Dear Readers, Welcome to your August edition of ‘The Hampton Viewer’.

Well, the kids are now off school and probably driving

you mad. I hope you found last month’s feature on Summer Activities helpful for this very important mission. This month we have more local events that might be of interest on page 37.

This month we are supporting three different charity events. Firstly, there’s the Peterborough Yacht Club’s Charity Day to be held on Saturday 3rd Septem-ber in aid of Magpas Helimedix Helicop-ter Emergency Response Team (see page 6). Also, a Masquerade Ball is be-ing held on Saturday 24th September to raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (page 24). And finally, Ride for Ryder in aid of Sue Ryder -Thorpe Hall Hospice. This is held on Sunday 18th September (see page 10). There is something for everyone. If you fancy a good day out, a fun evening or would like a challenge and help raise money for some good courses at the same time look no further!

Also, there is a new Walking Group in Hampton. This is a ‘Walking for Health’ scheme organised by Vivacity. See page 32 for more details.

Finally, a huge Thank you to every-one that entered our competition for the Just Dogs Live show last month. Congratulations to all the WINNERS! I hope you all enjoyed the day.

Have a great month!

Ride for

Ryder

D o you want to take your biking

to the next level

and make a huge difference in someone else’s life? Ride for Ryder is more than just a bike ride; it is the most rewarding ride of your life.

Ride for Ryder starts at Sue Ryder -Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Peterborough, on Sunday 18 Sep-tember. There will be two distances offered, 65 miles or 92 miles, completing either distance is an admirable accomplishment

The registration fee for Ride for Ryder is £25. Each cyclist is asked and encouraged to raise £50 that will go directly to Sue Ryder –Thorpe Hall Hospice. This ride is not for the faint of heart. The biking challenge will put any avid cyclist to the test. It will pass through three counties and offer breath taking scenery, but it will also require strength, stamina and self determination.

For all the enthusiastic cyclists who can face this ride head on, there will be food and water along the course and a BBQ at the finish line.

Sue Ryder –Thorpe Hall Hospice takes £2 million to function through the year. £1 million of that has to be fundraised.

Events like Ride for Ryder help to reach this fundraising goal. The money raised helps pro-vide medical care and emotional support for the patients as well as their families.

At Thorpe Hall up to 20 patients with active, pro-gressive and advanced illnesses and their fami-lies are cared for. The focus of care is on quality of life.

Sign up now for this year’s Ride for Ryder by visiting www.suerydercare.org/rideforryder.

For more information about Sue Ryder or Ride for Ryder call Helena Waters at Thorpe Hall

on 01733 330060 or email [email protected].

The Whinge Back Once Again with The Gym Behaviour!

S o by now you should be aware that I’m going through my mid-life crisis

and in particular I’ve decided that I’m going to get fit again and lose the weight that I’ve managed to put on over the past 15 years. Currently, I’m back to my wedding weight! Obviously having reached such a milestone I tried to get into the wedding dress; but my wife shouted at me and said I was stretching it so I gave up on that idea. But I have got back into weight training.

About 25 years ago I started going to a gym in the nearest town. It was run by a previous winner of Mr UK and his wife (a former Ms UK). Some things have changed since then!

The gym I used to attend was called Sweat Shop and consisted mainly of benches that had been hand made from lots of heavy steel with large nuts and bolts and welds strong enough to keep the Forth Rail Bridge together. It was predominantly free weights that you adapted along with the multitude of benches to piece together a workout. The only “machine” in the gym was a cable ma-chine with a variety of different (home-made) attachments.

Now I haven’t avoided gyms completely in the last 15 years so I have seen the steady increase in exercise specific machinery but it was only when I started taking my training seriously that I noticed how big the business has become over that time. There now seems to be a machine for just about every muscle from the neck down. I’m sure we can’t be that far from a Nautilus machine for the eyelids!

However, what I wanted to share with you are some of the things that haven’t changed despite the fact that they really should.

Grunting. Now you expect a bit of huffing, puffing and grunting as you get onto the heavy weights and towards the end of a

workout as things get tough. But for some reason there are a number of guys who feel the need to scream louder than Monica Seles when they undo the top on their water bottle or bend down to tie up their shoe laces. This is a tad off-putting.

Spandex! It was bad then and it still is. Nuff said.

One of the funniest things you see is the guy who struts around for almost his entire workout time not actually do-ing anything. He’ll load a bar-

bell up with what is obviously too much weight, attempt to make a lift, moan loudly without moving the bar and then give a look of severe disappointment, rub one or two muscles trying to make out like he did that weight last week without any trouble and then start re-racking the weights and head towards the showers. You could say he got a bit of a workout from carrying the weights back and forth between the racks but that’s it.

