CONGRA TULATIONS Congratulations to Cantor Schwartz on his Senior Recital. The members of the temple who attended the Cantor's recital had a remarkable experience. Rabbi Brickman, who has attended many such recitals, noted that he had never seen the response that he witnessed at Cantor Schwartz's recital. At the conclusion of the concert, the audience offered a standing ovation the likes of which the School of Sacred Music had never seen before. This was truly an unprecedented show of respect and admiration for Cantor Schwartz. The members of the congregation who were present were privileged to share in

. this very special occasion. Thank you to Cantor Sergei and Lena Schwartz for inviting the members of the Temple to attend the Cantor's Senior Recital, and thanks, as well, to them and to Rabbi Brickman for hosting the luncheon following the concert .

JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE PASSOVER APPEAL As Passover approaches, we remind you that the Jewish Family and Counseling Service needs our help in order to provide Passover food for needy Jewish families in our community. Last year, 150 packages were delivered. This year, we expect that number to increase, so we hope that you will be as generous as possible. Don't delay! Send your contribution to the Temple now! Checks should be made payable to "JF&CS Passover & Relief Fund" and should be sent to the Temple.

The actual delivery of the Passover packages will take place on Sunday, April 16 at 9:00 a.m. The packages will be prepared on Saturday night, April 15 after Shabbat. Both the packing and the deliveries take place at Congregation B'nai Jacob on 176 West Side Avenue in Jersey City. On the morning of the deliveries, there is a need for both drivers and "schleppers." Drivers, who cannot carry the packages, will be paired with teenagers and young adults who will carry the packages to the recipients' apartments. We hope you will help!

SAVE THE DATE

The Jewish Family and Counseling Service will hold its annual breakfast on Sunday, May 21 at Congregation B 'nai Jacob. The honorees will be Sally Mason of Bayonne, Heidi Rosen of. Hoboken, and our own member, Shirley N. Porte. We hope that many Temple members will attend in order to pay tribute to Shirley and support the work of the Jewish Family and Counseling Service. For more information or if you want to place an ad in the journal in tribute to the honorees, please call the JF&CS office at 201-436-1299

OUTREACH CONNECTIONS - APRIL

THE CELEBRATION OF PASSOVER

The goal of the seder is participation by everyone. Whether an individual participates by reading, listening or eating, we are commanded to remember that once we were slaves in Egypt and now we are free. Every year, 'we repeat the seder, and every year, we hear something different or understand a little more. Every year, we renew our commitment to our people and our tradition.

This year, Pesach begins with the first Seder on Wednesday, April 19 and concludes on Wednesday, April 26, with the observance if Yizkor.

THE MEANING OF PESACH

The four names for Pesach retiect four aspects of the festival: • CHAG HA PESACH is linked with both the Biblical account of the tenth plague, when

God passed over the homes of the Israelites, and with the Pesach offering that was brought to the Temple in Jerusalem.

• CHAG HA MATZOT, the "Festival of Unleavened Bread: is an outgrowth of a Canaanite agricultural festival and reflects the centrality of matzah in the celebration of Pesach. . ,

• CHAG HA AVIV, the "Festival of Spring: reflects the seasonal significance 'Of Pesach.

• Z'MAN CHERUTEYNU, the "Season of our Freedom: marks the attainment of , freedom from Egyptian bondage by the ancient Israelites.

WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR A SEDER?

1. A Haggadah for each participant: The Haggadah retells the story of the Exodus, contains the order of prayers, rituals, readings and songs for the Pesach seder.,

2; Festival candles and candlesticks. 3. A Kiddush cup and wine for all participants. (Grape juice is a permissible substitute). 4. Elijah's Cup: Elijah is a symbol of a potential Messianic Age and we set aside a

special cup as an expression of our hope and confidence in the ultimate betterment of society.

5. Three whole Matzot: The top and bottom correspond to the two challot of Shabbat and the third piece represents the matzah, which Jewish law specifically ordains for Pesach.

6. The Seder Plate with the following: a roasted 'shankbone, Maror or bitter herbs, Karpas or parsley, a roasted egg, Charoset and a dish of salt water.

(Adapt~d from The Jewish Home, by Rabbi Daniel Syme. -

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS School will be closed for Passover vacation on

Sunday, April 23 Wednesday, April 19 & 26

Our Religious School students helped to make our Purim celebration especially festive and meaningful this year. Our Sunday School students and their parents delivered "Misloach Manot" packages ofhamantaschen and candy to all of the "Kosher Meals on Wheels" recipients. In doing so, they made the holiday more joyous for the homebound senior citizens in our community. On the eve of Purim, we held our Purim Family Service and Megillah Reading. If you were not there, you really missed something special, and you should plan on joining us next year for what is certainly one of the most unusual services you will ever see. Thank you to Lena Schwartz and the students in our 4th/5th Grade Hebrew School class who acted out the Megillah. Thanks also Cantor Sergei Schwartz and Rabbi Brickman for making this year' s Purim celebration one of the best ever. Special thanks to "Prince of Pizza" on Bergen Avenue who donated the pizza for our Religious School Purim Party.

COMMUNITY HOLOCAUST OBSERVANCE

Our community Yom HaShoah commemoration will be held on Sunday evening, May 7!h at 7:00 p.m. at Congregation B'nai Jacob, 176 West Side Avenue. Rabbi Brickman will participate in this commemoration of the Holocaust, which is always a very moving ceremony. We hope that you will mark your calendars and plan on joining us for this important event. . The annual Holocaust Commemoration sponsored by the Jewish War Veterans will be held at Liberty State Park on Sunday April 30, 2000 at 2:00 p.m.
