As we remember Jesus and his disciples sharing in this meal during Holy Week it becomes for us the Last Supper when Jesus gives the bread to his disciples and tells them it is his body which will be broken for them. He thanks God for the wine and shares it with them saying it is his blood making a new agreement between God and humans that sins will be forgiven and we shall be free. It has become a practice at the heart of the Christian church with the sharing of bread (or wafers) and wine at communion and will take a special place in Easter Sunday worship. Then there are food practices around Good Friday the traditional time to eat Hot Cross Buns, now popular all year round, but once only available on Good Friday. The cross is to remind us of the cross on which Jesus died, and was available only on that day because it is a holy day. Good Friday may also be a day of fasting and abstinence for some, the Catholic Church has had a tradition of not eating the flesh of warm blooded animals, originally on Fridays, but more recently limited to Fridays in Lent and particularly Good Friday, which has meant fish has been a popular alternative. This is to honour the sacrifice of Jesus giving his flesh to die for us on the cross. The food theme continues when we get to Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. As a child we often had roast lamb on Easter Sunday, which celebrated the fact that Jesus was the Lamb of God, dead on Good Friday, but now raised to life again. Then there is the Simnel cake which is covered with marzipan and has marzipan balls on the top to represent Jesus and his disciples 12 balls, including Jesus now back with them, but missing out Judas who didn’t live long enough to see the resur- rection. Later on resurrection day Jesus walks the Emmaus Road with two people who recognise him when he breaks bread with them at supper and a week later Jesus cooks a fish breakfast by the lakeside for his disciples who have been fishing. Food, which is so important to life, is threaded through our life of faith. As we indulge again after our Lenten disciplines this Easter let’s take time to reflect on the symbolism of the special food we enjoy. Let’s also offer a prayer for those millions of people with insufficient food to sustain life, particularly in the famine region of East Africa recently on our news. May God have mercy on them. Praying you will hold a meaningful Good Friday and experience Easter joy. Liz

Easter Food

The shops are full of them, I expect many of you have already bought one or more and put them away

in the cupboard waiting for the time to eat them – except of course, the small kind which often just get

eaten as any other sweet. Yes, I mean Easter Eggs – the chocolate kind. The breaking of the chocolate egg

in order to eat it reminds us of Jesus breaking out of the tomb to start his resurrection life – much like a

chicken breaks out of its shell to take on new life. But if we look closer at the traditions of the Christian

faith there are many more traditions concerning food that tell the story of Jesus death and resurrection – the

Easter story. Food seems to be a theme threaded through it all.

It starts with the Passover, which is a meal that reminds the Jewish people of their rescue from Egypt

during Moses’ time. Here there are bitter herbs to remind them of the difficult times, sweet meats to re-

mind them of God’s provision for them, lamb bones to remind them of the protection of the first born to

those who ate it, bread with no yeast in it because they are in a hurry to start a journey to freedom, and

wine with an extra cup and place setting for the one who is to come – their anticipated Messiah, in case he

shows up during the meal. As we remember Jesus and his disciples sharing in this meal during Holy Week

it becomes for us the Last Supper when Jesus gives the bread to his disciples and tells them it is his body

which will be broken for them. He thanks God for the wine and shares it with them saying it is his blood

making a new agreement between God and humans that sins will be forgiven and we shall be free. It has

become a practice at the heart of the Christian church with the sharing of bread (or wafers) and wine at

communion and will take a special place in Easter Sunday worship.

Then there are food practices around Good Friday – the traditional time to eat Hot Cross Buns, now

popular all year round, but once only available on Good Friday. The cross is to remind us of the cross on

which Jesus died, and was available only on that day because it is a holy day. Good Friday may also be a

day of fasting and abstinence for some, the Catholic Church has had a tradition of not eating the flesh of

warm blooded animals, originally on Fridays, but more recently limited to Fridays in Lent and particularly

Good Friday, which has meant fish has been a popular alternative. This is to honour the sacrifice of Jesus

giving his flesh to die for us on the cross.

The food theme continues when we get to Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the

dead. As a child we often had roast lamb on Easter Sunday, which celebrated the fact that Jesus was the

Lamb of God, dead on Good Friday, but now raised to life again. Then there is the Simnel cake which is

covered with marzipan and has marzipan balls on the top to represent Jesus and his disciples – 12 balls,

including Jesus now back with them, but missing out Judas who didn’t live long enough to see the resur-

rection. Later on resurrection day Jesus walks the Emmaus Road with two people who recognise him

when he breaks bread with them at supper and a week later Jesus cooks a fish breakfast by the lakeside for

his disciples who have been fishing.

Food, which is so important to life, is threaded through our life of faith. As we indulge again after our

Lenten disciplines this Easter let’s take time to reflect on the symbolism of the special food we enjoy.

Let’s also offer a prayer for those millions of people with insufficient food to sustain life, particularly in

the famine region of East Africa recently on our news. May God have mercy on them.

Praying you will hold a meaningful Good Friday and experience Easter joy. Liz

Children Society Boxes I've recently completed the annual emptying of all the Children's Society Boxes in Bruntingthorpe, Mowsley and Theddingworth. In Bruntingthorpe 6 folk raised £105.16. In Mowsley 5 folk raised £71.15.In Theddingworth 7 folk raised £98.84Grateful thanks

for all those who who keep a Children's Society box in their homes throughout the year into which they pop spare change (or

notes ) and together have raised the total of £275.15.

