As we move into the last month of 2012, I’m feeling a bit
nostalgic. It has been a tremendous year for many reasons
starting of course with the build-up to the Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee in June and all the celebrations and
festivities that went with it.
Then on to the Olympics and the Paralympics - I still hear
people talking about it, we are still reading about it and the
feel-good factor persists. We did find a lot to be proud
about in London and elsewhere during the summer, but
let’s hope that the legacy will last long into the future.
A bit less wonderful was our disappointing summer
weather-wise, though perhaps in retrospect, it wasn’t all
bad - the trees have obviously liked the extra moisture as
the autumn colours have been absolutely stunning this
year.
Haslemere definitely put on a good show for all the events
during 2012. More recently the Haslemere Players’
production of The Sound of music was a resounding
success. Calamity Jane will be the next production to look
out for in the New Year. Don’t miss the Carol Singing in the
High Street on December 12th not to mention the
Christmas Cracker concert in the Haslemere Hall on 22nd
December (see page 8 for both events).
I wish you all a very happy Christmas and peace and
prosperity for 2013.

When we think about living consciously we
may think about our carbon footprint,
recycling, buying local organic foods, walk-
ing, cycling, car sharing. Doing our bit to
make a small difference to the earth’s
resources by treading softly. But what
about us? The human species; we are part
of Mother Earth. Do we
tread softly on each other ?
Events in my life have
taught me to tread softly,
but tread softly through
fear. Through kindness to
myself, the gift of therapy
(in various forms), the will
to honour and speak my
truth I found my power
and learned to tread softly
with love. I am safe in my
power and light now and
they are mine to keep.
Here is a lesson that I
learned along the way.
When people hurt us, are
angry with us, make us feel
pain, it is they who are
suffering. We human beings
need our pain to be seen, acknowledged
and validated. When the pot is full, the lid
comes off and usually our nearest and
dearest, or those who will not hurt us back,
will be at the brunt of our pain – or we at
theirs. Maybe in these moments, we can
stop to recognise this?
Neale Donald Walsh puts forward the
question: “What hurts you so bad that you
want me to feel your pain?” This is a great
place for us to turn our attention to when
we are suffering due to someone else’s lack
of consciousness, inability to understand
their own process or difficulty to reach out
for help and support.
I was walking through the woods the day
after I wrote this, and started to come off of
the regular pathway, ambling through the
holly and wondering what I was doing! It felt
like I was on a treasure hunt. I thought I was
going to find a majestic tree to inspire my
day. Then I saw two beer cans lying in my
beautiful woodland. I
stopped and wondered if
this was what I was
supposed to find. Then it
dawned on me. Yes, this
was my treasure!
I saw the beer cans and
realised that they were an
expression of someone
else’s pain. Then it
occurred to me that I had a
choice. I could pick them
up, acknowledge their
suffering and take responsi-
bility for seeing this by
holding it with love, or I
could choose to see it and
ignore it. I happily picked
up several beer cans on
that walk, blessing the
expression of the bearer’s
pain with my capacity to love, whilst
clearing my woodland.
If we can learn to live more consciously by
treading softly with each other, we
will feel happier and more connected in
our hearts and minds. As we learn to
tread softly with love, see each other’s
pain, and take personal responsibility for
acknowledging each other’s truth, we may
even raise the vibrational energy of the
planet.

Christmas Music in Haslemere Get into the spirit of Christmas with carol
singing and the Christmas Cracker Concert.
Christmas Carolling with the Chamber
Start the Christmas season off in traditional style with the
Haslemere Chamber of Trade and Commerce’s Carol Concert,
outside The White Horse in the High Street on Wednesday 12th
December from 7.00pm – the roads around will be closed off
to traffic! This annual event is the Chamber’s way of saying a
huge “Thank you” to the people of Haslemere for supporting
local businesses, particularly during the summer months when
the town was almost cut off due to the gas works!
Last year, around 500 people gathered around the war
memorial to sing Christmas Carols and enjoy the complimentary mince pies, kindly
donated by local retailers including Waitrose, Tesco, Co-op and The Granary,
accompanied by free mulled wine to keep the December cold at bay!
A fun and festive evening for all the family, topped off with a visit from Father
Christmas on his sleigh!
(If you would like to help out with handing out the mince pies etc – please
contact [email protected] or call on 07583 342845 – thank you!!)
Carol Concert for Massed Choir and Audience

Haslemere Hall on Saturday 22nd December. The fun evening will
consist of a programme of Seasonal Music and comic verse complete
with Mulled Wine & Minced Pies.

a White Christmas, We Three Kings (Knowles), 12 Days of Christmas,
We Wish You a Merry Christmas, plus all the usual favourites.

well as individual items. All have been chosen to be entertaining and
fun for all the family.

