Internships—An Investment in the Future
Students who gain work experience during college are better informed and more attractive job candidates when they graduate. Many employers
use their intern pool to identify full-time candidates. The challenge for students is finding a great internship that allows them to showcase their talents.
Internships in corporate, small business, public service, research, education, not-for-profit, and other highly competitive sectors offer valuable experience, but often they provide little or no pay. Many students cannot afford to pursue these opportunities without financial support.
Washington University parents Jeffrey and Heller Goldberg have a daughter in the Arts & Sciences Class of 2019, and they have generously established a challenge fund to match gifts to the Career Center Internship Stipend Program. They hope this challenge will help more students take advantage of internship opportunities wherever they may find them. In 2016–17, more than 175 Washington University students, representing every undergraduate school, received $295,000 in stipends for internships in 40 cities with more than 165 organizations.
