NEW CH APTER S : A

FOUR-FOLD BEG INN IN G

Dear Friends and Benefactors of SOLT,

It is with great joy that I greet yo for the rst time as Rector

of the American Region Hose of Formation for SOLT! After

spending the rst ten years of my priesthood in or beloved mission in Bene

Viejo del Carmen, Belize, Central America, I embar with a sense of awe and en-

thsiasm on this new phase of ministry: serving men in their formation in religios

life and towards priesthood.

Last smmer saw two signicant events that directly affected or hose in Detroit.

The rst was the ordination of six of or men to the transitional diaconate. This

academic year, for of the new deacons are serving in or missions while two oth-

ers have retrned to Detroit for their nal year of theological stdies. Their pres-

ence in the hose is a continal sign of hope and encoragement to all. It is exciting

to experience their yothfl joy as they discover the thrill of ordained ministry.

The second event was the election of Father Peter Marsaleto the position of

General Priest Servant. Father Peter moves from Rector here in Detroit and leaves

a noticeable hole in his absence. However, his intellectal gifts, clarity in decision-

maing, and his love for commnity life particlarly cltivated dring his years in

Detroit, help mae him a most welcome choice to lead SOLT.

One nal element adds to the sense of newness and growth this year: the addi-

tion of three newly professed brothers to or commnity. These new brothers

inagrate a development in formation, in that two of them are on the vocational

path towards Permanent Brotherhood. Having completed two years of forma-

tionaspirancy and novitiatethey arrive for two years of in-hose intellectal

formation. Their presence ronds ot the commnity here, helping s to live to

a greater degree the Ecclesial Team aspect of or charism, whose essence is the

different vocations living and serving as one.

As for me personally, the shift ot of mission life has been a challenging yet

welcome one. A good priest friend said to me, Yor rst parish is lie yor rst

loveand I do believe hes right. It is with the assrance of hope that I loo

forward to growing deeper in love for God and His Chrch in the ministry of

formation: to watching, catalyzing and participating in the Holy Spirits beatifl

wor of preparing men after His own heart and servants for or Fathers vineyard.

SOLT has begn the Gray Robes Formation Program, a program that helpspeople spport the formation of SOLT Brothers in the American Region.

Thirteen of s discern life as priests; six of s discern a lifelong commitment

as consecrated brothers. We all need assistance to flll or vocations.

If yo give to the Gray Robes Formation Program (nless yo specify a

particlar vocational trac), yor generosity will serve the needs of the

entire band of brothers. The vast majority of contribtions address or

greatest expense, seminarian tition.

In addition to sharing the brdens of bills and the joys of donations, both

vocations share a common life of commnity and prayer. Annal promises

of poverty, chastity and obedience let s share in intimacy with Jess. Afterve years, we may mae these promises again, not for one year, bt for life.

Please pray for Brother Beaand Brother Jeremyas they discern maing

Perpetal Promises throgh which they wold become lifelong brothers of

the Society of Or Lady of the Most Holy Trinity.

After Perpetal Promises, some brothers are ordained, rst as deacons,

then as priests. Priests norish or Christian life by serving as ministers of the sacraments. Permanent Brothers perform

specialized ministries and open their lives to others so as to commnicate the fraternal friendship of God. Throgh part-

nership with yo, the Gray Robes Formation Program helps men offer themselves to Christ and His Chrch.

OF THE POOR

Elizabeth, lled with the Holy Spirit, blesses Marys life, her

faith, and the frit of her womb (L 1:4145). Marys response

is nown as the Magnicat (L 1:4655), and it is from thisprayer that we learn mch abot Marys spiritality. In

light of the Magnicat, it seems tting that SOLTs Marian

charism sends s to areas of deepest apostolic need.

When she receives Elizabeths blessing, how icly Marys

thoghts trn otward toward both God and the poor!

First, Mary acnowledges that God has given her a most

special love. Second, Mary sings in adoration while gazing

at God. She does not sing of a God who lives ot there,

distant and cold. Her womb proclaims that God draws near

to save s. Third, for the majority of her song, Mary cel-

ebrates that God comes to save the poor. The prod will be

broght down while those who hmbly entrst their lives

to God will receive salvation. Mary sings in thansgiving.

Becoming pregnant with the Savior does not distance her

from those who sffer. With maternal care, Marys prayer

moves with God toward the hmble. She rejoices that al-

mighty God wold come down to save sinners lie sthe

poor, the mee, and the lowly!

Why do we sing the Magnicat? We now God personally

loves s. We gaze at the Trinity in adoration, and we move

with joy to help hmble people respond to Gods love. The

Holy Spirit who lls Mary with love now gives s a mission.

SOLTs charism ass s to be Gods love for people in areas

of deepest apostolic need. As a Marian commnity, how

beatifl it is to trn with God toward the poor. With Je-

ss, we get to mae haste to serve or brothers and sisters

in spirital and material poverty. These bonds of service

and friendship help all of s respond to Gods mercy. With

Mary, let s sing the Lords name. Jess is the only song

that saves.
