ACCOMPLISH GREAT THINGS,

ONE GARDEN AT A TIME

Outside my window, the sun is shining, my blue and white Aquilegia (Columbine) is in full bloom and the bees are buzzing from plant to plant as if there will be no tomorrow. What a contrast from exactly two weeks ago! We experienced an unusually frigid thunderstorm with tiny snowballs that blew in several thick squalls from a blackened sky. The snow didn’t last long but it was a good reminder that we can’t always rely on the date as a predictor of when it’s safe to plant. I have just put out my hummingbird feeders. The first Ruby-throated male of the season came knocking on the window of the French doors late yesterday afternoon. Some friends who live on the mountain always put their feeders out on May 15 whether they have seen hummingbirds or not, but I prefer to wait until I know they have arrived. This year has been quite mild overall so there are plenty of shrubs and flowers for hummingbirds and other pollinators. That is not always the case and our backyard feeders and garden flowers become almost essential for their survival. During the first week of May, I attended the NGC, Inc. Convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan where I met with the other six members of the Central Atlantic Region. There was much discussion about the future direction of, not just Central Atlantic, but all eight regions currently under NGC’s authority. As a region, it was decided that we would explore the possibility of becoming a 501c-3 organization, financially independent of National. It is not known whether or not any region can qualify under IRS guidelines but the seed has been planted and the regions are exploring this as an option going forward. To date, I have heard nothing regarding how the regions would fit into the NGC, Inc. framework should they become financially independent but I will keep you informed.

It was my distinct pleasure to represent all of you at the National Convention. This year was a special one for Pennsylvania. For the second year in a row, GCFP’s applicant for NGC’s Member Award of Honor was chosen as Central Atlantic Region’s recipient. Julie Dandoy was nominated for the Member Award of Honor by Butler Garden Club, District IX. The Keystone Gardener, once again, received a First Place Publication Award among all others who applied in the large state category. Also, George Weigel, the garden writer for the Patriot News Organization located in the Harrisburg-Camp Hill area, was named one of three winners of NGC’s Award of Excellence. George was nominated by Penn-Cumberland Garden Club, District IV. And lastly, Leah Helena Wenhold sponsored by Pottstown Area Garden Club, District II/III, received the Lois Dupre Shuster National Scholarship. These honors were enough to make my trip worthwhile, however, they were only the tip of the iceberg. I walked off the stage with an armload of awards and ribbons including 17 NGC Awards for Pennsylvania clubs. I could not have been more proud! Congratulations to all.

DOROTHY A. HERMANI, GCFP PRESIDENT 1989 - 1991 “OUR BELOVED DOTTIE”

It was a privilege to know “Dottie” Hermani. We remember her, not only for her friendly smile and kind manner, but also for her support and sage advice whenever a problem or question arose. She was comforting whenever soothing was needed and, no matter what type of situation occurred, she was always a “Lady.” She had a wealth of knowledge that she willingly shared. It was a joy to listen to the stories of her travels and events. Dottie served as President of her Milton Garden Club and also as District V Director more than one time. She was installed as GCFP President, April 19, 1989, in Convention Hall at the 59th Annual Convention at Seven Springs. Her Theme was “Environment, Our Growing Concern.” Dottie was passionate about Recycling, Disposing of Hazardous Waste, and everyone helping to Save our Environment. For many years she served as Pennsylvania Resource Council Chairman for the GCFP and for District V. Dottie was also active in her Community, her Church, and the Woman’s Club. She was honored for her service to her community when they dedicated a Park in her name.

On February 27th, 2016, two days before her 100th Birthday on February 29th, she was honored at a celebration party given by her family. She was her usual gracious self as she greeted each of the more than hundred guests. We are grateful for this final visit with our memorable and special friend, Dottie. The following prayer, written by Josephine Keithan, a member of Milton Garden Club, was used at Dottie’s GCFP Presidential Installation:

“Our Gracious Father, how generously you have lavished beauty on the earth. Help us to be truly grateful for all we have. Give us the opportunity of helping our newly elected State President, Dorothy, achieve her goals. Make us quick to understand the needs of others and grant that living in the brightness of Thy Presence, we may bring sunshine to all the members of the GCFP. Help us to be strong in love and service to You and one another. Amen.” Thank You, Dottie, for the Blessing of knowing you. Written by Gladys Dapp for the 2016 GCFP Annual Convention Booklet

The Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania is privileged to be the recipient of a very generous donation from Dottie’s family. Her family made the donation in honor of her

100th birthday and requested that a GCFP scholarship be established in Dottie’s name. In 2017, a 10 year Dorothy A. Hermani Scholarship will be awarded for the first time.

