The big winners and the not so big winners are in (there were no losers). This year there were four teams competing for bragging rights. The reigning champions, North Kitsap Puget Sound Anglers, were there to defend their honor. Hansville Helping Hands were there with a delicious offering as were the Eglon group, and of course, the Greater Hansville Community Center was there to round out the four teams. There was trash talk aplenty and lots of promises were made to the audience to get votes. In the end, NKPSA went home with top honors and while the other teams brought up the rear. But in reality the big winners were the audience who enjoyed samples of four really good chilis. Many folks said that the competition was very close and that every team had made their best chili yet. Simply stated the competition was hot, but not too hot. This year the fund raising aspect of the cook-off was targeted at the Eglon Community Improvement Club to assist them with building long needed ADA ramps for the Eglon Historic Schoolhouse. Due to the amazing generosity of the audience they went home with a nice lump sum to help with that proj- ect. But they still have a ways to go with their fund raising efforts for this new improvement. Although we don’t have a date yet, next year’s chili cook-off is already starting to come together with at least one new team promising to blow the lid off the competition. Stay tuned as things firm up. (Continued on Page 2) The Greater Hansville Community Center Mission Statement : “Dedicated to enriching life in the Greater Hansville Communities”

NEIGHBORS LUNCHATTENTION VETERANS OF OUR COMMUNITY!

There is such a thing as a FREE LUNCH. All community veterans are invited to come for soup, half sandwich and small dessert on Wednesday, November 16 at noon. We

want to honor you for your service to our country. Also, on that date we have a special program planned. Mary Ryan, Curator of the US Naval Undersea Museum has arranged for us to hear about their Thresher Submarine Display recently finished at the museum - this is the submarine that sunk in the Atlantic Ocean on April 10, 1963 with 129 people on board.

Community members interested in this program are also invited to attend this or any Neighbor’s Lunch event. This is an open event. The cost to attendees is $6 each (of course veterans are exempt from this fee this month). We will need to know how many lunches to prepare so if you are coming, please call Judy Hutchinson at 360-638-2871 and mention that you are a veteran at that time please. We hope to see you there to visit with your neighbors and to enjoy a bite to eat with us. You might even reserve December 21 to join us for a Christmas musical program to welcome the holi-days. Questions? Contact Lois Lee at 360-638-1973.

This n’ ThatDid you notice activity at Norwegian Point Park Boathouse last week? Happy days! There is a new roof and just in time! It’s bone dry inside according to Chuck Strahm this morn-ing (October 14). After well over an inch of rainfall overnight that’s great news! All the treasures you will be donating for next year’s Rummage Sale won’t have to be covered in blue tarps any more!

A quick reminder, the Fall Book Sale is on Friday, November 4 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm and Saturday, November 5 at 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. We have a tremendous selection for your fall and winter reading! Our volunteer organizers spend a lot of time organizing the many, many books that have been donated over the months. Come browse the rows to find a few perfect books! The price is right!

DAVID GEORGE GORDONSlugs and Snail: Advanced Tactics

David George Gordon is the award-wining author of The Eat-a-Bug Cook-book and 18 other titles about orcas

and gray whales, cockroaches, tarantulas, land snails and the Sasquatch. The New York Times called his-Field Guide to the Slug “gripping”. Also, the New York Times deemed The Eat-a-Bug Cookbook one of the best cookbooks for 2013. Mr. Gordon has an excellent sense of humor so we will learn a great deal and have a good time doing so. He has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, Time Magazine and National Geographic Kids and appeared on Conan O’Brian, The Wil Wheaton Project and The View. He’s spoken at the American Museum of Natural History, San Diego Zoo, California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco Botanical Garden, MASS MoCA and many other venues. A Note to the Members: We will have our annual Arts & Crafts Show on February 8, 2017. We would love for you to partici-pate and show everyone your creative side. Please, consider creating your arts and crafts projects to share and show with friends in February. We will have a lot of fun.

Flotsam Jetsam Garden Club begins at 9:00 am, Wednesday, November 9, at the Greater Hansville Community Center with coffee and refreshments. The business meeting is from 9:30-10:45 am. The featured program begins 11:00 am.

HANSVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

On Friday, November 18, the Hansville Historical Society will meet as usual at 10:00 am at the Greater Hansville Community Center. We are preparing for our annual

meeting scheduled for February by inviting those who have an interest in the history of the North Kitsap area to join us.

Some of our members are not the “old timers” but simply want to explore how this area became what it is today. Others are representatives of old families and exchanges between the two groups educates us all. Now, we are looking for those who have World War II stories to share (whether here in Hans-ville or elsewhere). Our meetings usually include programs of sharing information. Last month, Storm Smole spoke about clock and watchmaking. If you would like to help our efforts, please call Lois Lee 360-638-1973.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN PARTY

After a year’s break, the Greater Hansville Community Center is happy to announce the return of the Hallow-een party. There will be activities for children of all ages.

Think of this as a Halloween Haunted House and Costume Party. There will be costume contests for 4 age groups: Ages 0 through 5, 6 through 12, 13 through 15, and ages 16 and above.

Each group will be judged by the other three age groups. There will be a few games like a bean bag toss, a ring toss, pin the spider on the web and some others that we’re still dreaming up. There will be a couple of not too scary Halloween houses inside the main hall for trick or treating and we’ll have some of Aunt Mary’s Bloody punch, and some Haunted cookies to snack on. If you’d like to bring Halloween treats of your own and some to share please do. Adults are welcome to bring their favorite evening beverage.

Festivities will start at 6:00 pm and will wrap up at 8:00 pm. And best of all the Greater Hansville Community Center is throwing this party for free, no tickets to buy, no raffles to pur-chase. So come on up, bring the kids, get dressed up and have some good ol’ Halloween fun. We do ask that all children be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you’d like to get involved with the decorating and set up or clean up let us know. Just send an email to hansvillecoasters @gmail.com or call Chuck Strahm at 360-638-2882. There’s al-ways room for more helpers and new ideas.

NOT JUST FOR ANGLERS!

November is the time to finally get back on the water after a long politically-moti-vated layoff. Fears of weak coho returns

turned out to be unfounded, as Tribal gillnets produced surpluses of larger than average fish.

Blackmouth fishing opens November 1 in areas 9, 10, and 12. Also, keep an eye out for Chums on the surface. Some lucky Member will see his or her name on the new “Jim Hopper Fighting Chum” annual trophy!

Winter crabbing is open, so make sure to get your Winter Catch Record before you go. With meaningful fishing opportunities constantly under attack, many fishing clubs of historical sig-nificance are struggling to survive. It is more important than ever to GET INVOLVED!

The next meeting of the North Kitsap Puget Sound Anglers will be November 9, 2016 at the Driftwood Key Clubhouse. Dinner at 6 pm.

COON BAY SAILING CLUB

Our November meeting will be held Thursday, November 17 at 7:00 pm at the Driftwood Key clubhouse.

George Lefler has taken the helm as mod-erator for the coming year. We continue to meet in a casual format with occasional guest speakers, discussions about sailing destinations, ground tackle, navigation, off shore experiences, boat maintenance and plans for next years sailing schedule.

New members are always welcome. Boat ownership is not necessary. For more information, call Bruce Cosacchi at 360-638 -2074.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE SUCCESS OF CANDIDATES NIGHT!By Judy Tallman

Thank you for all of the community participation to make Candidate’s Night a success. It has been an every other year event of the Greater Hansville Community Center’s

programs since the building was built in 1988. On October 7, local and state candidates for elected office gathered with 100 plus community members to answer questions submitted by the audience and enjoy home baked pies and conversation.

The West Room looked patriotic. The pies were delicious. The questions were carefully crafted. The candidates presented their goals and ideas for bettering our community. It was an

informative and fun community evening.

CRIBBAGE SEASON IS HERE!

Cribbage begins again November 2, at 6:30 pm at the Driftwood Key Clubhouse and will continue on the first and third Wednesdays for the rest of the Cribbage

season.

