Welcome to the May edition of The Guide.
It seems incredible that we are almost half way through
the year already - time is flying by. Winter storms and
flooding are just a distant memory, now we are being
told to expect months of heatwave and drought. Bring
it on , I say!
With the summer looming you might want to have your
windows cleaned to admire the beautiful outdoors that
much clearer, so look no further than pages 3, 15 and 17
for local , reliable window cleaners.
Summer is a great time for taking wonderful photos–
Will Hudson of Will Power Photography (p. 14) is a
specialist photographer for family portraits, bump to
baby, children and pets.
The Haslemere Thespians are performing Arthur Miller’s
The Crucible at Haslemere Hall. As it is a GCSE set text
half price tickets are offered to students. See page 22
for details.
Keen gardeners and quilters might be interested in a
local garden open to the public on the National
Garden Scheme near Farnham over the weekend of
21st/22nd June. There will also be an exhibition of
quilts and textiles. Proceeds will be shared with the SW
Surrey Kidney Fund so do go along and support this
very good cause.
Don’t forget to check the Community Page (p.33) for
details of events in this area over the next couple of
months.

Making a Will with Shaws Wills involves:
An informal discussion about your family and your wishes. Advice as to the best way to safeguard your assets for your heirs in the most tax efficient manner Advice concerning care in old age and how to ensure your family does have an inheritance. We believe in plain English We spend a lot of time making sure that we get everything right and you are happy. Our clients tell us that the experience has been a pleasant one and they are extremely glad that they have the necessary documents in place. We have fixed fees which we advise in advance.
This article is necessarily brief. Specialist advice should always be sought.
♦To protect those we love and leave behind
♦To have the satisfaction of knowing that we have done the best we can
♦To be remembered for all the right reasons
If you do not make a Will the State has one for you:
• Orphaned chi ldren are the responsibility of the Local Authority.
• A married spouse does not inherit everything
• A married spouse may have to sell up to pay the children their share
• An unmarried partner inherits nothing • Your children can oblige your partner
to leave the house you own • Children inherit at 18 • An heir who receives state benefits
may lose those benefits.
Why are Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) important?
• At any age illness or accident can strike. • In old age it is time for the younger
generation to help • Without the right documents no one
can act for you • If the documents are in place they are
there when needed.

Over the years, I have had more than enough conversations with people who have been through a divorce or separation and who have said that they either wished that they had known about mediation or wished that their ex-partner had been prepared to start the mediation process when it was suggested. Hopefully articles such as this one will help to avoid this in the future.
Mediation can be used in the vast majority of family breakdowns to enable agreements to be reached about the future, including about all aspects relating to finances and children's arrangements. Mediation can be free for people with low incomes and few savings or other assets using legal aid, or paid for privately. Mediation can assist with relatively straightforward situations where there is a family home and stable incomes to be discussed but it can also be very effective for clients who run their own companies, who have properties both in the UK and overseas, who have sizeable and varied pension policies and who have very complicated income structures that include share options, bonuses and dividend payments as well as salaries.
In many ways the higher the value of the assets and the higher the incomes then the more potential benefit that mediation can offer as the relative mediation costs will be much lower compared to the overall finances, before even factoring in the large legal bills if court intervention were required instead of reaching a mediated
settlement. The resulting cost savings, as well as the opportunity to avoid the acrimony and disruption that court battles inevitably entail, can make the decision to enter the mediation process one of the best decisions that you will ever make at such a difficult time.
The introduction of the Children and Families Act on 22nd April 2014 also now means that mediation needs to be formally considered before a court application is made about most financial issues or children’s arrangements, with it being likely that judges will start to ensure that both parties have genuinely considered mediation, therefore removing the obstacle of the other person not being willing to consider using mediation.
I am very positive that the combination of increased awareness, together with these new rules, will over the coming months and years allow us finally to reach the point where mediation becomes the automatic first choice for most divorcing and separating couples, and with litigation being the last resort. This will bring tremendous benefits to so many people and hopefully reduce the number of times that people say to me that they wish they had known about or been able to use family mediation.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like to know more about the mediation process and remember that it is never too late to mediate

