THE HARTE
FAMILY: By Vincent McAuliffe
ABSTRACT This work was painstakingly compiled by Vincent McAuliffe (1925-1987). After his death it was subsequently updated and published by someone (probably his brother Jackie) to include events up to 1995. I have further cleaned up the text - making corrections where necessary and if possible - while still retaining the flavour of the original author. I have inserted a Table of Contents (ToC) which you can click on to navigate throughout the text, as well as, references to web-based sources. Newer data and information, such as related family trees, is included in footnotes and can be viewed via hyper-links. Comments and corrections are welcome. 1 July 2016 Geneva, Switzerland

Editor’s Preface
This 2016 edition includes a cover photo of Patrick and Mary HARTE (taken
1902). It was discovered by Jan Strong (nee Girouard) and passed on to us by Nancy
Bourque. It also contains newer information on James Patrick Harte and Susan
Flannigan.
It is difficult to know where to begin – or to stop – for that matter. In the original
version, dates of birth, death or marriage, etc., were often given as “circa”, or,
designated simply as “about”. In addition, by page 20 or so, Vincent had frequently
changed the information given earlier, without going back to correct the introductory
pages. (This is understandable as he did not have a computer.) Since even newer
evidence has now given us precise dates, I have attempted to correct these
inconsistencies; but contradictions still remain (and perhaps cannot be entirely avoided).
Many sections were repetitious (which I have tried to edit) and some families are dealt
with in greater detail than others, a fact which I cannot completely set right. However, I
have attempted to compensate by including related family trees in the various footnotes
which can be accessed via hyper-links to Free Family Tree, Genealogy and Family
History - MyHeritage.com. Other footnotes are used to confirm or elaborate historical
events mentioned by Vincent. Obviously it was an unfinished work, but one for which we
can all be grateful.
This edited version makes no pretense at being a scientific genealogical study
with birth certificates or attestations to back up every point. Rather it is an edited version
of what Vincent had been able to collect and record and is best perhaps described as
“oral history” backed up by documentation as available at the time to him, but not
accessible in full to me. Before a final version is published, this limited edition, beta
version, is posted for comments. Much work still remains to be done in terms of
consistency of style, formatting and verification of information.
My thanks go to: Jennifer Hodges for finding Maureen West from New Zealand
(leading us to the Maguire Family tree); Sandy Henshall (for finding the grave stone of
Wm. Ralph Bailey, his WWI record, the Connors family in Cleveland 1880, etc.); Laura
Hodges (for the military record of David Bailey in WWII); Nancy Bourque (for the
Harte’s in Montreal and the headstones in St. Michael’s Cemetery); Maureen Melong
(for her early memories of Long Branch and before) and her son Greg; Peter Bailey (for
finding the photos of Vincent McAuliffe at the City of Toronto Archives, historical
footnotes and street addresses, both in Toronto and Cleveland); Mary Ellen Walsh (for
various hand-written notes of Vincent); Norma Haill for invaluable information; Denise
Furgiuele for finding the voyage of the Hart’s to Canada in 1883; Rita, Helen, Kathy
and Loretta Bailey for photos and their memories. Special thanks go to Fred Bennett and
his wife Pamela for having salvaged a major portion of Vincent’s archive with
invaluable information on the Hart(e)’s early days in North America, including an
interview with Irene O’Grady; plus, all those who have posted their own family websites.
Information on the arrival of the Hart(e)s in North America, additional
information from US and Canadian Census reports, Annex VIII with photos of readily-
available family headstones (including Wm. (Bill) Connors in Leubringhen (France,
2014) and a few family trees (Annex IX) were already incorporated in the 2015 edition.

Where it all began: Four Harte’s from Sligo
The cast of characters:
Patrick (b. 1849 – died 1903 in Toronto, great-grandfather);
Peter, his brother (b. between 1852 and 1861- died 1918 in Dayton, Ohio);
Lizzie, a possible sister (b. 1860 - died 1904 in Geneva, NY) ?; and
Ellen (Mrs. Collins), a sister (b. between 1861 and 1869 - died 1938 in Toronto).
Until 8 March 2014, almost everything we knew about Patrick Harte’s brother
and sister(s) was what Vincent McAuliffe wrote in the Harte Family History:
Records indicate that both Patrick and Mary Harte (nee Rowlette) were from County
Sligo, Ireland. Other records tend to confirm this as their place of origin. Patrick's
brother, Peter, served in the infantry of the United States Army from 1884 to 1904.
His military records give the same place of origin, as do papers relating to his sister
Ellen (Mrs. Collins).
As of 9 March 2014 we have: 3 photos of Peter Harte in uniform, a voucher for
Ellen Collins (his sister) and her husband Thomas to sail from Glasgow to Geneva (New
York State), in 1897 on the Anchor Line; a letter from Peter to Ellen Collins in 1916; the
Last Will and Testament of a Lizzie Harte who lived in Geneva, NY; death notices for
Peter Hart; and, a photo of his headstone in Dayton, Ohio.
Most of this came to me courtesy of Fred Bennett who is married to Pam (nee
Murray), daughter of James and Helen Murray. Helen’s mother was Irene O’Grady (nee
Harte). In 1987 Vincent in a section entitled a “Shoe box of family history”, wrote:
If two or three related family members worked as a team, the job would be easier and
quicker. There will be disappointments … There will be rewards also, when an unlikely
source provides information, you considered lost. It is much like a jigsaw puzzle, trying
to fit the pieces together, without having all the pieces ... and may you have good fortune
and a full shoe box.
… little did he know how prophetic he would be - the shoe box we found was his own!
Previously, all we knew was that Ellen Collins (nee Harte) was buried in Toronto
in the same plot as Francis Vincent Connors, his wife Ellen Margaret Connors (nee
Harte) and of recently, one of their daughters, Mary Josephine Connors (1912-2007).
See photo. Vincent also implied that he had more documents, but we don’t have access
to them.
We now have the marriage certificate for Thomas and Ellen Collins dated 18 Sept. 1893 in Glasgow.
The scan of the pre-paid ticket voucher could well indicate that by 1897, either
Peter Hart or a certain Lizzie Harte1 had enough money to invite their sister (Ellen) and
1 Who was Lizzie? Her name was found amongst the Vincent McAuliffe collection plus her Last Will and Testament, dated 1894 in Geneva, NY. Elsewhere, Vincent notes that she possibly died in 1904.

