A lETTER fROM ThE EDITOR…A NEw yEAR OfTEN bRINGS ThE ANTICIPATION Of NEw ThINGS.

Welcome to our first edition of Gai’s Gazette for 2015. We are pleased to announce our new association with the Southern Highlands most sought after magazine, Highlife. From now on, Gai’s Gazette will appear bi monthly and will be full, not only of our usual articles such as Performance of the Month, and the Pen of the Lady Trainer, or a profile of people in the industry, but also, especially for the ladies, there will be information on styling and fashion from Kate Waterhouse and Coty Farquhar. There will also be information from Emma Pearce on special yearlings purchased from the various sales, travel stories from Sue Lloyd Williams AO and self-confessed foodie, Su-Ann Khaw and much more. Our aim is to offer “something for everyone”, and I am tickled pink with the number of you who tell me “I love it and can’t wait to read Gai’s Gazette from cover to cover”. Thank you. We certainly aim to please.

I love the yearling sales and our particular way of preparation for purchasing them. The chase for the champion is thrilling. Our Gold Coast adventure at the Magic Millions this January past was its usual frenetic, exciting, successful self, and already the yearlings purchased are being broken in on their pathway to possible stardom under the watchful eye of our star trainer. Gai has already been to NZB’s Karaka Sales and made her purchases there too, and the Inglis Classic Sale at Newmarket, Randwick is now in full swing as I write. It shouldn’t be forgotten, that the wonderful Choisir came from this sale. At the moment, there is great anticipation amongst our troups for the first of our biannual pilgrimages to the Hunter Valley to study the yearlings for the fabulous Inglis Easter Sale. Mark Webster and his very professional team do a wonderful job preparing the magnificent grounds and conveniences (transport, cafeteria, restaurants, boardroom, etc) of the Newmarket complex as a backdrop for our enjoyment of the horses on display, and going to these yearling sales at Easter has become such an integral part of the Autumn Carnival time. This year, the Easter yearling sales are on the 7th, 8th and 9th April. Now, with the advent of The Championships (see Nancy Inglis’ article) there is much to entice all racegoers to Royal Randwick during the Autumn Carnival.

Enjoying a weekend away celebrating three birthdays of family and friends, I am sitting back on a generous and very comfortable couch. I frequently find myself gazing out of the window in distraction, or for inspiration, at the soft undulating hills of the Southern Highlands. On the lawn outside there is a riotous gathering of rosellas. Beyond, on the hillsides, the black angus graze lazily on the lush green grass. The sun is setting, softening both the landscape and the long shadows of the silent gumtrees. There is something very comforting about these majestic sentries of our beautiful land.

I think it is going to be a good year… See you at the Races.

Just as I am putting pen to paper for my article for this month’s issue of Gai’s Gazette, my great mate Zeb Armstrong has reminded me of something. He has reminded me that autumn

is my time to shine. It is true. The Lady Trainer tends to come into her own when the big races hit Rosehill and Randwick during March and April. Exactly half of my 126 Group 1 wins have been recorded at Rosehill and Randwick during the Sydney Autumn Carnival. Autumn is upon us and I am leaving no stone unturned in my preparation.

So far, a great deal of my concentration is on the babies. Australia still plays host to the richest two-year-old race in the world and don’t let that be forgotten. Any colt that wins the Golden Slipper is instantly worth a very appealing seven figure sum. I spend many days per year searching the stud farms looking for that colt, a colt that can win the Slipper. Later in this magazine there is a feature story about the Golden Slipper and I could not agree more with the content. After this article, flick through and find it, as it is well worth a read and the article brings up some very valid points about the power of the Golden Slipper as a stallion making race.

I still maintain there is no greater stallion making race in Australia than the Golden Slipper…

How do you and the team go about sustaining excellence the year round? There are a few things we do, but mainly, we are constantly trying to raise the bar. As soon as a carnival is over, be it the

No one can deny the enticement of The Championships initiative. However, after the running of the Melbourne Cup, before the Championships, lies the thrill of the

richest two-year-old race in the world – the Golden Slipper. From its inception in the late 1950s, no other race has had such an impact on Australia’s breeding industry. Since 1957 the Slipper has been the most sort after jewel in Sydney Racing and a colt

in particular that wins or runs really well in the Slipper instantly becomes of huge value to the Australian breeding industry. This year, the Slipper is run on the 21st of March and as we stand, as in most years, Gai looks primed and ready for this race…

It is an enormous pleasure to be invited to be a Guest Contributor for “Gai’s Gazette”. And, over the coming month’s I will take you on a journey and together we will explore some of the

world’s favourite racecourses, their destinations and unique essences.

