Message from the Chairman

Sue Crockett

Happy New Year and welcome to 2014

This week I have just been watching the Grammy Awards - congratulations to Lorde for winning not one but two Grammy’s. Not bad for the first person ever in New Zealand to be named in the finals. She undoubtedly has talent but the most critical reason for her success is the image and multi media presence created for her by a very savvy and creative media publicist and stylist - or maybe that is a team? Marketing - building an image and telling a story that resonates with the public - is the key to success. I hope you have noticed our new image!! First it was a new logo, then last year, an exciting new website and now we have a new magazine name - The Greenie. Check out the modern, cheerful and, dare I say, funky new image. Many of you call our magazine The Greenie because of it’s green cover, so now there is no confusion. You will note our new website address is in keeping with the new image. Our first event this year is our …

A.G.M. Wednesday 19th February

at the Clarks Beach Bowling Club.

This is the time to thank everyone, celebrate our successes and to continue the discussion of the topic of the last event of 2013 - “What can we do to keep ourselves, our neighbours and our community safe and secure”. Neighbourhood Watch groups, a community camera......... Come and have your say and network over a light delicious supper. I look forward to seeing you there.

Warm regards Sue

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Good ‘Lorde’! What a New Year!

I don’t like her music much, but that doesn't stop me singing the highest of praises to the greatest export New Zealand just acquired. (I’m an Aussie import), but I raced home from work to watch the Grammys LIVE. I cried when she won two awards. I felt so proud… until she spoke! Her management spent so much time marketing her that they forgot to train her how to speak. I sat there watching the live telecast where every international artist was vocal in their support of charitable causes or other artists worthy of great praise, but as young little Lorde reached the microphone, I froze, hoping for something inspirational from our new young hope, but SHE FROZE. I was disappointed. Her extraordinary management team managed to get Lorde to perform LIVE on Ellen, David Letterman and other US late night talk shows before we even knew her name, but they failed to teach her the greatest gift of all… the gift of the gab.

The speech is something that should have been prepared months ago. Instead, we saw an awkward 17 year old who has no idea how to speak to her millions of fans. I truly hope her new friend Taylor Swift has given her management a ‘swift’ talking to. I am sure she has. Lorde launched her career moaning and complaining about her famous rivals like Taylor Swift etc, but while that was obviously a very clever marketing ploy by her managers to get her noticed, Lorde must now realize that the path to success relies on sheer talent and being able to inspire others.

Your business is the same. You might have talent, but you need to make sure you are being managed well, and make sure that if you have to make a speech, you are prepared for it. Lorde’s management could have prepared her better.

‘Um, aah,, duh! ’ Good Lorde! “where is my management team when I need them?” Come on Lorde,,, careful now. The world is waiting, so please, we know you can sing, so please learn how to speak! (be like the other huge stars who shone so bright that night)!

Letters to the Editor Dear Darren,

I am a little perturbed by the fence on Clarks Beach Road approaching Clarks Beach.

The number of tacky signs and the untidy look are not setting a very good first impression to our community. Are the signs there with permission or are they illegally posted? Editor: I was unable to get in touch with the farmer whose fence it is, but I would hope the people who offer a mowing service do a better job with lawns than they do with sign writing! ——————————————————————————————————————————- To the editor and residents who read The Greenie,

Happy New Year! I hope you and your families are enjoying summertime Auckland.

We’re getting straight down to business as we face a busy year ahead.

Right now we want to hear your thoughts about the draft Annual Plan 2014/15. This annual plan focuses on financial prudence – finding ongoing savings, the lowest average rates in the history of Auckland Council (2.4 per cent) and judicious regional and community investment. Feedback is open until February 24. Submissions for the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan are open until February 28.

As we continue to transform Auckland into a truly international city I have six priorities to get Auckland moving in 2014. First is starting the City Rail Link in 2016, to unlock the full potential of our rail network. This month I’ll be taking our proposal to the Prime Minister to deliver an earlier start to the CRL, without direct impact on ratepayers.

There is also a compelling argument for extending electrification to Pukekohe, and Auckland Transport is currently working on a full technical and business study for such an extension, which would then be considered as part of the 2015-2025 Long-term Plan.

