James Palmer, CEO THE GOOD INVESTOR SPECIAL EDITION FROM THE CEO’S DESK Dear Investors, We have now moved back into our office after the lockdown period; it’s good to be back! We were able successfully to operate remotely, but it’s nice to see each other in 3D again. We are a close team, with a shared passion for our mission. Despite the challenging times we have all faced since our last newsletter, we have some very good news to share with you, including: • Fitch Rating Services affirmed our existing credit rating at BB. The Outlook continues to be Stable; • We have welcomed a new shareholder, and raised further capital in April 2020; • Our deposits have continued to grow; and • We have made new loans to celebrate, including one for Habitat for Humanity Nelson, which we discuss in more detail in this edition. We now have over $150m in loans across Aotearoa, New Zealand. We continue to actively support and pray for our borrowers to enable them to flourish and serve communities. With increasing need in our country, we are proud to be supporting churches, community housing providers, schools and op shops (to name just a few), enabling them to serve and provide. Your deposits enable us to make these loans, so thank you for your support. It is also really pleasing to be able to report that not one of our borrowers is behind in their loan payments to us. This is my prayer for all of you: Lord God, The future is uncertain. Help us to be sensitive to what each other needs, to listen well, and to be there for our neighbours, particularly those in need or distress. We know that you care for us and love us. Forgive us if we doubt this great truth in the time ahead. Help us to find meaning and hope, even when the way ahead might be a challenge for many people. In the name of Jesus, who will return to make all things whole. Amen Blessings, James Palmer Chief Executive Christian Savings is delighted to confirm our credit rating has been affirmed at BB. Our Outlook was also affirmed as Stable. Thank you to all our depositors, whether you have been supporting us for 2 weeks or 20 years, we couldn’t do the work we do without you. FITCH RATING

THE GOOD

INVESTORSPECIAL EDITION

FROM THE CEO’S DESKDear Investors,

We have now moved back into our office after the lockdown period; it’s good to be back! We were able successfully to operate remotely, but it’s nice to see each other in 3D again. We are a close team, with a shared passion for our mission.

Despite the challenging times we have all faced since our last newsletter, we have some very good news to share with you, including:

• Fitch Rating Services affirmed our existing credit rating at BB. The Outlook continues to be Stable;

• We have welcomed a new shareholder, and raised further capital in April 2020;

• Our deposits have continued to grow; and

• We have made new loans to celebrate, including one for Habitat for Humanity Nelson, which we discuss in more detail in this edition.

This is my prayer for all of you:

Lord God,

The future is uncertain.

Amen

Blessings,

James Palmer Chief Executive

Christian Savings is delighted to confirm our credit rating has been affirmed at BB. Our Outlook was also affirmed as Stable.

Thank you to all our depositors, whether you have been supporting us for 2 weeks or 20 years, we couldn’t do the work we do without you.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITYIn late 2019, Habitat for Humanity Nelson had outgrown their

current premises and were on the search for a new home to lease. Just before Christmas the group visited a large community building in Nelson that had been up for lease and mostly empty for two years. While visiting the site, the real estate agent suggested the owners were actually considering selling and sent through the paperwork the following day. Not long after, the board agreed to make an offer.

“It wouldn’t have happened without Christian Savings’ support,” says Nick Clarke, General Manager, Habitat for Humanity Nelson. “The process was really good, and the level of support was excellent. In what had to be challenging circumstances navigating COVID, making a decision to back us speaks volumes.”

Habitat Nelson first got in touch with Christian Savings early 2020, through some church and community development connections. “It’s fantastic to have you guys journey with us so closely.”

During Level 4 lockdown, Christian Savings had to slow down a small selection of lending transactions to ensure that they could still proceed when lockdown conditions were eased. “Everything went really smoothly, when things were on hold... Everyone was really understanding. What was interesting is that although it did stall us and pushed the agreement out a little, we were still able to settle on the original date signed in January!”

Habitat’s new home has room for their offices and ReStore shop to grow, along with room for more tenants to join them. The group’s intent is to create a community hub focused on

promoting community wellbeing and affordable housing initiatives.

“As a faith-based organisation and working with Christian Savings—with everything that’s happened, it’s a big God story. There’s real privilege in that, being able to steward that asset appropriately to create positive ripples across the community, it leverages others coming in; that’s how the hub thing developed.”

