Dear Member of the Communities of Little Haven & Talbenny22nd April, 2015

The Future of The Amenities AssociationThe support that the above has enjoyed over many, many years has shown a marked decline recently. This was highlighted at the AGM on April 16th when only 5 committee members & 3 people from the villages attended! It has therefore been decided to review whether or not this Association should be disbanded. However, we thought it appropriate to inform you what this would mean by listing both the annual & other recent activities of the Association which would cease:Annual: Picnic in the Paddock a village get-together, boules competition, picnic, etc. on the eve of the regatta Providing live music on the afternoon of the regatta to make the day an even better

festival unfortunately the weather has prohibited this for the past two years! Christmas trees supplied (free) to each participating house on the entry roads to

Little Haven to be illuminated by the householder providing a colourful backdrop to the festive season

We fund our activities primarily from a Christmas Draw, which is also a major social event, held in alternating pubs in the village a Christmas tradition!

Village social in the Bowen Memorial Hall where all local children meet Father Christmas & are given (free) gifts, (free) mulled wine & mince pies for the adults, & excitement for the kids another Christmas tradition!

The planters below the Little Haven signs at the entry to the village are maintained to give a good first impression of the village

also Recently: The Little Haven village green totally re-turfed The Elephants Grave re-pointed other maintenance work by National Trust

initiated Defibrillator acquired donated but installation & ongoing monitoring by

Association New bunting bought for decorating village for regatta but also available for

villagers to borrow Mast at top of slip-way base repaired & refurbished, mast re-rigged & provided

with flagsWe think you will agree that the above activities are in integral & vital part of the two villages life but we are not prepared to continue them with the current level of support & contribution from the villages. We will therefore be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting in The Bowen Memorial Hall on Thursday, 14th May, at 7.30pm where villagers from both villages are invited to come & discuss this issue. However, unless there is also a commitment from several villagers hopefully from some of the young bloods to join the committee & take responsibility for the future of our villages, then the Association will cease forthwith & the accrued funds spent as required until exhausted.

Yours sincerely, David Reed, Chair, The Little Haven & Talbenny Amenities Association

A prcis of 7 April Minutes 2015MATTERS ARISINGSafe Route to School We were advised by PCC that the works at the school have approx 10 weeks to run after which time they will arrange a detailed inspection to identify repairs required to area.In terms of enhanced footway provision there are some technical and land issues to overcome but at present there is no funding available to implement a scheme. Litter / Business Meeting A letter was circulated to local businesses to meet and help find a solution to this problem. Anchor Guest House has kindly offered to host the meeting. The Clerk will help set this up. AGENDA ITEMSCasual Vacancy Candidates were given the opportunity to introduce themselves. After a confidential vote Charlotte Alexander and Nia Davies were co-opted on to the Council. The Clerk thanked all candidates for applying.Flood Defences/Little Haven A petition against the proposed flood alleviation scheme was handed to PCC and copied to PCNPA. Cllr Mary Whitewright stressed that she had signed and supported the implementation of the petition in the capacity of a Little Haven resident and not in the capacity of Councillor. Signatories felt that, in general, the scheme appears to have been prepared with no consideration being given to the effect it will have on:

Loss of amenity in the usage of the upper part of the beach Appearance of the rock armouring, open culvert and flood gate Safety of the public, particularly children The effect on tourism The effect on the environment and habitat of the steamA list of particular points/concerns they would like to see addressed in relation to the proposal were put forward. A copy of these can be obtained by emailing the Clerk.PCC pointed out that schemes were an integrated whole so difficult to pick items that were acceptable and omit unacceptable elements. They pointed out that the Shoreline Management Plan policies for Little Haven are to 'Hold the Line' for the short/medium term with a 'managed realignment' thereafter as sea levels rise to the extent as to make the village unsustainable. In view of this PCC asked for confirmation of the Community Council's view. The Community Council advised PCC they fully support the residents' request not to go ahead with the scheme.Planning Application DeadlinesEnquiries were made as to why residents and the Community Council received copies of planning applications at different times and were given different deadlines. PCNPA advised that the deadlines given were laid down in their procedures and Community Councils are given two weeks and neighbours three weeks. They explained plans were validated before being sent out and they were often in a position to issue Community Council copies before having identified the neighbours.

ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR A VILLAGE INSTITUTIONThis April there is quite a significant anniversary in the village. It has been 20 years since a Londis sign went up on a building on the seafront. 20 years is a lifetime to some and a mere blink of the eye to others, but an anniversary like this one often prompts a moment of reflection. So, what has happened during this part of the life of the shop? The building has changed beyond recognition with an extension built over 15 years ago and two refits since. You can tell where the old shop ended by checking out the change in the pattern on the floor. Technology has moved on too. We hardly ever use a pricing gun these days with the advent of scanning and computer based stock control at the tills. Who remembers the old paper based method of using your credit card? Now we just flash the card at a small square box with contactless!! At the end of each month a cheque used to be written and posted to every supplier to pay the bill. Now, it just takes a few clicks at the computer and the money is automatically transferred from one bank account to the other. Paying wages has changed too. The old pay packet has all but disappeared with online banking and the big old calculation tables and sheets have disappeared with the computer programmes that automatically calculate the wages and send the information online to the Inland Revenue in real time. The shop has survived acts of God. Last year started with floods in the car park and finished with the lightning strike, effectively closing the shop for nearly a week. Arthur Mock - my grandfather - would have been turning in his grave. The only other time it has closed for

anything other than Christmas Day was for his own wife's funeral. Not sure he would have been happy about that either.and then there was the raid on the post office - least said about that soonest mended. There have been three weddings. One young couple actually met and started dating whilst working with us. Jonathan and Sian later married and had a family. Then Trish walked down the aisle with Jonathan and more recently we have seen Sally and Reg finally tie the knot. We have another to look forward to now as Jason proposed to his girlfriend during a recent weekend in Paris and she said yes. Sadly we have also had a number of funerals. There was Annie who lost her battle with cancer nearly 15 years ago and more recently Brian who died not long after his retirement. Even more recently we have lost Ben who spent many an hour playing around the back of the shop with Nathan and Jason when they were much younger. We have seen four babies born. Adam arrived first to Trish and Jon. Juliet has had Findlay and more recently Alexus. Grayson - the fifth generation of the family to be working in the shop - arrived to Nathan and Whitney. Yes, his grandmother has had him serving already!!We have seen many customers come and go and people have moved to and away from the village. Sadly there have been a number whose funerals we have attended. What hasn't changed - Linda has been with us forever. The only member of staff who has survived the whole 20 years. What are we most proud of? Last year we were one of the Londis Store of the

year finalists in the large store category. We were one of a handful of stores from nearly 2,000 nationwide to make it to the final. The overall winner was another store from West Wales, from just outside Cardigan. Our success was due in no small part to the hard work put in by all the staff. But more than that we are most proud of the generations of youngsters we have helped move into the world of work. Teachers, doctors, a local radio presenter, members of the armed forces, mothers and fathers have all started their working lives with us. We have taught them how to sweep and mop a floor, the differences between cabbages, cauliflowers and lettuces. We have explained the difference between 'I can't work next week' and ' May I have next week off'. We have demonstrated the importance of customer service and what employers expect; held their hands whilst they have learnt to deal with officialdom and filled in their first PAYE forms; celebrated with them when exam results are good and offered a shoulder to cry on when they haven't quite reached the grade. It is said that it takes a whole community to raise a young person into a responsible adult and we are proud to be a part of that. So, Trish has moved to London leaving me in charge. The world moves on and we up-date, upgrade and keep up with the times whilst we re-invent ourselves. We remember where we came from and the change in the tiles on the floor re-minds us of that. So what might the next 20 years bring? Well one thing is for certain - the ice-cream machine is going nowhere, but there may just be another generation running things :)