husband (Thomas Collins) over to New York State2. They sailed from Glasgow. Was Mr.
Collins perhaps Scottish? Or, did they work there as Patrick Harte did before coming to
Canada? As we now know, Patrick Harte and family came to Canada in 1883. According
to Vincent, his brother Peter was in the US army by 1884. We have a photo of Ellen
Margaret Harte (future Mrs. Francis Connors) taken with a group of ladies in Buffalo in
the early 1900’s. A copy of the picture showing the name and address of the
photographer can be seen on p. 14 (below). Maybe Ellen Collins (or even Lizzie) is one
of them as a resemblance has been noted?
Ellen Margaret Harte (Mrs. Connors, our maternal grandmother) was born in
1874 and her aunt, also Ellen Harte (Mrs. Collins) was born only five years earlier in
1869 (or 1866 according to her marriage certificate). In any event she is buried in
Toronto with the Francis Connors family. Her last know residence was 88 Curzon with
Mae McAuliffe. I have found no obit for a Mr. Collins in the Toronto newspapers, so
maybe he passed away in New York State. There is also letter addressed to Ellen Collins
in New York State from Peter Harte in 1916 while he is at Hampton Veteran’s Hospital,
Virginia. She was notified of his death from TB at a soldiers’ home in Ohio in 1918.
Hospital records indicate her as next of kin with addresses in Cortland, Ontario County,
NY, as does the 1892 US Census.
However, the 1921 Canadian Census which I have just discovered shows her
living with Aunt Mae McAuliffe, her husband, new-born Jackie (4 months), and Harry
Harte and his first wife. It also indicates that she is a widow and immigrated in 1912
already. How do we explain letters addressed to her in the US up to 1918? Perhaps she
commuted or the letters were forwarded to her. The McAuliffe's are listed in the Census,
but transcribed as Mc Chetteffe. Jackie's age is given as 4/12 (ie, 4 months old) which is
correct. Two Harte's were also listed, but transcribed as "Harle". I have submitted a
request for corrections. Ellen Collins was also there. All were living at 59 Cannon St.
(which is noted in the Vincent text).
The Census lists John McAuliffe, his wife Mary (Aunt Mae) and son Jack. Then
Aunt Mae's "brother" Harry Harte3. His first wife "Maria" is listed as US-born (Vincent
says in Chicago), speaking French, with parents born in Que. This corresponds with what
Vincent wrote about her maiden name being perhaps Bourgeois and not Dooley. In any
event, her age is 22 while Harry is 37. She apparently had just immigrated in 1921. She
died two years later in 19234. He earned $1200 in 1921 as a Conductor. (According to
Vincent, Harry died in 1939 in Chicago.)
John McAuliffe's occupation is given as a "Moring Lutine". I have not had time
to look it up but it must be another spelling mistake. Vincent and Jackie say their father
owned the LaReta cinema, maybe his occupation was related to that.
Of course the main find was the mysterious "Aunt" Ellen Collins which Denise
had already pointed out. The saga continues. Ellen Collins, according to the 1921
2 Of course we don’t know who sent Thomas and Ellen Collins a pre-paid ticket voucher. But, Lizzie lived in Geneva and had made a Will in 1894.The voucher was for travel to Geneva in 1897. Why would it be stored in a box with other material related to her, Ellen and Peter Harte for over 100 years which belonged to Vincent McAuliffe’s archives unless she was related and possibly a sister? 3 Henry Joseph “Harry” was the first of the Harte’s to be born after arrival in Toronto. 4 Harry then married Madelaine Kormann and had one son, John Peter Harte.

