Hispanic Heritage Month: Sept. 15th Oct. 15th

Hispanic Heritage Month is the period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 18 and ending on October 15. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin

American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

The Hispanic American Leadership Organization would like to cordially invite everyone to participate in an essay contest they are holding in order to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month. The essay is to

be around 500 words and typed. You can email me, Benjamin Fuentes, your essays at [email protected]. You can also hand in a hard copy to myself or any other HALO Exec. Member (Mark Marquez, Amanda Rivera, Sarah Plake). Everyone is welcome to participate in the contest.

    Deadline is October 15th.

The best essay will receive a $100 Gift Card to the Union bookstore to be used for books next semester.

The recent appointment of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court can be seen as a pivotal event in history for Hispanic Americans, because of the obstacles she has had to overcome in order to succeed. What obstacles do you think they were? What obstacles like these have you overcome or need to overcome to be a successful, accomplished Latino/a?