This scholarship will be available to high school seniors, college students and post-graduate students studying in a horticulture related field.

Sharon W. Brown, GCFP President 2015-17

It’s that time of year…mosquitoes, and now the Zika scare. Although scary, mosquitoes are amazing animals. Here are some interesting facts along with some safety precautions: When mating, male mosquitoes locate females by the sound of their wings. Females beat their wings up to 500 times per second, which attracts the male’s attention. When mosquitoes mate they synchronize their wing beats to perform a lover’s duet. Mosquitoes can smell human breath. They have receptors on their antennae that detect carbon dioxide when we exhale. The plumes of CO2 rise into the air, acting as trails that the mosquitoes follow to find the source. Sweat helps mosquitoes choose their victims. Our sweat produces 340 chemical odors and some of our odors smell like dinner to mosquitoes. Mosquitoes use heat sensors around their mouthparts to detect the warmth of your body – actually, the blood inside it – then land on you and locate the best capillaries for tapping. Only female mosquitoes bite. Both male and female feed mainly on fruit and plant nectar, but the female also needs the protein in blood to help her eggs develop. Once she has her fill of blood she rests for a few days before laying her eggs. A mosquito can drink up to three times its weight in blood. (Don’t worry, though. It would take about 1.2 million bites to drain all the blood from your body.) DEET is considered the ‘gold standard’ of mosquito repellents. Mosquitoes do not like the smell of it. A product containing 10 percent DEET can protect you for up to 90 minutes. Lemon-eucalyptus oil has also been proven effective and recommended by the CDC. *** Bug zappers are useless against mosquitoes. Studies have shown that less than 1 percent of the insects killed

by zappers are mosquitoes or other biting insects. The devices attract and kill beneficial or harmless insects, like moths, and have no effect on the overall mosquito population. Electronic repellers have also proven ineffective in scientific testing. Mosquito traps can kill thousands of mosquitoes in a single night. One study conducted by public health researchers in Australia found that a Mega-Catch™ trap caught and killed more than 44,000 female mosquitoes from 17 species in less than two weeks. This is a silent trap emitting a combination of carbon dioxide, heat and moisture to attract and trap mosquitoes. The two main mosquito predators are fish and dragonflies. Put small fish in ponds or water features. Some towns in Maine release dragonflies every summer as a natural form of mosquito control. Female mosquitoes can lay up to 300 eggs at a time, in rafts, on the surface of stagnant water, in as little as an inch of standing water. Mosquitoes spend their first 10 days in water. It is very important to: ***Empty, drain, or cover all things that can hold water. Plant some mosquito-repelling flowers and herbs, especially near areas that are prone to collect water. Mosquitoes don’t like the smell of: basil, lavender, rosemary, and peppermint; geranium, marigold, and pennyroyal; catnip, citronella, lemon balm, and garlic; and will stay away from them. Mosquitoes are considered the deadliest “animal” in the world. The Anopheles mosquito, in particular, is dangerous because it transmits malaria, which kills more than one million people every year, primarily in Africa. Alexander the Great is believed to have died of malaria in 323 B.C. Information source from “about.com” Take precautions and be safe: Cheers, Norma Rees, Chairman of Conservation Birds/Butterflies

There is only ONE National Park that is a WATER GARDEN and that is called Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens. (https://www.nps.gov/keaq/index.htm) Kenilworth is in Washington, DC. It was originally started by a Civil War Veteran in 1880 who bought 30 acres on the Anacostia River. He brought water lilies from his home state of Maine. He, and then his daughter, created and maintained a water lily and lotus garden. Eventually the property became a National Park and it demonstrates the importance of wetlands. A boardwalk now affords guests the opportunity to walk throughout the acreage providing a beautiful view of natural wetland plants and a wonderful bird-watching station. In July, the Park holds an annual Lotus and Water Festival (July 16th). Summertime is the BEST time to visit this National Park. While in Washington, DC, you might want to visit the National Arboretum, the Botanical Garden and the grounds of Dunbarton Oaks. The Dunbarton Oaks gardens were originally designed by Beatrix Farrand. Brandywine Passport: Brandywinetreasures.org/ Did you know that there’s a tourist pass called the Brandywine Passport that offers admission to 11 attractions including Winterthur, Nemours, Mt. Cuba, Hagley, and Longwood Gardens. The pass is good from Memorial Day to Labor Day. At $45 (individual) or $95 (family), it is an ideal way to see many of the best gardens and museums in the Brandywine Valley. Nightscape at Longwood Gardens: http://longwoodgardens.org/nightscape-visiting-tips This summer, Longwood Gardens will be featuring an evening experience called Nightscape. It is an evening event where the gardens become the canvas for light artists to display color, light and sound throughout the gardens. Nightscape starts on Aug. 3rd and ends on Oct. 29. Reservations required. America’s Garden Capital is in the greater Philadelphia area: http://americasgardencapital.org/

