But he did. Lucas, who heads the Community Relations/Volunteers, had been searching for a group to support the development of an ambitious landscaping plan at the ODNR Park site on the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Suzy saw this as a fantastic outreach opportunity. Areas surrounding the kayak pond and the log house are receiving attention. After a June 3 meeting which brought Suzy, Geri Rea and Jim Chakeres together with key ODNR folks we were ‘on board.’ Roundup treatments were recommended to get the ground under control and ODNR’s Tom Drought shared more on the project at Convention. On June 16, OAGC and ODNR met at the fairgrounds to keep plans moving ahead for the June 23 planting date. ODNR personnel included Lucas, Drought, Heidi Hetzel Evans, Community Relations Section manager, and Jeff Johnson, Natural Areas and Preserves administrator. OAGC members included: Jim Chakeres, Diane Daniels, Jean Jankowski, Mary Lee Minor and Suzy Parker. Already, Gale Martin of Plants in Harmony has pledged $300 worth of native plants that were started from seed harvested from Ohio prairies. Hopefully, OAGC members can provide additional plants once a wish list is created. OAGC will receive signage promoting our organization and a table in the pavilion for the 12 day run of the fair. OAGC is seeking members to work at the fair (admission and parking passes supplied) and promote this new ODNR partnership. Contact Suzy Parker at [email protected]. A note from our president:

To all you great OAGC people! Thanks!I have met so many new people: garden lovers who enjoy digging

in the dirt as I do, floral designers with a flair for innovation, growerswith ten green fingers, speakers with impelling voices and excitingmessages, event planners eager to please, hard working members with adesire to spread gardening and OAGC, all with lots of fun along the way.

We have shared so much: busy board meetings, Exhibitors’ andJudges’ School classes, wonderful trips, camping out, challengingchanges, great regional meetings and two cool conventions. Thanks to allof you.

I have badgered you about eating right and trying new things. Ihave hauled fresh cider all over the state and you still acted like you werehappy I brought it. And...you bought it!

My term as your president has become a joy. I started my journeywith the hardest thing I have had to bear...returning home fromconvention to find my husband dead. Your kindness, hugs andencouragement helped me through the worst time of my life. Thanks.

I know there are great times ahead. Another trip to Ireland is inthe works, new ideas for outreach and teaching new gardeners, using technology to share our knowledge on social venueslike YouTube, expanding our influence as seasoned gardeners since 1930, inviting other garden groups to share ourevents, and working with new gardeners with a desire to eat clean, raise fruits and veggies and get healthy.

We can impact the next generation when we invite intoour realm of gardening all those young people concerned withcommunity gardens, fresh produce, fewer food additives andmore choices. Through strategic planning, we are meeting theneed for other approaches to spread gardening. Our RootCamps effort is a great move to include those outside thesocial ideal of ‘garden club.’

My usual message urged you to join forces with otherOAGC members to attend Exhibitors’ and Judges’ School, regional meetings, convention, Nature Study Retreat and otherevents. I now look forward to sharing Second Vice-PresidentSuzy Parker’s planned Gardeners’ Day Out, July 9, cruisingdown the river, time-traveling in ‘Almost Heaven, WestVirginia,’ on to scenic Parkersburg to visit BlennerhassettIsland for brunch with the lady of the mansion, ‘MargaretBlennerhassett.’ See you there!

To borrow someone else’s slogan, thanks for thememories,

I was happy to see nearlytwo pages devoted tobackgrounds for creativedesigns in our new OAGCHandbook for Exhibitors andJudges. A background is veryimportant to a design. Itshould be an active part ofany creative design. Not onlydo they add beauty, they adddistinction to a flower show.Nothing can do more toenhance a creative design as awell-chosen background. When in doubt as to whatcolor to use, go to the color section in the handbook.

You must draw the attention of the viewer into andthrough the design. There are many colors, fabrics, patternsand textures to choose from. Backgrounds can be made offoam board, plywood, fiberboard, insulation board or anyother substantial material. Use the elements of design toselect the right material for your background. Thebackground width and height will dictate the size of yourcontainer and the amount of materials needed.