Second is the commitment to lower rates and debt, and linked to that my third priority - partnering with the private sector to look seriously at funding alternatives, like public private partnerships (PPPs) and new commercial sponsorships.

Fourth is community ownership. In the first three years after amalgamation we sometimes moved forward without taking communities with us. We need to do better. This should include better use of online tools as well as basic grass roots engagement – talking to people on their terms, not ours.

Housing is my fifth priority, using the Housing Accord to bring forward more affordable housing projects.

And last but not least is economic growth, with a focus on attracting global investment, a youth employment action plan and a digital action plan.

Auckland has the potential to compete on an equal footing with other world cities. We have a way to go but it’s a goal I believe we can realistically achieve in the next decade.

Kind Regards, Mayor Len Brown

Having NO Accent

I must apologise, dear reader, for still having an accent. I have tried, (desperately at times) to get rid of it but so far it seems that I'm just not cut out to be speaking without one. I have met many, many people since arriving here more than 41 years ago and one conversation has remained with me (and with my wife Felicity), to be repeated over and over again. It goes something like this:

Him: So where are you from, then? Me: Clarks Beach. (slight pause ) Him: I mean, before that? Me: New Lynn. (another thought) Him: I meant, originally? Me: Originally I'm from Germany but, (desperately attempting to assimilate) I've been here for more than 40 years. Him: (no hesitation at all) But you still have an accent!? (incredulity making his face glow).

Of course, what took me such a long time to realise, is the fact that the country I ended up in all these years ago is the only one where inhabitants speak without an accent!

So I made this New Year's resolve - I will finally learn to speak without one.

Being a web person, I found http://apt46.net/2012/08/23/how-to-speak-kiwinglish/ which taught me a lot. I even went as far as studying Jim Mora's "New Zild - The New Zealand Accent" (the 'accent' bit of this escaped everyone I ever had my conversation with) youtube=bV_UmOvV1vs.

But there are other lessons I'm starting to get to grips with. Short words have been made longer, like "law" has two syllables and rhymes with "lower", "athlete" is up to three, "ath-e-lete" (heard this morning). I learned to say things like 'the brikkie had brekkie with his chippy mate who was pretty knackered from all the hard yakka and had a hissy-fit because his bowl wasn't chokka'. So, you'll be pleased to know, my efforts are slowly paying dividend. I no longer pronounce my "r"s on the end of words, so "shower" sounds like "show-a", "power" like "pow-a", just as it should. And I've learned to speak much faster. I gulp down everything that looks like a vowel but I reckon I've still got a bit of stuff to get through.

So don't pack a sad, if I still sound like I'm two sammies short of a picnic. It's just that I'm buggered with all that cramming. Otherwise, things are honky dory.

Casino Night & Charity Auction

We are holding a Casino Night & Charity Auction to raise money for Tristan’s teacher aide.

Our son Tristan is 5 years old. He’s into Angry Birds, Star Wars and wearing super hero outfits, and he adores his little sister.

He also has autism. That means that his language doesn’t always make sense, and that he can’t always understand what he is being asked to do.

He has come a long way – he used to only say a few words, not look anyone in the eye, have terrible violent tantrums, eat barely enough to stay alive and scream through every bath.

Unfortunately the improvements he has made mean that he doesn’t qualify for government funding – on the surface, he just seems a bit different, hyper perhaps but not a ‘difficult’ child.

We know that if we put the effort in now, he can be an asset to society. He is incredibly smart when he focuses on something (you should see him on the ipad), so we are paying for a Teacher Aide. Three days a week costs us $300 per week, $10,000 per year. We managed the first 9 months ourselves and now need to start regular fundraising. The school has also just put in a request for RTLB support which will help a little but we’re unsure how much and if it will be the one on one that he seems to need. It’s hard to ask strangers for money so we thought if we did some fun events that people would enjoy anyway, it works for everyone.

The Casino Night will have Roulette tables and Blackjack, and we already have some offers for the charity auction and some great prizes. It will be black tie or 1920/30s costume, and include a finger food supper. We are applying for a liquor license for the night.

Friends are also helping, with one who creates specialty cakes doing a raffle of her own.