Jobs to do in the garden this spring By Julian Card Soft Landscape and Maintenance Manager
Transform Landscapes 01428 652222 www.transformlandscapes.co.uk
We are well into spring now and it is
an exciting time in the garden – trees
are in blossom and tulips are in full
bloom. However, there could still be
frosts in early May, so keep an eye on
the weather forecast before planting
out tender annuals too early.
Here are some jobs to be getting on
with over the next few weeks:
Lawns
These need to be mown regularly. If your lawn is full
of moss, apply a moss killer or lawn sand. Early spring
is usually the best time to lay turf or sow a new lawn,
so don’t leave it any later than May. If you wait until
the summer, your turves may dry out and curl up at
the edges, even though this might seem hardly
credible after our very wet winter, and then your best
option would be to wait until early autumn.
Trees
If you planted trees during the winter, check that the
stakes are firm and that the tree ties are not too
tight. If the soil dries out in May and June, then
water them well.
Borders
Weeds are growing strongly now. It is best to catch
them young. Young weeds are a lot easier to pull out
than those which are established. Trim winter
flowering shrubs such as heathers and early spring
flowering shrubs such as forsythia can be cut back
after flowering. Stake tall herbaceous plants such as
delphiniums and asters.
Hedges
In May and June you can start to trim evergreen
hedges. However, don’t go too hard into conifers as
they won’t re-grow from brown growth.
Bulbs
Dead head bulbs when they have finished flowering.
This encourages the bulb to build up energy for the next
year, rather than producing seed. Think about which
areas would benefit from daffodils and tulips next year.
Then give yourself a reminder for when the bulbs are on
sale in the autumn.
Fruit and Vegetables
Start to sow vegetables – outdoors is fine in May and
June. The key consideration is to plant what you will
enjoy eating. It is very tempting to sow much more than
you will ever eat. In the never-ending fight against pests
and diseases, there are a range of biological controls to
consider:
• Codling moth traps for apples and plums to protect
them from damaging codling moth larvae
• Net fruit bushes and strawberry plants to deter birds
• Try companion planting—put a pot of marigolds by
your runner beans to given aphids something else to
feast upon.
Hanging baskets and tubs
Early May is still a bit too early to plant out hanging
baskets and tubs but you can bring on the young plants
you will use later on in a greenhouse or cold frame.
Finally, enjoy the long evenings in your garden and the
wonderful bird song in the early morning.