For more information on backgrounds go to pages 118and 119 in the new OAGC Handbook for Exhibitors andJudges.

Thanks to all who participated in the conventionhorticulture show. The excellent entries certainly showedthe time and effort you put into your gardens. Thank youalso to the judges and clerks who volunteered their time.

Though your annuals may be growing strong – don’tforget many of them are heavy feeders that need regularfertilizing and many will also benefit from deadheading. When you deadhead/remove spent blooms, plants free upseed making energy to make new growth. This is true forboth annuals and perennials. Peonies, lilacs, hostas anddaylilies are a few of the perennials that really benefitfrom deadheading. Clipping off the spent flowers of mostany plant will improve its appearance and help its growth.

This is also “pollinator time.” They are out in fullforce doing their important work in our gardens (nopollinators, no tomatoes, apples, or other crops). Whenyou see an insect, take time to identify it before reachingfor the spray. Please remember that 90%+ of the bugs inour gardens are beneficial. Singular bugs are almostalways beneficial. Crowds are often pests. As the sayinggoes “know your enemy.”

Junior Gardeners DepartmentDeborah Graham, Chair

One of OAGC’s most importantlegacies is inspiring future gardeners.Teaching our youth to care for andnurture living things is at the top ofour list. To date OAGC has 18 juniorgarden clubs and 7 juniormembers-at-large for a total juniorgardener membership of 433. Ourjunior gardener membership is alive

and growing thanks to many caring adults that want toteach our children about gardening and nature.

We have many types of junior clubs. Some are

private clubs and others are affiliated with daycare, classrooms and libraries. We have also had clubs affiliatedwith 4-H and Scouts. OAGC offers a free Junior GardenerAdviser’s Handbook. In the handbook you will findinformation on how to start a junior garden club and ideasfor activities.

Some fun activities this summer for your juniorgardener might be looking for four leaf clovers; planting araised garden; touch, smell and taste leaves in an herbgarden; walk in the woods and learn to identify trees; planta fairy garden; go on a bird walk; grow a butterfly gardenor learn about beneficial insects. But one of a child’sfavorite activities can be as simple as hunting for worms.Turning over stones, old bark on the ground and fallenleaves in search of a worm will delight most. That wormhunt can be a fun introduction for a child to gardening andnature. Why not start a junior garden club? The rewardsare beneficial to all. Let’s pass on our love for gardeningand nature.

Membership DepartmentKim Long, Chair

Yay! We are adding new members monthly and are at3296 members strong within our OAGC organization! That’s an increase of 26 members over the last threemonths and another crowing moment! Invite the neighboryou see working in their yard to a garden club meeting. Itdoesn’t matter if they are 20, 40, 60 years of age, gardening has no age requirements or limits. Maybe, anew neighbor has moved into your area. Brainstorm!Instead of taking them cookies, how about a plant? Garden clubbing is a good way for new residents tobecome involved and to be a part of their new community.

Club membership changes can now be submittedonline at the OAGC website: www.oagc.org. Otherchanges that can be submitted include adding newmembers or, sadly, removing those who pass away.Changes in officers and mailing information changes alsocan be submitted. Just go to the DEPARTMENT dropdown menu and float down to the membership department.A sub tab option is there to access the membershipchanges submission form. The form gets directlysubmitted to the State Membership Chair who will be incontact if needed. Sometimes, a change in officers meansthat information doesn’t get to the right individual. In ainstant, changes can be made! How convenient!

Club Treasurers: please have each member doublecheck their information on the OAGC rosters that are sentwith the 2016-2017 annual dues statements. Speakingfrom personal experience, a wrong cell phone numbermeans you just might miss out on an exciting clubadventure or something else important! Have a somethingto “Crow About” day!

Stepping StonesThe Williamsburg Garden Club (Region 4) is celebrating its 80th

anniversary in 2016. The club was organized in 1936 and joined OAGC twoyears later in 1938. The purpose of the WGC has always been to “Widen OurKnowledge of Nature.” This year, the club is continuing its emphasis onbiodiversity by learning about pollinators and what we all can do to aid in theirsurvival.