No Spandex!

Another thing you see is the fellow who spends all his time on a bike, treadmill or some other piece of cardio equipment. When I first started going to a gym the only cardio equipment was a rather rusty pathetic looking stationary bike which just sat rusting in the corner. But even then you would get one guy who would turn up to the gym and spend a good hour sat peddling. That in itself is fine because cardio is obviously good for you and modern gyms have whole cardio suites, but the idea is that you mix it up a bit and move around the machines. This is partly to give other gym users a go, but also so you exercise different muscle groups and hopefully give your whole body a thorough going over. But the thing about this guy is that he spends his whole hour every time he goes to the gym on the same piece of cardio equipment, and he’s reading a book. Who can read a book whilst pounding away on a treadmill? It just can’t be done. It just can’t be done.

19 Please mention The Hampton Viewer when responding to adverts

If you can do it then there’s a fair chance you’re not really putting in the effort and are therefore wasting your money on gym membership.

Look I’ve already told you about the Span-dex. Just put it back in the bag and leave it. OK?

However, by far the scariest thing that seems to still exist is in the changing rooms. Picture the scene. You’ve been working away for the last hour, you’ve pushed your body to its limit and are completely fa-tigued, mentally as well as physically. You cool down and start to get your mind to-gether again, you start feeling pumped and good about the workout you’ve just done and decide it’s time for a nice refreshing shower. Picking up your towel (wiping down the equipment you’ve just used, obviously) you head towards the changing rooms. The post workout testosterone starts to kick-in and you get that very primal manly feeling. You put your hand on the changing room door and open the door, a little too quickly and hard because of the pump and then

you see it. Right in the middle of the chang-ing room is some huge bloke stark naked “flossing”. And I don’t mean he’s particu-larly keen on dental hygiene.

It’s just not right! “Flossing” in itself is wrong, but doing it in the middle of the communal area of the changing room is just the very definition of wrongness. Wrong, wrong, wrong! I know it’s important to dry off prop-erly but I don’t need to see you doing it, and I certainly don’t need to be reminded with the image permanently etched onto the inside of my eyelids so every time I try and go to sleep I see you doing it. Now I remember why I stopped going to the gym in the first place, it was the nightmares, the cold sweats and flashbacks in the middle of meetings with my boss giving me a strange stare as I sat screaming in the middle of the mid-monthly catch-up.

And what made you buy Spandex anyway, who told you it was acceptable? Don’t do it again, ever!

Motor Review: Five Big Cool French Cars

T here’s something about big French cars that’s rather cool. They’re not usually

huge sales hits in the UK, but a combination

of quirky styling and laid back comfort

make them attractive buys.

There are some things you’ll have to put up with though: Some have residual values that lose money faster than Greece, reliability can be slightly disappointing and some people will laugh at you.

But not us – we’ll salute you as you waft by with a whiff of diesel, floating along on a bed of air suspension. Here, we pick our five favourites.

Citroen DS

Big French cars don’t get more iconic than the incredible DS. Ci troen sold nearly 1.5m of them during its 20-year production run between 1955 and 1975. It was packed with futuristic technology such as self-leveling suspension and directional headlights, but it’s those stylish looks that make it really cool. A decent DS will cost you around £30k now.

Renault Vel Satis

The Vel Satis was an undeniable sales flop – even Renault’s top brass admit it (h t tp : / /aol . i t /eUQ9mt) – but that, in our eyes, makes it even more desirable. At launch its price put a lot of people off, but we think the unique design, spacious interior and silky diesel engine make it a worthwhile purchase. And the fact you can pick them up for just £2k now makes them very attractive!

Citroen SM Citroen has a habit of producing wacky cars, so when it teamed up with Maserati to build the SM in 1970, the result was always

going to be bonkers. The SM didn’t only look amazing but was packed with tech, including speed-sensitive steering and directional headlights. Maserati took care of the engine, slotting a V6 unit under the bonnet, and the French firm sorted the styling – the collaboration resulted in the creation of a classic.

Renault Alpine A610

Attempting to take on the Porsche 944 with a p l a s t i c - bod i ed Renault was, in hindsight, never going to be a success. But that doesn’t mean the Alpine A160, launched in 1991, isn’t cool. It’s got all the right ingredients – a 250bhp turbo-charged lump positioned in the back, rear-wheel drive and sleek looks. Add the fact it had a habit of snapping like a breadstick on the limit and, in our eyes, it’s even more appealing.

