Inaddition,theapplicantshouldhaveasuperiorrecordinundergraduatecoursesinliterature.AnapplicantwhohasanM.A.degreeinasingleliteratureandwhomeetstheotherspecialrequirementsmayalsobeeligibleforadmission.
Applicantsmustpossesslinguisticandliterarypreparationsufficienttoqualifyforadmissiontograduatecoursesinaforeignliteratureoftheirchoice.Theyarealsorequiredtohaveareadingknowledgeofanapprovedsecondforeignlanguage,whichshouldpermitthemtoreadliteratureinthislanguagewithease.Thisknowledgeofasecondforeignlanguagemaybetestedbyawrittenexamination.Anapplicantpresentingonlyoneforeignlanguagemaybeadmittedtomatriculationconditionally.Anyconditionsmustbesatisfied,normallythroughexamination,beforethecompletionof15credits.

ApplicantsarerequiredtotakeonlytheverbalandquantitativeaptitudetestsoftheGraduateRecordExamination.Noadvancedtestinasubjectareaisrequired.InternationalstudentsmustalsofurnishtheTOEFLscoresinadditiontothegeneralGREtest. StudentsadmittedascandidatesfortheM.A.whowanttoapplyforthePh.D.mustfinishalldegreerequirementsfortheM.A.beforeapplyingforadmissionascandidatesforthePh.D.Anexceptiontothisrulemaybemadeinthecaseofexceptionallywell‐qualifiedstudents,asjudgedbytheAdmissionsandAwardsCommittee. Anabstractofthedissertationproposal(tentypedpages)andastatementontheprogressoftheresearch(amaximumoffivetypedpages)mustbesubmittedwiththeapplication.Studentsareadvisedtokeepinmindthatthereviewcommitteeswillbecomposedoffacultyfromvariousprograms.Proposalsshould,therefore,beclearlywrittenandjargon‐free.
2. Twolettersofreferencemustbesubmitted,onefromtheapplicant'sdissertationadviserandonefromanotherfacultymemberintheapplicant'sdiscipline.3. ApplicationsshouldbedirectedtotheAssociateProvostforAcademicAffairsthroughtheapplicant'sExecutiveOfficerandmustbesubmittedbyFebruary1.Noextensionofthisdeadlinewillbeallowed.
B.StudentTravelandResearchFund Eligibility:Applicantsmustbematriculatedstudentsregisteredduringthesemesterforwhichthestipendisrequested.Applicationsareconsideredonthebasisoffinancialneedandareprocessedona"firstcome"basis. Purpose:TheStudentTravelandResearchFundprovidesstipends(limitedtooneperacademicyearperstudent)intheamountof$300.00orlessforthefollowing: 1. graduateprogramsthroughouttheUnitedStatesisconsideredanunsatisfactorygrade. ArecordsheetforeachstudentisonfileintheProgramoffice.Thissheetnotescoursestaken,
examinationspassed,andextracurricularactivities.Eachacademicyear,theExecutiveCommitteewillconductastudentreview,withparticularattentiontostudentswhosegradelevelsorratesofprogress

Dictionarieswillbeallowedonlyintheancient,classical,andmedievalexaminations,unlessastudentis
specializinginClassics,inwhichcaseoneoftheexaminationsmustbepassedwithoutadictionary. TheLatinexaminationconsistsofachoiceoffourpassages,oneeachinClassicalandMedievalprose

have passed at least two graduate courses totaling at least six credits in the literature of that

andtoTheGraduateSchoolandUniversityCenterprogram. InaccordancewiththepolicysetdownbytheBoardofTrustees,theExecutiveOfficershalltrytoensure
thatdepartmentchairsgivepreference,whenrecruitingpart‐timefaculty,toqualifiedstudentsenrolled
inthedoctoralprogram. II. ExecutiveCommittee TheExecutiveCommitteeshallconsistoftheExecutiveOfficer,theDeputyExecutiveOfficer,the
DirectoroftheItalianSpecialization,threefacultymemberselectedbythedoctoralfacultytoserveatermofthreeyears,co‐terminouswiththetermoftheExecutiveOfficer,andthreestudentselectedbythestudentbodytoserveatermofoneyear.AtleastonememberoftheExecutiveCommitteemustbe
electedfromthefacultyholdingGraduateCenterappointments.ThethreecandidatesreceivingthemostvotesshallbeelectedtotheCommittee,andtherunner‐upshallbeelectedasalternate,toserveontheCommitteeintheeventthatoneoftheregularfacultymembersoftheCommitteecannot
attend.IfafterthetriennialfacultyvotefortheExecutiveCommitteetheExecutiveCommittee(includingtheexofficiomembers)lacksatleastonerepresentativefromeachseniorcollegethathassixormorefacultyinthisPh.D.Program,asecondballot,containingnamesoffacultyfromanysuchsenior

