The Helm Station is the official publication of the Manatee Sail & Power Squadron with twelve issues yearly. Opinions expressed in The Helm Station are those of the author of the article and do not necessarily repre-sent the position of The Helm Station, MSPS, or USPS. All rights reserved.

As I sit down to write my last Helm Station article, it gives me pause as I look back at a year that passed very fast.

Starting off with the 2016 C. O. W. – as I said in my remarks that night “This is your squadron,” and I hope I

was successful in making a few changes that benefit your MSPS. I did not make all of the changes I wanted but hopefully some good ones.

A squadron phone number was established for a consistent contact number for the public.

MSPS now takes credit cards for the ships store, classes and anything squadron related.

A storage cabinet was put into place for storage at the Elks Club for the items used at our general meeting and some teaching aids.

Statistically MSPS has not altered much over the year. Our membership numbers have leveled off after not adding the thirty plus 6 month free memberships that were added after an Americas Boating Course with only 1 or 2 becoming members after the free 6 months. Instead, we offer an additional 6 months free to a 1 year membership. Of course membership is very important, as USPS looks to expanding the membership base nationwide and we look to expand our local membership base. Our members are the best form of advertising for mem-bership; by just talking to people/boaters/kayakers/fisherman/neighbors/coworkers we gain new members – thank you all.

I feel as my term ends as MSPS Commander, that the squadron is a little bit better.

I look forward to a successful 2017.

The February Calendar has a lot going on:

04 Feb 2017 Commanders Reception at Palmetto Point Club House, Palmetto, FL

07 Feb 2017 Annual membership meeting – Palmetto Elks Club

11 Feb 2017 MSPS Change of Watch at Pier 22, Bradenton, FL

16 Feb 2017 OBP Bunker Hill Winery Tour and Lunch, Parish, FL

19-25 Feb 2017 USPS National Annual Meeting, Orlando, FL

SAFE BOATING

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Commander’s Reception on 04 Feb 2017and at the Change of Watch. As I wrote last month, some of our members will be assuming new duties in the Squadron, but the spirit, focus, activities, and fun will continue as before.

As I move on, I want to thank all the members who contributed to the activities of the Squad-ron Executive Department in the last year. Lt/C Rich Maggio S will be taking over as Execu-tive Officer. Rich brings a wealth of boating experience with him. I know that he will enjoy working with committee members participating in boat shows, Public Relations and Boating Safety Programs, and Community Activities. These include events such as the Just for Girls Fishing activities and Christmas Tree Sales as well as Vessel Safety Inspections.

We wish the Squadron Members attending the USPS National meeting in Orlando, 19-26 Feb 2017 the best in their activities there, and with the best to those members who will be on the District 22 Cruise to the Caribbean and the Panama Canal from 26 Feb—08 Mar 2017.

So……...let’s party on to start the month and then carry on with our safe boating programs in 2017.

Boating is fun .. We'll show you how.

The Left Coast Amateur Fishing Report

The January report is short and sweet due to “not so hot” weather patterns with wind, wind and more wind. One week had decent weather and many of us were able to get out and try our luck. Water temperatures have been in the low 60’s and most available fish are moving around looking for their winter home so search you will; bottom fishing is hit or miss. After the recent cold spell most baitfish have run off to warmer water; it’s time to get out the lures and live shrimp. The big excitement was Lynne & I both catching dolphins within minutes of each other. We were reeling in a catch and stinkin Flipper stole our dinner. Both dolphins got off; they are much smarter than you may think. February could bring us some nice days on the water with opportunities to hone our fishing skills, don’t miss the chance. Be safe, have plenty of fuel on board, watch the weather for quick changes and catch’um if you can.

Here’s a simple recipe to use on just about anything except cereal: Salsa Criolla

Cut ½ red onion into thin slices, wash & drain, blend with ½ tomato cut small, chopped cilantro, s & p, juice from one lemon, 1T olive oil, you can add green pepper strips (recommended), or aji amarillos. Mix together in a bowl and serve with fish or chicken.

Greetings! I am happy to tell you that this will be my last report as AO! Starting next month, following the Change of Watch, I will be sliding over to the XO seat, and we will have a new Administrative Officer, Matt Braatz. Please join me in welcoming Matt to his new position with our Squadron. Matt has been a USPS member for roughly 40 years, beginning in Norwalk

