Construction AcademyThe Duke of York, KG, has visited West Nottinghamshire College’s Construction and Logistics Skills Academy as part of his on-going effort to recognise and promote excellence in technical education and apprenticeships across the UK.His Royal Highness took part in a round-table discussion with college principal Asha Khemka OBE, employers and business leaders on the subject of re-engaging and creating jobs for young people.

As part of this discussion Sir John Peace, Lord Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire, provided an update on the progress of Working for Youth – the employer-led

effort to tackle youth unemployment. The Duke of York was then given a tour of the £7.2 construction academy in Kirkby-in-Ashfi eld by Mrs Khemka, meeting staff, students, apprentices and employer links during the visit

In a speech after the tour, His Royal Highness said: “The purpose of an institution like this is to bring together work, training, business and life skills. “It is only right that an organisation like this should be here to enable you to make the most of whatever skills, whatever learning, you have. So I would like to congratulate Asha on what is going on here and encourage staff to continue with the outstanding work they are providing to young people here at West Nottinghamshire College. “I’d like to wish the young people who are currently studying here every success in their chosen path. Just remember, you have every opportunity to achieve greatness.”Mrs Khemka said: “It was an honour to

show His Royal Highness how we’re developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople through high-quality vocational training and forging strong links with employers.”The construction and logistics skills academy provides training to over

1,300 students on a wide range of vocational courses including bricklaying, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, plastering, painting and decorating, gas-fi tting and rail engineering.Boasting extensive workshop space and the latest industry-approved machinery and equipment, it has forged a

reputation as one of the sector’s leading construction training centres.

Samworth Church Academy students are Guard of Honour at Leicester Tigers v Harlequins matchSixteen proud students from Samworth Church Academy in Mansfi eld were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to be Guard of Honour with their Rugby heroes on Saturday 22nd September. The match between Leicester Tigers and the Harlequins was the fi rst time the teams had met since the Aviva Premiership Final in May and the lucky students were aware of what a

big event they were to witness. Tom Gregory, one of the lucky students who attended said, “On Saturday the 22nd September we went on a rugby trip to the Leicester Tigers home ground at Welford Road to watch them play against the current Aviva premiership champions – Harlequins. We got to walk out onto the pitch and be Guards of Honour at the very start of the game. It was an amazing day standing next to world class players like Toby Flood and Nick Easter and seeing how they play and what it requires to be an elite athlete at the very top level of rugby. I hope we get a chance to do it again!”

Spreading cheer across the communityStudents from West Nottinghamshire College have been creating happiness in the form of artwork on World Smile Day.To recognise World Smile Day on Friday (5 October) over 50 students from childcare, foundation studies and the BAY6 centre created colourful collages as part of a volunteering project, with the theme of ‘seasons’ in mind. The project was set by Mansfi eld charity – APTCOO (A Place To Call Our Own), to brighten up the walls of the centre throughout the year. The centre, based on Botany Avenue in Mansfi eld, provides support for disabled children and their families and students from the college often use its services.

College learner coach James Levy said: “We wanted to make our students aware of this worthwhile charity and offer them a volunteering project with a difference. Also, we wanted to create images that would make people smile, which ties in well with World Smile Day.“We contacted APTCOO to ask what they would like the artwork to be themed on and chief executive Carol Burkitt suggested the four seasons, so there would be something cheerful all year round on the walls.“The collages and paintings that our students have worked on are absolutely brilliant and we’re looking forward to delivering these to the charity next week.”photo: A selection of the artwork displayed by students on the CACHE Level 2 Certifi cate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce

Robin Grover, Vice Principal at Samworth Church Academy said the match day was a great inspiration to the students taking part. “The students were very excited to be the Guard of Honour at this very important match. The Tigers and Harlequins are inspirational teams and the students relished the opportunity to help kick off the match and watch the skill and commitment of the sportsmen taking part. I would also like to say how proud I am at the decorum our students showed and hope that the day will inspire everyone that took part in the event.”The students used the event to raise money to help towards

their rugby and netball tours against Gordonstoun School and The Highland Rugby Club in Scotland which they play each year. Students at the Academy had already raised in the region of a £1000 by doing a 24 hour sports marathon earlier this month. The match ended Leicester Tigers 9- 22 Harlequins.Photograph: Tom Gregory, Samworth Church Academy student.

luxury, opulence and old-fashioned hollywood glamourGet ready to stun in this year’s gorgeous new evening wear trends

Christmas party time is fi nally upon us and it’s time to look for that perfect new dress. Evening wear is soaring in popularity, heavily infl uenced by celebrity red carpet looks and fi lm blockbusters. Keira Knightley’s luxurious style in the Russian epic, Anna Karenina, and the opulent 1920’s America in Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby, have fi rmly thrust evening wear into the spotlight.

