Weird is your superpower.

About ten years ago I tried to explain to my wife what made IMSA such an important, life-changing place for me. That explanation turned into a 329 page novel (my first published young adult novel), that I still think only scratched the surface of what makes IMSA such a wondrous, rare, and crucial place.

The short version of how IMSA changed my life is this: I grew up in a cornfield. The high school I went to before IMSA wasn’t bad. It was probably a lot like most high schools in this country—large, easy to get lost in, and dominated by a culture that revolved around sports.

There was a distinct hierarchy in the halls of that school. Among the boys, wrestlers were at the top (we were a town known for wrestling), then football players, then other “star athletes,” then everyone else. For ease of identification, most students were corralled into categories: jocks, cheerleaders, preps, punks, skater kids, drama geeks, regular geeks, and art freaks.

I was someone who, like many teens, didn’t fit neatly into a group. I yearned for a different way of being, but I couldn’t envision what that might be. It didn’t take me long to learn, though, that being different at that school was a liability.

The school I went to before IMSA wasn’t all that unusual in this respect. As an educator and author, I visit many schools, and in far too many I see creativity and “thinking outside the box” fall to the wayside. It’s not that teachers don’t value such things. It’s that all too often there aren’t resources to effectively foster creativity, innovation, and higher order thinking skills. Overburdened teachers need to teach to the “common” standards and meet countless curriculum goals, and skills that aren’t easily assessed are frequently ignored or discouraged.

Page 3: The Gift Of Weirdness - hannahgebhart.com Annual Report 2017 01 28 hng.pdfcheerleaders, preps, punks, skater kids, drama geeks, regular geeks, and art freaks. I was someone who, like

As a misfit teen, I didn’t like the choices laid out for me, but I couldn’t envision other options. So I began to rebel against both the system and myself. I’ve seen a lot of teens do this. When people can’t find creative, positive directions to channel their energy, they channel their energy in destructive, negative ways.

All this changed for me, though, when I got into IMSA. As early as the first week there, among the wing bonding activities and lock-ins, I discovered the new way of being that I’d craved. Here were others who defied common categories. Here was an intellectual community that encouraged questioning, creativity, and thinking differently. Here the misfits were the majority.

I learned a great deal in the classrooms of IMSA. I learned more through late nights talking with friends about Nietzsche, sharing books, discussing Marquez, and finding creative ways to channel our energy. Granted, we sometimes found creatively rebellious ways to express ourselves, but we never settled for being ordinary. The beauty of IMSA was that standing out and being weird were celebrated.

It’s that embrace of the weird that ultimately proved transformational for me, and that helps me to this day in my career as a writer. Instead of trying to conform, I seek out stories that only I can tell, and unique ways to tell them.

Any truly creative act, whether it’s founding a new company, developing new technologies, or writing a book that’s different from what’s already out there, requires breaking away from the ordinary and risking rejection. If I hadn’t gone to IMSA, I don’t know if I’d have learned how to do this.

IMSA isn’t just a top-rated intellectual community. It’s a place that, by embracing the weird, encourages students to seek out and actualize their own unique abilities, and for this I’m deeply grateful.

So here’s to lock-ins and late night discussions with wing mates. Here’s to Yare runs, shaving cream fights, Jello wrestling, Club Pseudo, The Acronym, and creative pranks. Here’s to the many teachers, RCs, administrators, and counselors who supported us. And most of all, here’s to a culture that embraced the weird and let it thrive. As a friend of mine once put it, “Weird is your superpower.”

THE GIFT OF WEIRDNESS

Here was an intellectual community that encouraged questioning, creativity, and

thinking differently. Here the misfits were the majority.

Q&A with Kathleen Clarke

Alumna Kathleen Clarke ‘93 was appointed to the IMSA Board of Trustees in September. We were able to catch up with her after her

first Trustees meeting to get her thoughts on returning to IMSA!

As a 14 year old, I didn’t realize the scope of what I was learning at IMSA. In my previous educational experiences, teachers “held our hands” through the process of knowledge acquisition and discovery. The idea was to get the right answer. At IMSA, the teachers pushed us to learn how to think- to learn how to be autodidactic or pool knowledge with our peers to solve problems. I was pushed to ask thoughtful questions, trust in my ability to wrangle with difficult and complex problems, and, as a result, develop the self-awareness to understand that innovation requires not only creativity but hard work. When I was at IMSA, many of our science classes were structured around “problem-based learning.” This method of hands-on learning, where students had to investigate and experiment to derive answers and formulas, was completely new and challenging to me.