WI NEWSThe April meeting was held on Tuesday April 14th at the Youth Hostel when members were treated to an enthralling talk given by Pamela Hunt about her career with the BBC. For many years she was involved with the Production Team for the recording of The Archers radio programme. She was responsible for the sound effects and brought along samples to demonstrate, - walking on dry snow was a rubber glove filled with cornflour , crunched up recording tape was used for hay, and many other examples. She ended the talk by telling us about her travels in her beloved Miss Daisy which is a 1934 Austin 7.Arrangements for the forthcoming Beetle Drive were discussed, and plans were made for the annual outing in June, which this year is to Gwili Railway and Aberglasney. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 12th, 7.30pm in Broad Haven Hall when Mr Dave Braithwaite will be talking about and demonstrating First Aid and Resuscitation. Everyone welcome.DALE FORT WILDLIFE WATCHCompetition Time at Wildlife Watch; who can catch the most crabs? This Saturday the competition was hotting up, just like the weather. The titles up for grabs were; who could catch; the most females, the most males, the biggest, the smallest and the most crabs. Laden with crabbing lines and bacon we set off down to the pontoon in Dale Village. Though a little slow to start with, the crabs soon started biting. With a little local help we soon had them rolling in. Some people were very skilled crabbers, with the highest number caught by one group at 31, while others werent so lucky. But by the end of the session we had managed to tempt 91 shore crabs and one massive hermit crab with bacon-y goodness. Our biggest find was a 6.8cm girl and our smallest was a 2.4cm boy. Girls are clearly greedier than boys as we caught 56 females and only 35 boys. After the fastest looking crabs had been selected and raced back into the waves, it was time to say goodbye to our impressive haul, and all the crabs were released. Next time: Saturday 9th May we will be seine netting at the Gann, please meet at 10am at the Gann car park. Could be very muddy and wet, please bring appropriate clothing and footwear. For more information about the group, visit the Dale Fort Watch Group webpage - www.wildlifewatch.org.uk/watchgroups/dale-fort. To book a place, contact Dale Fort Field Centre on 01646 636 205 or email Catherine on [email protected] or Helen on [email protected].