With all of this buzz around period costumery, ladies should not be afraid of a little embellishment. Dresses adorned with sequins and jewels, like this claret one from Angela Jane (the Rainworth based evening and bridal wear specialist) ooze glamour and old-

fashioned Hollywood charm.

So opulence and embellishment are in, but what about shape? The waist has taken centre stage on the catwalk this season, emphasising hourglass curves and tailored lines. Gowns that draw attention to the waist

are sophisticated and stylish.

Ruching, or gathering, is popular on the red carpets and was sported by Octavia Spencer (The Help) at the 2012 Oscars and Golden Globes. Ruching on the bust teamed with an empire line waist is perfect for disguising the tummy, while giving the illusion of a cinched waist. The empire waistline of this midnight blue

dress from Angela Jane beautifully defi nes the feminine silhouette.

As for colours, jewel tones have been a big hit on the red carpet this year. Emma Stone (The Amazing Spiderman) impressed in a deep ruby gown at the 2012 Golden Globes, while Sofi a Vergara (Modern Family) and Berenice Bejo (The Artist) stunned

If you really want to go for the nineteenth century Russian look of Anna Karenina, add a fur stole

and strings of pearls to your ensemble. But if it’s the luxury of 1920s America that you love, try a jewel encrusted clutch, elbow length gloves and a bejewelled headband - the

perfect accessories for opulent style.

Countdown to ChristmasCountdown to ChristmasCountdown to ChristmasCountdown to ChristmasCountdown to ChristmasA Hidden Treasure Unveiled –The Mansfield Manor Restaurant and Hotel

The impressive grade II Georgian

building started life as home to the Stanton family who had it built in 1803. They owned and ran the mills at the bottom of Bath Lane which are still in commercial use today. The fi fteen acre Carr Bank Park was the garden to the house, with the stable block behind, and on Windmill Lane. The area which is now the Hotel car park was once the vegetable garden for the hotel kitchens.

From the Stanton family the property passed into the ownership of the Duke of Portland who's estate retained it until it was converted into Council Offi ces and an Art School in 1921. It remained in Mansfi eld District Council's hands until it was sold off

into private ownership in 1988, since that time, the building has been a hotel, owned by the same family and has had a few ups and downs over the years. In May of this year, it was bought by Paul Andrews and Diane Doran, two property developers from Derbyshire.

Their intention is to make the hotel one of the premier venues in the East Midlands. They have been fortunate to

secure a Chef of very high renown having worked with Marcus Warring and Gordon Ramsey at Petrus in London. The fi ne dining restaurant offers affordable dishes in very elegant surroundings.

The wine list is exclusive to Nottinghamshire, with the supplier

having a Royal Warrant to the Queen.

As a wedding venue, the management pride themselves in being really

individualistic, giving clients the opportunity to have the

bespoke wedding that they envisage. The hotel is licensed for Civil Ceremonies, and can cater form 8 -70 Wedding Breakfast guests and 200 for the after wedding party. All the food is prepared in-house and the hotel has just attained a fi ve star food hygiene rating, refl ecting the high standard.

Countdown to ChristmasCountdown to ChristmasCountdown to ChristmasCountdown to ChristmasCountdown to Christmas

I am Marcus Kilvington and I am the owner of Food Profi ts. What we do

at Food Profi ts is teach catering food businesses how to get more customers in the door.

This week I was asked to go and sample the food at the beautiful, elegant and prestigious, Manor Restaurant and Hotel in Mansfi eld.

I was greeted by the owner Paul and Shof the head chef. These two gentlemen have a passion to provide some of the most outstanding food in the east midlands.

They also have customer service excellence running through their blood, wanting to give every customer that eats at The Manor, the very best experience they can have.

Upon sitting down, we were given a selection of hand baked breads, my favourite being the sultana and walnut, closely followed by the thyme and sage.