One of my instructors at Longwood started a course by telling us how lucky we were to live in the Philadelphia region: “you should have goosebumps to realize how many gardens surround you.” Did you realize there are 30 gardens in a 30 mile radius? This website is a wonderful directory of all the gardens, a map, and a sorting option to view the 30 gardens by region, interest and type. American Horticultural Society Reciprocal Admissions Program: http://www.ahs.org/gardening-programs/rap/find/statebystate REMEMBER YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD! Don’t forget that if you are a member of any of the gardens that belong to the American Horticultural Society, your membership card gets you into approximately 300 gardens all over the country. This website will take you directly to their RAP Program (Reciprocal Admissions Program) with a state by state directory. Sharon Richardson, Chairman of Horticulture: Trees/Conifers/Shrubs

THE HONOR ROLL OF EXCEPTIONAL HORTICULTURISTS 2016

17The Keystone Gardener Summer 2016

Greensburg, PA...951 Old Salem Road, is more than the location of Greensburg Garden and Civic Center. It is the home of the GCFP Affiliate, GREENSBURG GARDEN CENTER…and the address of the new beautiful LEFEVRE BUTTERFLY GARDEN, a dream that became a reality in 2015. Specifically, the garden location is at the Gardeners Shed behind the main building. Thanks to a generous gift from the Lefevre Family, of Jeannette, PA, and the able leadership of GGC Officers - President Carla Rusnica, Vice President Diane Dale, Treasurer Elizabeth Pesci, Recording Secretary Sandy Truckner - and many volunteers, among whom is the garden designer, Linda Haas, the garden was dedicated in the fall of 2015. The garden features plantings of native plants and wildflowers (all pollinator-friendly), a stone path, a fairy garden, and a waterfall. The purpose is to further the cause of conservation of butterflies and all pollinators, as well as to educate the community about the important role pollinators play in the garden. A Grand Opening Weekend in the garden was held on June 10, 2016, with activities specifically designed to attract children and introduce them to the beauty and importance of butterflies, and all pollinators. Children crafts included cookie decorating, decorating a garden flag, water painting balsa wood butterfly masks. At specified

intervals there was story-telling. There were plants and butterfly-related literature available for purchase, including butterfly photo fans and Mr. Butterfly Man (Rick Mikula) book, Family Butterfly Book. “MOTHER NATURE” provided the butterflies, of course. It was a perfect opening day, followed by a second perfect day for the Butterfly Garden TEA. Staged in the Gardeners Shed, it was a complete surprise to find white tablecloths and white chair covers, and all the wall shelves draped in white cloths. Mothers and grandmothers brought the vital element…the children, who enjoyed the tea sandwiches, cookies, beautiful teacups and dishes, small ones for the children, individual teapots so they could pour their own (not hot) tea, butterfly pins, cookies and take-home favors. The weather was lovely; the garden was lovely; the potting shed was lovely; it was lovely all-around! There is no charge to visit the garden. It is open to the public during the summer: 10 AM-3 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays, or by appointment. Special events/activities may include a charge. Inquiries may be made by phoning the Garden Center – 724-837-0245 or by e-mail: [email protected] Check the Greensburg Garden Center website: www.greensburggardencenter.net, and “like us” on FACEBOOK. submitted by Angie Raitano

I am encouraging you to visit the American Beauties Native Plants Website - www.abnativeplants.com This website has a link where you can download two comprehensive lists. One list provides the best plants for bees. The second identifies the best native plants for butterflies. I like the fact that host plants and those that are a nectar source are clearly shown along with plant type, bloom time, and exposure. These simple lists will make a great addition to your personal reference materials. The website also has a Native Plant Library. You will find native perennials, grasses, vines, trees, and shrubs which can attract wildlife and look great in your garden. You can view native plants by common name or botanical name, then scroll through the list to view a thumbnail image and introductory information.