BIRD WATCH Species of the Month: Grey SquirrelThe Grey Squirrel was introduced to the UK in the late 19th or early 20th century from the USA. It is often considered to be a pest, mainly due to its habit of stripping the bark off trees, and is blamed for the decline of the native Red Squirrel. Grey Squirrels transmit the squirrel-pox virus; whilst the disease kills the red it does not appear to affect the grey. In Wales, there are now only a few pockets where the reds are still holding-on (mid-Wales, Anglesey and Clocaenog in the north). With Grey Squirrels here to stay, can we learn to love them? They certainly liven up my garden as they chase one another and bury their peanuts in the lawn. Squirrels are scatter-hoarders meaning that they cache small amounts of nuts and seeds in hundreds of different places, ready to be re-found when times get tough (they dont hibernate). This month, look out for young squirrels leaving the drey (a squirrels nest) which have been raised entirely by the female. Although predominately grey, Grey Squirrels may also show a warm-brown colour on their backs and flanks (some are even completely white or black). An angry squirrel utters a slow chuk-chuk-chuk and flicks its tail up and down the faster the flick, the crosser it is. A sideways tail swish indicates uncertainty or preparation for a difficult leap.Did you know? Squirrels weigh food (such as hazelnuts) in their palms to decide whether or not the nut inside is worth the effort of breaking open the shell. It is illegal to keep Grey Squirrels without a licence and it is illegal to release them into the wild. The only colour squirrels can see is yellow; all other colours are shades of grey. Their Welsh name is Gwiwer Lwyd. How to attract them to your garden: Make the squirrels work for their keep by providing monkey nuts or hazelnuts, although theyre just as likely to eat the peanuts and sunflower hearts you put out for the birds! A wide range of Squirrel-proof feeders are now available. A squirrel feeder box positioned on the entry route into the garden can help deter them from the bird feeders. If you have nesting birds, Grey Squirrels may eat eggs and chicks given the opportunity. My BTO Garden BirdWatch data show that Grey Squirrels are present in my garden for 63% of the year. In the summer of 2012 there were up to six squirrels in my garden at the same time, and this year weve seen up to four. Make Your Garden Count! If you enjoy watching the birds and wildlife in your garden why not take part in BTO Garden BirdWatch the largest year-round survey of garden birds in the world? Please contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk (Swansea and surrounding areas).Happy Garden Bird Watching! THE HAVENS COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS AND GARDENSOh the buzzing of the bees. What a wonderful sound to a soft fruit grower, watching them busily pollinate my gooseberries and currants. What marvellous weather! So many fine days and hardly any rain, yes we are already watering our plants. Indeed this year's weather pattern reminds me of the 1976 summer fingers crossed! In April, as I write, all the Blackthorn sloe (and my damson tree) are a mass of flowers with no leaves showing. In May we will have Hawthorn in flower (that was in leaf in April) and my cherry tree. They are both self pollinating, but I think they would set better with extra trees. We held our AGM in The Ocean Cafe (thanks again Mostyn) and I stepped down as Chairman and David Meanwell took over the duties. Rob Whittaker resigned and I took over as Treasurer, thanks Rob for holding the purse strings. My thanks to Shenal Yates, who continues as Secretary, for the excellent administration of THCAG.Well I did get all the potatoes into the ground eventually and the first of them to be planted 20th February (Abbot and Swift) should be ready by early May. These are new varieties for me and are part of my search for the perfect new potato! You will remember my use of loo roll cores at home for broad beans and onion sets because I wouldn't brave

the wet and cold weather in February at the allotment. Well the wonderful dry weather means I have to water them twice as much to get them established, so my reluctance in February has given me a load of extra work. Memo to self re February! You will also remember the saga of my purple sprouting and how I was going to rip out all these giant unproductive plants. Again, mostly due to lack of time I never actually got round to doing it and lo and behold I now have masses of purple sprouting. I guess if you plant a bit late (only a little, honest) they shut down early for winter and so come to fruition half a season later. There are plots available for 25 per year and a magnificent view at no extra charge. There is plenty of time to sow vegetables and flowers. Beetroot, carrots, lettuce, spinach, courgettes and so on are all suitable for direct sowing in the ground. Marigolds help keep pests away, have a long flowering season and make the view of the plot less industrial.Best wishes to you all for a great summer and good gardening.Patrick Hellings, Treasurer THCAG, 01437 781 319

QUIZ : ROSES : ANSWERS 1. Candle in the Wind by Elton John. The funeral of Princess Diana (1997).2. Petra (in Jordan), the ancient city sculptured out of the coloured sandstone.3. The Burnet Rose, a white rose common on sand dunes and limestone.4. Referred to Sir Francis Rose, (1909-79) an English painter whom she regarded as extremely talented and she did possess a large collection of famous paintings. Sir Franciss paintings hung in her drawing room, Gauguin and Matisse were relegated to the lavatory!5. A corruption of the Welsh word : Rhos or Roose meaning Peninsula.6. This dates back to Greek mythology : Cupid bribed Harpocrates (the god of silence) with a white rose not to reveal the secret love affairs of Venus. The white rose became the emblem of silence. Roman council meetings always had white roses on their tables to signify everything said was in confidence. The Victorians took to decorating their ceilings with white plaster roses. But today the sole remnant of this tradition is a plain white plastic cone!7. This is supposed to imitate the process of catching the plague of medieval times but it was only first recorded in the 1880s. The ring of roses is quite unlike the black swollen glands (buboes) of bubonic plague. And sneezing was not a symptom of pneumonic plague. So its source is unknown.8. The Patriot by Robert Browning ( May 1812-1889) m. Elizabeth Barrett.