Now is the best time to start thinking
about how your garden could look next
year. A garden that has been designed well should not
only look good, but make those that are in it feel
comfortable and relaxed. A garden should be
ergonomic, to allow for freedom of movement, and
structures should not be too over-powering and fit
the space they inhabit.
Pathways should be wide enough for comfortable
movement – nobody wants to have to squeeze
through too small a gap. As a general rule, a path-
way for two people needs to be a minimum of 1.5m
wide, or 0.9m for a single person path.
Steps can provide a pleasing change of dimension,
but any change of levels requires a height that is
comfortable to access. Risers that are no higher
than 150mm, and a minimum step width of 150mm
will ensure the user feels safe. A good guideline is
to always consider smooth and comfortable
movement through a garden. With that in mind, it
is worth considering a landing of twice the width of
the steps, at intervals of approximately every ten
steps.
Terraces, patios, paving and decking needs to be
the correct size to fit the client’s purpose. It is
important to find out how many people they would
like to accommodate, and whether both tables and
chairs will be used. Additionally, there will need to
be space for mingling. They will not want their
guests disappearing into the borders if the patio
area leads too quickly into the main garden.
Materials should also be considered as some
smooth slabs can be slippery.
Structures can provide an exciting new aspect to a
garden, but height must be considered to allow for
headroom, and wide enough to allow for planting
on either side.
When choosing Plants, it is important to allow
them enough space to grow. If planted next to a
pathway, access may soon become difficult, and a
position which necessitates pruning can result in
the plant losing its natural shape. Placing larger
plants at the back of a border, and smaller ones at
the front will help alleviate this problem. It is also
worth trying to avoid plants with thorns. A nice idea
is to use plants to provide fragrance in your garden,
particularly along the edges.
Your choice of plants must take into account year-
round interest – flowering in spring and summer,
but also autumn colour, and bark. Clever planting
can also create smaller intimate areas within a
garden, as well as providing protection from sun or
strong winds, as well as creating shape. There is a
tree to fir every space, but do think about your
neighbours!
A Lawn is a great means of creating space in a
garden, but a well maintained lawn can be hard
work, and may not be a good idea if you are looking
for a low maintenance garden.
Always remember that creating a beautiful garden
that suits you and your personality does not
happen overnight. It will take time to mature, and
you always have to think about the future.

Are you feeling intelligent?
I’m worried that the slogan ‘Keep Calm and
Carry On’ is becoming a lifestyle choice! All
that British stiff upper lip and stoicism was
vital during wartime hardship and got the
country back on its feet, but I think it’s a
step too far when applied to relationships.
It doesn’t get relationships back on their
feet- it kills them dead. For relationships to
thrive the opposite needs to happen - we
need to open up and become more
understanding, accepting and intelligent
around emotions. We need to allow space
for vulnerability.
The vulnerability paradox in relationships is
that it is the first thing we want to see in
another - it opens our hearts and makes us
feel closer to them - and yet it’s the last
thing we want to reveal about ourselves as
we fear it will leave us vulnerable to being
hurt.
If we decide we don’t want to feel the bad
stuff our brain receives the message as ‘stop
feeling ‘ and cuts off contact with our
emotions, but the problem is we end up not
feeling the good stuff either. When we
refuse to address the bad feelings inside we
also lose the childlike joy we once had and
then have to work hard to feel anything at all,
seeking more and more stimulants to help us
- alcohol, drugs, shopping , sex. Without full
access to our feelings, we lose our ability to
connect with each other heart to heart. With
no connection , rather than being a place
where we feel loved, inspired and
expansive , relationships become a place
where we hunker down and see our partner
as the enemy trying to take something from
us.
Being comfortable and accepting of
vulnerability also allows a greater intelligence
to emerge - the intelligence of the Heart, the
bonding agent of Love that makes relation-
ships strong and resilient. I have seen many
relationships die because of a refusal to open
up to emotions. Opening up to the
intelligence of emotions can feel risky, it takes
courage and commitment, but when it is met
with empathy, understanding and a willing-
ness to reconnect, you create a safe environ-
ment for love, trust and intimacy to grow.
Don’t just Keep Calm and Carry On in your
relationship, learn to Open Up too! For further information or a chat about this or any other matter, contact Kim Millar on 07789 408378 or email [email protected].

Are you struggling to stop yourself
hibernating in front of the TV with a box
of chocolates now it’s dark so early in the
evenings? Keep those sugar cravings at
bay by paying attention to a few key rules:
• Make sure you’ve eaten enough good
quality nutrient dense food, and your
water intake is at least 1.5 litres - this
will keep your body topped up with
everything it needs and make those
cravings easier to deal with.
• Keep reminding yourself about that
“little black dress you want to wear to
the Christmas party; this will make it
easy to say no to the choccies!
• Get as much sunlight as you possibly
can - topping up your Vitamin D is great
for killing sugar cravings too.

Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of
Attorney are essential documentsAttorney are essential documentsAttorney are essential documentsAttorney are essential documents
Lasting Powers of Attorney: These enable your chosen attorney(s) to
act for you. This could be vital in the event
of accident, illness or frailty in old age.
Otherwise the family can only administer
your affairs through the Court of
Protection. This is a cumbersome and very
expensive process. Getting LPAs in place
means they are there when needed.
It is a lot easier to do these while in our
prime and not expecting incapacity!
Wills: If you do not make a Will your assets will
be distributed by the State.
This often causes hurt and upset in the
family. A Will gives you the opportunity to
provide for those you wish to protect and
to thank those who have been particularly
good to you.
If you do not have a Will: • The State is responsible for minor
children and may not hand them to
guardians you would have chosen.
• The administration of assets will not be
within the control of a trustee who you
have chosen.
• An unmarried partner gets nothing and
may even have to sell the home in order
to hand over an inheritance to distant
family members.
• A married partner only inherits personal
property and £ 250,000 outright, if you
have children. Would this be enough?
• An adult child may inherit and
immediately loose that inheritance in a
divorce.
• Teenage children may inherit at the age
of 18 and acquire the wrong friends, be
hugely distracted from their studies
and perhaps misuse the funds.
• Adult children may inherit equally even
if one of them has been given a large
sum recently. This would be unfair and
could prejudice the relationship
between your children.
• A married spouse may inherit at an
elderly age and then lose everything to
Care Fees.
It is so easy to prevent this happening.
Make a Will.

The Benefits of Hypnotherapy
“You started to smoke. You didn’t like it,
but you persisted and smoking became a
part of your life, so that when you wanted
to stop you found it difficult because your
body had adapted, become addicted, and it
did not understand that you were
stopping”.
The above statement applies to most - if
not all - smokers. Even though they may
take the decision to stop they find it
difficult - because they have become
addicted and it has become a habit. A
habit with all sorts of pleasant associations.
With a drink, with a meal, during a break,
after sex. These things would be pleasant
anyway but somehow - to the smoker,
smoking becomes a necessary part of
them.
Everything we achieve successfully is
preceded by an idea. A holiday is preceded
by the exciting thought of having a holiday.
A visit to the cinema is preceded by
imagining the pleasant experience it will
entail. Yet for many who want to stop
smoking, the thought of being a non
smoker is at best unimaginable, at worst a
fear. No wonder so many fail. They can’t
imagine enjoying a drink as a non smoker,
or enjoying a meal, or enjoying anything
much at all as a non smoker.
People who come to me - to stop smoking
using hypnotherapy - usually stop after one
extended session. During this time the
connection between having a cigarette and
having a pleasant experience is broken -
and an association built up between being
a NON smoker and feeling great - which of
course we all can. And the decision to stop
smoking and become a non smoker is
amplified so that it becomes a belief that:
“yes, I am a non smoker now, because I
took that decision”. And non smokers
don’t smoke. It is very much easier once
you believe you are a non smoker who
doesn’t smoke that to believe you are a
smoker who has had to give up.
If you are on the point of taking the
decision to stop smoking then you may find
that using hypnotherapy to stop will help
you. It amplifies your decision, puts
smoking in the past and allows you to feel
free. Free of the control of smoking that
you will have indeed left in the past.

Whether it’s for a bit of festive romance, frolics
with friends or some family fun, skating on one of
the many outdoor rinks in the UK is an
essential winter experience and a great way to get
some exercise.
Over recent years more and more Winter
Wonderlands have been opening up,
transforming grey city centres and park into fairy
tales with colourful lights, giant Christmas trees
and carols. There’s plenty to do for all ages; cafes,
markets and fairs accompany most rinks and
special sessions are available on the ice for
beginners, tots and the over 55s.
All you need to have a go is some long socks,
gloves, a hat and a warm waterproof jacket—and
extra padding is also good for those finding their
feet (or blades!)
Who can go? You don’t have to be Torvill or Dean
to enjoy a little outdoor skating, but if you are
taking children it helps to have some experience
on the ice as most rinks insist that under 10s are
accompanied by an adult. If you’re thinking of
taking a little one along, do check the rink’s
minimum age beforehand and ensure that the
venue stocks skates in their size. Some operate
mother and toddler sessions and those with
disabilities are often welcome, with wheelchair
access straight onto the ice - but do make sure you
book ahead.
Many ice rinks offer discounted family and group
tickets and for those who don't wish to partake in
the activity there’s nearly always a café on the
sidelines from which you can enjoy the skating
with a mince pie or hot chocolate.
Most are open until early January, but check
individual websites for details.
Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park
Ice Age 4 Ice opens on 23rd November to 6th

this one is exceptional in terms of glamour. The
stunning neoclassical setting and central
location make it one of Britain’s most
impressive ice rinks. Open from 16th
November to 6th January. Visit
www.somersethouse.org.uk/ice-rink or call 020

ber to January 6th. For more information go to