For the past few months Habitat has even had the support of the District Health Board using the space as a COVID testing centre, which has been a great help to cover the mortgage.

Work has begun on Hub renovations to make the space suitable for its new tenants!

If you’re interested in becoming a tenant or for more information, contact Nick Clarke at [email protected]

The COVID-19 crisis gives the church the opportunity to thrive. Here at Windsor Park we recognized very quickly that decades of ongoing growth and ministry development meant we were well-placed to be able to respond quickly and effectively.

We decided early to go fully online (we saw what was coming) and were able to resource WindsorPark@Home effectively with local missional tools that encouraged our congregation to care for each other, and beyond, very quickly.

We also produced a range of resources to help our community get through the first week, effectively communicated daily

and did everything we could to be present and pastoral.

Just before moving into Alert Level 4, Windsor Park launched a social initiative called #reachout3 asking everyone in the Windsor Park community to reach out to three people, contacting them a couple of times each week to check in on, encourage, and show the love of God. Then encourage those people to reach out to 3 more and so on and so on. Our hope is for this to be a cycle of care and connection that spreads across our city and nation.

THE RENDER GATHERING, MANUREWA

There have been some exciting opportunities to reinvent systems, process, and what gathering as faith communities looks like, but the real win has been seeing and hearing of people finding Jesus, opening up to him in their lives, and actually growing in their faith through digital platforms and what many may have thought to be limiting access.

We had planned to begin digital membership by the end of 2020, as we had been planning since mid-2019. But this gave us the opportunity to kick start that sooner rather than later. It has been a platform to birth new ministry opportunities and release, empower and initiate new leaders also.

We also started Render Radio, which was a late-night show targeted to bring joy and encouragement into the season, changing the narrative from media info and COVID-19 to development and joy. We’ve seen people come to church through it, linked into greater community spaces and broken-down perceptions of church and faith through it.

ST ANDREW’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, HASTINGS

We have been doing some great stuff in our church, some connecting to worship via zoom, some without internet having a worship buddy who will read the service to them. I think lots of connections between people have deepened and strengthened through this time of not seeing each other. It has been rich. We have also had special zoom coffee times, including an ANZAC space where people shared how war had impacted their family.

Pentecost SundayIt felt like a gift from God to be able to worship together again at Pentecost.

It was so poignant to begin our worship with the Pentecost words from Acts 2: “When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.”

Although we couldn’t embrace or shake hands or sing – we did dance as we shared Christ’s peace through smiling and waving to one another across the socially distanced metres that divided us.

The Isolated Together Fund was a new initiative from Christian Savings to support the church during COVID-19 Level 4. Technology is an excellent tool for staying in touch with our family, friends and church community, but not

everyone has access to new technology. After receiving nominations a range of deserving people across the country,

Christian Savings donated 20 Samsung tablets to individuals to keep them connected, along with a few more through support from support from generous donations.

It was a joy to be able to help people stay connected during this time, from isolated church members to children and teenagers needing a device for online schooling, single parent families,

university students and individuals going through cancer treatment.

SHAREHOLDER’S PROFILE

“We became a shareholder because we understand the value of a long-term relationship with a lender that understands how churches work,” says Tony Walter, Grace Vineyard Church. “The way churches rely on tithes and donations for income presents an unusual situation for the trading banks to deal with in terms of their lending criteria.”

Vineyard Churches of Aotearoa New Zealand became a Christian Savings shareholder in December 2018.

The first church in the movement was planted in 1989. Today there are 28 churches nationwide.

When we looked for a lending partner in 2013 to finance our future Campus,

Christian Savings was one of the options we considered. We were so impressed by their understanding of the unique challenges faced by churches, their willingness to provide advice and expertise and their flexibility around structuring the debt and repayment, we have worked with them on every project since then. By becoming shareholders we’ve made it possible for other Vineyard churches around NZ to take advantage of the relationship we’ve built.

“There are obviously many options people have in terms of where to invest but very few have a direct, positive impact on extending the Kingdom.”

WORKING FROM HOME

HOW HAVE YOU FOUND WORKING FROM HOME?

