My Dear Friends in Christ,

I am delighted to be the instructor in the Sunday Schoolclass for middle and high school youth. We need andwant more students. I am asking that the parents andguardians of our youth to make a special effort to helpthem get to Sunday School.

A good basic knowledge of the Bible is needed in orderfor our youth to deal with that which the world has tooffer them. Our class will not only learn how to read the Bible, butwe will also learn how to study the Bible by using Bibledictionaries, handbooks, maps and other tools.

I urge all parent’s, guardians and interested persons tohelp our young people get to Sunday School. Ouryouth need the strong foundation that Sunday Schoolwill provide.

Yours in Christ,

Ms. Loretta Davis

Huffington Post Article

Palm Sunday is a Christian feast that marks the beginning of Holy Week and com-memorates Jesus' triumphant return to the city of Jerusalem. In 2011, Palm Sundaywas celebrated on April 17.

Although the return to Jerusalem is recounted in all fourcanonical gospels, the traditions of Palm Sunday arelargely based on the description from the Gospel ofJohn.

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes inthe name of the Lord!" (John 12:12-13)

By waving him with palm branches and using them to cover his path as he rodeinto the city on a donkey, the crowd indicated that he was revered and respected onthe level of royalty.

To celebrate the occasion, many Christian churches -- both Catholic and Protestantas well as the Eastern churches -- distribute palm leaves to congregation memberswho then carry them in a procession either inside or outside of the church. Oftenthe palm fronds are knotted or woven into small crosses that can be kept by indi-viduals in their homes as a reminder of the lessons of Holy Week. In areas of theworld where palm leaves are not readily available, other nativeplants may be substituted and Palm Sunday may be alternativelyreferred to as Yew Sunday, Willow Sunday, or whatever else isused in that locality.

The liturgy for Palm Sunday services usually follows the palm pro-cessions with a reading of the Passion story -- a meaningful re-minder that many of the same crowd that welcomed Jesus to Jeru-salem would participate in the mob that cheered for his death lessthan a week later.

For Christians, Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the final weekof Lent and the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus onGood Friday and his resurrection on Easter. It is also connected tothe following year's liturgical calendar as the palm leaves are oftenreturned to the church to be burned in the next year's Ash Wednes-day rituals.

On Sunday July 17, 2011, Rhodra Anderson-Brown spoke to our congregationabout a diocesan-wide campaign called NetsforLife. During the 195th AnnualConvention of the Diocese, Bishop Curry announced this campaign to fight ma-laria. The campaign will run until the next convention in January 2012. Thegoal is to raise 40,000 nets, which is about one net for each communicant. Ifthis goal is reached, up to 120,000 lives could be saved from Malaria in Africa. One net costs only $12 and provides safety for up to three people, mostlywomen and children, from mosquitoes during the night.I have been named St. Stephen’s NetsforLife Representative and have chal-lenged each of our church members, even children, to purchase at least one net.The challenge has also gone out to all St. Stephen’sorganizations to step up to the plate to make con-tributions as well. The ECW has already plannedto make a donation of at least $100. If othergroups followed this example, we would make anoticeable impact in helping meet the 40,000 netoverall goal.On Sunday August 21st and September 18, 2011, aspecial offering will be taken up for this specialcampaign to be sent to the Episcopal Relief &Development for the purchase of these nets. St.Stephen’s has set an individual goal of 100 nets. Iknow, it may seem like a lot, but it can be donewith a little effort! We have already gotten two in-dividual contributions, with the first one donated by Miss Neenah Anderson, who is a 10 yr. old member of our church. This reminds me so much of the por-tion of Isaiah 11:6 in the Bible that states “and a little child shall lead them”. Iwas so moved by young Neenah’s generosity and concern for our neighbors onthe other side of the world.A display for the NetsforLife campaign is in progress in our church’s fellowshiphall that will serve as a reminder of the campaign and its importance in makinga difference in the lives of others.

On Wednesday June 28th, the youth ofSt. Stephen’s, along with three chaper-ones, Fr. Sintim, Tim Brown and RhodraAnderson-Brown, left our church inroute to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee tospend two days of recreation and relaxa-tion in a beautiful three floor SmokyMountain luxury cabin equipped withHot Tub, Playstation 2, Pool Table, Foos-ball and the most beautiful mountainviews imaginable! While there, theyouth enjoyed go-cart driving and shop-ping as well. However, the highlight ofthe trip was going whitewater rafting!Wow, talk about fun to the 10th power! The rafting adventure took place at“Rafting in the Smokies” in GatlinburgTennessee. It was an experience thatmost of the group had never had before, but enjoyed greatly! There is some talkalready about doing it again! If we dodecide to embark on another rafting trip,it would be great to have more adults togo, even the senior adults. Yes, I said“senior adults! “Rafting in the Smokies”offers courses that accommodate chil-dren as young as 3 years old or peopleas old as well, Methuselah! Seriously,it’s no joke! It is truly an adventure theentire family would enjoy!
