The Golden Ratio:

How Not to Look ‘Weird’

After Having Cosmetic Work

How do we do all this without making you look weird? One of

the tricks we use here to train our aesthetic eye is the Golden

Ratio. So, one might argue that beauty is cultural and in fact,

one of my very best friends is an anthropologist. I think he

was a bit sad when he found out that I went into cosmetics

instead of life saving. He would argue with me that beauty is

cultural and he traveled the world, every place he went, there

was something different that made people beautiful.

Certainly there are many things that will make someone

attractive. Of course there is, but they have done studies and

have found that most people find the same sort of dimensions

attractive. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Caucasian, Asian,

African-American, there are measurements in the face that

will make someone more attractive just to the first glance than

someone else. Leonardo da Vinci knew this and he crafted, I

think, all of his works around this ratio. The little smarties at

Apple know this and all their logos are done to this ratio too.

It’s found in nature and when a few of the celebrities are

matched up against the golden ratio mask, you find they all fit

the mask beautifully.

So what does this mean to the average person? What does it

mean? It means that if you fill a cheek outside of that ratio,

someone’s going to look weird. We can measure where your

cheek should end and we try and keep it within those

boundaries. This is what I said, some people want to enhance

their beauty while others just want to look the same. But we

can use it to improve your dimensions in your face.

Now, the key point is that once your face is fully grown, what

stays the same for the rest of your life is the distance between

your eyeballs, it’s your intercanthal distance. We can measure

that. This we learned from a very fabulous Canadian cosmetic

surgeon, so it’s not my idea. He spent a lot of time studying

his patients’ faces. What we would do, can I demonstrate on

someone? Or I’ll just do myself? Stab my eyes. Stephanie.

Yes, Stephanie. I will show you how we do this with Steph.

We measure the distance between her eyes. Stephanie is

very attractive now. I can tell you that most of these are going

to match up. Her forehead should be from there to there.

Which it is! If her forehead is too high, bigger than this ratio,

she needs to cut a fringe because I can’t fix that. Her

eyebrows should end where they are ending and they should

peak basically where she has got them there. They could be a

little bit more peaked there.

Her nose, I think is probably about the right size which it is.

You can tell if your nose is too short, we can extend it with

filler or you can have a nose job. You know that if your nose is

too small, it actually makes you less attractive. Everyone

thinks you want a really small nose and you don’t. I have

people who think and worry that their noses are too big for

their faces and they’re absolutely perfect on this. So, her

cheek distance is lovely. Now Steph is very young.

She measures up in the chin as well. A lot of people are short

on the chin and by building your chin with dermal filler, it really

enhances. There you go. She’s cheating already. She has

dropped it with the anti-wrinkle injection. So there are a few of

the points we measure up on the face. Because if the cheeks

are too flat, I know I can fill up to this particular point and it

should enhance your beauty rather than take it away from

you.

So these are some of the things we do to try and keep you

looking natural at The Victorian Cosmetic Institute.
