THE GREAT DEPRESSION:NEW DEAL;

AGRICULTURAL RECOVERY• 1933, Agricultural Adjustment Admin.- paid farmers to the #
of crops
• prices & stimulate overall recovery
• Farmers pushed sharecroppers off their land
• S. Tenant Farmers Union- urged the gov’t to force landowners to share fed. payments w/ the tenants
• 1936, AAA declared unconstitutional
REVITALIZING A REGION
• 5/1933, TN Valley Authority- aided a 7 state rural region fighting disease, literacy, malnutrition & poverty
• Provided electricity, flood control, disease control & recreational facilities
• Battled malaria, illiteracy, & standard of living
• Criticized= BIG GOV’T
FIGHTING DISCRIMINATION
• New Deal= relief for all races, some programs discriminated
• CCC, TVA, NRA
• FDR feared political backlash from S. Democrats
FIGHTING DISCRIMINATION• FDR named more than 100 blacks to posts in the fed. gov’t
• Thanks to Eleanor Roosevelt- passionate about civil rights
• Goal= open greater ed. & economic opportunities

• American Indians= bleak- poor housing, poor health care, & malnutrition
• Culture stripped away= Dawes Act- ended tribal gov’t & sold off tribal land
• American Indian Def. Assoc.- protected religious freedom & tribal property
• Reforms law = Indian Reorganization Act of 1934= reversed Dawes Act
• Funds for tribal business ventures & college ed.
• Promote & preserve culture
