BSW, MBA, CFRE, CEO/President

The concept of hospice was only brought to

the United States in the late 70s. Our hospice was one of the first fourteen hospice organizations incorporated in North Carolina in the early 1980s by volunteers.

Decades have passed, but the HOCF

special volunteers remain critical components of our service to patients and their families. As you can see on the front

cover of this publication, volunteers of all ages and communities give their valuable time to make the lives of their neighbors better. The article on the facing page talks about the different types of volunteers and what it takes to become a professional hospice volunteer. Fortunately, we have made training as accessible as ever with online options, DVDs, and in person training and continuing education. Please, please consider giving whatever time you have weekly, monthly or even yearly to help our patients and their families live life to the fullest. And when you see one of our special volunteers, please thank them for their valuable service.

In addition to volunteers, we rely on trained and qualified certified nursing assistants, nurses, social

workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors, nurse practitioners and physicians to provide the quality care people depend on in the communities we serve. We are currently serving approximately 250 home care hospice patients, as well as patients in our 18-suite inpatient unit. We also actively visit approximately 150 palliative care patients in their homes and in facilities throughout our service area. What all of these numbers mean is this: Hospice of the Carolina Foothills wants to become the employer of choice in our service areas to ensure we have the most qualified, caring staff to provide the best care possible for years to come. Hospice of the Carolina Foothills has an all volunteer board with many talents and their commitment to be the employer of choice. This board represents all service areas and is always supportive of the staff and generous with those benefits?

Rita Burch, CEO/Pres.

Hospice of the Carolina Foothills celebrates Employee Day each year for all staff. Everyone enjoys a catered lunch, and staff are presented with awards based on their years of service beginning with seven. In 2019, the following staff celebrated more than 15 years of service: Pictured fron trow left to right: Chrissy Lail, Trish Greene, Lorie Guffey, Nancy Suelzle. Second row: Ron-da Patton, Heidi Owen, Rita Burch, Kim Lowery, Jane Foster, Third row: Allison Miller, Rhonda Lytle and Shelia Wilkerson.

Although we are fortunate to employee many staff with over 15 years of service, as we continue to

serve more patients, the need for professional staff in each discipline increases. It is not news to anyone that in this precarious health care environment, there is a documented nursing shortage. There is also great competition for quality, caring certified nursing assistants. If you or someone you know would like to work with a stable organization that has been around for more than four decades, provides excellent salaries, competitive benefits such as health, dental and vision care, short term and long term disability, life insurance, a cell phone and mileage for work, generous 401K program, flexible schedules, and education reimbursement for applicable degrees and certifications, you need to please send your resume ASAP to [email protected], visit our website and apply online at www.hocf.org or apply in person at 374 Hudlow Road, Forest City. We need nursing case managers for home care, and we are always hiring PRN RNs, LPNs, and CNAs for crisis care and back up in home care and the inpatient unit. As the census grows, the need for staff grows daily, so don’t delay. Join a caring team of professionals who strive to provide the very best for the patients and families we serve.

The Heart of Hospice Spring 2020: 3

National Volunteer Week is celebrated in April every year, but at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, we cel-ebrate our volunteers 365 days a year. Volunteers started the organization in the early 80s, and volunteers continue to be the key ingredient in making the organization operate the way it does today. Volunteers accomplish a variety of tasks assisting patients and their families, working in the office or at the Rutherford , Landrum and McDowell Resale Shops, helping out in the grounds and maintenance department, and serving as Faith in Action representatives in congregations. Volunteers save the organization hundreds of thou-sands of dollars every year. Patients and caregivers need volunteers to provide companionship, stay for a couple of hours while the caregiver gets much needed rest or errands done, and many other important services. The goal is to ensure that every patient who needs a volunteer at some point in their time under care will have a minimum of one volunteer. It is preferred that more than one volunteer is available for each patient, and that volunteers don’t have more than one patient so they can concentrate on the needs of that patient and family. Group volunteers from churches or families are encouraged as well. Another patient need has to do with pet therapists. Licensed pet therapy dogs and their hospice trained owners provide great joy for pet lovers who are patients at the inpatient unit and in facilities. If you have a licensed therapy dog, we need you today! Another major need right now involves the grief camp for children, Kids Path® Day Camp. The Camp is held Saturday, August 1 from 9 am until 4 pm, and we need you to help. If you are a registered nurse, a teacher, a guidance counselor or anyone interested in helping grieving children, we need you. Training is provided prior to the Camp. We have always said if you have something you enjoy doing, whatever your time or talent, Hospice has a place for you. The list of volunteer opportunities is really endless, and we want to ensure that you can do some-thing you enjoy while volunteering your time. Hospice volunteers are considered to be professionals, so every-one must be trained and have a background check completed and other paperwork on file at all times. Hospice training is avail-able at www.hocf.org so that you can complete the training around your busy schedule, or you can check out the training DVDs. If you prefer a face to face group setting, Hospice conducts train-ing quarterly in McDowell, Polk and Rutherford counties.

