Dear Friends,

IF YOU BROWSE THROUGH A BOOKSTORE or surf the Internet these days, it does nottake long to notice that we live in an age of faith and at the same time, we seem to bescrambling for meaning. Bookshelves are crammed with writings on spirituality of alldescriptions, and the self-help section contains books with countless techniques for acontented inner life.

And, there are television programs, some of which foster impossible aspirations, onesthat most of us will never achieve. Chris Hedges, foreign correspondent with TheNew York Times describes it this way, “characters on television live in sprawling andartfully decorated lofts and multi-million dollar homes. They flit from high-pricedluncheons to lavish galas, where they parade their sculpted bodies in extravagantdesigner suits and gowns.” This is the life, we are supposed to admire and emulate. This is the life, we are told, we can all have.

In this scramble for faith, meaning and self-worth, I appreciate the words ofLawrence Lowell, the 22nd President of Harvard University. Just before the outbreakof World War I in June 1914, Lowell addressed the graduation class with these words,

“True success does not depend on achieving goals you setfor yourself, the satisfaction of ambition, or even the contentmentof attainment. True success is doing something worth doing.”

At Christ Church Deer Park, there are people with advanced education and intelli-gence, people who have worked hard, all of which give us unique status and uniqueresponsibilities that we can use to raise our voice on behalf of those who have novoice. We have the ability to imagine ourselves into the lives of those who do nothave our advantages and help change their reality for the better. Oh, we can choose toremain comfortably within the bounds of our own existence, and sit lightly to sufferingthat does not touch us personally. But, for people of faith, I expect that choice has itsown night-time sleeplessness and restless inner angst.

So, I am inspired by the many volunteers at Christ Church Deer Park who give oftheir time every week all year long at the Churches on the Hill Foodbank, providingdaily bread for those who cannot do it for themselves. They are doing somethingworth doing.

I am inspired by the many volunteers who are at the church at 7 am on two Saturdaymornings each month to cook and serve breakfast for those in our community whoneed a nutritious meal. They are doing something worth doing.

I am inspired by the Kids of PromiseLand. When they learned that every 30 seconds,a child dies of malaria, they challenged us all to make a ten-dollar donation for a

bednet to help young people in faraway places plagued withthe fatal effects of this disease. They are doing somethingworth doing.

And now, the Kids of PromiseLand have presented us withanother opportunity. When they discovered that some oftheir friends would not be going to summer camp becausetheir parents could not afford the fees, they decided to raisemoney to make it possible. They are doing something worthdoing.

In the scramble for faith, meaning and self-worth, perhapsthese are the kinds of things Jesus meant when he told hisdisciples to go into the world and spread good news. Andmaybe that’s what Lawrence Lowell meant when he told thegraduates at Harvard 96 years ago - true success is doingsomething worth doing. It’s as difficult and as simple as that.

Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplishedalone, but we are able to do some amazing things together asa faith community to make a difference in this world.

Philosopher Seneca once said: “As is a tale, so is life: not howlong it is, but how good it is, is what matters.”

I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable summer.

Yours faithfully,

CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK SUMMER 2010

From theUpper Room

WELL, IT HAS BEEN a little over a month since my ordinationas a deacon and I am just beginning to feel like I am settlinginto my new role as your assistant curate.

It has been an exciting first month, visiting, preaching, administrative work and my first baptism. Baptism hasalways been one of my favorite celebrations and the baptismof Francesca Devine and Sydney Callaghan was even morespecial for me as they are children who I have taught inPromiseLand.

The transition has not been as unsettling as I thought itmight be or was warned it would be. A great deal of thecredit for that goes to you, the people of Christ Church.Your lavish support and encouragement has been amazing. I am so grateful that I was appointed the assistant curatehere, not only do I have the opportunity to continue towork with and learn from Judy but I have none of the other‘new place’ issues of learning names, practices and culturethat some of my fellow deacons have. And for that I amthankful.

I also want to thank the wardens and you for the beautifulnew office space. It is a joy to work in, if you haven’t seenmy new digs, drop by to say hi sometime.

As your new assistant curate there are two projects on mydance card that I would like to share with you. The first is,in part, a result of the joining of the 9:15 and 11am services. This has meant a combination of two liturgical teams ofreaders, intercessors, chalice bearers, sub-deacons, serversand sidespeople. With the help of Anne Larkin, we have aworking summer schedule. Thank you Anne.

After the 10am service on Sunday, Sept 26th, there will be a meeting of all liturgical participants. At this meeting wewill get to know each other, establish and confirm roles andresponsibilities and have some fun. If you are already a liturgical team participant you will receive and invitation; ifyou are not a reader, intercessor, chalice bearer, sub deacon, crucifer or sidesperson and you would like to be - pleasespeak to me. I welcome your participation.

The second project is to develop a lay pastoral visiting team.‘The people of God caring for the people of God.’

This is the essence of pastoral care - one parishioner visiting, encouraging and caring for another.

Many of you are already doing this - visiting fellow parish-ioners who are ill or housebound. This initiative seeks toacknowledge the excellent work already being done and tobuild on it.

Judy and I want you to be included in the pastoral care ofChrist Church. Pastoral care may include a personal visit toa parishioner at home, in hospital or a long term care facility.Or it may be a friendly phone call or a note sent throughthe mail. If you are interested in this please contact me.

It continues to be my privilege and joy to serve you andChrist Church. Thank you.

Warmly,Samantha

UpdateFun Filled Summer Children 4 years and older are invited to gather in theChapel of St Nicholas for the PromiseLand Summer FaithClub. There will be art projects, great movies, and tons offun! Children will join their families for Holy Communion.