During February, as part of a Victorian Government Trade Mission, I led an Equine delegation to the Middle East and Turkey. This trip took us to Dubai and Qatar experiencing pleasant mild weather in the high 20’s compared to a chilly 10 degrees or colder in Istanbul. Needless to say, we had multi wardrobe changes along the way! Of course the Dubai Racing Club was beginning to gear up for its ‘Dubai World Cup’ meeting in late March when it plays host to international contenders and visitors. There was a fever of activity at Meydan and you could see people working tirelessly to complete maintenance work to get the Racecourse looking its absolute best for when the eyes of the world are upon it…

What a month it has been! On this side of the Tasman it has felt like normal daily life has been completely side-lined in favour of auction life at Karaka, with

NZB’s National Yearling Sales Series keeping everyone busy until the last lot went through the ring on 1 February.

It’s with a huge sigh of relief that, with the dust now settled, buyers are happy, horses found homes, and vendor coffers are set to be re-filled for another year. As we all know, the journey through racehorse ownership can have its ups and downs so we want to make sure the sales experience is as enjoyable as it can

be. There’s a stack of adrenalin in the sales ring oozing from the anticipation of buying and the excitement of securing, and if nothing else we want to make sure there’s a quiet, leafy spot and plenty of chilled kiwi sauvignon on hand to help bring the heart rate back to normal!

ROb wATERhOUSE POINTS OUT ThE IMPACT Of ShUTTlE STAllIONS ON AUSTRAlIAN RACING.

I recently wrote a piece for the Sydney Morning Herald and said: “Sadler’s Wells’ son, Galileo is champion sire in the UK but underperformed here.” Perhaps I was a shade harsh.

A correspondent fired back,

Shuttle StallionS “Galileo’s Southern Hemisphere statistics are seven Group 1 winners, more than Lonhro and Snitzel, not to mention all his Group 1 winners in the Northern Hemisphere. Sadlers Wells had three sons standing at stud in Australia and New Zealand, Montjeu, Scenic and High Chaparral. To date they have left 26 Group 1 winners in this part of the world alone. Rob, you should remember The Offer, Descarado, Tuesday Joy and Carnegie Express.”

On race day, Gai’s Assistant Trainer, Racing Manager, Assistant Racing Manager, Strappers and her horses are all expected to be turned out impeccably for how could anyone looking from the outside in understand how much loving care and attention we take over our horses and our roles if we cannot take care of ourselves?

There is no more important time to concentrate on attention to detail than at the sales. This leads me to my column for 2015. I will be reviewing some of our purchases throughout the year and explaining what it is that made seven time Champion Trainer, the trainer of five Golden Slippers, seven Doncasters, eight Metropolitans, six Chipping Norton Stakes, seven Ranvet Stakes (just to mention a few) choose this group of future Champions…

SU-ANN CONTINUES hER fOUR PART SERIES, ThIS IS PART 2: TOKyO, NORThERN fARM AND ShADAI STAllION STATION, hOKKAIDO.

In my third consecutive year of visiting Northern Farm and Shadai Stallion Station, I’ve learned the most comfortable route is a one or two day Tokyo layover to and from Hokkaido.

For literally thousands of years, Hokkaido, which is Japan’s second biggest island and most northern major island, has been hugely significant to the longevity of the Japanese Empire. The island and all that lay within it sits protruded between North Korea, the rest of Japan, Russia, the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean. For thousands of years before WWII the inhabitants of this island preserved their way of living despite countless threats from the strange foreign lands which lay just some 300km–500km to the west, the north and the south west.

Come the 20th century and this area between Japan, China, Russia and Korea in the far west Pacific, can lay claim to have hosted a great deal of the most significant non-European events of the century. These days the island is a peaceful and beautiful place that just so happens to house one of the racing world’s most magnificent treasures - the breathtaking Northern Farm and Shadai Stallion Station…

DRS is a new way to solve upper airway mysteries. Abnormal respiratory noise during exercise associated with dysfunction of the upper respiratory tract is commonly

seen in performance horses, in particular the Thoroughbred racehorse.

The traditional method of diagnosing upper respiratory tract problems is through examination of the horses’ throat (larynx and pharynx) by use of an endoscope. This is typically accomplished while the horse is at rest and the endoscope is passed up the nasal passage to allow examination of the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx and trachea (upper respiratory tract). The majority of upper respiratory tract problems occur at the pharynx and/or larynx. Although most airway problems can be diagnosed in this manner, a significant number of horses have pathology and dysfunction that is dynamic in nature. This means the abnormality only occurs when the horse is exercising, or that the condition is significantly worse at exercise than during rest. As such, some upper respiratory tract problems cannot be readily diagnosed during traditional resting endoscopic examination…

I have loved roses for as long as I can remember. For me they are the perfect flower. I especially love summertime when garden roses are at their peak. I see the rose as an expression

of spiritual joy, representing the human soul … quite often, the beauty of the rose leaves me breathless. The rose was my Mother’s favourite flower and I fondly remember her beautiful vases filled with magnificent roses of many different types, sizes and colours throughout our home decorating each room. Roses give so much

to our lives and living with them is one of the great pleasures of life. Throughout the centuries, the rose has been entwined with history, literature, art and music and today more than ever, I believe there is a new passion for roses, especially for the old fashioned large country variety, filled with petals upon petals…