A Beginner’s Guide to Keeping Chickens
Keeping chickens has become one of Britain’s most popular pastimes. Everyone wants their own fresh eggs, but there’s more to it than that: chickens aren’t just productive; they’re also absorbing and friendly. They become pets. They’re relatively inexpensive to keep, but they do need a certain amount of daily maintenance to keep them in good condition.
General Considerations
Before you jump in, though, there are a few considerations you need to take into account.
First – and this is really important! – check with your local authority in case there are restrictions on keeping livestock on your property.
Next, you need to decide how many birds you would like to keep. As a beginner you need to be sensible and start small.
Between two and six is a good start and will supply enough eggs for the average family.
Housing
For such a small flock, a hen-house measuring 6ft by 4ft will provide all the space the birds need, as long as they have an outside run and the house is just for sleeping. It certainly won’t be large enough if you have to keep the birds confined.
Buying a henhouse needs careful thought. A ready-built one can be expensive, but if you’re handy enough you can build your own. It needs to be easy to access and maintain – that is, both chicken- and keeper-friendly.
As well as access, check for good but not draughty ventilation, enough perches and nest-boxes, and robust, secure construction – you don’t just want to keep the chickens in, you want to keep the foxes out! Having said that, you need to be able to move the henhouse from time to time as the soil on which it stands becomes dirty and soggy.
Suitable Breeds
Chickens come in all shapes and sizes, but if you’re looking purely for egg-laying birds then commercial hybrids may be your best bet. Isa Brown, Black Rocks, White Star, Lomans, and Blue-bell will all lay in good quantities for most of the year: an average of 300 eggs per bird isn’t out of the way.
These hybrids are excellent as a starter bird, being both produc-tive and quite easy to feed and keep. If you’d prefer something a little more special such as a pure breed chicken, though, go to a recognised breeder and get expert advice. There are some spectacular pure breeds that will still give you a good supply of eggs, although not as many as the hybrids. Look for breeds such as Rhode Island Red, Light Sussex, Barnavelder, Maran, and Wellsummer – all reasonably easy breeds, and not too flighty.
Water
A constant supply of clean, fresh water is absolutely central to your flock’s wellbeing. Chickens by and large are happy to drink out of a bucket, but a proper poultry font will keep their water cleaner and fresher.
Ideally, it needs to be under cover to protect the water from wild bird droppings. And change the water every single day – something you need to remem-ber at holiday times.
Food A balanced feed is very important. It generally comes either in pellet or mash form and both should contain all the nutrients the birds need. You can, however, add extra vitamins and minerals and even
By Ten Brunning
25
www.haslemereguide.co.uk
cod liver oil to give them that extra boost. A small amount of corn is quite good as an after-noon treat and they love left-over rice, pasta and vegetable peelings etc.
General Maintenance Like all domestic animals, chickens need to be looked after. Cleanliness is essential to keep them disease-free and in good general health. Muck out the henhouse regularly (another thing to remember when you’re jetting off on holiday!) and use dry, dust-free shavings for the bedding – not straw. Straw gets damp very quickly and then goes mouldy, which is can cause respiratory infections.
Outside
The chicken run also needs to be kept as clean and fresh as possible. It is very important that the birds are not running on soiled and sour ground.
Giving the chickens’ outdoor area a good digging over from time to time helps keep it fresh.
Insects
There’s quite a variety of fleas and mites that will regard your chickens as free board and lodging, and some of them can cause loss of condition and even sickness. Control them with regular doses of readily available, good-quality powders and sprays.
Chickens are beautiful and endlessly fascinating birds, and keeping them is a very
rewarding pastime, with the fringe benefit of a steady supply of eggs.
I have had chickens now for over 5
years and I would definitely agree
that they are for the most part
trouble-free, fun and easy to keep.
They are all very characterful,
curious and friendly.

The Benefits of Hypnotherapy
Anxiety is sometimes described as over-
estimating the risks and underestimating
one’s ability to cope with whatever these
may be. Typically the anxious person is
focused on all the ‘what ifs’ coming over
the horizon like the endless stream of
weather we had this winter. Yet, if one of
those feared ‘what ifs’ actually
materialises, people deal with it - they find
the courage and strength - and sometimes
it doesn’t seem such a big deal at all.
Anxiety is usually something we learn -
from anxious parents, difficult situations in
our lives, dilemmas. And what can be
learned can be unlearned, put into
perspective and replaced with more useful
ways of thinking.
Toby was someone who described himself
as perpetually anxious. He was a
successful, self employed business man, yet
there was an undercurrent of anxiety that
had him lying awake at night as his sleep
deteriorated so his anxiety grew. He knew
there was no reason to worry but despite
that, he still worried.
I saw Toby for four sessions. At the first
session I rented him an Alpha-Stim, an
American device that encourages the
production of endorphins, serotonin, and
ATP. It is very effective and has no side
effects. I also showed him how to do self-
hypnosis. A week later he reported that he
had had the best week’s sleep he could
remember for some time and he was
feeling more robust during the day. In
trance we then worked on making the
many occasions when he had dealt with
situations and had felt in control, more
accessible to him. Week three, again in
trance, he found that he could allow the
more adult parts of him, which knew how
to be confident and get things into
perspective, to teach the (younger) part of
him, which was driving the anxious
behaviour, how to feel more robust. At our
last session, Toby reported that he had felt
no need to use the Alpha-Stim that week
and was confident that he could maintain
his sense of inner confidence and his ability
to sleep.
Toby’s case is typical of how many people
feel and how they can change. It is often
those who have seemingly unexplainable
feelings of anxiety who can make the
biggest changes of all.