We have a donation page www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/tristan

ANGEL PIE 4 egg whites - beat until stiff Add 1 quarter teaspoon of cream of tartar 1 teaspoon of malt vinegar 1 teaspoon of vanilla Whilst the beater is going, gradually add 1 cup of castor sugar. Mixture should be firm and shiny. Pile onto a baking sheet on a tray and shape into a circle or rectangle. Leave room on the tray around the edges. Bake in a medium warm oven - about 160 degrees C for three quarters of an hour. Meringue should be crisp and very pale brown. Turn oven off and leave meringue inside until you are ready to assemble the pie. While meringue is cooking, put the four egg yolks, half a cup of castor sugar, the rind and juice of a lemon into a pyrex bowl over a pan of boiling water. Cook, stirring occasionally until thick. Let cool. If meringue crust cracks that is OK - it gets covered in cream!! To assemble:- Spread the top of the meringue with a thin layer of whipped cream, spread the lemon custard over , then cover with more whipped cream . I decorate with fresh raspberries or you could use other berries in season. Refrigerate Really, really yummy - my go-to dish for special occasions. An old "Irish" family recipe from Sue Crockett (yes really, and we thought we invented the pavlova)

Celebrating Local

Peter and Fiona Marlow

Outstanding Achievement and Services to Yachting

Only ten service awards were handed out last year by Yachting New Zealand and Clarks Beach Yacht Club had two recipients!!

Peter Marlow says he first became interested in yachts as a Venturer when Scout Master Noel Schofield organised the local boys to raise the money (cleaning out under woolsheds and grubbing thistles) to buy the materials and build two Sunburst Yachts.

These were launched between the scrub and toi toi not far from where the Yacht Club now stands.

42 years ago the Clarks Beach Yacht Club had their first club day. Peter recalls the two Scout Sunbursts being joined by Graham Coles in his Cherub, Roddy Anderson in a Catamaran, the Schofields in their Flying Ant and Ken McInnes in his OK Dinghy.

Pete recalls that the main drivers to get the club underway were Noel Schofield, Graham Coles and local councillor Ken Hosking.

The first club house was a Bach donated by Con Flinkenberg with an extension built with volunteer labour 10 years later.

Pete is the only original sailor still actively involved in the club. He has been Club Commodore four times and over the years has been involved in youth training, fundraising, building projects and all aspects of the club. He is very modest and stresses that the club has always been a team effort.

Pete still loves dinghies, he currently owns 11 yachts including a replica of a 1900 Swamp Dory that he built himself.

Fiona married this yachting mad man and her Service Award was in recognition of 17 years’ worth of all those important off the water activities such as treasurer, caterer, fundraiser and event organiser including helping to run National Championships.

Well done you two!!! Interested in sailing? The Clarks Beach Yacht Club is still a great place to start!

Until next month. Cheers Kirsty

How to empty your In-box (and keep it that way) With thanks to Robyn Pearce.

Is your in-box empty right now? Or does it still contain dozens or even hundreds of e-mail

messages?

Here’s a process that has been successfully used by hundreds of past Taming the Email

Tiger workshop participants to get their in-box empty right now and then use the 4D

Methodology to keep it that way;

Here’s how to empty your inbox, right now!

Create a new In-box subfolder - call it Backlog

Select all messages in your In-box (highlight any message and then click CTRL+A)

Drag and drop the highlighted messages to the new Backlog folder.

(ta-da, instant empty in-box!)

Now set up a recurring reminder in your Calendar to spend 15 minutes a day processing your

Backlog folder. Schedule this time for 15 minutes before your departure time at the end of the

day – this time of day will help you to be focused (and ruthless) in making a decision on each

e-mail, as you will be wanting to get it done quickly so you can get away to go home.

Use the same decision-making criteria when clearing your backlog as used for making a “4D”

decision about new e-mails.

Ditch or delete

Deal

Delegate

Decide (Where/When/Wait)

I recommend you start with the most recent e-mails first, as these are the ones that are most likely to still have actions or replies you can make. What you’ll find is that, by the time you get to the older messages, the only decision you’ll need to make is whether to delete or store in an appropriately named folder (it’s probably too late for any action now!). As a result, you’ll zoom through the older messages very quickly and it won’t seem nearly as overwhelming a task as it had first appeared. Good luck!