Following on from this for starters, we were treated to seared tuna with a mango salsa, having just a hint of chilli to give it a delicate “bite”... delicious! (photo below)

Next we were surprised with an “Amuse-bouche” of salmon mousse with a homemade tartare sauce, a smooth rounded fl avour with light texture.

Next came the main course, lamb chops cooked beautifully on a bed of cabbage, accompanied by a creamy mash. It was superb, with the highlight to top it off for me being a rich lamb mint jus. Lamb is one of my favourite meats, a pure delight to eat.

This is fi ne dining at its best.

I am now feeling quite full but still manage

to save some room for dessert.

This was one of Shof’s favourite homemade creations, a coconut crème brulee with a ginger ice-cream. What an ice-cream, fabulous!

This talented young man loves conjuring up his desserts, you can see the passion on his face when he talks to me about them, in the video we made while we were there, Go to this link to watch it http://www.marketingrestaurant.co.uk/the-fi nest-of-fi ne-dining

Now I am really fussy when it comes to food quality, because to quote Heston Blumenthal if I may “You can’t make GREAT food without GREAT ingredients”

Shof and Paul are totally committed to great food quality and wherever possible source all their ingredients locally, from the meats to the freshest of fruit and veg.

What I also found out to be fantastic, is Paul who owns The Manor wants to be the very best. He wants his customers to feel special, cared for and important, it means a lot to him and Shof.

Our mantra at Food Profi ts is “Be the Very Best You Can Be” and Paul and Shof certainly portray this.

Whilst at the Manor Restaurant I made a 3 minute video with Shof the head chef, it shows you how much he wants to give his customers a great experience.

Go to this link to watch it http://www.marketingrestaurant.co.uk/the-fi nest-of-fi ne-dining For the Finest of Fine Dining, a trip to The Manor is imperative.

Excellent Wines with a Royal Warrant

An invitation to join Marcus and sample wines supplied exclusively to The Mansfi eld Manor Hotel

and Restaurant by a Company with a Royal Warrant to the Queen couldn’t be refused. Nowhere else in Nottinghamshire serve these wines currently, so this was a particularly exciting proposition!

Il Carretto IGT Bianco di Sicilia 2011 - an Italian dry and fruity wine was served upon arrival as an appetising aperitif. This house wine is offered to guests at a fabulous price of £14.95. To accompany the seared tuna, the sommelier presented us with a delicious Petite Gasconne Blanc Producteurs Plaimont IGP Cotes de Gascogne 2011 - off dry, light bodied and zesty and superb value at £15.95.

Moving to our delicious main course, the lamb was accompanied by a choice of three red wines for me to taste — “Oh the pleasures of this role” ! ..Again, another house wine, the Il Carretto IGT Rosso di Puglia 2010 was kind to the palate whilst bursting with ripe cherry fl avour and could be enjoyed with a meal or simply with friends whilst relaxing at the bar. Fabulously priced per bottle at £14.95. To enhance the meal a full bodied El Campesino Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere 2011 was served. A fruity wine ‘teeming with red berries and kissed with spice’ and again great value at £19.99.

However, the meal

fi nished with the wine of all splendours, a wonderful Belezos Bodegas Zugober Rioja Crianza 2008-with fresh balancing acidity and ripe tannin structure. Priced at £26.95......this wine is supplied to Michelin restaurants in the South of England.

This supple but elegant wine brought the evening to a close and I was left with memories of not only fabulous hosting, excellent service, wonderful food and delicious wine but thoughts of my recent visit to Seville. Oh those hot dusky evenings relaxing in tavernas overlooking beautiful orange tree gardens.

Thank you to Paul and Diane - Owners, Connor; Bar Manager and Licensee and of course Shofqul for the invitation.

I will be certainly be paying them a visit again soon and so should you.

Are you an online trader?Earlier this year HMRC offered people who are trading on the internet who haven’t paid all the tax they owe the opportunity to come forward and pay up. “So what?” you may say; but this was not aimed at the companies like Amazon and eBay: it was aimed at their customers – you and me.

This time limited window of opportunity has now passed, but many people do not perhaps recognise that they are in fact online traders. Many such people will regard themselves as hobbyists rather than traders; but HMRC know different!

