~ AWANA NEWS ~ We had some “madness” going on (in a good way, that is) in March here at Zion AWANA Club as we had

some special activities each of the four club nights. On the 4th, we had crazy hair night and did we

have some crazy – and also creative - hair-dos!!!

The amazing handiwork of Janae Griess on the back of Tim Herman’s head. ☺

March 11th was Backwards Night. Not only did we wear our

clothing backwards but we ran our club night backwards. Cubbies

sang a song backwards, Trek ran the bases backwards in their

kick soccer game and T&T and Sparks listened to

their Council Time message sitting backwards. (I

was so impressed that Mark not only had his belt

on backwards but also his shorts!)

(Picture of AWANA Commander–unsure if she is

“coming or going”. ☺)

On the afternoon of Saturday, March 17th, Cougar Palace at

WNCC was the place to be as we had AWANA

Games there. Our Sparks placed 4th on their

circle, T&T Girls got 1st and four of our T&T

Boys joined the boy’s team from Monument Bible

Church and took 3rd place. I was SO PROUD of

all of our clubbers!

At club on Sunday the 18th, our special activity was to wear as much green as possi-ble. I told the clubbers and staff that we still needed to

make sure that we wore our uniforms as our AWANA missionaries, Rick & Fairy Hattan, would be observing our club this evening. We passed “with flying colors” – red/blue/green/yellow. ☺Ha! I have included a picture of a game the Cubbies played on the 18th for a couple of reasons . . . one of the comments that Rick & Fairy

made to me is the great group of LIT’s (high school “leaders in training”) that we have in our club. Something I really ap-preciate is someone who will do things “above & beyond” what is expected of them and that is what Kayla Schanaman (LIT in Cubbies) did for one of the games. She drew a life size picture of Goliath with a bulls’ eye between his eyes for the target of where the Cubbies were supposed to hit him with a bean bag. Simple – yet a fun, new game for the Cubbies! Great job, Kayla!

As of this writing, we have one more club night in March and we are looking forward to having a former clubber as our special guest/speaker. She is also the daughter of a former Commander here at Zion – Jennifer (Schlager) Yost. This past January, she and her husband travelled to Tanzania with a group from Com-passion International. They got to meet the little boy that they sponsor and we are looking forward to hearing all about their trip as well as seeing pictures. We will also be enjoying Nachos this club meeting - thanks to the graciousness of the Farm & Ranch Expo committee from Zion in charge of concessions. AWANA is the lucky recipients of supplies that are leftover.

Congratulations to our February Clubbers of the Month: Sparks – Hannah Boyd & Nathan Schick; T&T – Alexandra Fuentes & Micah Schick and Trek – Megan Gifford. Way to finish strong, Clubbers!!! Looking ahead to April . . . We will not have club on April 1st & 8th due to it being Palm Sunday and Easter. We will resume on the 15th – with only 3 MORE REGULAR CLUB NIGHTS LEFT!!! Talk about CRAZY!!! (April 15th is our re-scheduled Grandparent’s Night.) Although we won’t be having club on Easter Sunday, the AWANA Staff will be providing and serving Easter Breakfast between the two Sunday morning services. Please join us for some great breakfast casseroles, breakfast baked goods and fresh fruit. It is always a great time of fellowship as well! The reason we celebrate Easter is the heart of AWANA’s message. We want EVERY child that comes to club to know that Jesus died for their sins and that their belief in this gift from God will result in living Eternity in Heaven . . . On behalf of the AWANA Staff, our prayer is that all who are reading this have placed their trust in our Living, Risen Savior!!! Cheryl Rose, Commander

We enjoyed a smorgas-bord of different food items that were red, pink white or valentine shaped. There were 32 people in atten-dance. The group held a short meeting after the meal. Host for the March meeting will be Don and Clau-dette Schmidt and Dwayne and Karol Stricker.

for our dinner. We had our meal planned out by us-

ing some wonderful chicken given to us from the

soup supper. At 12:30 PM the day of our meal, I was

informed that there was no Jeremiah House due to

Spring Break. Our group was not told this. The

chicken was made into delicious chicken salad and

served to the clients at the Office of Human Develop-

ment. They were happy with the unexpected lunch.

Thank you to Ladies Guild for your gift of food. Next

month is our last dinner of the school year. We will

try to have a pizza party.

Hostesses were: Janae Griess and Joyce Kautz. There was an accounting of the items made for the soup supper: 88 bags of noodles, 60 loaves of bread, 70 angel food cakes and 28 pies to be brought in. Angel food cakes will be sold for $7 and quarts of soup for $8. The 4C’s Ladies Fellowship will be held at the Civic Center with the music being provided by Zion. One of the 100-cup coffeemakers was not working so it was replaced with a new one. There is still the need for two blenders. The 4C’s Lenten services will be here at Zion on March 18th. Finger foods will be served with the weekend group in charge. The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Helen Maier, Secretary

MISSION CORNER:

Luke 24:34 "It is true! The Lord has risen. . .”