If you’ve never played, experts will be there to teach you this addictive game. Cribbage also allows you to win the Lottery, have your face on the cover of Rolling Stone as well as obtain everlasting emotional peace. Come join us and find out.

HANSVILLE HELPING HANDS“The mission of the Hansville Helping Hands, a Washington State Nonprofit cor-poration, is to assist in serving the needs of our community and neighbors, and to continue to manage the Hansville Cemetery in a manner that maintains the spirit

and heart of the community”

November is here! Yeah, my favorite month! Why? Because it is Craft Fair Season! Join us November 12, for the “Art From the Heart” craft fair at Driftwood Key

Clubhouse (37608 Vista Key Drive, Hansville). The generous Driftwood Key Community is sponsoring this event, giving us a free kitchen to run our bake sale from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Come early as the fresh bread always sells the fastest. If you wish to contribute to the bake sale you can drop it off the night before the event at the clubhouse or the morning of the event! If you have any questions, email Angi Jensen at [email protected].

Our November meeting is scheduled for November 16 which is a week earlier due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Same loca-tion, the Driftwood Key Clubhouse, same time 2:00 pm. This is when we hold elections for officers.

Please check our website for dates just in case something changes - www.hansville.org - click on Members and Organi-zations, then you will see Hansville Helping Hands, and then click on that. Thanks MJ Strahm for maintaining this for us!

Also, coming is our holiday party: if you want to come - email Angi Jensen and she can tell you all about it or again check out our website noted above.

As for December fundraising: sadly we are taking a year off from the Holiday Home Tour so stay tuned for next year. Huge thanks to the Connolly’s, Suzanne Perry and the Kellogg’s for being willing to be on our tour though. Maybe next year!

Well, that about wraps it up for now. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

November 4 | Contest Deadline

NKF&R NEWSBy Michèle Laboda

Get your fire escape plans done and if you’ve got chil-dren in local elementary schools, returned to school by November 4. Our annual Fire Escape Planning contest

not only helps families prepare for a safe escape, it also nets ice cream sundae parties for classrooms with the highest percent-age of correctly-executed plans.

Proper plans include at least two ways out of every room and one family meeting place outside. Firefighters provide the funds for the parties because they know the importance of working smoke alarms and fire escape plans better than any-one. In fact, they’re so vital for everyone that even if you don’t have children at home, we’ll serve you some ice cream if you bring us your completed fire escape plan. Call us at 360-297-3619 for more information. As of this writing, we haven’t set the date for our next CPR and AED Class, but we’ll have one in November. Check our web site at www.nkfr.org or give us a call to get the date. Check your Pulse! Look for the latest edition of the Pulse, the newsletter that we publish jointly with our neighbors at Poulsbo Fire Department, to arrive in mailboxes in mid-November. It will include updates on what we’ve done with the additional funds that voters approved for us in 2014, tips for avoiding the most common wintertime fires and our useful emergency medical information cards. Speaking of winter fires, avoid one of the more common causes by having a certified professional perform your annual chimney cleaning and inspection before you start using your fireplace or woodstove this season. From our family to yours, we wish you a happy, safe and abundant Thanksgiving holiday!

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Seeking New Volunteers to Prepare Free Income Taxes

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aid (http://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide/) service is seeking new local volunteers to prepare income taxes in communi-

ties throughout North Kitsap. This is a free service performed nation-wide in cooperation with the IRS. Neither tax pre-parers nor clients need have any connection with AARP to participate.

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax-filing help to most taxpayers. We’re looking for compassionate and friendly individuals to join our team of local volunteers for the upcom-ing tax season.

As a volunteer, you’ll receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. And, as our current volunteers tell us, you’ll not only learn new skills, but also get a great feel-ing from helping others. If you’re interested in making a differ-ence in your community, we’ve got a role for you!

Good with the fine print? Be a volunteer tax preparer/coun-selor. You’ll work with taxpayers directly, filling out and filing tax returns. Experience isn’t necessary — we’ll provide train-ing and IRS certification. Check online for more information. In North Kitsap County, services are provided by volunteers at:

Poulsbo – Martha and Mary Health and RehabKingston – Village Green Community CenterLittle Boston – Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe at the Elder Center

Prospective volunteers should contact Ed Ramey at [email protected] , phone 360-638-1525 or 360-941-7591.