Selling items that you own through online websites such as eBay and Amazon is a popular way of realising cash from old and unwanted items, and at that basic level all is well. However, when you acquire items with a view to selling them online, that is trading and from a tax standpoint is no different from setting up a market stall in the middle of town. This is the kind of online trader that HMRC are targeting: this may very well be you, your parents or your children!

Information technology available to HMRC makes the process of identifying such people very easy, and the process of gathering the evidence of trading equally straight forward. So be warned. When you complete your next Tax Return and you sign the declaration to say that the information “...is correct and complete to the best of my knowledge” take a moment to think about whether you too are an online trader.

Hall-Fast Is Best In Business Hall-Fast Industrial Supplies Ltd has been crowned Business of the Year at the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce’s (DNCC) 2012 Nottinghamshire Business Awards. Malcolm Hall, Managing Director of the Mansfield-based firm, collected the trophy at a gala black tie dinner at the Belfry Hotel in Nottingham on Friday. The awards are organised jointly by the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce (DNCC) and Insider Media Ltd and supported by a host of local sponsors and partner organisations.

Mr Hall started up the company from his bedroom with just £5,000 in 2006 and since then, has seen it grow its turnover to £3m-a-year. It currently exports more than 48,000 product lines to 75 different countries. He has already won a clutch of awards, including Midlands Exporter of the Year in 2012 and the Chamber’s Notts Entrepreneur of the Year title in 2011.

He said: “I am really pleased to have won this title. For me, entering awards isn't about the personal glorification, it’s about the credibility that can be gained to the benefit of the company and the local community. Over the last three years, Hall-Fast has won nine awards and this has helped to raise our profile and win work which previously we might not have been considered.

“We now export to over 75 countries and I think our international and local customers get a tremendous sense of comfort knowing they are dealing with a company that has been recognised locally, regionally and nationally. I am passionate about giving something back to the community so Hall-Fast does a lot to raise money for local charities and to support local community initiatives. This kind of profile makes the fund raising process much easier."

Congratulations to Hall Fast from The High Life – another reason to ‘Stand Proud’ of our local businesses. Diane Carter Editor

“They are the oldest established jewellers in Mansfield, offering a friendly, personal, highly experienced professional service rarely available elsewhere. They sell better quality items than many jewellers, including the more distinctive pieces such as Pandora, backed by an after sales service second to none. Celebrating 100 years in business is quite a success in today’s age. To celebrate 200 years in business in Mansfield is a minor miracle and Martin Wilkinson Jewellers have every right to be justly proud of this achievement. They have been based in four locations in Mansfield during this time, before moving to their current premises on Queen Street in 1974. Interestingly, during the 2nd World War they serviced bomber command wrist watches, essential for accurate bombing raids over Germany, becoming the second highest rated workshop in the country. Teenage Girls set to pay 94% more for their Car Insurance in December?

If your teenage daughter is just about to learn to drive, from December their Insurer will no longer be able to offer them a cheaper insurance price based on them being female.

This is because of a ruling in the European Court of Justice last year, when it was decided that a person’s gender could no longer be used to calculate an insurance premium.

Insurance companies have always discounted female premiums as young male drivers were statistically more likely to have accidents but this will no longer be the case. It is thought that male drivers may get around 10% discount on their premiums but women are going to be the losers in this ruling, with projected rises by an Aggregator of up to a shocking 94%.

“Small ‘starter’ cars are in a lot of cases much cheaper to buy than the fi rst insurance policy”,

says Jennifer “but this ruling isn’t going to just affect car insurance, which rises anticipated in both life/health insurance and pensions premiums.”

“With no easy solution, we advise concerned parents to put the insurance policy in the child’s name to earn No Claims Bonus a.s.a.p. Telematics can also be considered where the Insurer fi ts a ‘black box’ to your car which monitors your driving hours and style in return for lower insurance premiums” .

