Anne Gaines to present mosaic mural projects GAL demo: Tuesday, March 5th at 7 p.m.

GAL welcomes Anne Farley Gaines to speak about her artwork, including complex mixed-media folding screens, shaped wall pieces and murals, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 at the Glenview Park Center. This event is free and open to the public.

Gaines projects are often collaborative, involving members of the communities where the work will be installed. In her most ambitious project to-date Gaines designed and produced a mosaic and ceramic mural with over 500 students, artists, and other participants in Wichita Falls, Texas, capitalizing on the nature, landmarks, and symbolism of the region.

Currently, Gaines is completing a series of ten 6' by 2' murals with at-risk teens at the Jane Addams Family Resource Center. She embraces the concept of making a positive difference with youth through art-making processes.

GAL Monthly Demo Meetings are held at the Glenview Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Avenue, Glenview, Illinois on the first Tuesday of

February, March, May, September, October and November of 2019 from 7-9 p.m. Meetings are free and open to the public. This event is ADA accessible.

Note: February’s demo with Kristin Haas was canceled due to weather concerns. The GAL looks forward to rescheduling in the fall. Stay tuned for more details.

Susan Mart recommends A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline, an excellent book about Andrew Wyeth and the woman who was his model for the painting “Christina’s World.”

Margaret Newman says, “You can't do better than the Art Institute website or other museums in Chicago.”

Deb Anderson recommends the “Creative Peptalk Podcast,” Episode 215 (be warned - very peppy, super-positive).

Steve Johnson recommends the “The Master’s Secrets,” an excellent podcast, which communicates many different artists

views. Steve also recommends a book by Thomas Schaller, Architect of Light, and feels anything by Joseph Zbukvic or Charles Reid (both are watercolor artists) are excellent.

Kittie Yohe recommends The Watercolorist’s Essential Notebook: Landscapes and The Watercolorist’s Essential Notebook, both written by Gordon MacKenzie. Kittie discovered this book last year. “I am not a landscape painter, but this book has many great ideas and techniques that I am interested in.” Kittie feels that the basics can be applied to any a level and it is a great teaching book.

GAL asked: Is there a book, podcast or other creative or art related resource you'd like to recommend to the GAL community? Here are your responses:
