THE GREETER June/July 2018 Vision Statement We are a Christ-centered community, joyfully making a difference by…. Worshipping, Loving, Welcoming, Including, Supporting FROM RECTOR In the back of the Book of Common Prayer there is a section called “An Outline of the Faith commonly called the Catechism”. It begins on page 845. If you’ve ever wondered what the “official teachings” of the Episcopal church are, this is the place to look, and I commend it to you. In our Episcopal heritage, we’ve grown accustomed to our roots in the Catholic church. Of course, we also claim and hold onto many of the teachings of the Protestant church too. One item we inherited from the Catholic side is our retention of the offices of bishop, priest and deacon. This is a rich and healthy tradition that reminds us all that there are many gifts within the church and that some are called to particular forms of ministry. However, the downside of this emphasis on a hierarchical church can be a misunderstanding of the role of lay persons (laity) within the church. For example, if one looks at the history of many Episcopal churches, one might find a listing of the rectors and not much talk about lay persons. This implies that the rectors are the most important persons in a parish. Although a rector can have substantial influence on the life and health of the parish, the rector is only one aspect and one person in a parish. The life, health and vitality of a parish really resides in the people of the parish. The role of the laity is of utmost importance and should not be minimized. I would draw your attention to what the Catechism says about the laity. In the section called “The Ministry” on page 855 we read these words: Question. Who are the ministers of the Church? Answer. The ministers of the Church are lay persons, bishops, priests, and deacons. Ministers are not just ordained persons! All of us are ministers, called as followers of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, note the order given for ministers. Lay persons are first, not last. In fact, priests are third on the list! My experience in my nine years as rector of this parish is that we have great lay persons here! We are a healthy and vibrant congregation. As we move forward into the future, remember your role as a lay person. You (plural) are vital and critical to the health of St. Andrew’s. What we do together will determine our future. If you are involved, stay involved. If your involvement is less active, this is your invitation to be more active. Together we are the body of Christ. Together with the power of the Holy Spirit we can be all that God calls us to be. Together we can serve Jesus to the glory of God the Father (to use traditional language). I leave you then with this passage from the Catechism to consider: Q. What is the ministry of the laity? A. The ministry of lay persons is to represent Christ and his Church; to bear witness to him wherever they may be; and, according to the gifts given them, to carry on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world; and to take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church. Fr. John

FROM RECTOR In the back of the Book of Common Prayer there is a section called “An Outline of the Faith commonly called the Catechism”. It begins on page 845. MINISTRY NEWS

PARISH CYCLE OF PRAYERS Beginning this week, we will have a new line in the prayers for members of the parish. We will pray for each other alphabetically, 4 or 5 families at a time, so that we make it through our entire list of members in a year’s time frame. FINANCIALS Erin, our Executive Assistant, is taking over some of the financial duties. Please send all Financial inquiries and receipts to Erin at [email protected] and please be patient as we work through this transition. Thanks. ALTAR GUILD ANNOUNCEMENTS Important Dates Coffee hour--June 10 and August 19 Next meeting--September 5

TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Each week we will look at the lessons assigned for the upcoming Sunday, and read and

discuss them as a group. The great thing about this format is there is no homework! You can come and go as the Spirit moves you. If you are free at 10:00 am on Tuesday mornings for an hour, join us for Spirit-filled and animated discussion.

EVENING MEN’S GROUP BEGINNING JUNE 13

We are starting a second Men’s group at St. Andrew’s! This is not intended to replace the Saturday morning men’s group, but is being offered in addition to that group in order to accommodate men who, for whatever reason, are not able to meet on Saturday mornings. This group is open to all men of the parish (21 years and older) who seek spiritual growth, fellowship and fun! This is also a great way to introduce others to our parish, so feel free to invite a friend to join us! We will be meeting over the summer, once a month, on the second Wednesday at 7pm. The beginning of each meeting will start with socializing and fellowship and conclude with spiritual growth centered toward men and some of the challenges we all face in life. Food and beverages will be provided, as well as a copy of the book we will be studying for the summer - Slaying Your Goliaths by The Rev. John Ohmer. Our first meetings are scheduled for June 13, July 11 and August 8 at 7pm. There are sign-up sheets in Engle Hall. Please sign-up so we know how much food to prepare and how many books to order. Those who sign-up will be notified when the books arrive so that we can read the first 2 chapters ahead of time and be prepared to discuss. We hope to see you there! For more information please reach out to Father Tony ([email protected]) or Blake Zogleman ([email protected])

JUNE 2019 “FAMILY’ MISSION TO THE DR There is great interest and response to our June 2019 Family Mission to the Dominican Republic. Only a few spots remain before our “Family” mission team is filled.

We are all invested in the continuing success of this most special ministry. Members of the Mission Travelling Team will each give one week of their time and a minimum of $500 to live and work in the community of San Francisco de Macoras.

Others have asked how they can help as a member of our Mission Home Team. There are two important ways our Mission Home team can help at this time. The first is becoming our Mission Prayer Partners. These prayers are so very important, and especially to first-time Travelling Team members. The second important way is through financial support. The true success of this ministry always rises from a completed project. We can only do this with our Home Team support.

The estimated cost of materials to paint and repair Jesus Nazareno Church is $3000 US. We have also been asked to provide playground equipment for the pre-school operated by the church. Missionary Charlie estimates the cost of this playground equipment will be $300 US. Our team will put this equipment together for the children.

The true success of this mission will lie in the heart of our Mission Home Team. As you are able, and if you hear the call to help, please make your checks payable to St. Andrew’s and indicate 2019 Family DR Mission on the memo line and give them to Don or Melissa Peeler (or place them in the Offering Plate). RIDES NEEDED Nancy Kirk, one of our long-time parish members is in need of a ride to physical therapy during the week. If you are able to help with this, please let the office know, and we will put you in touch with Nancy.

AUGUST GARAGE SALE We will have a smaller parish garage sale this August. You can start bringing items July 1. We will not have any people assigned to do large pick-ups this year. Watch the Announcements for more details. MEAL TRAIN Do you know a church member who just had baby, surgery, death in the family, or you simply need assistance for a personal situation? St. Andrew’s is here for you. We are also starting a rotation of Meal Train Volunteers. If you would like to be a part of this ministry or be a recipient of this ministry please contact Niki Rodawig at [email protected] or 402-415-3635

DEAN FRICKE FOOD PANTRY The items most needed right now are mac and cheese, jelly IN PLASTIC CONTAINERS, and 7 1/2 oz. individual meals, like ravioli, spaghettios, or beanie weenies.

FROM THE DESK If you would like to have something included in the electronic Newsletter that comes out early Friday morning, please send it to me at [email protected] before 12 noon on Thursdays. Articles for the August edition of The Greeter are due Tuesday, July 24.

FROM THE TREASURER Following the retirement of Ginny, our financial administrator, I’d like to remind parishioners of the electronic giving options available at St. Andrew’s that you may find more convenient. I’d also like to make myself available if anyone has any questions. You can always email me, Eric Rodawig, at [email protected]. ACH Payments – St. Andrew’s can automatically debit your bank account each month for 1/12 of your annual pledge or any other recurring amount you choose. Appreciated Securities – If you have stocks, mutual funds, bonds, or other securities that have appreciated in value, did you know you can get a double tax break by donating them directly to St. Andrew’s? Not only do you receive a tax deduction for the full value of the securities donated, but you also avoid paying any capital gains on their increase in value. St. Andrew’s has recently opened a new brokerage account with Charles Schwab: for instructions on how to donate, please contact the church office or me. Bill Pay – Your bank can automatically mail a bill-pay check to St. Andrew’s on a recurring schedule of your choice. You can typically set these up in your online banking portal. Credit Cards – Credit cards are accepted at the Church or by clicking “Online Giving” at the top of St. Andrew’s website. However, please keep in mind that St. Andrew’s pays a fee of approximately 3% on all giving through credit cards. We appreciate everyone who supports St. Andrew’s with their time, talent, or treasure! Thanks. Eric Rodawig

Vestry Minutes St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

April 17, 2018 7:00 pm

In attendance: Lee Hammond, Liz Hudson, Nancy Ponec, Eric Rodawig, Mike Spence, Jim Schreiber, Burke Smith, Joel VanderVeen, Rev. John Schaefer, Rev. Diane Pike, Rev. Tony Anderson, Rev. Steve Karcher Guest: Lance Baker Absent: Elizabeth Nelson, Lauren White, Sue Woodson Call to Order: Fr. John opened the meeting with prayer at 7:01 pm.

AGENDA

I. Spiritual Enrichment: Fr. John introduced the spiritual disciplines of The Restoration Project, focusing

on the discipline of “I will praise God, offering myself and receiving God’s love and blessings with the

rest of my Christian community in weekly ‘worship in the beauty of holiness.’” Discussion.

II. Current state of the parish:

Page 6: THE GREETER - standrewsomaha.org · THE GREETER June/July 2018 Vision Statement ... Together with the power of the Holy Spirit we can be all that God calls us to be. Together we can

Presentation on Church Safety: Lance Baker gave a presentation on church safety and church insurance. He made some suggestions on situations that might arise and how we might have plans for effective response. Discussion. Fr. John suggested that we look at some low level things we can do: locking doors on the lower level, possibly installing wireless cameras, training ushers and greeters as a first line of observation for safety. Nancy, Lee, Mike, Joel, Lance and Fr. John will put together a plan to present to the Vestry for consideration. Approval of the vestry meeting minutes of March 20, 2018. Mike made a motion to approve the minutes as submitted, seconded by Liz. Motion passed. Finance Report: Eric reported that the Schwab account is open and fully funded. Parishioners can donate gifts of appreciated stock. We pay 3% on credit card pledge payments. Eric will write an article for The Greeter about different ways to donate. March was a down month – bills unpaid were paid and pledge pre-payments were reflected in February. Year to date expenses are within $30 of the budget. The Quick Books conversion has been delayed. This will be reflected in higher than anticipated bookkeeping expenses. Credit cards have been issued for staff approved to have them. Discussion of bookkeeping process. Attendance – see attached to agenda Rector’s Report

Dinner Church has been dropped because of lack of attendance. Our timing may not have been

good; this congregation may not be able to support a fifth service. We may revisit again in the

future.

Fr. John and one of the wardens are meeting with all of the staff for a check in. Some meetings

have occurred and others will occur in early April.

The Endowment Committee meeting is set for April 28th at 10:00 am in the Conference Room.

Fr. John reported on meetings with staff. The only remaining persons to meet with are Fred

Platter, and Lauren and Steve White.

Invite/Welcome/Connect – Tony gave an update on the Invite Team meeting on April 6th. Pentecost will be celebrated with a picnic potluck. Focus on marketing for the Fall Roundup for inviting new people. Sue Woodson will lead that effort. Nancy gave a report on the Welcome Team. Camille Culp is leading some of the organizational details. There will be new activity bags for children and the Welcome Bags will be revamped. New coffee cups are out, and new pens and pencils are available for distribution. Steve and Dana Karcher are going to do a walk-through of the building to look at signage. The “Welcome to St. Andrew’s” signs on 84th and Pacific Streets. We need someone to lead the ushers and greeters, and to recruit new greeters. We also need someone to lead the Welcome Team. The Connect Team has not yet met.

New website review – Diane reported that the website is to the point of teaching staff and volunteers on updating content for the website.

Nancy closed with a prayer. Meeting adjourned at 9:07 pm. Respectfully submitted, The Rev. Diane M. Pike+ Recorder for the Clerk