Census, had apparently immigrated in 1912 (but got letters from the US Army
concerning her brother Peter Harte, in 1916 and 1918 addressed to her in Cortland, NY).
She is listed as being a widow. Maybe she travelled back-and-forth. Maybe the letters
were forwarded. In any event she appears to have lived with Aunt Mae until her death in
1938. Her age of 60 on the Census would mean she was born in 1861; so her age on the
headstone should perhaps read “77” years and not 69.
According to two records and a letter from the Army, Peter Hart died on 4 April
1918 - at T.A.P.S.5 - in the National Military Home in Jefferson Township, Montgomery
County, Ohio (today - the Dayton VA Medical Center) and he is buried at the Dayton
National Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. There is a headstone which
reads “Peter Hart, Co. H., 14 US Inf.” We have scans and photos to back all this up.
(Note: they were all originally Hart’s without an “e”. Someone added it to the name later
in Canada, although the mysterious Lizzie Harte already used it.)
One of the military photos (the oldest) shows Peter Harte as a Corporal, the one
taken in Manila (1899-1900 with Spanish text) looks more like kaki army fatigues. The
Spanish-American war was 1898-99 and then the US fought the Filipinos for a couple of
years. In the end the US got Cuba (and still has Guantanamo), The Philippines, Puerto
Rica and Guam, etc. He apparently spent time on-and-off in the Army over a period of
20 years. The third photo shows him wearing perhaps a medal. I had looked a bit at
Ancestry.com and LDS before, but there were so many Hart(e)’s and immigration and
naturalization records that I gave up, until we suddenly got lucky.
So how did I get the three photos, the travel voucher, letter of 1916 and marriage
certificate of 1893? Pamela Bennett had managed to re-connect with the Greer’s (Loretta
was the sister of Jackie and Vincent) after all these years. Donna Greer was clearing out
her basement and came across a box which was probably inherited from Vincent
McAuliffe. She managed to luckily salvage some of the contents which Fred then
scanned.
5 Apparently, coming from Holland where they would blow the bugle at sunset to signal to the bars that it was time to turn off the beer “taps” and send the troops back to their barracks.

The trip to Canada in 1883
Denise Furgiuele (nee Connors) has kindly provided the following information.
According to the ship’s manifest (see pdf next page), the Sarmatian (Allan Line
Steamship Co.) sailed from Liverpool on 17 May 1883, stopping at Londonderry (now
Derry) the next day, 18 May, to pick up the following passengers (presumably our
ancestors as the names and dob, more-or-less, match our other available records and
information): Name Age Destination Apparent Other birth Birth date records Patrick Hart 36 Toronto 1847 1849 Mary “ 31 “ 1852 1854 Patrick “ 11 “ 1872 1872 Ellen “ 9 “ 1874 1874 John “ 6 “ 1877 1878 Annie “ 1 “ 1882 1882
Patrick Hart is recorded as it looks like a “Labo” = Labourer? The S.S. Sarmatian
arrived in Quebec City some 10 days later on 27/28 May 1883. The family had through
tickets to Toronto. They were recorded as Hart and not as Harte.
This information coincides well with Vincent McAuliffe’s account that Aunt Annie
(Dolan) was an “infant in arms” when she came over (born 1882). The next child, Henry
Joseph (Harry) Harte, was born in 1884 in Toronto (died 1939).
Wikipedia provides information on the Allan Line and the cost of a typical fare. Peter has
found a water colour of The Sarmatian (see next page). The Sarmatians were an
Iranian people of the classical antiquity period, flourishing from about the 5th century
BC to the 4th century AD. They spoke Scythian language, an Indo-European language
from the Eastern Iranian family.

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Line_Royal_Mail_Steamers lists through
fares (ca 1890) from Londonderry to Toronto from £7 4/1 for Intermediate Class to £4
18/1 for Steerage Class (enlarge poster). Children under 12 half fare; under 1 free. A
qualified surgeon is on board to attend to the needs of women and children. The
Sarmatian is listed. You had to rent a kit with a fork and spoon, etc. Return tickets were
available at a reduced rate - but I doubt if anyone was interested.

incomplete, inaccurate?). It is being included here as it provides information on
employment, dwellings and work engaged in by members of the Harte Family on arrival.
Patrick and Mary immigrated to Toronto Canada about 1882, with their children; the
youngest then born was Anna, an infant in arms. [In fact, they immigrated in 1883.] Four
other children were born after their arrival in Toronto6, including my mother, Mrs. John
Joseph McAuliffe, nee Mary Jane Harte (1886-1959) also known as Aunt May or “Mae”.
From mother I learned that the Harte family moved in with another family known to
them, until obtaining their own place of residence. Patrick had various work apparently.
One was with the GTR (Grand Trunk Railway) in the baggage room. This work was said
to have caused his rheumatism that caused him to use a cane for walking in later years.
It was said the man would be in and out of the ice house, whether for relief from the heat
or other purposes I know not.
Patrick is said to have taken out a horse car during a strike of the street railway workers.
He was stoned by strikers and returned the car promptly to the barns. If this is true, it
would be 1892, when local history records such a strike7. The Street railway ceased using
horses about 1893-1895 when electric cars came into use. An interesting book entitled
The Methodist Bicycle Company8 deals with this period of Toronto history.
It is also said Patrick was something of a private tutor. If so, I would assume he taught
children, at home, on a part time basis. Perhaps slow learners or children that had missed
regular schooling due to an illness that put them behind the rest of the class.
Patrick’s wife, Mary, was said to be most solicitous of his health, warming his gloves
and the handle of his cane, before he went outside on cold days.
I had made a list (now misplaced) of the addresses where the Harte family lived. From
memory I list three:
76 ½ Markham.
4 Stanley Terrace, facing Stanley Park (during 1914, the year Mary Harte died).
543 King Street West (or 643 or 632?) which was a very large brick house with a brick driving shed or stable in the rear yard. It had for many
(years?) belonged to a medical doctor. Mary Harte wanted the property
6 It would appear that at least three children were born in Scotland. It is unclear where Ellen Margaret was born and there is no mention of where the two who died in infancy were born. Anna, it is now known, was born in Ireland. That meant that they came to Canada with five children and another four were born here. 7 There was indeed a strike of the trainmen and conductors of the Canadian Pacific Railway from 16-23 March 1892 which also drew in the Grand Trunk. See the Globe and Mail, 21 March 1892. 8 However, the Sabbatarian’s were opposed to these street cars running on Sundays and won civic plebiscites on this issue in 1892 and 1893. Ironically, they opposed the very streetcars which would have transported the church-goers to their religious services! (They were also opposed to tobogganing on Sundays.) In a close referendum vote in 1897, streetcars were finally allowed to run on Sundays. See C. Armstrong and H.V. Nelles: The Revenge of the Methodist Bicycle Company, Peter Martin Associates Limited, 1977.