Like many charities, The Children's Society struggle to raise enough money to fund their tremendously important work of help-

ing children. Just some of the ways they use the money you have raised is in the work providing safe accommodation for chil-

dren who have run away from home to escape various forms of abuse and who are in danger of being lured into prostitution; they

support children who are the main carers of parents suffering from chronic illness or addiction; they work with children and par-

ents to help restore broken relationships and they support children in care. Needless to say there are always more children in need

of help than money to go around.

If you would like to have a collecting box in your home to put all that heavy change to good use, please do not hesitate to con-

tact me and I can deliver a collecting box to your door and empty it once a year - or before if you fill it up sooner.

Many thanks again, Anne Vincent Children's Society Box Coordinator.Tel: 01858 [email protected]

** IMPORTANT NOTICE** I understand that a new £1 coin is now being brought into circulation. Apparently the old

coins are being replaced , therefore I shall be asking to empty the box twice this year I shall be in touch in due

course

During the last year the Friends of Gilmorton School (FOGS) have raised funds towards all pupils attending the pantomime, the purchase of dictionaries and materials for Christmas crafts. As part of studies during British Science Week, Dr Tracey Dickens, a Space specialist from Leicester Univer-sity will visit the school to host workshops about Space with each class. The school Easter Service will be held on 6th April at 2-30 pm in All Saints Church, Gilmorton.

" Bruntingthorpe Village Hall Supper held on 25th February 2017 Once again we enjoyed a successful Turkey Roast Dinner in the Village Hall. It was good to welcome new villagers and to catch up with our many regulars. The meal was excellent & we wish to thank The Shires for their generous donation of Turkey Crowns & our loyal supporters who contrib-uted a lovely selection of desserts. The evening raised a marvellous £693 - which means we are getting closer to welcoming quotations for the upkeep of our Village Hall Slate Roof. Celebrating Creativity – Mowsley Church is planning to expand the harvest celebrations to not just thanks-

giving to God for the bounty of his creation in our fields, allotments and gardens, but also to celebrating the

creative gifts he has blessed us with. Do you have creative ability in art, music, needlecraft, dance, baking,

writing, flower arranging, craft of any kind? … the list could go on! There will be an event in the church on

the weekend of 23rd and 24th September, to include the harvest service, but also to exhibit and celebrate local

creativity – if you would like to contribute to this or offer help in any way, then do let Liz or the church war-

dens Janet , Erica or Ian and Phyllis know please.

BIBLE STUDY - Read from the Bible John’s gospel chapter 18 verses 33 to 37 : Jesus and Pilate

Jesus has been sent to Pilate who is the Roman Governor of the region which includes Jerusalem. He is known from Roman re-

cords to be a harsh governor, but he seems to have some sympathy for Jesus, perhaps because he has little time for the Jewish su-

preme council who have sent him to be tried by him. The Jews are accusing him of claiming to be king which would bring about the

death penalty under Roman law as no-one can be a king without Caesar’s permission and recognition. So Pilate questions Jesus

about it. Jesus questions who is saying he is a king, and Pilate firmly puts the origin of the idea back with the Jewish authorities.

Jesus never claims to be a king, but does speak about having a kingdom which is not like the kingdoms of the world – he says his

kingdom is from another place, which we would understand to be heaven, so not in competition with humanly governed kingdoms.

Jesus is more interested in the truth about the relationship between heaven and earth, between God and humankind – that, he says, is

why he came into the world – to tell the truth. Pilate is happy with Jesus’ answer although he asks ‘what is truth’. He tries to find a

way to set him free, but caves in fairly easily when challenged, perhaps he didn’t care enough to do more. Pilate seems to recognise

that it is possible for the kingdom Jesus belongs to and the kingdoms of the world to co-exist. It is possible to have a kind dual na-

tionality –belong to the kingdom of God and holding the nationality to which you were born. Pilate’s Governorship didn’t last long

after Jesus’ death and resurrection – did his encounter with Jesus change him? How do you feel about this kind of dual nationality?

St Patricks Night was celebrated in true style in Shearsby

with music and dancing going on well into the night.

The event raised an amazing £320 which will be donated to LOROS.

Many thanks to all who organised the evening, the excellent food,

and fantastic music from the Ann Mee Cheilidh Band.

Simnel Cake Ingredients For the cake:

Method

Roll out one-third of the almond paste. Using the base of the cake tin as a guide, cut out an 18 centimetre round. Grease the cake

tin and line the bottom and side with greaseproof paper.

Combine all the cake ingredients in a bowl. Beat well until thoroughly blended. Spoon half of the cake mixture into the prepared

tin and smooth the surface. Top with the round of almond paste. Spoon the remaining cake mixture on top and level the surface.

Bake in a preheated oven at 150°C/gas mark 2 for two and a quarter hours or until golden brown and firm to the touch. Cover the

top of the cake with greaseproof paper if it is browning too quickly. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the tin, and

leave to cool completely.

Warm the jam and use to brush the top of the cake. To decorate the cake, roll out half of the remaining almond paste and use the

tin to cut out an 18 centimetre round. Put on top of the jam and crimp the edges. Roll the remaining almond paste into 12 even-

sized balls. Place around the edge of the cake, attaching them with egg white. Brush the tops of the balls and the almond paste

with egg white. Place under a hot grill for one to two minutes, until the balls are golden.