While I loved biology, chemistry, and math, physics was a particular challenge, and our weekly physics problem sets filled me with dread. It was (and is) daunting to be faced with a physics problem, or any kind of problem, you have no idea how to conquer.

Some years later I found myself COO/CFO of a new school situated in a low-income Chicago neighborhood. I was charged with finding, financing, and renovating a school building so that the grade school could remain open and hopefully expand. It was a daunting task made all the more challenging by a tight budget, a very short timeline, political demands, compliance hurdles, few building options for relocation, and that many families were relying on me to ensure their school would continue to operate.

It is with the skills I acquired in dealing with those physics problems that I approached my school challenge - examine the components of the problem, test different ideas, persist through the set-backs, collaborate with peers, and learn how to build upon what you have learned to face your next challenge armed with that much more information and experience.

How did your experience as an IMSA student impact your career or life in general after graduation?

As an alumna, what is your advice to current students?

When I was an IMSA student, it was too easy to become consumed by the coursework. Between problems sets, language translations, experiment write-ups and our reading, it was difficult to find time to do anything else, but forming relationships was exactly what was needed to learn to balance the rigors of our workload. My advice to incoming and current students is to make connections with fellow students, the staff and your teachers; they will be your support and thoughtful guides not only at IMSA but in your adult lives. Participate in all the clubs, sports and events you can- it helps you establish what you know you like and discover new outlets. Take advantage of opportunities to engage in the world outside of the IMSA campus and see how the work you do at IMSA is so critical to engaging in and solving real-world problems. I learned more about myself as a person- who I wanted to become and what was important to me- from my connections with the people I lived, worked, and enjoyed life with every day.

What is your favorite memory from your time as a student at IMSA?

I have so many favorite memories from IMSA but I find that all of them revolve around my friends. Whether it was going to dances, participating in Yare runs, taking field trips to the mall or Oberweis (that was a field trip during my time at IMSA!), hanging out in the common areas in the evening, or just playing euchre with friends, these are the moments that most color my memories. The relationships I formed at IMSA were as important as the education I received at the school. Many of my classmates have become treasured life-long friends, each following their own unique trajectory, and as testaments to IMSA’s pioneering educational spirit, each making lasting contributions to better our society.

A MATTER of Importance IMSA Alums Observation care, the designation for at-risk patients who do not meet criteria for hospital admission, drives up care costs and creates legal and logistical nightmares for clinicians. Chicago’s leading medical technology incubator MATTER selected seven teams of college students to research the topic and propose a market-viable solution that could be implemented in the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System. One team is made up of IMSA alumni representing three generations of IMSA classes and three different universities:

Corey Hornbeck ‘13, Illinois Institute of Technology

Mitchell Sun ‘16, University of Illinois-Chicago

Vimal Bellamkonda ‘15, Northwestern University

Vinesh Kannan ‘15, Illinois Institute of Technology

Vivian Jin ‘15, University of Illinois-Chicago

“We’re grateful that other IMSA alumni support us and introduce us to professionals in all parts of the healthcare world. This is a chance for us to show what IMSA alumni are capable of contributing to the community.” - Vivian Jin

“It’s great to work on a complex problem like this with friends. Thanks to IMSA we know each other well and have no remorse on geeking out about obscure healthcare policies. We plan to learn a lot and, dare we say it, advance the human condition.” - Vimal Bellamkonda

A-Wing science labs are renovated and open! The science labs now provide IMSA students a state-of-the-art classroom experience and opportunities to explore and experiment in ways they previously could not.

With much excitement, IMSA opened IN2 – the Steve and Jamie Chen Center for Innovation and Inquiry this past September. The space has been buzzing with activity since then with the expansion of existing programs like Aviation Club, TALENT, Lego League, Robotics, Green Apple Day of Service, and the MakerSquad which has expanded significantly with the new Makerspace in IN2. TALENT’s Power Pitch will be hosted in the new space in 2017! Keeping with its entrepreneurial spirit, the small but mighty team is getting “IN2” a log of new, innovative programs and events that expand the learning experience for IMSA students and connect with

the surrounding community. One of these new programs, Think Café, a networking and input event for local entrepreneurs, community members and non-profit organizations, is hosted weekly and provides an open forum for solutions and idea exchange. Programs that are being launched in 2017 include: Linkubator, a co-working cohort, FUNShops for TALENT and Makerspace for 7th and 8th graders, Girls IN2 STEM, a mentor matching program, Tellabs Teen Innovator contest, and the Hackathon for Health. For students interested in entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship ventures and prototyping, IN2 provides unique and unlimited learning opportunities.

We are thankful to our corporate and alumni partners who helped bring these spaces and new learning experiences to our students.

It’s the little things. Sometimes small special moments preserve the essence of the past far better than a grand occasion. In fact, this past year for the Fund presented a rich tapestry of events that are interwoven with the stories about the Alumni, staff, volunteer leaders, financial supporters. The narratives add measurable meaning to the IMSA story.

In June of this past year, we received a call from a Class of ’97 IMSA Alum that her parents had made a provision in their estate for IMSA and she would like to discuss how this $75,000 gift of support might help. After some discussion of opportunities and greatest need, a decision was made that the gift would be used as naming opportunities in the newly constructed IN2 space and science labs. We set a time to meet later in the summer to have lunch and explore the spaces that were in the final stages of construction.

It was my initial meeting with Ande Croll Ngola, and I was excited to meet her and say thank you on behalf of the entire IMSA Family and to hear the story of her parents’ gift to IMSA.

Ande shared that she grew up in a rural Illinois community and that her Mom who was a teacher had hoped and planned that Ande might someday attend IMSA after having a chance to visit IMSA soon after it opened.

When Ande visited and applied, she felt this was the right place for her to achieve her educational goals and dreams.

Her parents, Richard and Susan Croll, were extremely proud of all that Ande has been able to accomplish because of experiences at IMSA and made a provision in their Trust Declaration to support IMSA as a way of recognizing the people, educational opportunities, and the future of the institution.

And so it goes. Parents with a vision for the education of their daughter creating new opportunities for future students interested in pursuing an education focused on science, technology, engineering, and math. This vision and commitment to the IMSA community are all part of the fabric that makes this very special community so vibrant. The threads that weave it together are our friends, and parents, and staff, and Alums who give so generously of their time, talent, and treasure year after year. Without every thread, we would surely unravel.

Thank you Ande for allowing us to share this significant story of your parents’ extraordinary generosity!

Bass Fishing and the IMSA FundStarted as a co-curricular during the 2008-2009 academic year by former principal Branson Lawrence, the IMSA Bass Fishing Team embraced some humble beginnings in the first few years, competing with uniforms and fishing equipment purchased at local garage sales. Ralph Flickinger, current head coach, joined the team in 2011, initially as the assistant coach. As a co-curricular, the Bass Fishing Club is co-ed and during 2015-2016 was comprised of mostly girls.

The Bass Fishing Team became a club during the 2014-2015 academic year for budgetary reasons. This change proved both challenging and beneficial for the club – with funding to support the club greatly reduced but also allowed for new ideas for the club goals. Initially, as a co-curricular activity, the team operated from the first of March until the first of May each year. With the transition to club status, it could be active for the entire school year. This change alone ignited new ideas to promote fishing to IMSA students. It also became evident that the club would need outside funding and donations for new fishing equipment and other resources. Coach Flickinger cultivated family relationships, receiving donations of a dozen new fishing rod and reel

combinations over a two year period, from a cousin and aunt. With new equipment and new excitement, the club members set goals for the 2014-2015 fishing tournament session: catch fish, catch Bass, catch legal Bass, place at tournament, qualify for State. The club succeeded on every goal except the last one. However, 2014-2015 was the first year the club placed at a tournament, placing 13th out of 22 boats.

The 2015-2016 session revised goals and raised the bar:

Fish more often Catch more Bass Catch more legal Bass Place higher at a tournament and qualify for State

While State tournament qualifying remained elusive, the club succeeded on all other goals including a 6th place finish out of 22 boats at two separate tournaments.

The renewed energy and accomplishments of IMSA’s Bass Fishing Club piqued people’s interest and generated many conversations. One person in particular, Richard Damon, uncle to Coach Flickinger, was exceptionally proud of the team

and spoke of them to anyone who would listen – family, friends, and even his doctors. One doctor, who happened to be a member of another fishing organization, Salmon Unlimited, Inc, took notice and reached out to Coach Flickinger for more information about the team. Salmon Unlimited, Inc holds multiple events each year including a charity golf tournament, with proceeds donated to local charities and clubs. After multiple conversations, Salmon Unlimited, Inc chose the IMSA Bass Fishing Club as a recipient of the proceeds from their 2016 golf tournament. In late June, Coach Flickinger was notified by Salmon Unlimited, Inc that the IMSA Bass Fishing Club would be receiving a $2,000 donation. Not long after getting the information on the donation and sharing it with family, other news was received. Richard Damon had passed away. Mr. Damon’s widow, Debbie Damon, decided the IMSA Bass Fishing Club would be one of Mr. Damon’s memorials. The club received an additional $770.00 from the Richard Damon Memorial. The funds were used to replace the summer style uniform shirts with shirts and outerwear better suited to the winter and spring weather common to the tournament season.

The Bass Fishing Club is appreciative of the shared excitement from Coach Flickinger, his family, and outside partners that generated the additional funding for this season.

Professional Field ServicesRenowned for the residential academy, IMSA also boasts award winning outreach programs.

This fall, the Statewide Student Initiatives team has partnered with the Admissions Office to host visits from schools with population groups that are underrepresented in STEM. Through this AbbVie-funded program, nearly 500 middle-school-aged students have toured IMSA and learned the basics of anatomy and a specimen dissection this year!

Fusion, a Statewide Educator Initiative that provides innovative STEM curricula and training to educators across the state, received Top 100 Finalist designation for the Chicago Innovation Awards this year for its unique approach partnering with organizations like Boeing to harness their extensive knowledge of aeronautics to develop several aviation related curricula.

We would like to express our gratitude to these partners and supporters of our outreach programs. Your support enables us to provide IMSA educational opportunities to nearly 10,000 student participants across the state.

2018 International Student Science FairIMSA has been awarded host duties of the 2018 International Student Science Fair (ISSF). This is the first time, since its launch in 2005, that the ISSF will be held in the United States. The ISSF provides students the opportunities to present scientific research to an international audience, share solutions to complex societal issues through thought leadership and build cross cultural connections.

The ISSF 2018, to be held June 27–July 1, will feature workshops and international competitions at IMSA’s Aurora campus and will provide opportunities to highlight Illinois’ academic, business and cultural offerings through tours, immersive programming and other events around the Chicagoland area. Dignitaries, educators and top students from approximately 35 schools from at least 18 countries are expected to attend.

2,628,000 MinutesThere are 525,600 minutes in a year. The five years I have served on the IMSA Fund Board equals an astounding 2,628,000 minutes. As my tenure as President of the IMSA Fund Board winds down, I am aware how rapidly the time has passed. Reflecting on this time, I appreciate how much can be accomplished by volunteers who are committed, focused, and passionate about the work of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy.

As I began my leadership role, the blueprints for Innovation Hub (IN2) and the Science Labs had just been finalized and we were discussing the Breaking New Ground Campaign that would transform this facility. Indeed, what a difference 525,600 minutes can make! IN2 and the A-Wing Science Lab spaces are spectacular learning laboratories for students, faculty, and members of the community.

When you visit IN2, expect to be greeted by an Idea Barista who will listen to your product or service development ideas and offer mentoring or navigational resource recommendations to further development. Share coffee at the IN2 Café with students and other entrepreneurs and discuss your ideas or solicit feedback while using the pancake bot to create designer pancakes. Spend some time in the Maker Space to learn more about rapid prototyping and the tools you that will bring your idea to physical form. In the Virtual Reality space you can use the special electronic equipment to interact in a seemingly real or physical way to develop your product or idea. I encourage you to schedule a tour!

Ross Hemphill, Ph.D.IMSA Fund Board President

New Board Members have brought energy and excitement to our endeavors this past year. They were recruited and welcomed by long-time board members with the hope these innovative leaders will build upon the founders’ successes over the past thirty years.

A number of very special relationships have also evolved in our last two million, six hundred thousand, twenty-eight minutes. The individuals who helped to design and jump start the Breaking New Ground Campaign have demonstrated the true meaning of philanthropy through both their volunteerism and financial support. We are indebted to them for their servant leadership on this project. In addition, our partner relationships with private family foundations and several notable corporations such as AbbVie, Boeing, BP America, ComEd, the Paul Galvin Memorial Foundation Trust and the Tellabs Foundation have sustained our efforts to offer STEM education throughout the State of Illinois to thousands of talented students in underserved and rural areas.