Mastering Social MediaWhen it comes to Social Media, the 2 most common questions that business owners ask are:1. How should I use social media to market my business2. How do I make money from using social mediaThere are some key factors to understand in order to do justice in answering those golden questions. As it’s often said, we should start with the end in mind and at the end of this article you can download a simple to use guide which answers these questions and more. The key to social media is to engage with your target market through conversation and build genuine sincere relationships before trying to sell. As it says on the tin, be social! In fact I will go as far as to say that when you fully understand this principle and focus on the relationship instead of the sale, you won’t

have to sell ever again because people will want to buy what you have to offer if it’s relevant and they see the value. Many of you will fi nd this extremely refreshing from traditional push-marketing methods that have been employed over recent years.I’ve created a guide that you can download called ‘Designing YOUR social media strategy’ This will provide you with what you need to know and how to get it done. Inside the guide is a further download to help you even more so go here NOW to download your copyhttp://www.carlkilvington.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Designing-YOUR-Social-Media-STRATEGY.pdfTo your success!CarlFor more tips, go to www.carlkilvington.com

Di Leisure BlogWhat a beautiful weekend and it is great that we are fi nally enjoying some long term sunshine even though there is a nip in the air. Never mind a great excuse to buy some new boots, and I have already hit the shops and grabbed a fabulous pair of leopard skin high heeled stunners. Plus I love the fake fur and leather coats on the high street so anyone knows any hidden treasures please let me know. The weekend started with a little visit to The Beauty Spot Cosmetic Clinic, Woodhouse Road, Mansfi eld, where I experienced my fi rst eyelash and eye brow tint. Fabulous friendly service by beauty therapist; Michelle and great value at only £10 and I have been ‘fl uttering my eyelashes’ all weekend. I will certainly be popping back for one of their £15 spray tans prior to any Christmas partying. For those of you following my heartbreak story since my son Scott left home, time is healing and I actually managed to stay in his room for half an hour on Sunday to give it a much needed vacuum. Just

how much loose change can a kid leave under their bed? Prior to this one step in and a torrent of tears would fl ow but I am gradually getting used to it and it is actually quite nice being able to treat myself to some healthier food over the weekend instead of teenage crisps, pizza and coke. Well Stoptober for me has been slightly different. I appreciate it is for smokers but I decided to give up drinking wine at home. Two reasons; one to save money – we have to make sacrifi ces these days and two; I admit I was probably getting into the habit of 2 big glasses a night? The effect- yes, more money for other things such as my trip to Jesus Christ Superstar on Saturday and two; enjoying the fl avour of the wine more when I drink out occasionally with friends in the pub or out having a nice meal. Yes it does taste better when it is a ‘treat’.So looking forward to the week ahead as magazine deadlines so with the end of Downton Abbey I shut down the lap top. See you next month.

Christmas: Coping with Festive StressChristmas can be one of the most stressful times of the year. To help you leave the stress behind and enjoy the festive fun here are fi ve tips to get you on your way.1- Plan – Holding an ever growing ‘to do’ list in your head keeps your mind constantly searching to ensure you don’t forget anything! Put aside an hour and write your list, allocate dates to each task and transfer to your diary. Now you can focus on the tinsel and baubles!2- Delegate – If you are feeling as though the success of Christmas is sitting on your shoulders it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Take the heat off by delegating to friends and family, who will be delighted to get involved and take the weight off you.3- Say No – With invitations fl ying in at this time of year, there has never been a better time to refi ne the art of saying “No”. It is tempting to accept too much and feel frazzled by mid December, this year be clear about how many parties you will attend and be selective.4- Let perfectionism go – People are

Car Review: The Suzuki Swift SZ4 a Superb little SprinterIn the absence of Sir Christopher Stirling, who normally presents our car reviews, Bristol Street Motors kindley allowed me to step into his shoes with a delicious and delightful Suzuki Swift SZ4.What impressed me initially about the Swift was the fun chunky styling. The actual spec I was offered was a Suzuki Swift SZ4 in a delightful fresh white with a black interior. Oh the treats of this job! Simple to step into and drive, I immediately took off for a nice spin around the local area.On a nip in and out of town note the Suzuki was a lovely little ‘winger’ surprising people from behind whilst slowing down for traffi c lights and quickly gaining speed to wave goodbye. Uphill was never a problem and it seemed to have the pace of a long distance runner, saving a little for the last few metres to the top. This caused a few grunts from a gentleman in a large 4 x 4 who decided he was defi nitely going to pass this little sprinter even at 38 miles per hour and almost skidded in his ego built beast? Another delight is the view from the driving seat offering confi dent manoeuvring and parking. Ideal for the city lady who has to pop to the bank or visit local businesses, (Oh that sounds rather like me)? Noting one review* from a local newspaper