(Harte?) (Henry?), John, Harry and George were also employed in railway

This last King Street property could have been bought for $3000.00. The price seemed
excessive to Mary, as ordinary houses were selling for much less at the time. The house
and lot was sold to ______?? Mel.____Pills company_______who occupied the premises
for many years. It is said the stable at the rear was sold for $3000.00 some years after
the Harte’s vacated the property. The house and stable were demolished. The site is now
occupied by the Executive Motor Hotel.
It may have been the King St. house where Aunt Annie (1882-1978) is said to have
curtained off a portion of a room, hung an electric light bulb from a string to impress her
friends. The house was actually illuminated by gas.
My mother was most upset, to see Mary Harte (her mother) having a nap, using several
kitchen chairs placed together for a bed. Mother also told of a grocery store operated by
her mother, Mary Harte. (The grocery store of the Harte’s could have been on Mitchell
Ave. in the Queen Bathurst streets area, as were most of the Harte family homes.) There
was a book in our home listing the debts owed by the store’s customers. The
whereabouts of the book is now unknown to me.
The death of her son, John Dominic, at age 34 years (in 1912) was a severe blow to Mary
Harte who was so well acquainted with hard work and hard times. John’s death is said to
have been a factor in Mary’s death in 1914. Mary Harte is said to have dearly loved one
of her grandsons. This grandson Charlie Connors (1908-1994) could add much to the
history of the Harte family, as could his brothers and sisters.

St. Michael’s Cemetery: Related Information
A guided tour offered on 12 July and 9 August 2015 gave many relatives an opportunity not only to visit the cemetery (usually locked), but also to meet each other for the first time. As a minimum, Norma Hail and Sandy Henshall met on 12 July. The photo taken on 12 August records (l to r) Nancy Bourque, her brother Garry Costigan, Carrie Mitro, Rita Penner and her brother Peter Bailey posing above the two Harte stones (Annex IX).

The Harte Family Plot at St Michael's Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, is located at the rear of the store lots, on the west side of Yonge St., south of St. Clair Ave. The entrance to the cemetery which can be seen from Yonge St. is on an open lot (about 25 feet wide). The entrance is on the rear property line of the adjoining lots facing on Yonge St. It is about one city block south of St. Clair Ave.
SEE GOOGLE EARTH PHOTO OF CEMETERY ON NEXT PAGE
The Harte Plot is lot 134 w on the north side of St. Michael's Rd. that starts at the
entrance gate, running west to the crypt. The Harte plot is about 26 paces west of the entrance gate. It is the first or second plot north of the roadway. It was originally marked with a bronze marker (now two stones), lying flat on the ground bearing five names9:
Patrick Harte. Died 12 January 1903, age 54 years. His newspaper obit reads “Native of Sligo Ireland”.
Mary S. Harte. Died 14 August 1914, age about 60. Widow of Patrick of
Rosslere, Parish of Calry, County of Sligo. Ireland.
James Patrick Harte. Son of Patrick and Mary (nee Rowlette) Harte. Born 3 March 1872, at Govan (?) Glasgow, Scotland. Married Susan Flanigan (born 1879 in Canada). Died at Toronto Canada, 9 March 1922. Father of Mary Agnes (Mrs. John Palmer); Irene (Mrs. Norman O'Grady); James Patrick, husband of Ann Bryant (the name of her first husband).
John Dominic Harte. Son of Patrick and Mary (nee Rowlette) Harte. Born 19
November 1876, at 68 Munro St., Glasgow, County of Lanark, Scotland. Baptised 4 December 1876, District of Rollose, Glasgow, Scotland. Died 9 June 1912, at Toronto, Canada. As a result of a fall from a railway car, in the Bathurst Yards, while employed by the Grand Trunk Railway, a newspaper account of the accident reads10:
A Grand Trunk Railway brakeman, living at 7 Rebecca St., slipped and fell between two cars at the Bathurst St. Yards. One truck passed over his arm. Then the poor chap managed to wiggle clear of the tracks, when he was found he was taken to Grace Hospital. He had a severe scalp wound, fractured right arm, injured back and his left hand lacerated; he was unconscious from the time he was picked up till he died at the hospital in the evening. John was 34 years of age and a bachelor.
Catherine Evelyn (Eva) Harte. Daughter of Patrick and Mary (nee Rowlette)
Harte. Born 29 April 1891 at Toronto. Died in April 1901, at Toronto, age 9 years. Cause of death Tubercular Meningitis.
Also buried in the plot, but not listed on marking plaque:
Annie Genevieve Connors. Daughter of Francis Vincent and Ellen (nee Harte) Connors. Died 26 January 1914, age about 3 years, a granddaughter of Patrick and Mary (nee Rowlette) Harte.
9 Currently available photos (see Annex IX) show two stones; one for Patrick Harte and his wife Mary Rowlette; and, the other with James, John and Eva Harte. 10 The Toronto Daily Star headline of Monday, 10 June 1912 reads: “A G.T.R. brakeman jolted to death”. The Inquest report stated: « A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquiry into the death of John Hart, G.T.R. yard man who was killed Sunday last.” The Toronto Daily Star, 14 March, p. 5. Note: He – like so many - is recorded as Hart without and “e”.