Malaria Bed NetsThank you to everyone who contributed to the Bed Netcampaign. With your help we raised $1, 415.20. That haspurchased 141 bed nets. That means that 141 children, andtheir families will sleep safely.

Send A Kid to CampWOW – when we said “We believe we can do it!” in ourflyer asking for your support for our summer outreach proj-ect to send 2 kids to camp and give 8 others backpacks fullof fun summer stuff we knew you would help us. We arethrilled to report that we can send 3 kids to camp and give8 kids backpack full of fun summer stuff.

Parish ForumAn Update...

THE MANDATE of the Parish Forum is to provide advice tothe clergy and corporation on key issues that are importantto the congregation and central to their interest. It is expectedthat the Parish Forum will meet approximately three times a year for two hours. A Working Group of 24 permanentmembers represents a cross section of the CCDP communityand everyone in the congregation interested in attendingParish Forum meetings is welcome.

The first Parish Forum was held on Sunday March 21st andwas attended by approximately 75 individuals. The subjectwas the combined Sunday morning services. There wasstrong consensus that the single service at 10:00 a.m. wasfulfilling the worship needs of the parish and that it shouldbe the model for going forward.

On May 27th members of the Parish Forum WorkingGroup met to identify potential topics for discussion duringthe coming year. They are listed below and are not in anypriority.

Please let us know your priorities and if you are interestedand willing to work on these topics. The Working Group isplanning to meet early in September and to have a ParishForum most likely in October.

BOOKS, BOOKS and MORE BOOKS!THE MAY BOOK SALE was a reasonable success. We sold lots of books but there were still many left over.

The volunteers who helped on both days were wonderfuland enthusiastic and deserve a big thank you. Also a specialthanks to Rita Becker and Judith Maxwell for all their helpand advice.

We’ve decided to hold another sale next year if we can find a suitable space to sort and store all the books that come induring the year.

Our dream is to use the “book sale money” to buildshelves/cupboards so that we no longer have to take up limited rummage space.

Ben Dibben and Maggie SymonsBook Sale Co-ordinators

Calling all home bakers, preserve makers, knitting, sewing and craft people....NOW IS THE TIME to think about contributing to the annualChristmas Fair (this year, on Saturday, November 27th)

When you are putting up this year’s jams, jellies and homepreserves, remember the Fair and put aside a few jars todonate to this popular event.

Donations of knitted, sewn and craft items, jewellery andtreasures, baskets, tins and fine linens are also appreciated,as are donations of bottles valued at $5.00 and up for theever popular “Bottle Table”.

CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK SUMMER 2010

RUMMAGE, RUMMAGEand MORE RUMMAGE!OUR SPRING RUMMAGE SALE was another tremendous success (grossing $11,000) largely due to the enormous volume of donated items, the huge number of shoppersand, last but not least, the help of some 75 loyal RummageDay volunteers (who have returned year after year for aslong as I can remember). Thanks also to the valued supportof Jean King, Denise Gomes and Denis Delisle.

It truly “takes a village” to put these sales together. With theever increasing volume of donations, your team, who workthroughout the year, is looking for help to ease the work-load.

YOUR RUMMAGE TEAM NEEDS YOUR HELP!!

- Someone to sort and price ladies’wear (on a regular basis)

- Someone to sort and price men’s wear (as needed)

- Someone to sort and price shoes and handbags (as needed)

AND...MOST IMPORTANTLY...

- someone to take on the position of Co-ordinator, as I nowfind it necessary to focus my energy on my health.

Over the past several years, the co-ordinator has come fromwithin the team...this is not going to happen this time.

It is somewhat urgent that this position be filled as soon aspossible, certainly before the October sale.

You have to agree that the Rummage Sales are importantevents in the life of this church, not only financially, butsocially. They create fellowship, a sense of tradition and pridein the success of our efforts. I’ve been involved with therummage sales for 15 years (yet not as long as many others)...I know the feeling!

LET’S KEEP THE TRADITION GOING!!!

Are you a knitter lookingfor a project?OVER THE CENTURIES, shawls have come to symbolizecomfort and peace. Christ Church Deer Park has formed a Prayer Shawl Ministry, which has become an internationalcause in the ecumenical community.

Shawls are given as a symbol of the prayers of the communityto those who are sick at home, hospital or in a seniors’ residence. Hand knitted shawls have been presented to ourshut-ins over the past year and we have seen how muchthey have been appreciated.

Shawls can be simple or elaborate. They can be a diagonalshape, a large rectangular scarf or simply a smaller lap rug.

For all knitters, women and men (yes, men knit too!) whowould like to contribute to this initiative, please contactNorma Ross (416-929-5494). She will be pleased to provide patterns.

Notes from the Organ BenchIT’S JUNE AND “SUMMER IS A-COMIN’ IN”: while many take this is a cue to leave the city until September, lots of people- parishioners, visitors, people who are looking for a newchurch home - attend Christ Church Deer Park on Sundaymornings throughout the summer.

MalawiTHE MALAWI MATERNAL AND CHILDREN feeding programcontinues as one of the parish's major international out-reach initiatives. About one year ago, Bishop ChristopherBoyle, retiring Bishop of Northern Malawi, visited CCDPas part of his North American tour. From North America,he proceeded back to his home to take his seat as a Bishop in Leicester.

Since his departure, there have been some significant questions around the credibility of the individual electedas his successor. Due to these concerns, and upon theadvice of our contacts there, we held off making a thirdpayment for the program.

We were pleased to hear that the individual in questionwas recently not confirmed. Once we receive the updatereport from the medical administrator for the diocese onLikoma Island, Francis Vuma, we will share it with theCCDP community, and make our next contributiontowards this most important and effective initiative.