Please consider how you can help your neighbors by

volunteering with Hospice. All types of volunteers are needed and all are special. Give us a call at (828) 245-0095 or (800) 218-CARE (2273) today. You will be glad you did. Whether you have an hour a week, a month or even a year, you can make a difference.

Volunteer and counselor Pat Keeter helps campers get started with an activity while her husband and volunteer John takes pictures in the background and volunteer and chaplain Terry Honeycutt helps with another group.

Donated Funds Help Provide Programs for Community

Former Lake Lure Mayor and HOCF board president Bob Keith presents Rita Burch, HOCF CEO with the Olympiad donation.

From left, Gabriele Rissmeyer, Pat Jobe, Jessie West and Amanda Fore Sikes attended the Festival of Trees celebration in December to re-member Ruth and Allen Jobe, Pat’s parents and Jessie’s granparents..

Hospice of the Carolina Foothills relies on donations to pro-vide care for people regardless of whether they have insurance or other forms of reimbursement. For many years, 100% of dona-tions directly impact the patients we serve. There are many programs and services provided by HOCF that are not provided by other hospices, and these donations en-sure these special programs continue. Palliative care, grief coun-seling, some care provided in the SECU Inpatient Unit, and the Kids Path® Day Camp are provided as the result of community support. Many patients without insurance are also served as the result of this generosity. Groups and organizations raise money for HOCF. We also regularly conduct two annual fundraisers, the Membership Drive in April and Festival of Trees in Decem-ber, the organization operates three thrift stores, and many peo-ple choose to give memorials and leave HOCF in their will. Most recently, The Lake Lure Olympiad committee donat-ed funds from their August 2019 event to the 2020 Kids Path® Day Camp to be held in August. Hospice raised approximately $30,000 in November and December as part of the 23rd Annual

Festival of Trees. This year’s Festival of Trees will be held December 10. Hospice opened the first thrift store in downtown Forest City in 2000. Hospice operates thrift stores in Forest City, Marion and Landrum, SC. All proceeds from sales directly impact patient care and the programs previously mentioned. HOCF will pick up large items such as furniture in all three service areas, and the stores are all open six days a week. Memorial gifts can be sent to PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043. If you have questins about putting HOCF in your will or about including Hospice in estate planning, please discuss this with your attorney and call HOCF at (828) 245-0095. Your donations make sure Hospice of the Carolina Foothills can provide the very best care for your neighbors. Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

HOCF Reaches Highest Level of National Veteran Program Hospice of the Carolina Foothills is proud to an-nounce it is now a Level 5 Partner with We Honor Vet-erans, a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Level 5 is the highest level WHV partners can attain and includes several new required activities and yearly recertification. As a partner, Hospice of the Carolina Foothills is providing specialized care to Veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness. Aside from existing partner re-quirements, Level 5 partners place a greater emphasis on staff education and caring for Vietnam-era and com-bat Veterans. Additionally, Level 5 partners take on the role of regional mentor to other WHV partners work-

ing to enhance their programs. “When we set out to create the Level 5 program, we knew that it had to be different to

truly showcase the efforts needed to go above and beyond. Not only have you demonstrated your commitment, but you have helped shape the program and have continued as an example of what all hospice partners should strive to be,” said NHPCO President & CEO Edo Banach. NHPCO and the Department of Veterans Affairs launched We Honor Veterans in 2010 to address the growing need for Veteran-centered care, especially as Veterans are aging and need access to palliative and hospice care. “Hospice of the Carolina Foothills recognized how important it is to meet the needs of our veteran popula-tion in 2010 when we started achieving the We Honor Veterans Level 1 program,” Rita Burch, CEO and Presi-dent of the Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, said. “We have ensured that our staff and volunteers are continu-ally trained and that we better serve our veteran popula-tion as we have achieved now the fifth and highest level ten years later. We are committed to our veteran com-munity through this valuable program.” Learn more about the We Honor Veterans program at www.WeHonorVeterans.org and about Hospice of the Carolina Foothills at www.hocf.org. If you are a veteran and would like to assist other hospice and pal-liative care patients who are veterans, call us at (828) 245-0095.

It’s Time to Talk...NOW

National Health Care Decisions Day is April 16 each year. The date was inspired by Ben Franklin’s quip that “nothing in life is certain but death and taxes”. NHDD was founded in 2008 by Nathan Kottkamp, a Virginia-based health care lawyer, to provide clear, concise, and consistent information on healthcare decision-making to both the public and providers/facilities through the widespread availability and dissemination of simple, free, and uniform tools (not just forms) to guide the process. April 16 is dedicated throughout the country to em-phasize the importance of helping adults think about, talk about and complete living wills and health care powers of attorney known as Advance Directives. Various studies indicate that only about a quarter of all adults have engaged in advance care planning. This