and Darien, Connecticut, then Savannah, Georgia, and finally Manatee. Matt, an Advanced Pi-lot, has been local for about four years, living on the beautiful Manatee River. His extensive experience will be a true benefit to all of us. I am sure he will have no problem settling in to his new job, and I hope he can help me settle in to mine! As I write this, our most fortunate members are up in St Pete enjoying this fine weather on this month’s boating C & R. I hope you are having a wonderful time. Thanks to P/C Carl Ny-man JN and Don Tress P for organizing this event. And this afternoon, you will be enjoying a fine luncheon at Frescos. Thank you Lt Monique Gutierrez S for helping to arrange that for us. For those of you who missed this event, remember that if you don’t join the flotilla head-ing up to any of this year’s destinations, you are still welcome at the luncheon planned for each event. Most events are within a short drive from here, and it’s a fun way to see the ar-ea, acquaint yourselves with various marinas, and have some fun with your fellow squadron members. And that’s what it’s all about! The big news is the Change of Watch in February. Some of the squadron will leave their cars at home and sail over 10-12 Feb 2017 Thanks to P/C Tom Brown P for making these arrange-ments. And don’t forget to plan for our March. C & Rs - Tarpon Springs, 20-23 Mar 2017 and Ca-ladesi State Park, 23-26 .Mar 2017. These events are being arranged by P/Lt/C Mike Stew-art SN and P/C Carl Nyman JN/Don Tress P, respectively. And special thanks to P/C Charlie Brunner SN for his overseeing the entire 2017 boating schedule. Finally, thanks again to Monique for organizing January’s Royal Lipizzan Stallions event, and Cedar River Fish Camp luncheon. I hear we had a big crowd, and the weather was great! Monique even got interviewed by the Bradenton Herald and was quoted in Sunday’s paper. Another 15 minutes of fame to one of our own! Debra and I are off to Lake Tahoe for a week. See you at the C. O. W! Enjoy this beautiful ‘spring’ weather, and when on the water, be aggressively safe.

Join us for our Spring Getaway with destinations this year of Tarpon Springs and Caladesi, be part of the flotilla for one or both destinations.

The Plan:

Tarpon Springs - Arrive on Monday (20 March) and experience the downtown area with ex-cellent Greek food, seafood, and numerous tourist shops. We will be at Turtle Cove marina (turtlecove-marina.com) for three nights in this great location only three blocks from down-town Tarpon Springs. Marina info - floating docks, fuel available (discount with BoatUS card), size restricted to 60’ LOA or 20’ beam. Look for more information on this trip from Port Cap-tain Mike.

Depart on Thursday, 23 March (Captain’s prerogative) for this very short (14NM) trip south to Caladesi Island.

Caladesi Island State Park (www.floridastateparks.org/park/Caladesi-Island) - Arrive on Thursday (23 March) and enjoy the nature of this Florida state park and the camaraderie of squadron friends in a location with only one distraction—the beach. As is customary we have invited St. Petersburg squadron to join us for this trip and we look forward to their participa-tion. We have the pavilion reserved for the 24th and 25th, so we’ll have a location for a vari-ety of activities. Marina info - floating docks, size issues for boats with great than 12’ beam and/or 4’ draft. Look for more info later from Port Captains Don & Carl.

Depart homeward bound on Sunday, 26 March.

The Port Captains for this year’s trips are:

Tarpon Springs Captain: Mike Stewart, SN ([email protected])

Caladesi Island Captain: Don Tress, P ([email protected])

January Event

20-22 Jan 2017~~C & R St. Petersburg

This cruise started out on an unusual note as we had more boats than could be accommodated at one marina. We had seven boats at the Vinoy Marina and seven boats at St. Petersburg Municipal Marina. Several boats had arrived early on Thursday due to reports of bad weather for the later part of the weekend. All went well until Friday when several boaters decided to leave the Vinoy due to mechanical problems and the expected winds, leaving only three boats there. On Saturday, one trawler left St. Petersburg at dawn to avoid the winds that did increase significantly later in the day. Most were scheduled to leave Sunday morning but shortly after the “Frescos Waterfront Restaurant” C & R lunch on Saturday, the docks were clear. Don Tress P and I had a shorter run across the bay than most that went south. That afternoon we all were rolled about but all made it home safely. This was a repeat of previous boating events to St. Petersburg in January where weather was a significant problem and my recommendation for the future planning is to forget January for any boating events of even moderate distance. On the positive side, the weather prior to the winds was perfect. We had mild temperatures with a light wind and plenty of sun. Docktails on Friday were light and enjoyed by many on the St. Petersburg dock. The weath-er discussion Saturday morning was also lightly attended, as we knew what was coming. Many enjoyed the tra-ditional walk to the farmers market that morning in balmy weather. Lots of squadron members participated in the christening of the new “Bucket List” on the St. Petersburg Municipal dock was done earlier in the day went smoothly. The C & R went on as scheduled and as before we filled most of the outside seating at “Frescos”. Another fun event enjoyed by many. P/C Carl Nyman JN

What fun we all had!!

You can become a Helmsman for The Helm Station by contributing $10 in honor of the month of your birthday. We will publish your name on The Helmsman Page and recognize your birthday during your birth month. Sign up in January to have your support listed throughout the year.

If you paid to join the Helmsman Page ($10/year) you are also eligible for a free classified ad in two consecutive issues. What a deal! Contact the editor to take advantage of this opportunity to clean out the old boat locker.