As we praise God for blessing us with another

wonderful season to celebrate the resurrection of our

Lord Jesus Christ, we are called to remember our

brothers and sisters throughout the world who cannot

openly celebrate this season due to sever persecution

because they have trusted Christ as their Lord and

Savior.

In our Adult Sunday School class, taught by Barb

Kautz, we are studying about the 40 year journey that

the Israelites experienced before they could enter the

promised land. We learned about a Hebrew word

called ze’akah and discussed a few places where it

was used in the Bible. This word is “one of the most

impassioned, power-filled words in Hebrew and com-

municates intense emotion. It is usually translated

“cry” or “outcry”, the depth of suffering that causes

such a cry is not conveyed by English words. It im-

plies a heart-wrenching wailing; though there are no

recognizable words; when you hear it, you know what

it is. Such an outcry rises out of great pain, suffering

and despair caused, not simply by impersonal suffer-

ing but by the brutality and cruelty of other people.” It

reminds us of the cry of our dear Lord Jesus for the

cross when he cries out in Matt 27:46 - “Eloi, Eloi,

lama sabachthani?" This means "My God, my God,

why have you forsaken me?" “Scripture reveals that

God never fails to hear ze’akah, and His response

against those who cause it is frightening.” Our class

agreed that this is the cry heard from the hearts of

those persecuted throughout the world because of

their faith in Christ.

This cry also reminds us of God’s chosen people

and our responsibility to reach them with the gospel of

Jesus Christ as other nations try “to destroy the State

of Israel as we know it”. There are active “hate-fests

that are being held on many American college cam-

puses.” “Deep seated anti-Semitism is surely on the

raise . . . along with a documented rash of hate

crimes.”, according to The Friends of Israel. Please

remember to pray for and actively support The Friends

of Israel who are standing against the tide of hatred

and oppression of God’s chosen people. Their goal is

to teach God’s Word and reach these precious people

with the truth of the gospel. Please see the missions

table for more information.

In Christ’s Love,

Linda, Mission Secretary

SUNDAY SCHOOL: Welcome spring!! We are so excited for our annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 7th at 1:00! We always start with a devo-tion from Pastor Andy, and then the hunt is on. We want to thank everyone who has do-nated candy and eggs. The kids love this event, and the parents have a great time together. Our spring quarter runs March, April, May. We have been talking to our teachers and some of them have expressed a desire to take the summer off. It is a well deserved time of rest for them. If you can help us out during the summer, please stop by the office for more de-tails. We are planning our Vacation Bible School and we will be doing an Olympic theme this year. And now from the mouth of babes: The Sunday School teacher asked her class where they might find the Beatitudes. Little Johnny answered, "Did you try the yellow pages?" How thankful we are to have Sunday School teachers who teach the true word of God. Happy Spring and Easter! Sharon, Robin, Deb

YOUTH: The big event for March was our youth group ski trip on March 3. We had a group of 25 people ranging from 6th graders to adults join us for a fun day of skiing and snowboarding this year. The day was a little on the windy side, but the snow was good and people had a great time. I got to spend a good amount of time with some of our brand new skiers after they had completed their lesson. I enjoyed watching their progress as each time down the slope they be-

came more and more confident and fell down less and less often. We had a couple of minor injuries causing aches and pains on the ride home for a few guys, but overall the day went very well. One of the biggest blessings was that there was very little snow or ice on the roads. The biggest news for our high school minis-try in March is that we finished our study of Philippi-ans. This was our second book of the school year as we finished Colossians just before Christmas break. After studying two New Testament epistles, our group was ready for something different. One book that Adam Harris has been asking about for a while is the Old Testament prophetic book of Amos – I think having a grandpa called Amos had some-thing to do with his interest. This type of book is so different from what I’m used to teaching and our group is used to studying that I’m sure we’re all in for an adventure. We are now two weeks into our study. I can already sense that I’m learning a lot – not just about the book but also about how to pre-sent the type of material in the book to teenagers. My hope and prayer is that our high school students will understand God’s message found in this book and will be able to apply that message to their lives. Our junior high outreach has also reached a turning point in what I am teaching them. We began in September telling the story of the entire Bible from front to back. My hope was to introduce the 6th-8th graders to Jesus in a way that helps them see that throughout all of human history God was pre-paring the world for the world changing events of the life, death, and resurrection of his Son. At the same time, I was hoping to help our students who already know Jesus to have a better understanding of how all of the events in the Bible fit together. As we wrapped up the story of the Bible in March, I feel good about how these lessons have been received by the students. For the remainder of the school year, my plan is to share lessons covering the most important teachings found in the New Testament epistles. The entire Bible points us to Jesus, and the epistles instruct us how to live for him as believ-ers. Please pray that all of our junior high students who have put their faith in Jesus would be eager to learn how to live for him. Also, pray that I can be effective in introducing Jesus to the new students who are showing up each month. Thanks to all of the faithful members of Zion who pray for, support, and encourage this ministry to our young people. Andy