describing the Suzuki as a ‘pocket rocket’ I can only confi rm this parallel and in agreement with the writer, the Suzuki raised my adrenalin levels too when I did decide to put it through its paces!Testing its high speed and control on the A617 from Sutton to Mansfi eld, a fabulous drive, easy to handle and slickly smooth. Maybe a simple description but the Suzuki is so easy to drive you don’t notice you are driving it? No hard stop brakes, worries about massive speed reductions every time you go round a little bend or constant gear changing. Again the review on the www.suzuki4.co.uk website states “the Suzuki creates an exhilarating drive with no compromise on power and performance” and I can certainly clarify that. Wow and Whoomph are the best descriptions! So we know the Suzuki Swift Sport has style, speed and defi nitely status with lots of admiring glances, however what about the really vital issues for our lady readers? We have our style to consider too and testing the ‘climbing in and out’ of the vehicle, no worries here ladies your ‘Apprentice’ style shift dress will remain intact with quite high up seating and plenty of internal space. Other internal stylish benefi ts include blue tooth, MP3 compatibility, automatic air conditioning, cruise control and plenty of room for your lap top. Basically you can have an offi ce on the road.

Being a sports person myself, an ex netball wing attack and current long distance runner I felt very quickly at one with this dual exhaust vehicle high powered car. I loved the fun element and styling of it and most of all being a Leo loved the fact that you ‘stand out in a crowd’. Don’t buy this car to hide in a corner!

YOUR FAMILY SHOULD INHERIT YOUR ESTATE – NOT PROBLEMS

Most of us don’t want to think about dying and so it is perhaps no surprise to learn that in a survey

conducted by the Offi ce of Fair Trading in February 2010, one in three people said that they did not have a Will. We all know how easy it is to defer this crucial decision by thinking it can always wait for another day, but delay can prove to be costly. In recent years several celebrities have passed without the appropriate provisions in place, including the author of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”.

We will all die having left a direction as to whom our assets will be passed. What type of direction you leave will of course depend on whether you have chosen to write a Will, or whether you have left this task to the State under what are called the rules of intestacy. If this is the case then the State will determine how your estate is divided up, which is unlikely to match your intentions.

Making a Will is crucial for anyone wanting to protect their family from unnecessary anxiety and expense after they die. Only with a valid Will can you be certain that your estate will go to the right people. If you do not draw up a proper Will, you run the risk of depriving your spouse or partner of their home, increasing the inheritance tax (IHT) burden and leaving parts of your estate in the wrong hands. Indeed, one of the most common misconceptions is that if you do not have a Will, your nearest and dearest will decide how your assets are split. Sadly, this is not the case.

Not leaving a Will can also mean extensive legal costs for your benefi ciaries; failing

to provide for a partner or dependant will mean they will have to consult a lawyer to contest the State's decisions, with no guaranteed result. Complex cases can require a genealogy expert, at great cost, to clarify relatives' rights to your estate.

It is particularly important for unmarried couples to draft a Will - an unmarried person will receive nothing if their partner dies intestate, regardless of how long they have lived together or whether they have children. There was a time when you couldn’t go past a bus shelter or stand on a railway station platform without seeing a

poster for The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, written by the late Stieg Larsson. But the Swedish author did not leave a Will and when he died his estate went to his father, rather than his partner of thirty years. (Source: www.guardian.co.uk November 2009)

The complexity surrounding Wills does not stop there. There is an old saying in the legal profession: "Where there is a Will there is an argument; or better still,

litigation''. However this does not mean that there is no point in making a Will; it simply refers to the fact that too many Wills contain elementary mistakes. These mistakes may mean disgruntled relatives can challenge the Will after your death, helping generate more work - and fees - for the legal profession, so seeking advice from a lawyer, who is an experienced practitioner, is, in the fi rst instance, always

the most sensible approach.

Many people opt for a so-called do-it-yourself Will, which can cost as little as £10 from your local supermarket. But,

perhaps not surprisingly, many people who opt for the DIY route make basic errors. Something as simple as naming someone in their Will by a shortened name, may create later problems when the Will does not match the name that appears on their birth certifi cate. Such errors can be costly both fi nancially and emotionally.

Arranging a Will which specifi cally sets out your wishes, will give you the

certainty that your assets will be passed to your intended recipients.

Some people may also want to specify their funeral arrangements

to refl ect their wishes and to take into account religious beliefs.