The Earth, Wind and Flowers Garden Club (Region 7) celebrated a30 anniversary with a dinner May 2. Publicity record books were displayed.th

Mary Lee Minor shared four types of designs, giving quick setup ideas whichwill be helpful for the club’s September flower show. Each member was givena fresh carnation.

It was March 19, 1941, that 28 ladies began attending the DaltonGarden Club (Region 14), Dalton, Ohio, founded by the late Mrs. Carrol(Margaret) Scott. Two charter members, Mrs. Dale Scott and Mrs. RichardMoser still live in the area. In the first year, the club held seven meetings withthe club hostess having the meeting in her home. All the programs werepresented by club members for several years. The club adopted a verse, “Thekiss of the sun for pardon, the song of the birds for mirth, I am nearer God’sheart in a garden than anywhere else on earth” by Dorothy Burney.

Initially, the affiliation was with National Council of State Garden Clubs,Garden Club of Ohio and the Canton Garden Center. By 1951, the membershipgrew to 44 members. Today, the Dalton Garden Club boasts 12 very loyalmembers and takes great pride in 75 years of existence and current membership in OAGC and Region 14.

OAGC Foundation NotesAt its spring board meeting, the OAGC Foundation Trustees voted to change the

Each of the following studentsreceived a $2000 scholarship at the OAGC Convention in June.

The recipient of the first Dottie Bates Memorial Upperclassman Scholarship is JosiahBales from Reg. 7. Josiah is studying nursery management and agriculture business at TheOhio State University Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI) in Wooster. His exposure to the field of hydroponics hassparked his interest in growing produce using this method. He is maintaining a GPA of 3.7.

Rebecca Giesler, Reg. 6, was chosen for the Dr. Gary Anderson ATIScholarship. Rebecca will be a second year student at ATI studyingEnvironmental Science. Her interest in soil and water conservation has landed hera summer internship collecting water samples for analysis. Her GPA is 3.3.

The Incoming Freshman Scholarship is awarded to Josiah Grimm, Reg. 16.Josiah will pursue a degree in Horticulture Science at ATI, with the goal offurthering his current landscaping business. Tech TimeThe launch of the redesigned OAGC website,

www.oagc.org, has been a rousing success with over17,000 site visits just since the beginning of the year.

A couple of new pages have been added that clubsmay find useful. Under the DEPARTMENTS drop downmenu, the Membership Department has a submission formto notify the state membership chair regarding clubmembership changes. It gets submitted directly to the StateMembership Chair who will be in touch regarding theissue.

Under the BROWSE drop down menu on TheGarden Path page, in addition to the list of archivedGarden Path PDFs, there now is a form to submit gardenclub news for the Via the Grapevine, Stepping Stones andIn Memoriam columns. The form is submitted directly toThe Garden Path’s editor. A big shout-out to MaryMcConnell of Firelands GC in Reg. 6 for being the firstperson to use The Garden Path’s news submission form.

Root Camp Adventures Shared On the closing morning of convention in June,OAGC members heard of the work that has beencompleted through Root Camp events, which have alsobeen called Outreach events by the StrategicImplementation Team (SIT). Committee chair Mary LeeMinor, went through key words in the OAGC MissionStatement; “......innovation and excellence, horticultureand floral arts, creativity and personal growth...” askingthe audience to repeat phrases.

She asked the committee to step forward and shareabout the 13 Outreach events that had taken place aroundthe state since the fall of 2015. Small posters showedhighlights of the events with photos, brochures or flyers. Each was covered in chronological order with the eventsshared by the key players for that day. Read more aboutOutreach events on the blog page of the OAGC website(www.oagc.org).

Throughout the spring regionals, sign-up sheetswere circulated with Root Camp posters that were createdby Naomi Ormes. OAGC members around the state wereencouraged to be thinking of even more events, gardencenters and projects to promote a love of horticulture andgrowing that they could take on in their own communities.

Following the SIT presentation, one member whoheard the summary later told Mary Lee: “This was the bestsegment of convention for me. I could feel each person’spassion in the way they shared. In fact, as I walked to mycar, I thought, ‘What am I doing for my club? What am Idoing for OAGC?’” It does not get much better. The teamgrows bigger and wider, spreading the love of gardeningand OAGC throughout the state.