St. Michael’s Cemetery tucked away at Yonge and St Clair The family plot was purchased about 1901, with the final payment made 26 October
1914, by Henry Joseph (Harry) Harte, another son of Patrick and Mary Harte. Burial plots were paid for in dribs and drabs, spread over many years, in amounts from 50 cents to $1.00 or $2.00. And then, possibly only after frequent reminders.
Prior to 1901, Plot 134 N (or West?), and possibly adjoining plots, was used for a
priest’s burial plot. The priests formerly buried there were removed to Mount Hope Cemetery, when that cemetery was opened. The above information is compiled from various sources that I have gathered, over a considerable period of years. No claim to complete accuracy is made.
Background information
Records indicate that both Patrick and Mary Harte were from County Sligo, Ireland. Other records tend to confirm this as their place of origin. Patrick's brother, Peter, served in the infantry of the United States Army from 1884 to 1904. His military records give the same place of origin, as do papers relating to his sister Ellen (Mrs. Collins11).
However, economic circumstances forced many Irish people to leave Ireland to seek employment in other lands. The Harte’s tended to go to Scotland, where the women got work as domestic servants. The men worked as farm laborers, brick salesmen or any job they could get. Perhaps their plan was to get enough money to purchase ocean fare to America. Perhaps they did not want to go far from Ireland, for some of Patrick and Mary's children were born in Glasgow, Scotland, others in Ireland. It appears they went

home to Ireland from time to time. Anna, known as Aunt Annie, a daughter of Patrick and Mary, was born in Ireland and came to Canada as an infant in arms.
This indicates that the family immigrated to Canada in 1883 (as we now know. See above). My mother, nee Mary Jane Harte (1886-1959) (aka Aunt Mae) was born in Toronto. From her I heard about her parent’s first residence in Toronto in some friend’s home, whose name I never learned. It is very likely they soon rented a house when circumstances permitted. One of Patrick’s jobs was in the baggage room of the G.T.R., where it was said on hot days he would seek relief in the ice house. This was claimed to be the cause of his Rheumatism. That shortened his working years. I doubt this was the cause, for many of his descendants suffered the same complaint, though it was later more fashionable to have Arthritis, rather than Rheumatism.
Patrick was also said to be a teacher. I expect he gave private lessons to children whose schooling had been interrupted by the many illnesses that afflicted children in those times. The Harte's also had a grocery store once, but due to unpaid bills owing them, that did not last long. From what I have learned about those times it seems that running a boarding house was their most successful venture and space does not allow for more to be shown12.

and his two daughters are found back in Toronto, living with his parents according to the
1901 Canadian Census. A fourth child, William James is registered in 1902 to James
Harte and Susan Flannigan in York County, Toronto – no mention was ever made of him.
2. Ellen Margaret (1874 – 1932) - born circa 1874, place uncertain (most probably Scotland), married Francis Vincent Connors (1880-1937), at St. Mary's Church, Toronto,
Canada in 1906. He was from Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. Their children: John William,
circa 1906-1944, husband of Ann Townend; Charles, 13 July 1908-27 March 1994
husband of (1) Alexina Bouchier, died 1949, (2) Emily Katherine Keough, died 1975;
Genevieve, circa 1910 – 26 January 1914, age 3 years 5 months; Mary Josephine, 1912 -
2007; Henry Joseph, 18 January 1914 – 28 April 1991, married Rita (Loraine) Brockman;
Francis James, circa 1915 – 27 December 1990, husband of Olive Wilson; Helen
Veronica, 1917 – 1998, wife of David Bailey (6 January 1922 - 15 November 1979).
3. William John (1875 – 1876) - born 27 August 1875, at 88 Langlands Rd., Govan. Baptized District of Govan Church, Lanark County, Scotland, 15 September 1875. Died 24 January 1876.
4. John Dominic (1876 – 1912) - born 19 November 1876 at 68 Munro St., Glasgow, Scotland. Baptized December 4, District of St. Rollose, Glasgow, Scotland. Died a bachelor, 9 June 1912, from a fall from a railway car at Toronto's Bathurst St. rail yards. Buried in Plot 134, St. Michael's Cemetery, Toronto (see above).
5. Mary Agnes (1880 – 1880) - Died in infancy.
6. Joseph (circa 1881 – 1881) - Died in infancy.
7. Anna (1882 – 1978) - born 26 January 1882 in Sligo, Ireland and baptized on 1 February 1892. She would have been an infant in arms, when the family moved to Canada14. She was married twice: (1) William Cairns (d. 1935); and, (2) Patrick Dolan (d. 1949). Dates and places unknown to Vincent, but since updated. She had one daughter to her first husband - Marie Cairns (Mrs. William Kierans). Anna died 9 June 1978 in her 97th year at Simcoe, Ontario. She is buried in Notre-Dame-Des-Neiges Cemetery, Montreal, Quebec in the plot with her second husband.
8. Henry Joseph “Harry” (1884 - 1939) - Born 1884 at Toronto, Ontario. Baptism would have been at St. Mary's Church. Married twice: (1) to Anna Dooley, some claim her name was Anna Bourgeois15; and (2) Madelaine Kormann16, dates and places unknown. One son by his second wife, John Peter, born circa 1925 – 28 April 1991. Harry died at Chicago, IL, 12 Sept. 1939. He was found dead on a Chicago street and it being depression time nobody had the money to bring him to Toronto, so he was buried in Potters Field in same city. Some claim his death was falsified, that he was seen by old railroaders in 1941. (I cannot confirm or deny the claim). 9. Mary Jane “May” (1886 - 1959) - born 24 June 1886, at Toronto, Canada. Baptized 4 July1886 at St. Mary's Church, Toronto, Ontario. Married to John Joseph McAuliffe (1887-1951). Died 23 July 1959 at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Toronto, of cancer. Their children: John Daniel 1921-2002; Mary Loretta 1923; and, Vincent Henry
14 This confirmation comes from Nancy Bourque who has a communication dated 11 April 1952. Vincent McAuliffe had merely recorded that Annie Harte was believed to have been born in Ireland. This would also indicate that the family emigrated in 1883 as her brother Harry was born in Toronto in 1884. We have now found the passenger ship they arrived on, the S.S. Sarmatian, in 1883. See Annex VI. 15 The 1921 Census indicates that her parents were from Quebec. 16 Vincent records the name as “Korman”. Later it was changed to Chorman.