Committee and to serve as student members of the Committee. Elections by ballot normally take
placeinthelatespring. AllmembersoftheExecutiveCommitteearevotingmembers,butthestudentmembersmaynotvotein
decisionsinvolvingfacultyappointments,promotions,andleaves,orinmattersconcerningindividual
studentsandexaminations. TheExecutiveCommitteeshallhavetheauthorityfortheoperationoftheProgrambetweenthestated
meetingsoftheProgram'sfacultysubjecttothepoliciesestablishedbytheProgram.TheExecutive
OfficershallserveaschairoftheExecutiveCommittee. TheExecutiveCommitteeincoordinationwiththeFacultyMembershipCommitteeshallconducta
continuingreviewofthefacultyofthedoctoralprogram.TheExecutiveCommitteeshallworkwith
therelevantcollegedepartmentsinrecruitingnewfaculty. TheExecutiveCommitteeshallrecommendpoliciesandproceduresondissertations. Afacultymemberorstudentmayserveonmorethanonecommittee III. FacultyMembership NominationtothedoctoralfacultyshallbemadebytheExecutiveCommitteeuponrecommendationof
theFacultyMembershipCommittee.Criteriaforsuchappointmentshallincludesuchitemsas: 1. Currentpursuitofsignificantresearchrelevanttothedoctoralprogram;2. Qualificationtoteachadoctoralcourseorprovideotherdoctoral‐leveltraining;3. Qualificationtosupervisedoctoraldissertationsorothergraduate‐levelresearch.A. Appointmenttothedoctoralfacultyisnotautomatic,norcanitbeautomatically"earned"
throughanypriorservice.Amembermayberemovedfromthedoctoralfacultyupon
recommendationoftheExecutiveCommittee,whichwillhaveconsultedwiththeFacultyMembershipCommittee,andafterthememberhasbeengivenoneyear'snoticeofintentionofremoval.Afaculty
memberwhohasbeennotifiedofintendedremovalmayaddressanappealtotheFacultyMembershipCommittee.
B. Individualsmustbemembersofthedoctoralfacultyinordertoteachadoctoral‐level
courseonmorethantwooccasionsorsupervisedissertations.

Tomeetemergencyneeds,individualsmaybeappointedtemporarilytothedoctoralfacultyforaperiodofonesemesteroroneyear.Suchtemporaryappointmentscannotberepeatedforacumulativetotalofmorethanoneacademicyear(twosemesters).TomeetanemergencytheExecutiveOfficermay
makesuchatemporaryappointment.NotificationofsuchactionshouldbeconveyedtotheFacultyMembershipCommitteeand/orExecutiveCommittee,whichshouldmakeanominationfortemporaryappointmenttotheProvostassoonaspractical.Individualsontemporaryappointmentdonothave
votingrightsintheProgram,normaytheybeappointedtoProgramcommittees.Thisprocedureisdesignedforunusualcases,asdescribed,andcannotbeusedasasubstituteforthenormalproceduresspecifiedintheGSUC'sGovernancedocument.
IV. StandingCommittees FacultyMembershipCommittee TheFacultyMembershipCommitteeiscomposedoftheExecutiveOfficer,theDeputyExecutiveOfficer,
theDirectoroftheItalianSpecialization,twofacultymembers,andonestudentmember.Thestudent membershallhaveavoicebutnovote.Thefacultymembersshallbeappointedeverytwoyears.The
studentrepresentativeshallbeelectedeverytwoyearsbythestudentsoftheProgram. TheFacultyMembershipCommitteeisrequiredtonominatecandidatesformembershiponthe
Program'sfaculty(asprovidedbySection6.1oftheGSUC'sGovernancedocument),withaviewtowardincludinginthedoctoralprogramfacultynewlyappointedatthecolleges.TheCommitteeistomaintain
arosterofpotentialdoctoralfacultyappointments,torecordannuallythestatusofthosefacultymemberscurrentlydesignated,andtoreviewallotheractionstakeninregardtomembershiponthe
doctoralfaculty. ArosterofdoctoralfacultyshallbepreparedbytheCommitteeatthestartofeachacademicyearfor
reviewbytheProvost.Thereasonsforinclusionofeachindividualinthedoctoralfacultyshallbe
