First of all, as the majority of people already know, the 138th Kentucky Derby was Saturday at Churchill Downs, with a record breaking attendance of 165,307. Not knowing any- thing about the horses before the Derby, I sat down on my couch right before and watched the 20 horses walk by the cam- era and listened to what they said about each one and looked at their odds. So in my mind, I thought that Bodemeister just might win the garland of roses that night. Not only did I like the odds, I liked the story of how the horse was named after Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert’s son and how Baffert didn’t even know if he would be able to be at the Kentucky Derby just weeks ago as he suf- fered a heart attack. As I watched the horses come out of the gate, I was impressed at how Bodemeister took the lead and kept it for so long. However, I was even more impressed at how I’ll Have Another, with 15-1 odds, and 25-year-old jockey Mario Gutierrez came from so far back to take the lead from Bodemeister and win the 138th Kentucky Derby. That is the first time a horse in the No. 19 post position has won the Run for the Roses, and Gutierrez also became the 42nd jockey to win the Kentucky Derby in his first try. The second thing that is on my mind this week is Bre Elder being selected to be a member of the 2012 Kentucky Girls’ Basketball All-Star team. I just want to say congratulations to her on this accomplishment and good luck to her next year as she plays at the University of Dayton. Finally, I want to say good luck to all of the spring sports competing in these events. The tennis regional tournament finals should be played tonight, if weather permits, and I hope to see some Lady Knights and Knights making it to the state tournament. The regional track meet will be held this week, and I am also hoping I will be traveling to the University of Louisville next week to wit- ness the state track meet. With baseball and softball, I wish them good luck in the district tournament, with wishes that each of these teams will make a regional appearance this year. Once again, congratulations to Marion County’s Bre Elder as she plays for the Kentucky All-Stars and good luck to all of the spring sports as they wrap up their regular seasons and head into postseason. Lady Knights capture 3 wins By Josh & Jessica Veatch [email protected] The Marion County Lady Knights softball team picked up three wins last week. The team’s overall record is now 15-4. After capturing the first regu- lar season district title in school history, the team is playing well heading into the final stretch of the season. The 20th dis- trict softball tournament will be played at Taylor County High School, while the 5th region tourna- ment is scheduled to be played at Marion County.