results in crises occurring in health care facilities each day as loved ones struggle to make decisions. Simply put, advance care planning is about making decisions before a crisis occurs. Knowing your treatment options, weighing them against what is important to you and talking about these decisions is important. However, writing these decisions down is absolutely critical to ensuring that your wishes are taken into consideration, and sharing that information with loved ones, health care providers and facilities is absolutely imperative. Why would anyone need to complete advance directives? Conversations and this kind of planning gives clear guidance on what you want if you are unable to speak for yourself. A health care power of attorney allows you to designate someone to make all or some health care decisions for you when you temporarily or permanently cannot make these decisions because of your health. The health care power of attorney is not the same thing as a regular power of attorney that deals with business matters. A living will, also known as a declaration of desire for a natural death, is a legal document that a person uses to make their wishes known about prolonging treatment, etc. Both health care powers of attorney are state specific. Hospice of the Carolina Foothills often uses Five Wishes, another directive that meets the standards in North Carolina for a living will. This document speaks to a person’s specific medical, personal, emotional and spiritual needs at the end of life. Some people find the Five Wishes easier to understand and complete than the typical legal documents. The documents require the signature of witnesses not benefiting by the death of the person executing the documents, as well as the services of a notary public. There is another NC form called the MOST (Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment) that must be signed and retained by your doctor. This form must be updated an-nually at your primary doctor’s office to be valid. Hospice of the Carolina Foothills is committed to helping everyone in the community have conversa-tions about their wishes before a crisis occurs. Hospice staff will assist people in group settings or individu-als to discuss how to make decisions about care at the end of life and provide the necessary forms. There are also many valuable resources on the internet to help answer your questions. Please visit theConver-sationProject.org for a guide to help you talk to your doctor about your wishes. Also visit the same web-site for information about how to choose your healthcare power of attorney, To schedule an appointment for an HOCF staff person to speak to your church or other group or to set up an appointment to discuss ad-vance care planning with a hospice social worker, please give us a call at (828) 245-0095 or 800-218-2273.

Social worker Lorie Guffey discusses the “Five Wishes” with patient Betty McFarland.

HOSPICE OFFERS HOPE FOR GRIEVING ADULTS Hospice of the Carolina Foothills (HOCF) provides bereavement support for the families we serve for up to 13 months. This support is provided through a variety of newsletters, materials, phone calls, memorial services, and visits. HOCF also provides bereavement support for palliative care families when a palliative care patient dies. HOCF also offers a grief support group called HOPE for anyone in the community who is grieving the loss of a loved one, The Hope Support group is a small group designed for participants who have lost a loved one and would ben-efit from the extra support of others as they go through the grief process. The support group features sessions that are designed for participants to better help understand the grief process. Group sessions include educa-tion about the grief process, as well as an opportunity for participants to share their story. The group meets for six weekly sessions and includes the following topics: Typical reactions to grief and the emotions of grief, Understand-ing the process and tasks of the grief process, strategies for managing and coping with grief, finding new connections and support, identifying many losses within grief, strate-gies for dealing with special occasions and moving toward healing. Each participant is allowed the opportunity to learn about grief as well as sharing their own experience. Hospice is also offering the following assuming restric-tions for gathering have been lifted:Tues. April 28 11:30 – 2:00 Lunch and Learn event at HOCF: 374 Hudlow Road, Forest CityTues. Hospice of the Carolina Foothills strives to provide state-of- the-art, compassionate care for those dealing with serious illness, grief and loss. Over the past several weeks, we have been monitoring the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) tracking through regular updates with local health depart-ments, emergency preparedness agencies, and state and federal agencies.. In an effort to uphold our mission, and after careful consideration of the North Carolina Depart-ment of Health & Human Safety (NC- DHHS) and the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) recommendations, HOCF has updated our procedures and guidelines, to keep our patients, families, volunteers and staff pro-tected during this very serious public health crisis. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.HOCF is committed to the protection of our patients, fami-lies, staff and volunteers by adhering to standards of infection prevention and control. Our agency is implementing rec-ommendations which include screening and monitoring of symptoms in visitors, patients and staff, inventory of person-al protective supplies, review of policies, and increased clean-ing of high touch surfaces in our offices and inpatient unit. We regret the cancellation of our Memorial Service but must abide by the NC and Federal rules and recommendations. The best way to prevent the coronavirus is to prevent expo-sure to this illness. The virus is spread through person to per-son contact through respiratory droplets. We want to remind everyone that proper handwashing remains one of our best defenses against all infection, along with the recommen-dations for coughing or sneezing into your elbow and not touching your face, nose and eyes. Please visit the follow-ing websites for the most current information on the virus: www.cdc.gov/coronavus and www.ncdhhs.gov/coronavirus.We have implemented several measures of protection in our Inpatient Unit (IPU). The front doors will remain locked 24 hours a day. Upon entering the IPU every-one will be asked to complete a brief health question-naire. In addition, we have closed the community areas of our IPU including the chapel to visitors. We also have a plan in place regarding caring for our homecare patients. We are sorry for any inconvenience these changes may pose to you or your loved one. Our goal is to continue to provide excellent care to our patients and families while keeping everyone, including our staff and volunteers safe from the COVID-19 virus and other infections. Please know that HOCF will continue to monitor the situation with the Coronavirus and keep you updated on chang-es that may affect you or your loved one. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at 828-245-0095.