GHCC WARMING STATIONBy George Briese

The Greater Hansville Community Center (GHCC) Warm-ing Station will be open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm the first day following the first 12 hours of an extended power out-

age due to heavy winds, rain, snow, ice storms or a combina-tion thereof and no estimate for a repair on that day has been provided. The GHCC Warming Station will provide a comfort-able environment and warm nutrition during the day, all the while assisting individuals in trying to locate friends, neigh-bors or relatives that can provide continuing comfort for peo-ple displaced by the outage.

GHCC does not qualify as a “Warming Shelter” per the Ameri-can Red Cross “sheltering” criteria because we do not provide showers or overnight dormitory accommodations.

The GHCC Warming Station will continue to be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on subsequent days until the power is restored. The GHCC Warming Station is not able to provide overnight (shelter) accommodations during this type of emergency. In the event of a major natural disaster emergency like a tsunami, earthquake, flood, or tornado, the GHCC Warming Station will provide overnight coverage and evacuation as necessary with aid of King/Kitsap County American Red Cross Emergency Response Team personnel, vehicles and supplies. For infor-mation regarding the GHCC Warming Station, please contact George Briese, [email protected] or 360-638-1499.

RUMMAGE SALE RESULTSBy Connie Gordon

B ased on the number of people who continue to ask, “so how much did the Rummage Sale make this year”? The answer is it was a very good sale in August thanks

to all the volunteers who worked so faithfully through out the year preparing items for the sale. AND thanks to all of you, who selected your precious, lightly used treasures to bring to Saturday drop off for the sale!

Here’s the numbers from our treasurer, Lindsey. We grossed $41,797.00 and after expenses we have a net of $37,997! Of course there’s always something waiting to be done with the income. The exterior of the Community Center and Annex were painted, a new roof applied to the Center, and the kitchen is getting new refrigeration and a new look this month! Maintenance, upkeep and upgrading the facility are an ongoing expense. We are so appreciative for your partici-pation! Thank you!

HANSVILLE GREENWAY UPDATE

Blackberries taste good in pie, but their vines can be a real problem when they encroach on trails or

other open spaces. Such was the case along the Buck Lake Park entry area to the Greenway and the Otter Meadow. A group of volunteers including, Mike Szerlog, Art Ellison, John Brock and Jim

DeRoy held a mowing session and worked for several hours cutting back a large stand of the fast growing vines. According to Art, the vines were approaching old growth stage!

Using a big gas-powered mower and a sickle bar trimmer, they cut the large clumps of vines along the north side of the trail entering the meadow, the west side of the trail going toward Buck Lake and up to the trail that goes through Welcome Wood near the Greenway entrance. This makes walking through these areas easier without getting snagged on the obnoxious vines. However, there are still several clumps that need to be mowed to clear the entire Otter Meadow. Another project for another day.

We are proud to announce that the Hansville Greenway was selected to be the recipient of a special $500.00 Community Service Award from the Starbucks Corporation. Last Summer a team of Kingston Starbucks Drive-through employees, led by team leader and Hansville resident - Jeff Gibbons volunteered for some rather labor intensive trail maintenance projects. Star-bucks matched their volunteer hours with dollars. Our sincere thanks to the Kingston team and to Starbucks.

A HOLIDAY “THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEERS” PARTY: On Thurs-day, December 1 the Hansville Greenway Association will have a meeting with a special “Thank You to our Volunteers” theme. The meeting will begin at 6:00 pm instead of the regular 7:00 pm starting time so mark it on your calendar. There will be hol-iday-themed snacks and refreshments and a video about the Greenway will be shown. Even if you haven’t volunteered, you are welcome to come and learn more about the Greenway and how to volunteer. The meeting is open to everyone to cele-brate the holiday, but a short business meeting with election of next year’s officers will be held near the end. Please come and join us to say thanks to those who have volunteered to make the Hansville Greenway one of the best trail systems and wild-life corridors in Kitsap County.