1925-1987.
10. George Shaver (1888 – 1960) - born 1888, exact date not known, at Toronto, Canada. Baptism would be at St. Mary's Church. Married Ethel Vaughan, at Toronto, date unknown who died in 1928, leaving George with five young daughters. Their children: Eileen circa 1920; Margaret, born 1921, who died circa 1941, as result of an automobile/train accident, while returning from a wedding practice (her own wedding); Helen, birth date unknown; Anne Catherine, born circa 1923 – 23 June 1978; Theresa Lorraine 1926-1973.
11. Catherine Evelyn “Eva” (1891 – 1901) - born 28 April 1891, at Toronto, Ontario. Died, 26 January 1901, at Toronto, Ontario. Cause of death, Tubercular Meningitis. Buried in Plot 134, at St. Michael's Cemetery, Toronto (but un-marked, see above).
1. James Patrick Harte and Susan Flannigan
Not much was known to Vincent about James Patrick Harte and his wife Susan other than
what is listed under section I.1 above. From what was stated by Vincent, both appear to
have died on 9 March 1922 in Toronto (which we now know to be incorrect)17.
Today, we know more. They were, for example, listed in Cuyahoga County18, Cleveland,
Ohio in the 1900 US Census (immigration 1898) with their three children. Then, the next
year, James and his two daughters are found back in Toronto, living with his parents
according to the 1901 Canadian Census. A previously unknown fourth child, William
James is registered to James Harte and Susan Flannigan in York County, Toronto in 1902.
James’ profession in the US Census was “Guilder” which in Canada is known as a picture
frame gilder.
II. Their children
1.1 Mary Agnes Harte and John Palmer Mary Agnes Harte – was born 17 September 1895, at 50 Mitchell St., Toronto, Ontario. She was the daughter of James Harte (1872-1922) and Susan Flannigan. She is a sister of Irene (Mrs. Norman O'Grady) 1897-1992 and James 1899 – 1987(?). She died 11 March 1974, at Toronto, Ontario and is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Thornhill, Ontario. Married December 17, 1917, at Gospel Tabernacle, possibly in Hamilton, Ontario to: John Palmer – He is believed to have been born in England. Date and place unknown.
He lost a leg while in the army during World War I. He died at Toronto, Ontario, date
17 The Death notice in the Toronto Star of 10 March simply states « HARTE – On Thursday, 9 March, James P., eldest son of the late Patrick and Mary Harte, formerly of St. Mary’s parish, died in his 50th year. Funeral, Saturday, 11 March at 9 a.m. from the home of his sister Mrs. F. Connors, 29 Hemlock Avenue near Kingston road to Corpus Christi Church. Interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery.” (Note: No mention is made of his wife Susan, nor where he himself last resided.) 18 This raises interesting questions as the family of Francis Vincent Connors were also from Cuyahoga County. Might they have met? An entry in the Might Directory shows Francis Connors living in the same boarding house in Toronto ca. 1904 as his future wife Ellen Harte!

A hand-written note by Vincent indicates he may possibly have been born near Detroit,
Michigan on 17 December 1899. Do we have more today? Yes, we do!
The 1901 US Census says he was born in Ohio and was five months old by May or June
of that year. I believe he is “Jimmie” Harte? He died 7 Oct. 1987 and was married to Ann
Bryant (name from a previous marriage). Mary Ellen has a photo of him and Charles

Recently an entry was found for York County listing a William James born to James
Harte and Susan Flannigan in 1902. Interestingly, the “e” in Harte was very visibly
added afterwards. No mention was ever made of this person before.

family visits have identified other descendants. See the Connors Clan in Cleveland (CCC) in Annex VI and Time Line Annex XI. More recently a Charles “Chuck” Connors, III, has been identified, still living in Cleveland. A number of websites in the US seem to record descendants of his siblings which will require further research and verification. Note: It would seem that the name was also recorded as “Conner(s)” in the 1880 Census! Another website is by Sarah Kurtz. 21 Buried with his wife Ellen Margaret, Ellen Collins (sister of Patrick Harte) and Mary Josephine Connors (a daughter, 1914-2007) 22 Calais Canadian War Cemetery, Leubringhen (France). 23 See the Melong Web Site - MyHeritage.com.