It has been an honor and a privilege to be associated with IMSA and the IMSA Fund. I ask that you consider volunteering your precious minutes and sharing your resources generously with IMSA for many years to come. I can assure you that your gifts of time and money will provide you with more than enough reward and personal satisfaction. We shall always need new volunteer leaders and financial support to fulfill our mission to ignite and nurture creative and ethical scientific minds that advance the human condition.

Now all that is left to say is Thank You to my fellow Board Members and the faculty and staff at IMSA for allowing me to serve with them.

“Servant leaders believe that everyone holds a piece of the light, and they act as a mirror to reflect the light by serving others or by putting the needs of others before their own, and allowing many candles to shine at once.”

Sabrina Kapp wrote the words above in 1998 when she participated in A Project for the National Association of Community Leadership.

During the past thirty years, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and the IMSA Fund for Advancement of Education have received and enjoyed the benefits of volunteer leadership. Community leaders have shared their passion serving the IMSA Fund Board and the Academy through their employer organizations, planning special events, working with students and faculty on STEM projects, fundraising to add new science labs and an Innovation Hub so emerging student entrepreneurs and members of the community could engage in collaborative discovery. In addition, IMSA volunteer leaders have shared insights to help support the growth of a “Learning Laboratory” that has furthered the academic and professional lives of nearly 6,000 Alumni whose work is integral to the world. In fact, and in deed, they are points of light.

The commitment to volunteerism and leadership is especially strong on both Boards. Thirty years ago, Dr. Leon Letterman, Dr. Stephanie Pace Marshall, and former Governor James Thompson envisioned creating an educational community of scholars who were dedicated to intellectual exploration and discovery. As the Academy evolved, this pioneering educational community of leaders and scholars continued to transform mathematics and science teaching through research, innovation and service. Today the Academy’s renowned reputation as a “teaching and learning laboratory” has been earned because of its focus on inquiry, collaborative relationship building, global networking, and personalized experiential learning.

As we plan for the coming New Year our volunteer leaders from both Boards, our President, Dr. Jose Torres and his leadership team will move us headfirst in to the next level of our growth as we prepare to welcome more than 250 international STEM students, teachers, and principals in June 2018 to host the 14th International Student Science Fair for the first time in the United States. Their work here will set the stage for extraordinary future achievements and shining their light to significantly influence life on our planet.

IMSA FUND DONORS

Donors Make a DifferenceAttending IMSA is a gift from the people of Illinois, and an education at IMSA offers far more than conventional honors courses. Our talented faculty members offer IMSA students the opportunity to study with acclaimed scientists, scholars and entrepreneurs. Students explore questions of their own, champion their ideas for product development and make significant leadership contributions. The support the IMSA Fund receives from donors helps us continue this important work. By donating to the IMSA Fund, your gift helps guarantee IMSA’s future for the next generation of STEM talent.

We encourage you to become personally invested by financially supporting the IMSA Fund and we thank you for considering a gift. Simply put, we could not do it without you!

Donate Online Your secure online donation can be made at www.imsa.edu/giving.

Donate by Mail or Phone Mail your donation to IMSA Fund, 1500 Sullivan Road, Aurora, IL 60506 or call us at (630) 907-5040.

Become a Monthly Donor By giving a regular amount each month, your gift adds up to make an even bigger difference.

Make a Pledge A pledge can be paid over time in cash or stocks. Monthly, quarterly and other payment schedules are available.

Memorial and Honor Giving Celebrate the life of a friend or loved one by making a donation to the IMSA Fund in their honor or memory.

Employer Matching Gifts Many companies offer matching gift programs to encourage employees to contribute to charitable organizations. Some provide matching funds to support employee volunteer hours. Most of these programs match contributions dollar for dollar, and some will even double or triple the amount of your gift. To find out if your company has a matching gift program, inquire with your human resources department or search for your company at www.imsa.edu/giving/matching-gifts.

Planned Giving Planned giving is a great way for you to leave a legacy gift to IMSA. We can help you make gifts through a bequest, a trust agreement, life insurance and more. Learn how a donation may fit into your financial, tax or estate goals.

We’d like to make it easy for you to donate in whatever way is most convenient for you.

To make your gift or for additional questions or concerns, please contact the Development Office at (630) 907-5040 or [email protected].
