Cadet Spotlight | This past
summer, the Tawani Foundation
sponsored 12 cadets from 11 different
academies and JROTC programs to
partake in this year’s educational trip -
“Storm the Beaches.” All cadets are
encouraged to apply regardless of their
financial situation. Thanks to the
generous support of the foundation,
cadets chosen to attend benefitted (free
of charge) from airfare, travel in coach
buses, accommodations in fine hotels,
train travel, and dinners at local restau-
rants which boasted the best
regional dining.
Over a span of 8 days, cadets toured
London, Normandy, and Paris and
visited sites such as the Marble Arch,
Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar
Square, Whitehall, House of
Parliament, Tower of London,
Westminster Abbey, Cabinet War
Room, Churchill Museum, Arundel
Castle, Caen Memorial Museum for
Peace, the Louvre and World War II
sites such as the scene of the Allied
Forces’ landing on D-Day, Omaha
Beach, Pointe de Hoc, and the
American Cemetery.
This year’s cohort was led by LTC
David Schoenfeld (CMA-B) and Maj.
Steven Green from the JROTC
Department.

Welcome | The Service Leadership Programs
would like to welcome the Class of 2019! We
wish the best to the 803 freshmen across our
academies and the 143 7th graders at Marine
Leadership Academy who are all beginning their
journey of becoming the leaders of tomorrow!
The Network Office would like to welcome Ms.
Erin Galfer, the new Principal at Marine
Leadership Academy. Under her guidance and
leadership, we look forward to seeing MLA
continue to grow and increase its presence as an
anchor in the community. At Air Force Academy
we welcome Chief Raymond Smith as the
Interim Commandant. Dr. Valencia Barnes, Ms.
Vickie Durrah, and Mr. Jeff Myzczek have
returned to the Network as Assistant Principals.
We wish you all continued success. We also
welcome our new Resident Principals, Mr. Israel
Perez (Rickover Naval Academy) and Ms. Jada
Mims (Air Force Academy). We welcome all the
new leadership into our family and know that we
are excited to see the daily impact you make on
the lives of our cadets.
The JROTC Department welcomes their new
instructors: SFC Narvaez (Phoenix Military
Academy), MSGT Allen (Phillips HS),
MGYSGT Slaughter (Marine Leadership Acade-
my), and MSGT Barlow (Taft HS). Our desire is
to ensure you feel supported and equipped with
tools necessary to mold our cadets into leaders.

Leadership Opportunity | Registration for We Day 2016 is now open! What is
We Day? An annual series of stadium-sized events, We Day brings together
world-renowned speakers and performers—from Malala Yousafzai and Martin Sheen to
Demi Lovato—with tens of thousands of youth to kick-start a year of action through We
Act. You can’t buy a ticket to We Day—you earn it by taking on one local and one
global action.
More than a one-day event, We Day is connected to the year-long We Act program, which offers educational resources and campaigns
to help young people turn the day’s inspiration into sustained action. We Day and We Act are cause inclusive, empowering young
people to find their passion and create the change they want to see. By taking action on one local and one global cause, students are
equipped with the tools to succeed academically, in the workplace and as active citizens. Together, We Day and We Act are a blueprint
for helping the next generation of global citizens.
Last year’s participating schools included Rickover Naval Academy and Marine Leadership Academy. Please visit www.we.org for
more information and for details on how to register your cadets for this great global service opportunity.
Save the Date | This fall’s Principal for a Day event will
take place on Tuesday, October 27. The Principal for a Day
initiative is an opportunity for the Network and the
academies to showcase the cadets, staff, and leadership
initiatives in and out of the schools to community
stakeholders. This past spring, we had 16 leaders across
diverse industries participate in the event. All were
impressed by the leadership and confidence of our cadets.
Our goal is to expose our academies to leaders in the
community who can serve as advocates and champions for
our schools. We need to ensure people know about the
great leadership development happening in our academies
and how that benefits our communities.
Congratulations | The Golden Bugle would like to congratulate
Ms. Carol Moran, teacher at Chicago Military Academy at Bronzeville
for winning the “Guest Contributor of the Year” award! Ms. Moran
consistently submitted materials to the Golden Bugle and kept our
Service Leadership Programs Community abreast of the great things
her cadets were doing in and out of the classroom. We appreciate the
dedication she demonstrates towards highlighting cadets at her
academy. We look forward to another year of fruitful submissions.
If your cadets are doing great things in or out of the classroom, we
encourage you to submit a small write-up to highlight their
accomplishments. They can be personal or JROTC related; we know
our cadets are well-rounded. Let’s highlight them in all their
accomplishments. Submission Link: www.cps.edu/theGoldenBugle