7. Anna Harte and (1) William Cairns (2) Patrick Dolan
Anna Harte – was born 26 Jan 1882 in Calry Parish, Rosslere, CountySligo, Ireland. Daughter of Patrick Harte and Mary Rowlette. She would have been brought to Canada as an infant in arms (see Annex). Sister of James Patrick, 1872-1922; Ellen Margaret 1874-1932 (Mrs. Frank Vincent Connors); William John Aug .27.1875-Jan. 24,1877; John Dominic 1876-1912; Mary Agnes 1880-1880; Joseph c. 1881-1881; Henry Joseph 1884-1939; Mary Jane 1886-1959; (Mrs. John Joseph McAuliffe); George Shaver 1888-1967; Catherine Evelyn 1891-1901.
She died June 9, 1978, at Simcoe, Ontario. She is buried at Notre-Dame-Des-Neiges Cemetery, Montreal, Quebec (buried on 19 June in Section: GA Lot: 05605), in a plot with her second husband Patrick Dolan.

(1) to William George P. Cairns. Records show their marriage on 9 Feb. 1907 in Toronto. Buried 19 Feb. 1935 at Notre-Dame-Des-Neiges Cemetery, Montreal, Quebec (Section: M Lot: 01712)29. I have little knowledge of William Cairns, other than he died when his only child was about 12 years of age or possibly younger30. I once heard he died of some tropical disease, contacted when he worked in the construction of the Panama Canal. One child of this marriage, “Marie” (Mrs. William Kierans), born 21 Sept. 1904, the mother of: Anne Marie; Dawn; William.
(2) to Patrick Dolan. Buried 16 Dec. 1949 at Notre-Dame-Des-Neiges, Montreal, Quebec (Section: GA Lot: 05605). Know little of Patrick Dolan. He was an employee in the freight section of a railroad, at Montreal during the summer and in St. John, New Brunswick during the winter. Their residence was at Beaconsfield, Quebec. Died [1950?]. No children of this marriage, but see below.
Aunt Annie in her later years ran a boarding house during the summer at Beaconsfield. Uncle George and the Harte girls helped, by working for her. In winter she had a place in Montreal, Quebec. In her last years lived with relatives and friends. She was in a home at Simcoe in poor health when she passed away in 1978.
7.1 Marie Kierans - (Mrs. William Kierans31, nee Cairns) was born Sept. 12, circa 1905-1906. Records show her name as Mary Josephine Cairns born 21 Sept. 1904. She is the
mother of: Anne Marie; Dawn; William.
Note: After the death of Ethel Harte (nee Vaughan) the three daughters of Uncle George
(Harte), lived with Aunt Annie all year; in Beaconsfield, in the summer and in Montreal,
in the winter. Margaret, Anne and Theresa were raised by Aunt Annie. Eileen and Helen
Harte the other two daughters of George and Ethel (nee Vaughan) Harte, lived with Marie
Kierans, the daughter of Aunt Annie (nee Harte) (1) Mrs. William Cairns and (2) Mrs.
Patrick Dolan.

8. Henry Joseph “Harry” Harte and (1) Anna Dooley (2) Madelaine Korman
Henry Joseph Harte – was born 1884 at Toronto, Canada, son of Patrick Harte (c.
1849-1903) and Mary Rowlette.
He was married twice:
1) - Anna Dooley (b. in Chicago?), died ca.1923 at Toronto, Ontario. No more
information. The 1921 Census indicates that Harry and his wife were living with Aunt
Mae McAuliffe. It confirms that she was born in the US and that her parents were from
Quebec, hence her maiden name might have been Bourgeois.
2) - Madelaine Korman32 (Toronto, 1903-1962), married ca. 1923, possibly at St.
Patrick's Church, Toronto, Ont.
“Harry” as he was called had a troubled marriage that ended in a separation. He was
29 It would appear that he is buried in a Cairns family plot with 4 others. 30 This statement cannot be true. Look at the dates. If he died in 1935 and his daughter was born in 1905, that would have made her 20 when he died, not 12. (However, it does say he was buried in 1935; not died in 1935.) 31 There is somehow a connection to the politician and academic Eric Kierans. 32 The name was originally probably “Kormann” and later even changed to Chorman.