Seeking specialist legal advice when arranging your Will, is one, if not the most important aspects of estate planning.

New addition to Water Meadows' "wall of fame"The magical moment local swimming sensations Ollie Hynd and Charlotte Henshaw realised their Paralympic dream will be on display at the pool where they both put in the hours of training needed to be the best in the world.

Mansfi eld District Council, which spotted and nurtured Ollie and Charlotte's talents from an early age through its swimming

development programme, is set to unveil two giant pictures of the duo at the Water Meadows Swimming Complex.

The three metre high photographs will be positioned at poolside, one showing Ollie with

his gold medal after winning the SM8 200m individual medley in London and the other picturing Charlotte on the podium after claiming silver in the SB6 100m Breaststroke.

Ollie also won silver in the S8 Men's 400m Freestyle and bronze in the S8 100m Backstroke.

Executive Mayor Tony Egginton will unveil the photos. He said: "The poolside at Water Meadows is quickly becoming a wall of fame, as the photos of Ollie and Charlotte will join the one of Sam that we placed poolside following his tremendous success at the Beijing 2008 Games.

"As well as providing a tribute to our Paralympic swimmers' incredible achievements, we hope the picture will serve as an inspiration to all our other elite young swimmers."

Pink Ladies at Lunch for Breakthrough Breast Cancer What a fabulous time the It’s Women’s Business Club ladies had at the October lunch at the Oakham Suite, Mansfi eld. This month’s meeting was a fundraising event on behalf of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a charity very close to the heart of many of our members.

Almost £200 was raised through a raffl e, auction and treasure trove map. Many thanks to Shof Choudhury, Head Chef at the newly refurbished Mansfi eld Manor Hotel who came along to do some serious Pink ‘Mocktail’ Shaking.

Thank you to all the attendees who were so generous on the day. Visit www.itswomensbusiness.co.uk or call Diane: Chair on 07916 245 367 for more details and how to join.

Film Review: Amour (Released 16th November)

Cinema feeds on stories of love and death, but how often do filmmakers really offer new or challenging perspectives on either? Michael Haneke’s ‘Amour’ is devastatingly original and unflinching in the way it examines the effect of love on death, and vice versa. It’s a staggering, intensely moving look at old age and life’s end, which at its heart offers two performances of incredible skill and wisdom from French veteransJean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.An intimate, brave and devastating portrait of an elderly Parisian couple, Anne (Riva) and Georges (Trintignant), facing up to a sudden turning point in their lives. Haneke erects four walls to keep out the rest of the world, containing his drama almost entirely within one apartment over a period of some weeks and months. This is a film about loyalty and being true to your word right to the very end. ‘Amour’ is a devastating, highly intelligent and astonishingly performed work. It’s a masterpiece.

Book Review: Standing in Another Man’s GraveIan RankinRelease date: 8th NovIt’s twenty-five years since John Rebus appeared on the scene, and five years since he retired. But 2012 sees his return in STANDING IN ANOTHER MAN’S GRAVE. Not only is Rebus as stubborn and anarchic as ever, but he finds himself in trouble with Rankin’s latest creation, Malcolm Fox of Edinburgh’s internal affairs unit. Added to which, Rebus may be about to derail the career of his ex-colleague Siobhan Clarke, while himself being permanently derailed by mob boss and old adversary Big Ger Cafferty. But all Rebus wants to do is discover the truth about a series of seemingly unconnected disappearances stretching back to the millennium. The problem being, no one else wants to go there - and that includes Rebus’s fellow officers. Not that any of that is going to stop Rebus. Not even when his own life and the careers of those around him are on the line.

Jean’s brightening futures as a foster carer

JEAN Tarr was 54 when she decided to become a foster carer. “I was really sure it was something I wanted to do,” she said, “and two years down the line I don’t regret a thing.”

The mum-of-two, from New Whittington, Chesterfield, was keen from the start to enter into long term foster care and knew as soon as she met Polly* she knew she’d found the right child . “I wanted to really make a difference to her life,” she said. “Of course it hasn’t all been plain sailing but the support and guidance Team Fostering gives you is just superb.

“Foster children have often had a rough time of it and you need to understand that their behaviour may reflect that.

“What they need is security, routine and boundaries – because they may never have known that – and you need to be patient and stick to your guns. They need to know that if you say no you mean no.

