A Wild in Art event presented by Child Cancer Foundation
The Haier Big Hoot 2018 has truly captured the imagination of everyone in Auckland and beyond; with families, schools, businesses and community groups all coming together to help the project fly.
Never before have we seen Auckland’s streets burst with such fun, colour and vibrancy! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our partners who believed in this crazy idea, and helped us bring the Haier Big Hoot to Auckland.
At Child Cancer Foundation we think that spending time together as a family is one of the most rewarding things you can do, and we have watched in awe as thousands of locals and visitors have taken the Haier Big Hoot under their wings – exploring and rediscovering all that Auckland has to offer.
Now you have the once in a lifetime opportunity to own one of these striking sculptures yourself and keep a little bit of the Haier Big Hoot in your own home, garden, community or workplace, forever.
We are proud that the Haier Big Hoot brought so much joy to Auckland. Now the vital funds we raise through the auction will support families across New Zealand as Child Cancer Foundation helps them navigate an unwanted and unplanned child cancer journey. The auction also has a special significance as it will be held exactly 40 years to the day that Child Cancer Foundation was first established as a charity.
Child Cancer Foundation receives no direct government funding, so please dig deep, bid generously and help us to ensure that the Haier Big Hoot legacy continues to touch the lives of Kiwi families impacted by child cancer.
With heartfelt thanks for the difference you have made to the lives of all of the children and families we support.

Child Cancer Foundation2018 Ambassadors
“They would visit regularly to check how we were and help in any way they could. I was in hospital with DJ and it was like trying to manage two households with the kids at home. Support with things like food, petrol and the Christmas hampers has just been awesome.”
DJ is now 10 and has a cancer treatment plan that will continue through to 2020. Megan, DJ and his siblings are regulars in the Child Cancer Foundation Family Place in Auckland, a space that’s safe for kids on treatment and close to the hospital. They also helped pack Christmas hampers for other families, which Megan says is their own way of giving back to Child Cancer Foundation.
Child Cancer Foundation receives no direct government funding, so the support they provide to more than 1,700 families like DJ’s is only possible because of the generosity of people like you.
The money raised at the auction will ensure Kiwi families like DJ’s have the support and strength they need to navigate the child cancer journey – no matter what the outcome – and help them maintain hope.
We are proud to have DJ as one of our Child Cancer Foundation ambassadors for 2018, representing the thousands of Kiwi children and families supported by the charity nationwide.
Just days after his ninth birthday, DJ found himself in the car on the way to hospital at 10.30pm at night, his mum Megan trying to hide tears as she drove, while his older brother assured them everything was going to be alright.
A few hours earlier Megan had received a call no parent ever wants to receive. Results of a blood test had shown DJ had very high risk B-cell leukaemia, a life-threatening form of child cancer.
Treatment began almost immediately after their arrival at the hospital, and Megan says Child Cancer Foundation was there for the whole family from the beginning:
This is DJ with a special owl called Manu, created by Child Cancer Foundation especially for the Haier Big Hoot.
A word from our Auctioneers
Every year, hundreds of works of art come through the doors of International Art Centre. We consider it both a privilege and responsibility to help make this art accessible to our local community, and are thrilled to be part of The Haier Big Hoot.
The owl sculptures going under the hammer represent some of the finest emerging and established talent in New Zealand’s contemporary scene, and speak to the role of art as a force for good in our community. I am looking forward to what promises to be a lively auction in support of this vital cause.
Richard ThomsonAuctioneerINTERNATIONAL ART CENTRE
As Auctioneers we are delighted to be involved with such a great cause. The generosity of New Zealanders is well known and no doubt will be on display again at the Big Hoot auction.
Having been involved in dozens of fundraising auctions over the years I have been most impressed with the support and effort put in by the organisers, the sponsors and the brilliant artists, all of whom have contributed to the success of this event.
I encourage everyone to bid confidently in the knowledge that the money raised will make a difference to so many lives. The owls will be a great investment, an enduring reminder of a fantastic campaign and will bring years of pleasure to those lucky enough to secure one.