U.S.A. September 12, 1939 and buried in Potters Field. The reason for the burial there
was no money to bring him back to Toronto, because of lack of funds as the depression
was on, and nobody had a job33.
8.1 John Peter was born ca. 1925 died April 28, 1991. He married Norma Grace Hyatt (b. 1931) in 1952 at St. John's Chapel in St. Michael’s Cathedral, Toronto Ontario. They
had four children Peter, Alix, Michael (deceased) and Paul. Their marriage ended in a
divorce.
Norma remarried Graeme Haill August 17, 1978.
9. Mary Jane “May” Harte and John Joseph McAuliffe Mary Jane Harte – was born 24 June 1886, at Toronto, Ontario, daughter of Patrick Harte (c. 1849-1903), and Mary Rowlette (ca. 1854-1914). She was baptized, July 4, 1886 at St. Mary's Church, Toronto, Ontario. Sister of James P.1871-1903, Ellen Margaret (Mrs. Francis V. Brother of Mary (Lowe) 1861-1947, Daniel Joseph 1889-1889, Daniel Patrick 19 August 1895-196234 and Bridget 1897- 15 September 1897. He died April 9, 1951, at Toronto in his home at 180 Jones Ave., Toronto, Ontario. Buried initially buried in the McAuliffe Plot in St. Michael's Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario. Later his remains were exhumed and reburied in Holy Cross Cemetery, Thornhill, Ontario with his wife.
THEIR CHILDREN
9.1 John Daniel - born January 28, 1921, at Toronto, Ontario, Baptized at St. Joseph's Church, Toronto, Ontario. Married 3 April 1961, at St. John's Chapel, Toronto, Ontario to May Blades, born 3 November 1923, daughter of Arthur H. and Elsie (nee Pollard) Blades, at Retford Notts. England. No children. Jack died on 15 November 2002 and his wife on 21 May 2009. Both are buried in Beaverton. See Annex VIII.
“Jack” was the name used in his adult years but as a child and teenager was called Jackie. He was born 28 January 1921 as the son of John Joseph and Mary Jane McAuliffe. They resided over the LaReta Theatre35 where my father owned and operated the show. The next move was to 23 Badgerow Ave. Then to 49 Cannon Ave (it is now called Gainsborough Ave., a nicer name or so the neighbours thought). They lost the house to the financial causes (unemployment). The next moves were rental places. Moved to Belhaven Rd. from where I started school, Corpus Christi on
33 As mentioned earlier in the text there were unconfirmed sightings of him in 1941. 34 Daniel Patrick McAuliffe (1895-1962) was not mentioned in the original manuscript and service in the Army has been found. He died in Fort William, Pontiac, Quebec in 1962. 35 The LaReta was a cinema at 336 Pape Street. It was closed in 1955 as a consequence of the advent of television.

Edgewood Ave. Did from Junior First to Senior Third, there was no Kindergarten in the Separate System then. We moved to 1440 Gerrard St. East next, finished the third grade by then. Since money was scarce and the landlord wanted his money we had to move to 180 Jones Ave. We were enrolled in St. Joseph's School and finished Junior and Senior Fourth.
Our next move was not my family's fault. The landlady Mrs. O'Connor found out we were of the catholic faith and therefore a move was necessary. Then, it was on to 88 Curzon St. I then went to De La Salle High School. Completed First and Second Form. Took two years bookkeeping at Eastern High School as I had a chance to become a bookkeeper where a cousin worked. The war came along, and both my cousin Bill Connors and his boss enlisted - and my chance went too.
I did a year at Danforth Technical School taking Machine Shop. I actually worked two days at Coulter Copper and Brass. The equipment was outdated dangerous. As to work, I was a paper boy, delivery boy at Walmsley's Fish And Chips, Littlejohn's Drug Store, Rumball's Drug Store, Owl Drug Store, and the Grocery Store at Queen and Bellfair. In 1940, a roomer, Mr. Berry got me a job at Rudecal Transfer Co., a lithographer plant. I worked as a press hand, chalking machine operator, and some silk screen work. It was the best paying job I had until then; it paid $7.00 a week and no week-end work. I started papers for .35 cents a week. The delivery jobs were worth $4.00 to $5.00 a week for 10 to 12 hours a day, no lunch hours or breaks, six days a week except drug stores Sunday was included.
By 1941 with the war still on, I signed up for the R.C.A.F. training school in Galt, Ontario. I attended a pre-air force school that taught airplane repairs and maintenance from 1 September 1941 to 31 December 1941 and went into the airforce as an Aircraftsman 2. I took my basic training at Manning Pool, Toronto. By February had been transferred to St. Thomas, Ontario where I learned more on the skills that are supposed to keep them flying. I finished the course in April 1942 and was posted to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, 11 B.R. Coastal Command. It was a Submarine Patrol Squadron. They also operated out of Goose Bay, Newfoundland. They flew Hudsons. I even worked on a TransCanada plane that needed repairs as they had the same kind of aircraft. Had my first flight as one of the ground crew, had to go up in the test flight. Flew quite a few times, even got 75 cents each time I went up.
From there I volunteered for overseas duty. I went over on the Queen Elizabeth, sailing out of New York. We landed at Portsmouth, England. After a stay in Bournemouth, about two weeks, was posted to Topcliffe, Yorkshire (a large RCAF base) to 1660 C.U.36 It was the maintenance station for No. 6 Group RCAF. They used Halifax's, then Lancaster’s. I also served at the Dishforth and Croft Fields (both in North Yorkshire), later was with 1664 C.U. While in England volunteered to go Aircrew, passed the Medical and hoped to get home for the training, but never got the chance, they said there was a shortage of ground crew. England was a learning experience, the people were friendly and they made it more enjoyable. I enjoyed the living customs as some were different than Canada, especially the beer. Historic sites helped pass the time. I returned on the S.S. Pasteur37, not as elegant as the Queen Elizabeth, but it was a better

By the time she reached Canada on her maiden voyage in 1940, France had been overrun by the Germans and the British confiscated the vessel and renamed it the HMTS Pasteur and used it as a troop carrier, hospital ship and to transport POWs to Canada throughout the war. trip, no subs looking for us, not as crowded and the food was better. Landed at Quebec City by lighter and trained to Montreal and the Lachine Depot. While waiting for the kit bag to arrive got my first summer weight uniform as the clothes were at least a week with no change; then, on to Toronto and home. My parents and sister and Neil met me at the Exhibition grounds. Had two week leave back to manning pool and release to civy street. I went back to Rudecal Transfer, as your job was supposed to be saved until after the War. I was promoted to press feeder with a grand salary of $15.00 a week! Stayed four months but had to quit for health reasons that were war-related and got an entitlement pension.