* Not her real name.

“But it’s a two way thing and everything you give your foster child is returned to you a dozen times over.

“Fostering Polly has given us such a sense of achievement. We went to a meeting with her school teachers the other day and I was so proud I was nearly in tears.

“I would like to say to anyone thinking of fostering to just go ahead and do it. I’ve enjoyed this so much I wish I’d done it years ago.”

“I really love Polly – as much as I love my own children. Fostering her has been such an adventure and I would urge anyone who really wants to do it to get in touch withTeam Fostering.

“There is a child out there who needs you.”

In line with the October photo of an ‘Orb’ (see right) we received this short story from a Blidworth resident; Arthur Radford in regard to the other smaller orb seen in the photo?

A Letter to PostThis evening I must write what has entered my heart, something that is heavier than any iron could be. A fool and his mind is that of Arthur Radford, some eighty years old with a head full of history. No invention here. The eye has never lied, though the lips have sometimes twisted the words they have spoken. They are now part of the iron, set in my chest. No rust will ever decay them for I ask of no forgiveness till I enter the house of the Lord and his angels whose wings I sometimes damaged here on earth. Their names are in His book as they are in my heart. At this moment I’m listening to a brass band playing. Calm sea and prosperous voyage. May I cross the sea by boat to heaven as this music is so beautiful it must have been written there? What has brought on this evening’s sad feelings? I was recalling my poems; The Dumbles, to a friend today and they turned over in my mind. The childhood that I once

knew and I’m living this. This night. I have always said, the Dumbles belong to nature of tree and flower and to bird and insect. A never ending stream of blue sky of sun, to rain and snow, only to be walked by human kind in their young years-then to be walked in their memories so no heavy footsteps spoil the quietness of nature’s valley. What is hurting at the moment is the picture that has been imprinted on my mind these last two years is that of a mother and child interred in the Dumbles though wrongly placed there they cry for help. If only I were a man to speak their cause but shyness holds me back. A failing I have known some eighty years. If anyone reading this story thinks it comes from a twisted mind I forgive them but if in their heart a little iron grows think of all the weight mine carried. For I have seen their eyes look

into mine. The deep sorrow they have for being in the Dumbles. A place for nature. A mother and her child want to be returned to making. To be released to Heaven where their wings await them. Please lend me some of your strength that I may help them from the loneliness that is theirs to free the Dumbles of its commitment that was placed upon it those many years ago – for I know they have been there a long time. Their hearts are light. No iron in theirs. No sins in their eyes just deep sorrow to bury in your heart along with the tears that run down their cheeks. continued on page 31......

POEMREAD OF ME

Close your eyes and see the distance

Close your eyes and see the nearestClimb the stile and walk the path

Touch the tree and stride the streamSee the blooms and smell their sweetness

Hear the sound of bird be singingHear the laughter of children playing

Feel the tears and sigh with joyRest the book of memories past

Reach for pen to write some linesRecord the times of pleasant moments

For in future pages writtenOpen eyes will read your story

And closed eyes will walk the pathOf memories’ lanes with you.

Where do I reveal the secret entrusted to my soul? My tongue dare not speak, though my heart shouts out ‘Help’! As does the mother and child in the prison of the grave where they lie under the moon of coldest earth.Crying now, my pillow damp, my pen rests – its duty done. Who shall I post this letter to that they do not laugh at my rambling?

The iron heart now turns to gold. A reward for singing out. A song so bold from a mother’s lips. A hand held out from a child so young as they rise to take their place in Heaven’s land.Arthur has written a book of poems entitled The Dumbles and within this collection Arthur reveals himself to be something of an iconic fi gure locally and as an

octogenarian, he is something of an inspiration to folks of mature years. He started writing poetry about 5 years ago and is now prolifi c in his writings which now include quirky, amusing little tales, as well as poetry. He speaks in the dialect of this part of the country and with the accent of his local surroundings but with a distinctive and unique voice. He is part of the landscape. In this book he takes the reader on a journey, not only in Dumbles Wood itself, but also through time, the changing seasons and with a spiritual outlook on life itself. Stories and images blend into the poetry giving depth to the descriptions. Visit: http://www.thynkspublications.co.uk/ to purchase The Dumbles at £4.99 and it will also be available on Amazon shortly.