Citroen C6

Here’s a classic in the making. Well, at least that’s what we reckon. The C6 has all the hallmarks of a future appreciator: Mental looks, sublime comfort and the usual amount of specification marvels including double-glazing, head-up display and clever suspension. But what we really love about the C6 is the looks – the dramatic nose and unique rear mark it out against German rivals and makes buying one a real statement.

Walk With Us Every Tuesday at

11.00 a.m. from

Hampton Vale shops

A new walking group has recently started in Hampton. Walk with Us is part of Peterborough’s

Walking for Health Scheme under the umbrella of Vivacity. Everybody is wel-come on the walks, even people who wouldn’t call themselves active. The group is led by specially trained walk leaders Jennie and Anna, who are es-pecially keen to meet people trying to increase their daily activity, who are at risk of poor health, or who may feel iso-lated and want to meet new people. Walking makes you feel good and im-proves your health, and Walk with Us provides an opportunity to have fun and get to know others along the way.

You may not walk much for lots of rea-sons. Perhaps you feel unsafe walking alone? Maybe you have no one to walk with, or simply don’t know where’s

good to go for a stroll. W h a t e v e r your reasons, the group can help to get you moving.

The walks are held every Tuesday at 11.00 am starting from the Hampton Vale shops.

All the walks are local, mainly on pave-ment or tarmac, and either flat or with a slight gradient. Walks last from 45 to 90 minutes, and give you an opportu-nity to walk round the Hampton lakes and other green areas, and observe the local wildlife.

All age groups are welcome, but chil-dren must be accompanied. No spe-cial clothes or equipment are needed - and of course it’s FREE!

Please wear flat shoes or trainers on all walks, and don’t worry if you’re not used to walking – come and give it a try. For an informal chat, feel free to ring Jennie on 248990 or just turn up on Tuesday mornings!

As the summer holidays stretch out, you’ll need plenty up your sleeve to keep the kids busy. Here’s a selection of books that’ll keep them entertained (and away from the TV/DS/Wii).

1001 Holiday Things to Spot

by Hazel Maskell

and Teri Gower

This title features a number of holiday scenes including the airport, the sea, a theme park ride or the mountains. Each page is incredibly detailed and is packed full of things for children to find within the picture. A great way to familiarise children with places before you arrive and the perfect lead-up to eye-spy!

Just out... How to make Stonehenge out of

Biscuits by Tracey Turner and

Clive Goddard - A brilliantly crea-tive assembly of ideas to keep the little ones out of mischief, not just through the summer, but every day of the year. From fun activities such as making invisible ink to more edu-cational challenges such as the Kings and Queens quiz.

Where’s Wally?

The Totally Essential

Travel Collection by

Martin Handford

This is perfect for whil-ing away the hours, with seven classic ‘Where’s Wally’

books crammed into one handy travel-sized edition. See if you can find Wally any quicker than the kids!

A Year without Autumn by Liz Kessler

This new title is a compelling read for girls aged 9+, managing to be heart-felt and humorous at the same time. Jenni Green finds herself travelling one year ahead in time only to discover that tragedy has struck and everything has changed for her friend Autumn. But can she travel back and change what lies ahead? A beautifully written title that’s sure to be a favourite.

Ivan the Terrible by Anne Fine

This brilliantly illustrated book is about Boris who takes on the role of interpreter for Ivan, his new Russian classmate at school. Using the communication barrier and Ivan’s constant requirement for rude and worrying translations. A fantastically

naughty and perfect read for boys.

Yoga Pretzels: 50 Fun Yoga Activi-

ties for Kids and Grownups by Tara

Guber, Leah Kalish & Sophie Fatus

Although not strictly a book, this was too good to leave out. Intro-ducing basic yoga for adults and children, these well-illustrated poses are well explained and great fun too. Stretch and bend in ways you never thought possible with this fantastic set of cards.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Greg Heffley is starting a new year at a new school, with older, taller, meaner pupils for company. Along with his best friend, our wimpy kid details his daily battle for popularity. Perfect for reluctant readers, this series has become a huge hit with school children of all ages.

The Anti-Colouring Book by Susan

Striker and Edward Kimmel

For creative little minds, this is a must-have, packed with ideas and inspiration to encourage chil-dren to expand their minds and develop their artistic ability.

You’re a bad man, Mr Gum!

by Andy Stanton - This fantastically funny book features miserable old Mr Gum who has to keep his garden tidy or he faces a wallop around the head from a grumpy fairy. Children and adults will love read-ing this hilarious tale that’s reminis-cent of the legendary Roald Dahl.