EGLON COMMUNITY NEWS

It’s time to get the holiday season started in Eglon. We’ll begin with the traditional Candlelight Thanksgiving Pot-luck held in the Schoolhouse on Saturday, November 12

at 6:00 pm. The beauty of a potluck is that each family brings one dish and miraculously the whole community is fed. So please join us! Bring one dish to share, your own plates and silverware. We’ll prepare the turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy. Coffee, tea and apple cider will be provided.

The Eglon Holiday Sale is scheduled for Saturday, December 3 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Schoolhouse will be open for shopping through neighborhood vendors with lots of handcrafted gifts, holiday decorations and tables full of won-derful baked goods. Of course we will have the traditional cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven and endless pots of old fashioned perked coffee. We’re counting on our talented neighbors for donations of holiday favorite baked sale items: pies, cookies, rolls, pastries, muffins, quick breads, candies and holiday treats to name a few. As per County regulations all items must be wrapped before being brought to the Schoolhouse. The building will be open at 8:00 am for early drop offs, but if you need to make other arrangements please give Jackie Holbrook a call at 360-638-1949. We thank you in advance for all of your contributions. The proceeds from this event support scholarships in the spring and the ongoing upkeep of the 1922 Eglon Schoolhouse.

Finally, you’ll want to mark this last 2016 event on your cal-endar, the Eglon Community Christmas Program. This year it will be held on Saturday, December 10 at 7:00 pm in the Schoolhouse and promises to be an evening of music, joy, children’s performances and a visit from Santa. The chil-dren’s rehearsal and decorating party will also take place on December 10 from10:00 am to 12:00 pm. More information about this event will be found in the December Log issue.

Point No Point Lighthouse 2016 Season Recap

By Libby AndersonFriends of Point No Point Board Member

We closed out the season with 6,707 visitors, set-ting a new record. The highest number recorded in one day was Saturday, August 6 with 216 visi-

tors tallied. We greeted travelers from 48 different states (all but Delaware and Rhode Island). The 20 countries represented were Australia, Argentina, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Ger-many, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela and Vietnam.

Our talented docents logged over 1,051 volunteer hours. Hansville resident Frank Gang contributed 74 hours. Other valuable docents were Dave and Libby Ander-son, Elyse Cregar, Sharon Clepper, Shelley Douglas, Bob Ferguson, Sue Fowler, John and Linda Golden, Bob and Sharron Ham, Helen Hoover, Kip and JoAnn Johnson, Dave Lee, Barbara Neff, Dan Piper, Lori Raymaker, Dannie and Sylvia Ross, Lorrie Scott, and Jim and Barb Simmons.

Katie Erickson, Shelley Douglas and Sonja Selboe work with Marie Vincent in the museum gift store. Marie Vin-cent and Jerry Water volunteer hundreds of hours in that venue. Our visitors comment on our friendly and infor-mative docents and being so happy to find the lighthouse open. We continue to outreach to Wolfle and Gordon Elementary second graders as well as many special tours including the U.S. Lighthouse Society’s Puget Sound tour and as a destination for the Kitsap County Museum’s “Eat Your Way Through Kitsap County” program.

Culminating our great season was the Fall All Members’ Party. Those attending had a great time while listening to guest speaker, Gene Bullock speaking on the topic of Important Bird Areas, of which Point No Point is desig-nated as such. The yearly fundraiser raffle for two nights’ stay in the Keeper’s Quarters was won by Rich’s Custom Seats in Kingston.

We continue to represent the Friends of Point No Point at Poulsbo Farmers’ Markets. Those days have been great community outreach, as well as providing our organiza-tion with new docents and new members.

December events will be outlining the exterior of the lighthouse with lights and decorating the interior on Saturday, December 3. This makes it festive for our visi-tors. We would appreciate the donation of homemade cookies for this event and also need help decorating and hosting it.

Please email your desire to become involved with your closest lighthouse and historic treasure to Libby Ander-son, at [email protected].