Bruce: I have enjoyed swapping my daily commute to a walk with my wife first thing in the morning and having lunch each day with my family.

Grace: Love working from home, particularly not having to drive in and facing crazy Auckland traffic. We were also so blessed to have a management team that prepared us for this situation.

WHAT HAVE YOU MISSED ABOUT THE CHRISTIAN SAVINGS OFFICE?

Shona: The office culture we have which is awesome, missed being able to talk through work issues to get others wisdom & advice, missed the great work atmosphere we have, missed seeing everyone of the team!

Bruce: Coffee (a long black) with the CEO (James) as we plan for what’s next for Christian Savings.

Catherine: I’ve missed the face-to-face communications with colleagues and visitors; the opportunity to live into one another’s lives as events occur, and the camaraderie that comes with a close team.

Ziwei: I missed walking around the work building, enjoying the lunch time together with lovely colleagues exploring what food they were having.

ANYTHING THAT HAS ENCOURAGED YOU DURING THIS TIME?

Shona: I was so encouraged with many conversations I had with our customers, showing concern and support for CS. Always asked them how they were coping with Lockdown and my most memorable response was one woman who was so thrilled to see her long list of jobs around their home finally get completed by her hubby!

Alex: Churches being innovative in their care for their communities, from changing how they do church, to extra support for those vulnerable or isolated. Also, Rod Robson (one of our board members) sharing very thoughtful devotions each Friday morning with our team over zoom.

Emily: Lovely walks in the Domain every day.

Catherine: I’ve been encouraged by the fact that even in these very challenging times, our clients and customers have thought out beyond their own needs to the needs of their churches and communities; and have been particularly grateful for those who have made new deposits to Christian Savings, thus enabling us to give more assistance to the churches.

Grace: So amazing for our team to be able to work through such situation. Great team spirit and teamwork. And gratitude to all our depositors who have been so supporting towards our work.

ANYTHING INSPIRING/SUPPORTIVE CS HAS DONE, EITHER FOR YOU PERSONALLY, ANOTHER STAFF MEMBER, OR A CLIENT?

Shona: Our Management team, led by our extraordinary CEO, were wonderful – had us prepared early, supportive with all our work needs, kept in daily communication and I just felt hugely encouraged by my CS family. Privileged to be part of the team.

Bruce: I was really proud of Christian Savings and “Isolated Together” initiative. Thinking of others and being able to do something about it.

Emily: Daily zoom staff meetings and check in – I live by myself, so it was a really nice way to start the day. Even some board members came to my birthday zoom over Easter which was so lovely and special!

ANY LESSONS YOU HAVE LEARNT DURING THIS TIME?

Ben: To not be too hard on myself, especially during a time when we’re all facing an odd situation. Just move task by task and get it done to the best of your ability with the resources at hand.

Shona: I can work from home! My computer skill-set increased way more. It is important to take time out, slow pace of life down and really appreciate our surroundings. I don’t need a takeaway coffee every day, takeaways are over-rated!

Our world has changed hugely, we have to breathe & be grateful every day. We don’t really know what the future holds but one thing I am sure of and that’s who holds the future! My faith in Jesus is my anchor, He is the peace that passes all understanding.

Alex: That in times of uncertainty, God is greater and unchanging, trust in him, go to faith - not fear. Also, the power of exercise and fresh air, a short walk or run will do wonders for you physically and mentally.

Bruce: I have been able to slow down a little during this time and focus on the things that really matter. I have also loved the quiet on our walks around the neighbourhood when there has been no traffic.

Catherine: That in spite of not being able to congregate or even come close to other people, a wonderful spirit of community can still be created. Anzac Day dawn is a special case in point; and the delightful teddy bears and soft toys in people’s windows rendered a special sense of being in this together. I’ve also learnt that it’s amazing how much you can do without, at least for a short time!

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO AS WE COME OUT OF LOCKDOWN?

Alex: Seeing friends and family, going to brunch and finding my new normal with a fresh perspective (and very clean house).

Bruce: Getting together as a team and sharing a meal.

Emily: Travelling. Seeing friends and family. No more queues at Countdown… I hope

Catherine: Being able to socialize easily with friends and family; and to being able to travel, both here and abroad. But I am most looking forward to the time when our economy has recovered, and all people have work and a home; safety and security.
