Internet, I can chat with someone in another country. We live in a day and age that has surpassed the wildest dreams of past civilizations. We have all read or heard about ancient Rome or China. Has there ever been a Roman or Chinese emperor or empress that has had more luxuries in life.

And yet, I still worry about my life. I don't wake up and think, "Isn't it great to be living in the United States of America in the year 2009." I wonder if I have slept too long. Did the coffee maker start so I will have my cup of coffee? Are the kids on time for school? Did they get their homework done etc. etc. What is it that I have to do today?

And yet, are there still people in the world, that get up and worry about what they will eat or more importantly what their children can or will eat? Are there people that have no one to talk to or listen to? Are there children that don't have parents to worry about their homework or well being in general?

We that are born as human beings are the luckiest of all sentient creatures. For we can ponder these many questions; and more importantly we can then decide to do something about it. What is it that you will do today?

President’s Message

Dear Members and Friends:

As mentioned during January’s Officer installation, the Temple has been revitalized to a level greater than it’s been in many years. This change can be attributed to the leadership of Reverend Jerry Hirano and guidance of past Temple presidents James Aoki and Mike Koga, but primarily because of the support from the extremely dedicated Temple members. Higher attendance at weekly services, including guests; greater support at Board meetings; addition of new members; and generous donations of money and personal time are only a few

examples of this rejuvenation. I think the Sangha sometimes forgets just how fortunate the Temple is to have members with this level of commitment and support. I feel privileged to be associated with these people and

will do my best to continue the successful direction that the Temple is on.

Please don’t hesitate contacting me or any of the Officers or Board Members if you have an opinion or recommendation on Temple operations. You can send an electronic message to the Temple account

([email protected]) and Geoff Russell, who has volunteered to monitor all correspondences, will pass it along to the appropriate people. If you’d rather have your opinion be anonymous, contact me

directly by phone or email:

Steven Kato Telephone: Omitted for online version Email: Omitted for online version

James Aoki and I will be attending the BCA National Council meeting in Orange County at the end of

February. I’ll provide an overview of significant matters in the next GEPPO issue.

Food Bank Donations

The YBA and the Ogden Buddhist Temple, as a part of the Interfaith Group

has decided to help out the Food Bank this year. We need members to please bring non-perishable foods that are commercially packaged. Some suggestions include tuna fish, cans of vegetables, boxed dinners, and peanut butter. It is also recommended not to bring any glass items. There will be a box in the back of the

Hondo where you can drop off any foods you might want to donate.

This is a great project that will last all year long. Our YBA and our temple

are very excited to be a part of this. Thanks for your support! If you have any questions, please contact Daley Y.

Buddhism 101

We are offering an introductory course in Buddhism for people interested in gaining a working knowledge of the history and teaching of the Buddha. The course will be held at the Ogden Buddhist Church, 155 North Street (400 North) in Ogden. Weekly meetings will be held on Wednesdays, from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. beginning March the 11th and continue for 10 weeks. Mike Monson will be conducting the course using a variety of resources. The cost for the course will be $25.00 to cover the cost of books and other materials. Interested parties should contact the church via email at [email protected] or by telephone to Mike at 801-510-1911.

Membership Dues

Annual Membership dues for the Ogden Buddhist Church are as follows:

Adults age 21 – 79 dues are $100 per member Adults age 80 and over no membership dues Kids age 0 – 20 dues are $10 per child

Approximately 90% of members’ dues are paid as an assessment to the BCA. This leaves very little for our own Temple’s needs. Therefore the Board is asking our members for a voluntary contribution of $50 per member as “Church” membership dues. This extra amount will help to ensure our own Temple’s needs are met.

Northern Utah Women’s Conference

The 34th Annual Northern Utah Women's Conference will be held Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Ogden City Marriott. Workshops include fun to serious topics: belly

dancing, holistic healing, etc. The keynote speaker is Val Baldwin. Val is a motivational speaker and has been a guest on the ABC TV show, Good Things Utah. Come and join us. Many come with their daughters, sisters,

and friends as an annual fun thing to do together. Start your fun tradition! Call Alice Hirai for more info: 801-395-1529 (home) or 801-589-8859 (cell).

OHIGAN SERVICE March Shotsuki Hoyo

KEIRO-KAI

Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 1:00 PM

Lunch at 12:00 noon

The word Higan comes from the Sanskrit word Paramita - "Other Shore." The words "other shore" refer to the

"world of )irvana." As the name Higan denotes, this is the time to remind within each and every one of us the

Bodhisattva practice of the Six Paramitas of charity, morality, patience, effort, meditation, and wisdom. It is the

means by which one crosses over the illusory ocean of birth and death to the other shore of )irvana.

Shotsuki Hoyo - Monthly Memorial Service

HANAMATSURI SERVICE (Service will begin with traditional Ochigo Parade)

April Shotsuki Hoyo

Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 10:00 AM

Hanamatsuri or "Flower Festival" is held to commemorate the birth of Siddartha Gautama in Lumbini Garden.

According to the ancient legend, the universe was filled with joyful music, flowers bloomed in full glory and

sweet rain fell from the heavens to make this a joyful event. During the service a flower shine known as the

Hanamido is set up in front of the main altar as a symbol of Lumbini Garden. In this shrine is placed a

statuette of the infant Buddha and the Congregation offers flowers and pours sweet tea over the image.
